Avalanche : An MM Stepbrother Romance

Rate this book
A LOVE THAT COULD BURY US BOTH.

Four years of silence, two thousand miles, and a love their parents will never forgive.

STONE It wasn’t Hanlon’s fault our parents pampered him while pushing me to the brink. But I still resented it. I left to get out of Hanlon’s orbit, to live my life without having to worry about him. Four years later, we’ve barely spoken until he shows up on the doorstep of my ski patrol office, ready to start his internship. Neither of us is thrilled. It doesn’t take long before my protective instincts kick back in, but so do the lessons I taught him all those years ago. When his independence threatens his safety, I realize my feelings for Hanlon have shifted, creating a problem bigger than any avalanche threatening this mountain.

HANLON My diagnosis left me with physical limitations most people get hung up on. Except Stone. He’s the one person who always made me feel like I could do anything. And then he left, never knowing how much his absence nearly destroyed me. I didn’t ask to be placed at Ricochet Ridge, but as Stone and I figure out how to work together, the energy between us shifts. When he finds out I’m gay, it shifts again, threatening to pull us both under.

THE RISK Their connection is a ticking time bomb. If their parents find out, the fallout will be catastrophic, tearing the family apart forever. But on the mountain, the "rules" of their family tree feel less important than the heat rising between them. Stone remains the only person who looks past Hanlon’s physical struggles to see his strength, creating an intimacy that is as healing as it is dangerous. Attraction isn’t the only danger on the mountain. With each new inch of precipitation, the snowpack weakens, threatening to break free, and while the threat of an avalanche feels metaphorical, the physical danger it poses is paramount.

This was good and entertaining, but something was missing for me, more like 3.75 but gladly rounded up.

I have to start by saying that the setup (ski patrol, avalanche research) was different and interesting.

I liked both main characters and their story; how Stone was always Hanlon's protector (well, until he wasn't) and how Hanlon always just wanted to be with Stone and make him proud. They were sweet, fun and hot together, but still, for some reason, my feelings and excitement towards them as a couple (or overall toward this book) remained a bit muted.

I also liked Logan's role as a supporting character -I would assume we will get a book about him and a certain bestie 😏

I love it when books portray any kind of disability, PD, or illness, so I really appreciated that Hanlon’s background and life with cerebral palsy was included here. I liked this part of the story, and how Stone took care of him, no questions asked.

This might not be a book I’ll remember forever, but I’m glad I read it. I’ve had this author’s books on my TBR list for ages, but for some reason I’ve always avoided them—now at least I know I can venture to read some of her other books as well.

I think I’m more leaning towards 3.5⭐️ but idk because I did enjoy it and I do love a stepbrother romance. Also, this was set in the Montana mountains and I don’t know a lot about search and rescue / ski patrol / avalanches etc and that part was pretty interesting!

I did like both Stone & Hanlon.

And I kinda hope that there will be a standalone focused on Logan & chase 👀.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I saw a review of this story on bookstagram and spotted the word stepbrothers — you already know I had no choice but to read it immediately 😤❄️.

And this one genuinely surprised me with how unique it is.

The setting alone sets it apart 🏔️. We meet Stone and Hanlon — estranged stepbrothers who haven't seen each other in years. Stone is a team leader at a ski resort, responsible for predicting avalanches and keeping everyone safe. It's such a specific, atmospheric world that immediately pulled me in. And then Hanlon shows up as the new intern, and suddenly everything Stone thought he had under control starts shifting beneath his feet ❄️🥺.

What truly impressed me was how masterfully the author weaves so many elements together without it ever feeling overcrowded. Disability rep, a love triangle where Stone only ever had eyes for one person, a bi-awakening, and on top of that — genuine suspense and drama that had me holding my breath at times 😤. It all fits together so naturally and with so much care.

If you love the taboo thrill of the stepbrother trope as much as I do, this one is an absolute must-read 🩷. It's bold, it's emotional, and it lingers with you long after you finish.

❄️ Stepbrothers
❄️ Forced Proximity
❄️ Demi rep
❄️ Disability rep
❄️ Bi-awakening
❄️ It's always been you
❄️ Virgin
❄️ Love triangle
❄️ Rimming, BJ, HJ, dirty talk

✨ARC Book Review✨

If you enjoy forbidden romance, Jillian D. Wray is your queen 👏🏻✨

This book was so well done! The way I consumed it 😩

It’s about Stone and Hanlon, who are stepbrothers but haven’t been close in years. They end up working together, which forces them back into each other’s lives.

They’ve always looked out for one another, but now they’re starting to notice each other in a different light 👀 Sweat dripping down abs, lingering stares… the attraction is definitely there. Crossing the line has never felt so tempting.

I felt that this story developed in a natural way. Both men came into the dynamic with prior issues with each other, and it was addictive to watch their perceptions change.

Read this for:
✨ Forbidden Romance
✨ Sexual Awakening
✨ MM Romance
✨ Enemies to Lovers
✨ Slow Burn

I have loved every book in this series so far and im sure the next one is going to be just as good!

