Sometimes Cupid shows up exactly when—and how—you least expect him in this deliciously witty romance from #1 Amazon and USA Today bestselling author Trilina Pucci.
Years ago, during a college production of Romeo and Juliet, Rory and Oliver shared one unforgettable stage kiss before fate pulled them apart. Now, while drowning her Valentine’s Day sorrows at brunch, she spots her former Romeo, wearing nothing but gold shorts and wings, playing Cupid for the lovelorn masses. Their chemistry still sizzles, but even with the stars finally aligning, these former leads will need more than Shakespeare’s guidance to turn their second chance into a true romance.
Trilina Pucci’s A Play for Love is part of The Improbable Second Chances, stories for star-crossed lovers and hopeless romantics. They can be read or listened to in one sitting. Let’s do it again.
Trilina Pucci, a #1 Amazon and USA TODAY Bestselling Author, is a connoisseur of pop culture and SANPELLEGRINO, but her true passion lies in crafting tantalizing romantic novels that delve into the depths of desire, emotion, and even hearty belly laughs.
When she's not penning steamy love stories, you'll find her indulging in Netflix marathons with her husband, Anthony (Residence is a fan fave), and their three not-so-little ones.
I didn't like the first half, but the second half with them having an all-day date and everything that came after was really good!
Rory and Oliver got stuck doing a Romeo and Juliet scene in college, sparks flew, but they didn't see each other after that.. Fast forward five years, they meet again in a restaurant, while he's dressed as a Cupid.. It's her last day in New York though, so they decide to spend it together. Will it end the same way it did the last time?
It was sweet and funny, but also a little cringe at times.. The first half was rough, there was too much second-hand embarrassment for me, personally, to handle.. But, their date all around New York, checking things off her list, was really fun. That was my favourite part of the novella and the end was really cute too!! Overall, I did like Rory and Oliver as a couple, I feel like they worked together well.
This author is new to me and I'll definitely check out her other books!

Okay, I did not expect to like this as much as I did. 🤭😍 Granted, the writing isn't my favorite, the jokes were kinda lame and repetitive, and the first half of the story was a bit cringey, but once I reached the second half, I flew through it! I especially liked the ending; it made me smile and laugh and feel all giddy inside (which is kinda rare for me 😆). It's not my favorite in the series, but I still really enjoyed it. 🩷
❗️Content Warnings❗️ Swearing: A little Spice: Fade-to-black and kissing. (🌶️🌶️/5)
I loved this one! Chemistry was good, the Romeo and Juliet trope worked, and it also provided the perfect ending. This was also the perfect lenght to give me everything I wanted for a Valentine's romance.
This book wasn't the worst of the bunch, it honestly felt like it was just fine. It had some really cute moments and there was some really cute and funny banter, there just wasn't a whole lot to it. I think the characters had an okay amount of chemistry but this just wasn't giving what I'd hoped it would. If you're a love of no spice, then this would be good for you! I enjoy the fact that I can sit here for 30 minutes and just binge these, but it's hard to actually give a decent rating and review since there isn't a whole lot. The writing was simple and the book itself goes pretty quick just don't get your hope and expectations up too high.

Back to these novellas after a dense fantasy read!! Even though these are so flawed, I can't help but (usually) have a fun time 🙂↕️
𓂃 ࣪˖ 𓈒࣪ ˖♡₊˚ 3.75☆ I didn’t really like the first part of this one — it was so awkward 😭💀 but after that, I ended up loving it and truly enjoying the story. It turned out to be such a sweet and lovely read 🥹✨
I absolutely loved Oliver and Rory together and honestly wished they had a full-length book just for them 🫠💌 I adored how they were already crushing on each other from the very beginning, so when they met again, it felt natural and easy to root for them 🫶🏻🩷
Thoughts This was a mixture of cringe, funny and cute. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded, will definitely be coming back to this author
Plot Summary Years after a college production of Romeo and Juliet ended with a single unforgettable kiss, Rory unexpectedly crosses paths with her former leading man while nursing her Valentine’s Day heartbreak. Now playing Cupid in a decidedly unconventional way, Oliver reminds her that their old chemistry never truly faded. With timing finally on their side, they’re faced with the challenge of turning a long-lost connection into something real—without relying on Shakespeare to write the ending.
