The Bed Wife Chronicles: Love brought them together. Would tradition tear them apart?
Once inseparable childhood friends, Luana and Baylin are now grown and in two separate worlds. Luana, the daughter of the town drunk, overlooks her family's goat farm to make ends meet. Baylin, Prince and future King of Grasmere, is off combatting the veils that lurk in the Kingdom.
However, fate intercedes with a time-honored tradition that has been custom for the past five hundred years. Luana's life is now forced into the hands of her long-lost childhood friend. Will resentment, hurt, and duty consume them? Or will Luana and Baylin find love and rekindle their friendship?
Author Suzanna Lynn is a full-time mom of three beautiful, energetic children and spends her days with them and her husband in a small town nestled in the deep rolling hills of Missouri.
Growing up in the Ozarks, as a child Suzanna spent her days wandering the fields and woods surrounding her home. While most children avoided the dark corners of the woods, she sought it out, imagining them to be filled with fairies, dragons and all number of creatures.
Having not lost her childhood imagination, Suzanna has written numerous poems, songs and short stories that won various awards in high school and college.
However, in 2014 she decided to stop wishing she could publish a book and made the dream a reality when she released The Bed Wife.
That first novella gave birth to two more books, completing the series, and stirred the embers of a new five-book series called The Untold Stories, which is currently in the works.
When she's not busy writing or spending time with her family, Suzanna loves to draw and paint, as well as scrapbook. She also has been known to volunteer with her children's school, the local Ladies Auxiliary veterans group and even the local zoo!
This is part one of a series of novella's set in the fictional realm of Wintervale. Our story occurs in the kingdom of Grasmere the largest and strongest of the five kingdoms. The inhabitants of this fantasy realm the Keld are an ancient bloodline with superior strength and stamina. So genre-wise this reads like a historical fantasy and reminds me almost of a fairy-tale retelling. Basically there is an ancient tradition to keep the bloodlines themselves strong that every century males of the royal line take a Bedwife to breed from the common stock. Eventually, they will take a wife from there own class and these chosen Bedwifes are really little better themselves than kept breeders. There is almost a certain honour and prestige among the lower classes attached to this position and the families of those chosen are compensated richly for there sacrifice. Prince Baylin chooses former childhood companion Luana for the coveted position. But where he sees it as an honour he is bestowing on her elevating her position almost she is less than convinced and fights his attentions from the get-go. So as I said earlier this is the first novella of three. I did enjoy this and the writing itself was descriptive and imaginative but I wasn't always feeling the actual connection between Baylin and Luana. Maybe because of the short length this somewhat failed to convince and invest me in their overall connection. I also felt that the two mains themselves could have done with some slight fleshing. Despite that, this was still an enjoyable and imaginative story and I thought the actual concept of this was a great idea. This very much had a whole fantasy fairy/tale kingdom vibe and I did like this aspect very much. This concluded itself in an HFN ending but the story itself here is yet to complete. There are two further novellas in this series to conclude Baylin and Luana's tale and great news no waiting as these stories are already completed. If your thing is the older type historical romances of past this one would definitely be a great fit for you, its got a real romantic old-time type vibe to the whole thing that I really did appreciate. I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Bed Wife (The Bed Wife Chronicles, #1).
This was a good love story. No sex until the very end, but strangely, I still liked it. (Which is rare). Add a little fighting, betrayal, and good old family rivalry and you've got a good, quick read. On to book number 2.
