Nneka’s little brother Chidi is always saying that his favorite color is blue. When Nneka asks him why, he replies, “because the sky is blue and my best shirt is blue.” So Nneka decides to teach him about other colors seen in their village — red for the chiefs' caps, yellow for the gari they eat, brown for the okwe game board — and to tell him why she likes them. Ifeoma Onyefulu here introduces young readers to a rainbow palette, African style, with warm words and photographs offering a colorful glimpse of Nigerian village life.
The narrative structure of this book is similar in idea to A Triangle For Adaora, though this is more info-dump and less narrative. It's still reasonably engaging -- though a number of the colors I feel like you have to already understand in order to recognize how some of the photographs are ostensibly all depicting the same color, or how certain colors differ from other colors.
I really enjoyed this book that features a little girl sharing with her little brother all the colors she loves and some things that remind her of that color. It's got vivid photographs and offers a great cultural perspective of Nigeria.