Stone and Hanlon's relationship starts a little strained but the way it develops into something so much more was so lovely to read. The way they just went with their feelings - other people's thoughts be damned - was refreshing and I loved that they let nothing stand in their way, even their parents.

The avalanche had my heart in my throat for a minute there but I loved that Hanlon was prepared to sacrifice everything for Stone - true love prevails!

The epilogue was the perfect closure for their story and i love their love.

The book had me giggling along with them especially when they sent Lana and James out on an errand that really didn't need two people 🤭

I would also LOVE to see a book starring Chase and Logan!

And the bonus scene - perfection!

📚

Hanlon and Stone have been Stepbrothers since Stone was young, he moved out at the age of 18. He resented Hanlon for being thrust into his life and Stone felt forced to take care of him (Hanlon has mild Cerebral Palsey). Stone felt pushed aside by his dad and stepmum whilst Hanlon was being 'pampered'

As soon as he could, Stone left and found a job at Ricochet Ridge as a member of ski patrol. The only struggle he has in life was coming to terms with thoughts of liking men.

That was until Hanlon gets a job as an intern there, and Hanlon being the fiercely independent guy he is sometimes puts himself in danger with the his limitations due to his CP. Stone's protective instincts begin to kick in again and once Stone finds out Hanlon is gay...well the relationship soon shifts - especially because Hanlon feels the same way!

ARC REVIEW

This was stepbrother MM romance at its finest DELICIOUS from start to finish.

Life (or let’s be real… Lana, Hanlon’s mother) bringing Stone and Hanlon back into each other’s lives? Oh, she definitely did not think that one through 😂

Stone’s reaction to Hanlon showing up at his workplace was absolute gold. “I don’t want him here”… meanwhile being instantly protective and jealous of every man in Hanlon’s orbit. Totally normal behaviour 🙈

And then we have Stone offering Hanlon his guest room… which, let’s be honest, doesn’t get much use.

I loved when Stone and Hanlon got together. They had each other’s backs and fully embraced the “we’re in love, deal with it” mindset. The scene where they get caught by their parents? Hilarious. Just straight-up “well… yeah” energy.

Hanlon might be the younger one, but he was easily the steadier, stronger presence between them. I loved how his disability was part of him, but never what defined his strength.

The third act was a great surprise, it didn’t revolve around doubts about their relationship, which felt so refreshing.

Also, can we please get more of Chase? Hanlon confesses he’s dating his stepbrother and Chase’s response is basically, “cool… when are we going skiing?” The definition of unbothered 😂

And Logan’s redemption arc? Chef’s kiss.

Definitely one of the best MM stepbrother romances out there.

Jillian does it again!🩵

This is the third book in the Ricochet Ridge series, and they just keep getting better and better.

Stepbrothers? Yes, please!🤭🥵

After moving out, Stone didn’t see his stepbrother Hanlon for seven years. Stone now works at Ricochet Ridge as an avalanche control patrol officer.
One day, he gets a phone call: his stepbrother Hanlon will be doing his internship with him.

There’s so much unfinished business between them. Stone had his reasons for leaving all those years ago, and they haven’t spoken since.

So, will this internship be a complete disaster, or can they finally work through their differences?

Well… you can probably guess where this is going.🤭

The two of them form an incredible bond once they finally open up and talk about what really happened in the past.

A forbidden romance between stepbrothers?
All that tension… 🥵 God, this was so good!

Jillian, you really know how to write beautiful love stories, and those plot twists at the end of every book? This one had me on the edge of my seat!🤯

I loved these two with all my heart, and I can’t wait to read the final book in the series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Avalanche is the third book in Jillian D. Wray’s entertaining Ricochet Ridge series. These books are linked by the shared location of the ski resort, but work completely as standalones. The setting is the same across the books, but each features new characters and there is no story overlap. The real tie is the ski resort and I like the way that Wray has developed the setting in a way that brings some familiarity to the books, but keeps them independent.

One thing I also really enjoyed here is learning more about their jobs on ski patrol. Stone is in charge of the avalanche division and they monitor the snow conditions and blast the mountain to trigger controlled avalanches and prevent dangerous and unexpected avalanches from risking lives. Hanlon is focused more on the scientific and research end, studying weather patterns and testing the snow to help figure out when conditions are ripe for avalanches. I found it all really interesting and it added a nice side element to the story to explore the work they do for the resort.

**I was gifted an ARC Copy of this book**

I was so excited for the third installment in the Ricochet Ridge series, and it absolutely delivered. Stone and Hanlon were such sweet characters—I loved their dynamic, and their chemistry felt deep and genuine from the start.

One of my favorite parts of their story was the way Stone was so protective of Hanlon without ever limiting him because of his disability. It struck such a great balance and made their relationship feel even more meaningful. And Hanlon? Total sweetheart with a sunshine personality… who also takes charge in the bedroom? Yeah, I swooned. Add in the piercings and the slutty glasses, and he was easily my favorite.

Their relationship developed in a way that felt really natural and soft, which I appreciated. I especially loved the forced proximity from their jobs and how Stone pushed Hanlon to step outside his comfort zone while still always looking out for him. Watching Stone slowly realize his feelings for Hanlon were more than brotherly was also so fun to read.