****The author provided me with a complimentary unedited advance copy of this book for my honest review****
Prince Baylin spends his time preparing to become the future king of Grasmere, he is loved by the people and he protects the people routinely leaving the castle and traveling to the towns to keep the trolls away. On one of these routine trips he sees beautiful a woman in a field with some goats, he knows this woman or the girl that she used to be. Luana is a commoner her father is a goat farmer who spends his days at the pub, she takes care of things and makes sure that her family is fed. When the Prince stops and helps her with her wayward goats, she realizes that he was her secret childhood friend from long ago taken away from her when people found out. Now they are back in each others lives and what Prince Baylin sees as helping and honoring his childhood friend, Luana sees as a slap to the face, being used as a brood mare just a step above a common whore. Can they get back that bond they once had and have a chance at love? Or will tradition, family and continuing problems in the kingdom hold them back? This novella is a quick read at 63 pages and it's very different from anything I have read before, it's a fantasy historical romance the first few pages give you a set up for the world and while the author does a good job of painting a life like picture I was little meh about that part. Not the authors fault I know it was needed to set up the world it was my own mood at the time, after the first few pages things really take off and I loved it, we get to see flashbacks of Prince Baylin and Luana childhood friendship and how close they were. I liked Luana she was a strong woman who had a hard life yet she persevered doing everything she could in order to make the situation better for her family, she doesn't feel like other girls do that being a bed wife is an honor and I loved that about her. I loved how she didn't compromise her morals just because everyone else thought she should, she stays strong and while she knows this can cause her problems she still does it. I love the confused Prince Baylin, poor guy really was just trying to do what he thought was the right thing because of the way he was raised I understand why he would be confused by Luana. Yes, this is a novella, but you can see a lot of emotional changes and growth in Baylin in the short pages of this story. When this story ended my first thought was "you have got to be kidding me" and "I hate you a little bit right now Suzanna" but now that I am over my cliffhanger induced pouting I think that the ending was done well, it definitely left me anxious for the characters and wanting the next book. The Bed Wife was a great start to a new series and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the books.

At first glance, this reads as a mid-evil/historical fiction. However there is also a slight fantasy twist that brings a whole new element to the plot. We start off getting to know the land and the kingdom of Wintervale with great descriptions of the castle and the kingdom as a whole. The world set up is very well done and it is easy to visualize this terrain as Ms. Lynn took her time in illustrating the layout.
Luana is our female main character and is portrayed as a strong willed, self-sufficient young woman. Her family is well known not only for the goats that they heard but also for her father’s drunken ways.
Prince Baylin, our male lead, is a depicted as a kind hearted man who puts his kingdom before himself. His title as next in line for the throne does not seem to weigh down this character’s charm and his personality makes him easy to swoon over. It would be easy for him to come off as an arrogant ass however he is just the opposite.
Throughout the first few chapters, we are given glimpses into the past and how Luana and Baylin first met as children. The connection and bond that they shared was strong, however frowned upon by the castle. Years pass before Luana and Baylin meet up again and even though they each remember the friendship that they had as children, there is a definite riff between the two. As time goes on and certain things are put forth, they are once again forced together under some unusual circumstances.
Communication does not seem to play well into their involuntary relationship, however being forced to spend time with one another does make old feelings resurface and also creates new emotions.
We are given a few supporting characters that are both good and bad. They each play a very important role in both Luana and Baylin’s life as a couple and as individuals.
The plot is new and refreshing, especially amongst the trend of billionaires and BDSM reads. It is easy to get lost within these pages and I found myself truly enraptured with this story that holds a slight modern twist on the typical fairytale. And even though this is a quick read, we are not left with little to hold on to. There is more than enough action and mystery to keep you on the edge and wanting more.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Recommended for mature readers 18+ due to sexual content. I enjoyed this adult romance!
The cover had me fooled at first. I thought I was going to be reading a paranormal romance. Instead it was like reading a cross between historical and fantasy romance novels. “The Bed Wife” gave me another book boyfriend in Baylin, heir to the throne. He’s strong with raw masculinity and handsome too. The man was totally enamored of Luana years before she became a bed wife. I loved Luana. She is a perfect heroine for the time period. She’s no shrinking violet waiting for someone to tell her what to do. The girl has spunk and personality.
The love story between Luana and Baylin was a difficult one which stood up against every test given it. Lynn’s worldbuilding in “The Bed Wife” was wonderful. I had no problem imagining the village and the castle. The sexual scenes were minimal and were just enough to paint the scene.