Valentine's Day. Rory and Oliver met in college when they were playing the roles of Juliet and Romeo at Drama class. And they kissed as the play required. She had such a crush on him!
4 years and 364 days later, at a Galentine's Day party, where her best friend Benny was dancing as Cupid for rent money, she met Oliver again, also as a Cupid, and saved her from an annoying and insisting coworker she was trying to escape.
As she is leaving New York the next day, returning home to California, neither of them want to lose the second chance the universe is giving them, especially Oliver who had always had a crush on her too.
A bucket list is made, and they spend the day together, sightseeing, talking about their lives, having fun, and she wonders why he doesn't have a girlfriend. He's hotter than hot, a gorgeus man!
When they kiss, the same chemistry is crackling between them as it happened in college, and they have the most lovely one-night-stand together! When he wakes up the next day she's gone!
They're a country away from each other. Will a long distance relationship, texting and face timing, will be enough for them? Or will they have their own special Cupid watching over them?
I had a lot of fun reading this cute novella, and couldn't stop rooting for Rory and Oliver! Loved the ending!
Okayyyyy... The first chapter was super cringey, but the rest of the book??? I was totally surprised. I think I'll read more by this author to see if I really like her.
This one was okay. It started off really good but then it was just okay after that. One of the better ones of this little Amazon series, but nothing special.
I think I wanted a better, more exciting story of them meeting again. Oh well.
the setup… Rory Smith and Oliver Adams had what feels like a serendipitous encounter…in a drama class. She was randomly paired with him for a scene from Romeo and Juliet and shared a kiss she never forgot. Jump forward four years and they have another random encounter right before Valentine’s Day that is both unique and hilarious. Two special meet cutes…is it destiny?
the heart of the story… I thought after the first encounter something might have developed between these two but nothing happened. Their second connection was far more crazy and hilarious, but occurring the day before she was leaving New York for California. I loved how they decided to spend their time together, then and later.
the narration… It’s a duet narration by Jesse Vilinsky & Stephen Dexter, a style I love as it always adds an oomph to the story and it did here. Both of them have wonderful voice tones, excellent timing and great storytelling skills.
the bottom line… While Rory & Oliver’s two meet cutes were unique and funny, it’s what came next that made this an enjoyable romance. I just wish there’d been an explanation for why they never connected the first time. Otherwise, I had a good time with these two. 3.5 stars
📖This Is What I Call a Successful Novella Loved this. Truly. It was everything I’m looking for: sweet and adorable. Engaging. Fun and funny. Fast-paced. And — most importantly — it did not jump any phases. 👏
While the primary focus was the two MCs and their romance (which, so far, seems to be the only book in this series capable of actually doing that), we still get enough context, side-character fun, atmosphere, and setting to make it feel whole.
Nothing felt sacrificed. Nothing felt rushed. It knew exactly what it was doing.
💕Sweet > Spicy I’m used to Trilina’s spicy romances, so going in I wasn't sure what to expect. We get a fade-to-black paragraph featuring only a kiss and Trilina aces the sweetness and tension. The way I was at the edge of my seat during their first kiss??? That tension was doing work.
🎧Narration Praise Where It’s Due Jesse Vilinsky does an impeccable job of transporting us into Rory’s mind and feelings and making us feel them just as deeply. You’re not just listening; you’re inside her head. Stephen Dexter complements her so well and sounds exactly like I would have imagined every male character he portrayed here. The balance between them? Seamless.
In short... Short. Sweet. Effective. A novella that understands its assignment and executes it beautifully. ✨
-- Pre-read: 🤞🏻 that Trilina's humour works its magic today.
dnf at pg 50 (this was 75 pages and I couldn’t tolerate 25 more pages, that should tell y'all something).
After the previous novella in this collection, I didn't think it could go any lower but it did. I gave zero fucks about the story and the characters who had absolutely no chemistry whatsoever and the most absurd scenes ever. If I had to read one more description about how hot he is and how quirky, nerdy and shy she is and how they aren't compatible, I'd lose my mind.
2.5⭐️ I wish I could be more positive here but I straight up hated this. We start in some sort of Shakespeare English/possibly drama class that our main character Rory was "forced" to take by her friend. For some reason the midterm test is to read out a scene with a partner, in front of the whole class.