Once they decided to be together, I loved that they didn’t let outside opinions shake them—it only made them stronger as a couple. And that avalanche scene? I was fully on edge when Hanlon went to find Stone. I was completely invested in how it would all play out and rooting hard for their HEA.

I’ll admit, the mom and Logan got on my nerves a bit, but I did like how their roles ultimately reinforced the bond between Stone and Hanlon. I was also convinced Logan and Chase would be next after their hospital room scene… but I was wrong!

The pacing felt spot on, and I was honestly a little sad when it ended. You can tell the author did their research too—the details about living in snow country, safety, and weather conditions were super interesting and added a lot to the story.

If you’re into tropes like stepbrothers, dislike-to-lovers, disability rep, slow burn, soulmates, forbidden relationships, and low angst, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up.

I truly loved Avalanche and devoured it in less than a day. This MM romance had the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and angsty, with just enough taboo to keep things interesting as our MMCs are estranged stepbrothers.

The chemistry was so good, the emotional tension really worked for me, and I loved watching their relationship develop despite all the complications and history between them. It definitely had that “just one more chapter” feeling where I kept needing to know what would happen next.

If you love MM romance with angst, family tension, spice, and plenty of feelings, I’d absolutely recommend picking this one up. I’ll definitely be continuing with the rest of the Ricochet Ridge series… and surely I can’t be the only one hoping for a Chase x Logan book?? 👀

I was so looking forward to meeting stepbrothers, Stone and Hanlon, and they didn’t disappoint. I adored them both, though okay, I’ll admit it took me a moment to warm up to Stone, who was a bit of a grumpy a**hole when we first meet him and not particularly welcoming to Hanlon (though to be fair on him, he does have good reason).

By the end of the book though, I would have fought for Stone to the end of the earth. He’s got some complicated big feelings about the past, but you can rely on him to always do the right thing by Hanlon with the other man’s wishes being his top priority. Once he’s over the initial surprise of Hanlon’s arrival, he begins to show his true self more.

I did melt every time we heard about anything Stone did for Hanlon as a youngster. He’s always been in Hanlon’s corner, encouraging and giving him the freedom to try new things on his own terms. Stone gave Hanlon the chance to grow and thrive, finding out what works best for him rather than holding him back from doing things due to his cerebral palsy like everyone else does. I mean, honestly, how could Stone not win you over after knowing that?

And Hanlon surprised me too, in so many ways. I related to his stubbornness in a big way. Hanlon is so much wiser than his years, and I loved his attitude towards Stone’s demisexuality. The younger man makes his stepbrother feel comfortable in his own skin, encouraging him to follow his feelings rather than worrying about labelling his sexuality.

My favourite thing about these two is how 100% committed they are to each other, without hesitation. There’s no wavering about whether the other is who they want; they’re solid in their commitment and there’s absolutely no doubts about loyalty. I adored that they both stand together adamantly against their parents and to anyone else who may not support them.

Oh my gosh, MY HEART WAS IN MY THROAT during those chapters! Talk about getting the emotions flowing. I’ll admit there were some tears.

It may have seemed like it was these two against the world for a second, but they are rocks for each other, and I loved that on every level. Seeing how far Hanlon is willing to go for Stone, and vice versa, just showed me everything I needed to know about whether these two should be endgame.

Also, Chase and Logan = YES PLEASE!

----

Some of my favourite quotes

“You were always the one person who made me feel normal, Stone.”

Hanlon isn’t pulling any punches, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I refuse to admit that my favorite version of him is the one that pushes back a little.

“Thank you for telling me, Stone. You shouldn’t have to hide that part of yourself. No one should.”

Whether I like it or not, Hanlon’s been mine since he came into my life sixteen years ago.

“Hanlon, why avalanches?” “Because I wanted the chance to protect you for once,”

“You’re going to kill me,” “Nah, I’m going to be the reason you finally start living.”

“The more I think about it, Hanlon, the more I realize it makes total sense that it’s you. It’s only ever been you, even if the whole having sex part of the equation is new.”

Of course, Hanlon is still the golden boy. He’s fucking radiant. He’s the entire goddamn sun. But he has some tarnish underneath his shine, and it excites the hell out of me.

Hanlon Winchester has always been mine. The only difference is now I know it...Well, that and I get his body along with his heart and his mind.

“It doesn’t matter what he sees. I only see you.”

“I want to stay with him. I’ve spent years worrying about him, being angry because I felt like I’d be the last to know if there was an accident. And despite the pain from his absence, he’s been my hero since I was six years old. With Stone is where I belong.”

“Yeah, Skittles. You’re my avalanche.”

