حوادثی که دراین رمان آمده مستندند امّا طبعا بنا بر روال معمول رمان‌‌های تاریخی، بعضی شخصیت‌‌ها به داستان اضافه شده‌اند. حمله‌‌های نظامی، تصمیمات کلان و گاه حتی تاکتیک‌‌های به‌کاررفته در نبرد که در رمان حاضر آمده‌‌اند، همگی پشتوانه‌‌های مستند تاریخی دارند و برخی از شخصیت‌‌ها احتمالاً ساخته ذهن نویسنده‌‌اند.

4.5 Golden Sparks

A historical fiction (leaning toward real history, though not always) about Cyrus the Great, founder of the Achaemenid Empire.

An emotionally engaging historical novel with likable characters, strong storytelling, and a satisfying long-form payoff.

I've always wanted a novel like this—one that doesn't read as if the author is simply checking off historical facts about Cyrus the Great (or any historical figure whose life I want to explore). This book came very close to fulfilling that wish. Not perfectly, as I'll explain below, but it was an admirable attempt, and I'm grateful for it.

It felt like a genuine novel rather than a dramatized history lesson. The characters felt believable, the stakes were high, and people's choices grew naturally out of who they were because the author took the time to establish their personalities and motivations. Instead of feeling like I was reading a summary of historical events, I felt as though I was living alongside these characters.

That said, I didn't agree with every fictional choice or every historical liberty the author took, so I settled on 4 rather than 5. Even so, it's a very strong and memorable 4-star read; one that came very close to earning the full five stars.
(it probably ends up in my TOP10 of the year for this reason, even if it's not technically a 5.)

همیشه وقتی صحبت از کوروش و ایران باستان بود من هم وسط بحث بودم...
حالا بعد از خوندن این کتاب به این نتیجه رسیدم که حتی بیشتر از قبل همه‌ی وجودم پره از عشق به ایران و به خصوص "کوروش کبیر"
به جد می‌تونم بگم یکی از بی‌نظیر ترین کتابایی بود که خوندم و باهاش زندگی کردم :)
از خوندن تک‌تک سطرهای کتاب لذت بردم و وجودم پر می‌شد از حس افتخار...
تمامی نوشته‌های این کتاب به لطف الکساندر با توجه به نوشته‌های مستند مثل سفرنامه‌ی هرودت نوشته شده و می‌شه با خیال راحت خوندش.
خلاصه که خیلی عشق کردم با خوندنش ^-^

I started reading this book thinking it was an actual biography of Cyrus. I'm not sure how I didn't figure it wasn't as I'm usually pretty diligent in getting the details of what I'm about to read. However, I think I was so happy to have stumbled across such a recently written book about Cyrus with such a cool book cover (;)) that I just blindly dove in. As I was reading the first few chapters I was thinking 'Man, this author sure is trying to make this history book read like a novel!'.....'Duhhhhh' I said to myself after I realized it WAS a novel... ;)
Then, of course, I contemplated whether I really wanted to waste my time reading historical fiction. Then you add to that that upon further investigation (after becoming acutely sensitive to the book's worth) I see that the author appears never to have written a book before. Thennnnn you add to THAT - I'd already observed the author's simplistic style of writing. So I really didn't know what I was going to get from this book. What I got was this:

- a story that eased me into a portion of ancient history and peoples in a way I could mentally digest and remember
- a story about what seemed to be a true and strong spiritual hero written with with a clarity of understanding of history and human spirituality and character on the author's part
- a story that made me eager to get back to reading it when I was away
from it
- a story that gave me the history that I so love to have in my reading
- a book that elicited a big booh hooing from me at the end due to the
love story

So in a nutshell, I found this book very valuable and fun to read. I don't think anyone would ever consider it fine literature as it is a little too exact for that and it does read like it was written for a movie in mind, but it was very solid and enjoyable. Possibly a favorite of mine but sometimes only time can tell how memorable a book turns out to be.

surprisingly i really liked this book. i couldnt put it down. and when i did put it down i couldnt stop thinking about it. it was really good. i never thought history can be written in such an intriging way. i never thought i would finish it. and thanks to alexander jovy i can't wait to get my hands on a book like this one. amazing.

I am enjoying this immensely, I didn't know much about this King of Persia but the novel style of writing has made it a pleasure to learn about him. I picked it up at the library never having seen this author before but being interested in all history I thought I would learn about something different and I certainly have.

The Iranians regard him as” their Father”, the Babylonians as “the liberator”, the Jews as ” The Anointed of the Lord” and the Greeks called him “The Law Giver”, I call this book my favorite read of this summer :)

I was given this book in error. They told me keep it or give it to someone instead of sending it back. I decided to read it though it wasn't really something I would normally read, but surprisingly I really enjoyed it. Love, wars, dedication and adventure keep me turning page after page. خیلی از خوندن این کتاب لذت بردم. کاش درسای تاریخ مدرسمونم اینقدر روون و جالب بهمون یاد می‌دادن. به شخصه با ۲۲ سال سن اطلاعات تاریخی از این کتاب یاد گرفتم که تا الان نمی‌دونستم. اینکه با تخیل نویسنده‌ام گره خورده بود داستان و خیلی هیجان‌انگیزتر کرده بود‌. خلاصه که پیشنهاد می‌کنم🤌🏻

Kind of a nice adventure story. I’m sure Cyrus was fascinating.

I didn’t find the romance, some of the other relationships and the details on why Cyrus did what he did all that compelling in this book though. I don’t think I could write any better so I hate to say this, but Jovy’s telling seemed a little amateurish. When compared to excellent historical fiction like some of Bernard Cornwell’s books such as Agincourt, Killer Angels by Micheal Shaara, Steven Pressfield’s Gates of Fire and even Guy Gavriel Kay’s historical fantasy as well as my favorite- Shogun by James Clavell (which I know was probably wildly inaccurate, but what a tale!), Cyrus, Prince of Persia: A Novel falls short. I’ve set a pretty high bar, so maybe it’s not fair to this author, but there it is.

Still, I think Jovy probably gets a lot of his facts right and I think this book is his recounting of other historical tellings of Cyrus’ story. It could be worse. I don’t regret reading it, but I would still like to find a Cyrus historical fiction story to match the quality of the other authors I’ve mentioned above.
