Through the Green Green Glass Door

Rate this book
A forgotten greenhouse. A moonlit ritual.
And a portal mysteriously unsealed…

When Scout’s parents are called away for work, her last hurrah before college ends abruptly. Instead, she’s shipped off to stay with her long-estranged, eccentric aunties on the south coast of England.

But things go from strange to stranger at Biddenmore Estate when the abandoned greenhouse blooms overnight and Scout’s reclusive aunties take it as a sign that she is the next Gatekeeper. Furious and trapped, Scout flees through the green glass door, stumbling into a realm upended by civil war.

Alaric is the last free fire steward of Landow, forced into hiding in the southern forests, and haunted by the fire he once served. When a human stumbles through a portal thought sealed for over a thousand years, accusations of treason fall squarely on Alaric’s shoulders.

More curious still, Alaric knows Scout is bonded to him. But why? And if he helps her, will she be his redemption or the final spark that burns it all down?

Book one of a sweeping portal fantasy duology. Perfect for fans of reluctant heroines, found family, elemental magic, and star-crossed fates.

I had the pleasure of being on the street team for Katie's book and I was not disappointed!
This story gave me more grown up Chronicles of Narnia vibes, except instead of a wardrobe there's portals! There was a lot to unpack which created a lot of questions! We have dual POV, which I always love, hidden identities, family secrets, betrayals, magic, grumpy x sunshine, and rivals to eventual lovers? Sign me up.
The pacing was perfect- not too fast, not too slow. The characters were very flawed and human, which I found made them very relatable. The FMC is a high schooler and we definitely see that reflected in her behavior, but she does go through a lot of growth along the way. The MMC is broody, but not overly so. The side characters add to the story.
There is a lot of time spent setting the scene and revealing information, which I can tell is going to set the next book up very nicely.
Based on how she set the stage in this one, I honestly think the second book is going to be even better!
Katie does a great job at eliciting emotions from the reader. I found myself thinking about the book when I wasn't reading it, putting myself in the FMC's shoes and imagining what it would be like to find myself in a different world and everything that would accompany that experience. The ending genuinely surprised me, which is not easy to do. I am very interested to see where this story goes and can’t wait for the second book!
If you like portal fantasy with clean romance, found family, slow burn, magic, action, betrayal, and biblical undertones, this book is for you!

I love the descriptions that pull you into this world. Scout has a path to choose in the summer after senior year with college on the horizon and this family secret was not in her 5 year plan! I knew going into this book that there were biblical parallels so it was fun seeing those shine throughout. The romance was clean and respectful it didn’t distract from the other themes of the book. By the second half you are pulled in, and things start clicking into place. I can’t wait for the next book!!

While visiting her eccentric Aunts on their coastal property in England, Scout discovers the Green House that transports her to an entirely different world, where she learns much more about her own capabilities. Except, these new capabilities make her both a danger to the people around her, and a danger to herself. It isn't long before she starts to feel an otherworldly connection to the only other outcast of Ruack Valley.

I was so fascinated by this fantasy! Through the Green Glass door is like The Secret Garden meets Narnia. Although it isn't explicitly religious, there are biblical undertones easter egged all throughout. While reading, I really felt like I'd been transported through those green glass doors. There's so many sharp descriptions of Landow and Ruack Valley that instantly brings the world building to life for a reader. It was a clean fantasy with fated mates, elemental magic, dual POV, and family secrets. I cannot wait to see what the next book brings.