Avalanche An MM Stepbrother Romance (Ricochet Ridge) by Jillian D. Wray
ARC REVIEW
Avalanche (Ricochet Ridge 3) di Jillian D. Wray
Voto: 4 stelle

ENGLISH REVIEW:
Avalanche is the third book in the Ricochet Ridge series. The main characters are Hanlon and Stone, two step-brothers. I really loved this book; the author did an awesome job describing the settings where the story takes place. I feel like I was right there with the characters; I truly loved their relationship. The love story was perfect, the slow burn well described and I devoured the book because I wanted to see how they fell in love. Stone went through an amazing glow up. I didn’t like him at first, but as I kept reading and discovered more about him, especially how he interacted with Hanlon and how he cared for him it made me love him. I also loved Hanlon; I found his independence at all costs to be very well portrayed. Hanlon and Stone truly have a special bond that began when they were children but grew over time. I think they really are a beautiful couple.
I didn’t like Logan because of the things he said and his behavior. I was hoping for his redemption at the end of the book, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.
I recommend this book if you like forbidden love stories, with step-siblings who become lovers, but especially if you enjoy stories set in beautiful places like snowy mountains.
I’d like to thank The Author Agency and Jillian D. Wray for the ARC copy.

I am not okay. This book grabbed me by the collar, dragged me up a freezing mountain, and then buried me in feelings I did NOT sign up for ❄️💔

Avalanche by Jillian D. Wray is messy, intense, a little dangerous, and completely addictive. Like… I knew it was going to be angsty, but I was not prepared for the emotional landslide this delivered.

Stone and Hanlon??? I’m done. They’ve taken up permanent residence in my brain.

The tension in this book is unreal. Four years of silence sitting between them like packed ice, every conversation cracking just a little more until everything starts to shift. You can feel it building, slow and suffocating, like standing on a mountain knowing something underneath you is about to give way. And when it does?? Yeah. Good luck recovering.

Stone had me in a chokehold. The protectiveness? The internal conflict? The way he keeps trying to shove his feelings into a locked box labeled “absolutely not” while his actions scream the exact opposite?? Sir, please. Be serious. I loved how rough around the edges he was, how he tried to do the “right” thing even when it was eating him alive.

And Hanlon… oh my heart. He’s not written as fragile or pitiful, which I LOVED. He’s strong, stubborn, and fully his own person, but you can still feel the weight of everything he’s been through. The way he sees Stone, the way he needs him but also refuses to be defined by him… it’s layered and raw and honestly beautiful.

The disability rep felt thoughtful and grounded, not just thrown in for drama. It actually shaped who Hanlon is without reducing him to it, which made their connection feel even more meaningful.

And the romance?? SLOW. BURN. Like painfully slow in the best way. Every glance, every brush of hands, every moment of “we shouldn’t” just made it worse (better). The forbidden aspect adds this constant edge of tension that never lets up. You KNOW it’s complicated. You KNOW it’s risky. And yet you’re sitting there like… go on 👀

Also the mountain setting?? It’s not just a backdrop, it’s basically a character. The avalanche metaphor running through the whole story is chef’s kiss. The danger outside mirrors everything going on between them, and it just builds this constant sense of pressure that had me devouring pages like I was running out of oxygen.

And when everything finally starts to break?? Emotional carnage. I was stressed, invested, slightly feral.

But the HEA? Worth it. Completely worth it. I came out the other side emotionally wrecked but satisfied, like surviving a storm you low-key want to experience again.

Stone and Hanlon are easily favourites. No hesitation. No competition. They hurt me and healed me in the same breath and I would absolutely put myself through it again.

If you want forbidden, angsty, slow-burn romance with actual depth and stakes, this one delivers HARD. Just don’t expect to walk away unscathed.

“You’re going to kill me.”
“Nah, I’m going to be the reason you finally start living.”

Stone left home and his step brother, Hanlon, when he was eighteen. A few years after, Hanlon came into his life as a new intern in his workplace and they are now working together while dealing with their strained relationship.

Oh wow, I'm learning things everyday. As someone who lives on a tropical country, there's no snow here so I am amazed with how much science it goes with those working in a ski resort, or even triggering some avalanche to keep people safe.

Anyways, I read book 2 last month and it was a fun to see different perspective of people working in snow and this is no different. This one deals with a much different side of things, with much more higher stakes.

We saw glimpses of Stone in the previous book, which honestly intrigued me. Then I saw the tropes of this book, and I was even more intrigued. Now, I have high standards with the MM stepbrother trope, so I went into this book not expecting much.

Here's the real kicker, this book surprised me in a good way. 50% in, I was just meh with all of it. Sure, there's great banter, there's simmering tension and the chemistry was palpable but I was not really sold on them yet. However, that changed as I go along the book.

I usually have a poker face when reading, like you don't know what goes on my mind. This book made me say WTF out loud, seven times. That's a huge amount coming from me. Safe to say, I did enjoy my reading experience.

Characters-wise, I love both characters especially Hanlon. He's described as Clark Kent and I am here for it. I like Stone as he's the confused demisexual representation which I appreciate. There's history between them that stemmed from childhood so I do understand that they need to communicate to overcome that obstacle, which they did.

The second half of this book was honestly so good. This becomes my favorite part as their attraction became apparent, the higher the stakers were. With them hiding their relationship, the more it became forbidden. Oh to be a fly on the wall on all those scenes because it would've made good drama. I was gasping out loud and having visceral reactions that I love it.