The Bed Wife is an amazing read that you need to not only put on your TBR list but bump it to the top. It has friendship, love, danger, intrigue and romance rolled up into one beautiful package. I won’t give any spoilers because I want you to read the book for yourself but I will say this the Bed Wife has an amazing story that will touch your heart that will keep you on the edge of your seats. I was truly sadden when I finished because I wanted the story to continue and I am willing to bet you will feel the same way. Get your copy TODAY! Just tell the hubby to take the kids out for pizza because you will not want any interruptions. Trust me!
I don’t have much to say about this book. It wasn’t anything extraordinary; I didn’t like the main topic of the story, that was about a legend from which the society of the book ruled themselves – something like a nobleman can chose any woman that is not a noblewoman, after a certain age, to be their “bed wifes”, besides having their legal wifes.
We have the typical prince who falls in love in the poor girl who lives in his village, but he cannot marry her, so he decides to have her as his bed wife. But he ends up not having sex with her because he is to noble for it, he respects her too much and wants to give her a better life at the palace – even though both of them are mocked for not having sex. In the end of the book, they do have sex, but all this story lacks of substance, of a real point.
The writing itself is not bad, the book is actually quite fluid and it could have been a sweet story, as I suspect the author is going to try to improve for the next book (am I the only one who is absolutely sure that the prince is going to marry her and they’ll end up as the king and queen of the kingdom?).
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against this kind of story, I actually enjoy quite allot reading this romances but need to be a bit more profound and developed. Besides, I didn’t like its perspective on women.
However, I can’t say it’s a “bad book”, so I won’t give less than two stars.
This book was like a fairy-tale. Luana and Baylin were a very unique couple. They met as children but there are a lot of things separating them. All the secondary characters really added to the story and even though the book was on the short side, it felt whole. Great, quick read. Do not miss it.
ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.
Luana was a simple commoner, daughter of a drunken goat herder.
Baylin a Prince of Gasmere, future heir to the kingdoom.
When Prince Baylin was ten years old, he was wondering around the kingdom near Luana's family farm when he injured himself falling from a tree. Luana came to his resuce and they became instant friends. They spend the summer playing together until Lord Cadman, Baylin's uncle found him with Luana and put a stop to it. They didn't see one another again until they were adults.
Now it was time for the harvest moon celebration. This celebration was no ordinary one. As tradition, every century on the anniversary of a great battle that nearly eradicated the royal bloodline, the royal men would select a bed wife. A bed wife would be chosen among the commoners to provide male heirs for the royal family. They would not be taken as wives. Their job was simply to produce children. It was a honor to be chosen as the family would be greatly compensated. Luana did not see it that way.
This year 10 young ladies would be chosen and to Luana's horror, she was one of them. She had been selected for Prince Baylin. Each wondered if the other had remembered their brief tryst as children. Luana, strong willed and defiant, was quick to let Prince Baylin know that she did not feel honored to be selected for such a deed as a bed wife. Prince Baylin was shocked that she didn't see it as an honor and was hurt by her open defiance. Can these two rekindle the lost friendship they had or will they be lost to pain and duty?
This story was a short one, but very good. I cannot wait to read the remaining stories as they come out. The author definitely peaks your interest in what the future will hold for these two. She kept me on the edge of my seat!
The Bed Wife The Bed Wife is not just your typical romance. It has intrigue and action that when combined with Baylin and Luana's relationship really offers the reader so much more than the typical romance story. At the start you see Luana go through the process of becoming a Bed Wife but it's the process of Baylin remembering his history with Luana and making the effort to show Luana that he remembers and that his love is genuine and goes beyond the tradition of taking a bed wife. The story has so many layers that I think it really keeps the action fresh. You have the bed wife tradition which no causes conflicts with Luana and Baylin because as much as he loves her doesn't feel he can go against his father's wishes even if he doesn't agree with the bed wife tradition. This complication on top of the deceit he feels from his uncle and the war with the trolls that moves the action outside of the castle and takes Baylin away from Luana really keeps the reader engaged with the story. I won't give any spoilers but I will say that if you want a fiery romance, intrigue, a great vilian, and romance that has to overcome impossible odds then this is the story for you! Book 2, The Heir is already out and this is a great time to start this series. I can't wait for book 3 The Heir to come out!