I don't know why this trope with Romeo and Juliet always includes the kiss scene? Like, there is a difference between reading the scene and acting it out. You don't kill your scene partner when you read Macbeth, so I don't know why the kiss is always involved when shows/books have this? Noone I know in real life had to do this. Anyways turns out that's a pet peeve of mine, I digress
Rory's entire inner monologue in Act I is just her going down the men in her class, and superficially saying why she thinks she's better than them. Terrible tattoo, bad breath, bad haircut etc. And look, we've all been shallow on the inside. But it definitely doesn't make your main character more likeable. Especially when the 'hot guy' (this is the only thing she knows about this man) walks into class and Rory turns into a bumbling mess, immediately eager to do the kiss scene.
The second half, with Rory and Oliver hanging out in New York was better, but not good enough to make up for how much I loathed Act I.

Review:
"A Play for Love" is a breezy, lighthearted romance novella that embraces its Valentine’s Day backdrop and whimsical theatrical theme, yet it falls short of offering a truly memorable love story.
The idea of former stage partners Rory and Oliver reuniting years after performing in a college rendition of Romeo & Juliet is undeniably charming, particularly with the Valentine’s twist of Oliver appearing as Cupid. Their spontaneous day around New York features some delightful and quirky moments. However, the novella's short length (approximately 88 pages) restricts the development of emotional depth and meaningful character growth, rendering their reunion more of a pleasant distraction than a fully realised second chance.
The tone fluctuates between humor, nostalgia, and sweetness. While there are instances of witty banter and amusing scenarios, certain moments, especially early in the story, can seem a bit awkward or forced until the plot gains momentum. Although the writing style and the adventure around the city provide light entertainment, the overall narrative lacks substantial weight; the transition from college theatre connections to adult attraction occasionally feels insufficiently developed to be truly engaging.
In summary, "A Play for Love" earns about 2.5 stars: it’s cute and quick to read, featuring charming elements and an entertaining premise, but its brevity and surface-level character development prevent it from becoming a romance that leaves a lasting impression.
I rounded up because… duet narration AND Romeo and Juliet (coincidentally, I’m currently reading this with my freshmen 🤣).
Rory’s (22-27) in class with her friend when the professor asks her friend to perform a scene, a kissing scene more specifically, with another actor. All of a sudden, handsome AF man walks in, and the rules are changed: now Rory is going to perform the Romeo and Juliet scene with him, Oliver (22-27).
They’re supposed to end the scene before they kiss, but Oliver says F it and does it anyway 👀🔥.
Almost 5 days later, they see each other again… in the most unexpected way 🤣.
But now, Rory is gonna be moving to California the following day 😬, so Oliver’s gonna show her around New York to all the places that she wanted to visit while living there…
And it’s gonna be memorable 👀
What I liked: — audiobook is duet narration 😮💨😮💨😮💨 — the times I laughed — the kisses 🔥 — the Romeo and Juliet scenes 👏🏻 (I’m still in in act one right now 👀, so I’m almost at the scenes that appear in this book 🤣) — the way they reunite 🤣👀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 — how protective Oliver gets — the mild OMD 😈. Oliver basically takes his girl back 🤷🏻♀️ — the way that it’s divided into acts 👏🏻 — the third act ❤️ (which almost feels like an epilogue🫶)
What I wanted more of: — both of them felt some type of way almost 5 years before, I wish they had wasted so much time 🤷🏻♀️ — while I understand that the City is huge, it’s a little hard to believe that they couldn’t connect sooner 😑 — there is an FTB scene 😑😒😒😒 we were robbed — more info on what happened in the five years they weren’t together — a true epilogue 😭 (but I do appreciate that we get a feeling that this is really an HEA ❤️)
yeah it was cute. too much talk about plays and junk, i just read one very similar. thought it was funny how he turned stripper, if only for a night. their day together was actually really cute and sweet. these authors, while bringing me in for the characters’ relationships, are given prompts that are too short to properly build a full plot.

Rory and Oliver kissed once in college, when reading lines from Romeo & Juliet. Years later, during a disastrous set up non-date, it is Oliver who rescues Rory from an infatuated work mate and they reconnect... for her last day in New York. Set on making the best of the one day, the pair embark on sightseeing and having a full NY experience before Rory leaves for California the next day. But will they see each other again? I enjoyed this short story, it was sweeter than expected and funny, so much too that had me grinning and almost laughing out loud as I listened.