I probably yapped for so long, but safe to say I will be reading the next one. Looking forward to reading more Jillian D. Wray books!

P.S. I also think there's something being hinted here and I was rooting for them to be a couple so I might keep an eye out on that.

Couple: Hanlon and Stone.

Structure: 1st person. Present tense. Dual POV. Third book in a series.

This was a really sweet story. Stone touched my heart deeply. I could feel just how pushed aside he was because of Hanlon's diagnosis. I honestly think their parents did a terrible job when it comes to adapting kids to a new family configuration. Of course they loved both of them, but Stone's pain was invisible to them, and he had to take the punches in all situations. To be completely sincere, I wish he'd had more of a redemption from both parents. He deserved to tell them exactly how he'd felt when he was a kid and have been more reassured about their love for him 🥺

And sweet Hanlon, I loved him so much. Such a strong person, trying to overcome his difficulties and widening his limits. Fighting for his independency. I also love how he stood up for Stone at all times, but also never accepted his bullshit at the start. They completed each other so well. Their will to take care for each other, while also helping the other grow as a person. They brought up the best in each other.

Logan and Chase were also such a good treat, and I hope we get their story as well. I felt SO sorry for Logan. Yes, he was an asshole a few times there, but when he tells Stone his side of the story? Man, my heart broke for him. He is amazing and deserves to find someone who'll love him so deeply, they'd be willing to risk their own life for him. And Chase, such an adorable friend. Right from the start, I thought he actually did have some sort of curiosity when it came to Hanlon. Like he kept some truth behind his jokes. And I believe him seeing Han and Stone together awakened something good in him. Let's see where all that goes 🤭

And oh my God, I was sure what happened near the end was going to end, but I never expected to feel so much. I shed I tear. Especially during the Those two love each other SO much. It drips from the pages, from every word. They are extremely romantic—and horny for each other LOL

I can't recommend this series enough. It's easily becoming one of my comfort readings. Can't wait for Summit 💕

What happens when 2 stepbrothers who dislike each other are forced to work together? Jillian has once again worked her magic and given us an amazing story with complex characters that will have you vested in this story from beginning. Stone is grumpy but very caring, observant, protective and exceptional at his job. And Hanlon is smart, hardworking, sweet, and determined not to let his medical condition get in his way to achieving his dream job. When Stone finds out that Hanlon will be working with him as an intern, his feelings of resentment towards Hanlon comes back rushing with vengeance and Hanlon too is not happy with the situation. But once they start working together, that resentment between them slowly starts to fade away as they see each other in new light. Hanlon gets to witness Stone in action where Stone takes charge of a situation and resolves it quickly, effectively and efficiently and Stone gets to know Hanlon as smart, confident and passionate man who is tenacious and doesn’t let his medical condition weigh him down. Stone’s protective and caring nature towards Hanlon becomes apparent when Hanlon struggles with his condition and his fear of flying. Working together makes them notice each other physically, and their attraction becomes apparent when they feel jealous of others interacting with them. It takes them a minute to act on their attraction because of the taboo nature of it but when they do act, the chemistry between them is explosive. Along with exploring this new attraction between them, they also get to know each other again as adults and this makes them come close. It was sweet to read how they fought for their relationship and didn’t let the opinions of others affect them. Stone and Hanlon definitely make an amazing couple with how attune they are towards each other. With that said, I will highly recommend this book for its fantastic story and characters.

"Avalanche"
(Ricochet Ridge # 3)
by Jillian D. Wray

Tropes:
❄️MM Romance
❄️Stepbrothers
❄️Enemies to Lovers
❄️Opposites Attract
❄️Disability Rep
❄️Slow burn

This book follows Stone and Hanlon.

Stone's father and Hanlon's mother married when they were both little kids (Stone is 4 years older than Hanlon) and they became stepbrothers.
Hanlon has a mild cerebral paralysis so he is treated with all the cares in the world throughout their childhood and adolescence and Stone is always in the background in the family's life. So when Stone turns 18, he moves out of their house to live his life independently.

Fast forward to today: Stone is the team leader of the avalanche team patrol and rescue in Ricochet Ridge ski resort. Hanlon is assigned there to a 3 month internship and they end up living together.
And when they are working and living together 24/7, they start to feel the heaviness of the taboo that is a stepbrothers' attraction.
And then this physical attraction evolves rapidly into a love between these two young men who have a whole life together ahead of them.

This book, although set in a cold environment, is warm, spicy, and scorching. And it contains a stepbrother relationship capable of melting the snow.

Releasing April 30

Thank you to the author and The Author Agency for this ARC.

----

some of my favorite quotes:

"You were always the one person who made me feel normal, Stone."

Slowly, Hanlon turns to face me. And fuck. My little stepbrother grew up.

It's like years of resentment and bitterness are sloughing off, allowing the organ inside my chest to beat again.

I would have sacrificed everything to keep him safe, including myself.

Competence is sexy. Especially when it's coming from a six-foot-tall, chiseled god who looks like he was born from the mountain itself.

"You're disgustingly attractive. You are effortlessly handsome, ruggedly sexy"

“You’re going to kill me.”
“Nah, I’m going to be the reason you finally start living.”