It's amazing that this is Author Suzanne Lynn's debut book. I have reviewed a lot of books but once I started this book I couldn't put it down. The story will draw you in from page one!
I was given this book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.

CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
This book is very good! It takes you back in history to the time of great kingdoms and alliances with elves and other folk. The problem is the invasions by trolls who are bent on damage to the land and villages and the death and destruction of the people.
Prince Baylin develops a friendship with a young girl, Luana, who tends the goat herd of her family. Even tho this is frowned upon, the young prince finds ways to continue their friendship.
As a young man, the prince attempts to rekindle their friendship. Then comes the once in a century anniversary of the Battle of Embers at which time, men of royal lineage take a bed wife. They have selected a pretty maiden from the villages to bed on that night. The goal is for the bed wife to produce an heir for the noble. Their families are handsomely rewarded for their daughter being selected. Prince Baylin has selected Luana. To his dismay, she finds this custom barbaric and doesn't want to be selected.
I could feel the dismay of both Baylin and Luana when the situation becomes torment for them both. I just wanted to encourage them to tell each other that they were in love. I wanted to rid them of the callous uncle of Baylin who relished in causing pain to those who were in his way to becoming King. After all, he was the king's younger brother and he should be the next in line for the throne according to him. He just needed to be rid of the true heirs.
I was very wrapped up in this story. Great job, Suzanne! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
Suzanna Lynn created a beautiful love story in The Bed Wife. When I first heard about this book I was excited to read it. I love fantasy books and to top it off this one is a fantasy romance. Once I started reading The Bed Wife I couldn’t put it down. It was a magical read that keep my attention the whole time.
You have prince Baylin who was wonderfully written. You can see the struggles he goes through to make sure Luana is happy in the castle. You can also feel the love that he has for Luana. He has a duty to his kingdom to protect it and also to bed Luana and produce a son. He is a man any woman could wish for. He is caring and wants to love Luana but being the prince puts up a road block on their love. The prince can only marry a Princess and Luana is not a princess.
Luana was also a very strong character. She did not want to be a part of the bed wife tradition. She wanted to stay at home and help her family. She knows there is no real love in being a Bed Wife. Once the men get marry, the bed wives are put aside and they are also not allowed to see their children. She didn’t want this life. Once she was picked and realized who picked her she guarded her heart. Towards the end you could feel the true love she has for Baylin.
I truly loved this story. It has every in it, romance, fighting, evil uncles, Trolls and so much more. I would recommend it to anyone who loves historical romance, fantasy romance. It kind of had a Lord of the Rings feel to it. I love that part of it because I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan. Seriously pick it up and read it.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy through the free giveaway. Once I received the book I was fairly surprised that the book was so short. But once I read the first chapter I was hooked and wanted to read more.
I liked the medieval touch of the story as well as the main characters Baylin and Luana. It's a nice love story which has its monsters and battles, not to mention the stereotyped bad guy who wants to ruin the chances for the two lovers. And although it might seem as a typical love story where the main characters are destined to be together through a struggle and you can almost guess when the bad guy is going to come rushing in to ruin everything, it is well written and you don't really want to put the book down before you reach the very end.
That said, as the book really was short, it gave me a feeling that it ended too soon and abrupt. It seems you need to read all the books in the series to get a handle on the full story as it's not one of those series where you read the first book and already get some closure in the end of it.
The Bed Wife Chronicles had a good start with this first book and the second book is definitely worth a read just to know what happens next.
Reviewed on behalf of 2 girls who love books blog The bed wife by Suzanna Lynn This story is set in the olden days and it is a fabulous read. When a young prince has an accident as a child he is found by a girl of pure beauty and the young prince becomes infatuated with her until the wicked uncle puts a stop to the friendship. For years after neither can forget the other until one fateful day they bump into each other and Luana steals the prince Baylins heart all over again but as is custom to the kingdom a marriage will never be allowed and so prince Baylin takes Luana for his bed wife. All is not how it seems it. The prince Baylins uncle is a jealous man who wants the throne for himself and believes it is his given right but just how far will he go to get what he wants. Your emotions run high through this story and there are quite a few of them to go through. This is part 1 of a beautiful love story it isn’t to seedy or racy and is of a fantastic length. It is descriptive in all parts of the story and flows beautifully. The characters are fabulous and the story has an amazing mix of good guys and bad guys. I will be following up on the next part of the story and cannot wait to do so. I rate this story 5 stars
Well, obviously since I wrote the book I'm going to give it a five-star rating! Personally, I wish Goodreads didn't give the author the option to rate their own book, but since it's already out there, I might as well take advantage of it.
The Bed Wife is a fantasy romance novella that will be followed by two full length novels as part of The Bed Wife Chronicles. I wouldn't call it a teaser or a prequel, but I would definitely say it is what will get hooked and begging for novels 2 and 3 to come out.
Though it is classified as a fantasy romance, there is much more to the story than just the tale of two people falling in love. There are wonderful plot sequences that involve trolls, villains and even battles.
However, that is the only taste of this book I am going to give you. Since it's a novella, it is a short enough read to help you make up your mind on whether you want to dive into books two and three when they are released.
I was given a complimentary copy of the book early in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not one to read a lot of fantasy books, but after starting The Bed Wife, I couldn't put it down. I haven't read anything this gripping in a long time. I couldn't put it down. Thank goodness dinner was a leftover night.
The book keeps your attention from page one till the very end where it leaves you with a bit of a cliffhanger, and makes you anticipate the second book that much more. I love the books that have a very good description of surroundings, and characters, making it easy to picture it in your head what you're reading. This book accomplishes that very well, giving very vivid descriptions and introductions to the times and people. The intimate scene in the book is very tastefully written, and really pulls you into the moment.
I cannot wait for the second book in the series. Highly recommend this book to everyone, fantasy lovers and not.

I’m not one that will normally read a romance that isn’t set in current/present times. I would just have a difficult time getting into the story. However, The Bed Wife Chronicles intrigued me and I thought it was time to step out of my comfort zone.
As soon as I started reading, I was involved in the story. Suzanna grabbed me with her descriptions of the land, of the people and even the décor of the castle. Although this is a novella and a quick read, a lot was packed into this little package!
I already have my favorite characters and one that I detest. Pretty sure your skin will crawl when you meet him, just like mine did. I am looking forward to reading more in this series and I don’t say that often when it comes to books set in the past! I have become invested in Baylin and Luana and I know it isn’t going to be an easy road for them. Thank you Suzanna Lynn!
I loved this book! It was way different from all my other reads! It was like reading a fairytale, a beautiful, well written and descriptive fairytale. Like all fairytales there are the good guys and the villains and this villain is creepy!! This story has everything lost love, first love, pain and evilness. In other words this novella held my attention and it was short enough to read in one sitting. Loved the mix of historical romance and fantasy, with flashbacks to their past when the we're children. Even though it's the true and tried formula of the rich guy and the poor girl, it totally works because of the obstacles and situations they have to overcome. I was actually disappointed when it finished because I became invested in these characters,... loved Prince Baylin and Lunna and hope to read more about them.
I usually don't read historical romances. However, the author was so interesting and passionate when talking about the story, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I told myself I'd read ten pages and then decide if I wanted to continue. When I remembered that while reading, I looked down, and I was already 26% through the story and completely engrossed!
I don't know if the ideas are historically accurate, but this book was written well enough that I didn't care. I could believe the story and imagine what was happening while reading. I loved the characters and felt their emotions throughout the story. It was a quick one-sitting read for me.