"I belong to you, huh?"
"Every. F*cking. Inch."

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of reading the entire Ricochet Ridge series ahead of release, and Avalanche by Jillian D. Wray might be the most intense one yet.

Stone left home at eighteen, cutting ties and burying the weight of responsibilities he never asked for—especially when it came to his stepbrother, Hanlon. Years later, he’s still running—from his past, from his family, and from the truth about himself. When he finally begins to question his sexuality, one impulsive decision changes everything: he matches on a dating app with Logan… his helicopter pilot.

As if that isn’t complicated enough, one phone call turns his world upside down. Hanlon is coming to his location for an internship.

Hanlon knows exactly who he is. Confident, determined, and far stronger than anyone gives him credit for, he refuses to be defined by his mild cerebral palsy. He doesn’t want protection—he wants independence, respect, and the chance to prove he can stand on his own. But the moment Stone sees him again, old instincts take over… and so do feelings neither of them are prepared to face.

What follows is a slow, undeniable unraveling.

Every glance lingers too long. Every argument cuts too deep. Every moment between them crackles with tension neither can ignore. Stone is already teetering on the edge of self-discovery—but falling for Hanlon? That’s a line he never thought he’d cross… and one that could cost him everything.

“I’ve never felt more loved than when Hanlon is by my side. This strong, brave, intelligent man loves me, wants me, and is willing to risk everything for me.”

This story aches in the best way. It’s raw, emotional, and filled with a kind of longing that seeps into every page. Watching Stone fight himself while Hanlon stands unwavering makes every moment hit harder. The stakes feel real, the connection feels inevitable, and the payoff is completely unforgettable.

An all-consuming, high-tension romance that doesn’t just pull you in—it refuses to let you go.

Avalanche by Jillian D. Wray, provided via The Author Agency, is an emotionally layered MM romance that combines forbidden love, emotional healing, disability representation, vulnerability, and reconnection into a deeply impactful reading experience.

The story follows Stone and Hanlon, whose strained stepbrother relationship slowly evolves into something much deeper after years of emotional distance and unresolved resentment.

One of the strongest aspects of the story is how emotionally understandable both characters feel throughout the progression of the relationship.

Stone’s resentment toward Hanlon and his father felt believable because much of his emotional pain stems from feeling overlooked and emotionally neglected while believing his father prioritized Hanlon’s needs over his own.

At the same time, Hanlon’s emotional journey also felt incredibly authentic. His desire to push beyond his physical limitations and prove that he could still function “normally” emotionally resonated strongly throughout the story.

As someone with personal experience navigating medical challenges and being special needs, I especially connected with the emotional aspects surrounding Hanlon’s struggle for independence and the pressure to feel “normal” again after life-changing circumstances.

The emotional progression between Stone and Hanlon becomes even stronger as Stone slowly steps back into a protective role within Hanlon’s life, though now layered with much more emotional complexity and vulnerability between them.

The relationship development feels gradual, emotional, and deeply rooted in understanding each other’s pain, fears, and emotional needs rather than only attraction.

Overall, Avalanche is a beautifully emotional MM romance filled with healing, vulnerability, emotional tension, disability representation, and deeply human relationship dynamics that stay with readers long after finishing the story.

Stone Addario is the leader of the avalanche search and rescue team on Ricochet Ridge, and he loves his job. Until he finds out that his long lost stepbrother, Hanlon, is on his way out to RR to do an internship on the mountain alongside him.

Hanlon is wary of seeing his older stepbrother again. They were never super close, and he always felt like a burden to Stone due to his mild cerebral palsy. He's also a little angry at Stone, considering the second he turned 18, he left Vermont and moved all the way to the other side of the country, barely speaking to Han again.

Now Stone is his boss, and their animosity makes it hard to work together. But for some reason, even though Stone has never really felt an attraction to anyone before, his stubborn, sexy stepbrother is awakening all sorts of feelings inside him.

But the two men know that there are so many things stacked against them: their family ties, the fact that Stone is Han's boss, and so much more. But unfortunately, the heart wants what the heart wants, and this is a risk that they're willing to take.

*happy sigh* I just love Ricochet Ridge. Every single story, though always different, is just so good. Stone and Han had immediate (angry) chemistry, amazing banter, and when they decided they wanted each other, they were all in and totally obsessed. And the way Jillian writes spice? 🥵 It hits so good every single time.

Han's physical limitations were written in a really great way. He didn't allow his disease to hinder him or define him, but both men acknowledged it and made adjustments for it. And Han was a FORCE, I loved him so much.

Also I love these books because there's always an action or physical element to them, a little bit of drama and suspense, which makes the love and connection between the two MCs even sweeter. Jillian's writing is so good. It sucks me in and makes me absolutely race through the books just to see what happens.

I don’t know what it is about this series, but I gobble it up every. single. time. It doesn’t matter how many books in, I’m sat, invested, and absolutely eating it up.

This one had SO much tension, and I loved it. The whole stepbrothers-who-haven’t-spoken-in-four-years dynamic will always be a favorite of mine, and even more so if they are already a little bit further in life. With that undercurrent that one of them had always been quietly taking care of the other, cause that's the kind of history does something to me.

Also, I really appreciated the disability rep with Harlon. It felt thoughtful and empowering. He was never reduced to a victim or turned into a “poor him” character, which I’m always wary of. He was living his life, navigating challenges when they came, but the story never made his disability his entire identity. I loved that.

That said, I did notice a couple of plot holes, mostly smaller detail inconsistencies, but enough that they pulled me out of the story when they happened. Not enough to ruin the book for me, but enough that I noticed.

I almost wish one of the two spicy scenes had been swapped for a scene of deeper emotional intimacy. The chemistry was THERE, no question, but I think one more vulnerable, emotionally connective moment would have made the love feel even more intense, real, and authentic.

And can we talk about a certain pilot??? Because I NEED him to get his own romance story.

Overall, another addictive entry in a series I apparently cannot quit, not that I want to.

Thank you so much to Jillian D. Wray, and The Author Agency for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review<3

I'm officially OBSESSED with the Ricochet Ridge series! I'm so happy that Stone + Hanlon popped my stepbrothers cherry!!! This book made me feel everything! Tension, vulnerability, little quiet adorable moments between the chaos that absolutely melted me - UGHHH just so good! There's this emotional weight to the story that pulled me in immediately, and then it's balanced out by just enough hope and connection. I was definitely completely and utterly invested in these two.

Stone - the intense and protective older stepbrother, with a kind of rough-around-the-edges type energy. Hanlon - the strong, grounded, and resilient younger stepbrother. Definitely more outgoing, and knows what he wants. They're estranged for some years (only learning of each others' lives through their parents) until Hanlon's internship places him with Stone at Ricochet Ridge to learn all about Ski Patrol + the science behind Avalanches. These two had an amazing dynamic driven by their tense history, but moved forward by their push-and-pull chemistry, and all that bottled up emotion.

Read if you love...
*MM romance
*A broody MMC who has zero experience and doesn't know what his sexual orientation is
*A resilient MMC who doesn't let his cerebral palsy stop him from living his life to the fullest
*Ski Patrol vibes - aka hot guys on snowmobiles saving lives
*Forbidden/taboo love - they're stepbrothers
*Emotional scars and only one person can heal you
*Survival mode level high stakes

If you haven't read this series, each book can be read as a standalone - but I highly recommend reading them anyways because they're THAT good! One book left - SUMMIT is up next and releasing in May!

I absolutely adored these two and I already want more! Avalanche has officially claimed the top spot of my favorite in this series so far!

From the first page, I was hooked. First of all… stepbrothers. Say less. Add in the THICK tension between Stone and Hanlon and I’m sold. Sign me up. These two have a history that’s messy, complicated, and just a bit heartbreaking. Hanlon’s mild cerebral palsy led their parents to handle him with kid gloves, which in turn left Stone feeling overlooked and resentful. And those feelings don’t just disappear overnight.

Fast forward after years of silence, and they’re suddenly thrown back together when Hanlon lands an internship at Ricochet Ridge…with Stone. Cue the tension, cause neither of them are happy about it.

I really appreciated how Hanlon’s disability was portrayed. It is a part of who he is and was never shown as a weakness. He’s stubborn, determined, and fully committed to proving that he’s capable. But it doesn’t matter how many years have passed, Stone's protective instincts come right back. Along with some unexpected feelings.

You could literally feel their connection building with every page, growing into something so much stronger, deeper, and impossible to ignore. And when things finally shift between them? They are all in. No hesitation. They both know what they want and nothing and no one will stop them. They were so gone for one another, and I was sooo here for it. I love a good possessive and obsessive couple. The chemistry? Surprised the heck out of me, but in a good way. It was so so so good! Who knew nerdy Hanlon had it in him.

ALSO, I’m going to need Chase and Logan’s story, immediately. Please?

I received a copy from the author and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion.

This is the third book in the series and I loved it! I swear each book just keeps getting better and better. I loved watching Stone and Hanlon grow from childhood resentment to I would die for you type of love. Once they crossed that line, it was impossible to stop the fall and I was invested beginning to end. I recommend this book if you love books about two stepbrothers forced back together who desperately try to stop their attraction for one another while reconnecting and soothing over past hurts as they navigate rough terrain and unpredictable conditions.

This one was sweet and spicy…and fucking stressful too!

I fear the plot in this was juicy af, and idgaf about the stepbrothers being...stepbrothers. I fear that's the whole point, so what if it's a little taboo? Isn't that what we signed up for? Plus, it was pretty clear they were never brotherly. Big boy Stone felt like an only child even in the memories, and Hanlon was 14 the last time he spent any real time with his 'brother'.

Anyway, call me a Targaryen, the way I enjoy this. The tension was delicious, the self-realizations, the giving in, the desire...ugh, so good. Both of them were starved for the other, so the yearning was amazing. I truly loved that they couldn't keep their hands off each other.

Stone was my angel. He was a dick, but he was just confused; he was wondering why he wanted his 'brother' when he didn't want anyone else. His arc with Logan pmo bad, because where did Logan find the AUDACITY?! Anyway, Stone was so misunderstood by his own parents and even by Hanlon at first. The way he was finally happy and was willing to risk everything for Han was my Roman Empire, and I love this man.

Hanlon...brave mf. I was a little reluctant when I read the mild cerebral palsy trope, but I trust Jillian, and thank god I did. He was resilient, independent, feisty, and so fucking sassy. I loved his personality, his glasses, and his look-like-a-bottom-fuck-like-a-god vibe. His devotion to Stone really shone bright there in the end, but I could feel it before the dire moments. He would have sacrificed his relationship with anyone who didn't accept their love.

What a story, Jillian, TAA, beyond grateful for the early copy.

HOW DOES JILLIAN DO IT!? I am GOB-SMACKED. FIVE FREAKING STARS AND MY WHOLE HEART!

Excuse me while I’m still spinning from how much I loved this book. I mean, COME ON—forbidden stepbrothers, demisexual rep, and disability rep? SHUT UP AND READ THIS BOOK! But if you need a little more convincing, let me tell you why this story is everything.

The way we meet these two men—going from a nonexistent relationship to yearning for each other so much they’re willing to risk EVERYTHING for just one more moment together—was perfection.
I adored how Hanlon was portrayed. Anyone who lives with a disability will appreciate the delicate care Jillian took with his character; he struggles, but he thrives. Hanlon doesn’t just exist—he lives and refuses to let anything hold him back. Stone is the only one who truly respects that independence while perfectly balancing the protective instinct to keep him safe. It was so beautiful to watch them learn to lean on each other, not out of necessity, but because they earned that trust.

Stone absolutely DESTROYED ME. The way he cares for Han is a whole new level of love. He never pushes or restricts him; he just maintains this constant, quiet awareness. He anticipates Hanlon’s needs and plans ways for them to experience everything together without overstepping. Being around Han also allows Stone to take a retrospective look at his past and his family dynamics, while finally opening his eyes to his own sexuality.

Stone and Han are the definition of unconditional love—a soulmate connection so all-consuming you’d give up everything just to have them in the end. This is the kind of book that stays with you long after the last page.

❄️ARC REVIEW❄️

Stone & Hanlon were amazing.

They had a rough start as both of them had some resentment and unresolved feelings from their past but man were they hot together!!!

Hanlon was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy as a baby and his mom cuddled him way too much to the point she was too overprotective.

Stone was the best step brother to him until he up and left him and they spent 4 years with barely any contact...

They had chemistry for days! Stones was definitely demi sexual but once he got sexual with Hanlon all bets were off, he was horny and sweet, sexy and a total submissive 🥵🫠 Hanlon was such an unexpected surprise! The way he took charge with Stone was hot af I loved how sweet and caring he was to Stone and their banter was perfection 👌🏽

The parents were obnoxious after they found out they were together especially Hanlon’s mom, I wanted to shake her...she made me so mad, but I could see her point and after she explained why she was hesitant even more so. I freaking loved her in that Bonus epilogue she absolutely redeemed herself!!

The accident was intense and i was on the edge the whole time I was reading that part, my goodness Hanlon was so perfect 🥹 I loved that he risked it all for Stone..

I felt so bad for Logan though, he was a jerk to them but he was in love with Stone and that was just sad...I definitely saw a spark there with him and Chase maybe it could happen?!?!?!

This has absolutely being my favorite so far and I can't wait for Zeke's book. His story will be emotional for sure!! This series has been so freaking good Im sad it will be over soon. Im loving these Ricochet men 😍

Wow just wow.I thought the first two books were amazing but Avalanche was such a beautiful heartwarming story.

We all know stone from previous books. He’s broody . A leader. As known as a loner. He leaves his home when he’s ready 18 years old because he felt suffocated by being tailed by his stepbrother Hanlon. When he finds out that Han is going to do an internship at Richie with the Avalanche patrol he’s livid. They haven’t spoken to or seen each other in 6 years. Stone is also questioning his sexuality thinking something is wrong with him. Until he finds his step brother attractive and feels these feelings he never felt before.

Hanlon wow!! He’s was born with Milo cerebral palsy his parent babied him and treated him as if he was extremely fragile. Stone took on the big brother role and did not treat Han with kid gloves. Hanlon is just as upset about his internship at Ricochet let’s just say things did not start off good. What I loved about Hanlon was his strength his resilience. He’s all grown up doing what he’s loved since he was a child. Eventually Hanlon starts feeling attracted to Stone. Which in everyone eyes is considered Taboo.

Let’s just say things went from 0-100 fast. Seeing Hanlon be the one in control and in charge was so amazing. Helping stone figure out his sexuality. Of course the parents did not agree with this relationship at all. Until an unfortunate event happens and Hanlon and stone address the elephant in the room.

Though they grew up together yes they are stepbrothers. I loved the way they show growth together and love and protect each other. Consequences be damn.

Let’s just say they are each others person and I would not have it any other way.

Jillian really know how to write emotional and angst beautifully. If you have not read Melt or the fall line I suggest you do. I’m so looking forward to Summit!