I will say it is a cliffhanger, as it is part of a series. Even though it isn't my typical genre and it's a cliffhanger (which I hate), I'll still be back for book 2. I'll definitely continue this series!!!
The Bed Wife I was overjoyed by the way Suzanna Lynn open up my mine to the kingdom of Wintervale. The descriptions of the castle and the layout of the land. Luana's character took my breath away. She is everything and more and dealing with a father with a drinking problem did not help things. Prince Baylin is everything a woman wants and more, strong and caring in one. This story give you a glimpse into Luana and Baylin past as children and how far they first met. This story is worth the read and one you can get lose in. I would call it a twisted fairy tale. It's one you can dream by the stars on ****
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review****
First off, novellas are generally quite difficult to rate and review, but I really enjoyed this. It is set in a sort of medieval period and location (both fictional and never specified exactly when or where), so I was a bit reluctant to read it, thinking it would be too complicated to wrap my head around, but it wasn't. It's a great story--especially for a debut book, and you'll definitely be on the lookout for the next two (I think there will be two) installments. The story itself is part historical, part fantasy, and part romance. I've read similar "bed wife" themes in sci-fi/speculative fiction and dystopian books, but never in this type of setting, so it took me into another world and genre, which was nice. :)
What a story!! It is set back in time when things were very different from now. When men were in charge and women did as they were told.
Luana is the daughter of a goat farmer. Her father is a drunk so it is up to her to keep her family farm going.
Baylin is the future king. It's his birthright to choose a bed wife, someone to give him an heir, before he chooses a wife of royal blood. His choice is Luana.
But what happens when she refuses him? And why is someone so hell bent on killing him when he is such a personable and friendly prince?? More importantly what will happen now that Luana and Baylin are in love when the law states that he must marry a princess??
Only 2 of these questions will be answered in this amazing book and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
EEEKK!! I love this book! The Bed Wife is the first book of The Bed Wife Chronicles. From the start up to the last, I was addicted to this book. Anyway, the story and the characters of this book are amazing. The characters, Baylin, a prince who is looked up to and respected by his kingdom. He’s an amazing prince, a gentleman and will do anything for his kingdom. Luana, a woman who captured Prince Baylin’s attention. Both were childhood friends but with the circumstance, they were distanced with each other. When they cross paths again, things get more exciting! With the tradition, the royals will choose a bed wife. With this their friendship and trust will be tested. Ms. Suzanna nailed it! Love this!
Book#1-The Bed Wife was a really good read. reading about friends since childhood that fall in love and then seperate only to be brought back together has a soft spot in my heart, ass in the danger and intrigue and you have all the elements that make you do the more chapter rant. Goes to show that a book with very little to no sex can still be a good read. Book#2-The Heir is book 2 and we find out more about Luana. I was loving the fact that their were elves in this story. Luana was a strong female character that I love reading about. Book#3-The Queen picks up with Baylin and Luana dealing with so much trouble but see that their love for each other is still good and strong. And the ending was just perfect.
I was given a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest opinion.
I love action/fantasy stories. This story fits that to a T. The right amount of action with enough storytelling to keep you hooked. This is a romance but it is realistic. The romance is built up instead of these 'love at first sight' plots that are in so many books these days. Since it's a novella, it is a shorter read, and it ends in a nice cliffhanger. But since I know there are more books to come, I'm anxiously waiting to see what happens. I would recommend this book to both men and women who like fantasy and romance.
This was the first time-period romantic fantasy that I have read, and let me say I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed reading about a different time and place, with different customs and such. Suzanna was very descriptive which always helps paint a good image in your head. The character's were relate-able. And the story- line kept me interested. I am looking forward to seeing more from this author.. My only disappointment.. the length, but that is just me. I can't help it I liked the story, and wanted more.. I always want more. If you are looking for something a little different, something shorter, or need a great beach read I would definitely recommend this.
When I started reading The Bed Wife, by Suzanna Lynn, I had no idea what a bed wife was. When I finished a short 2 hours later--I could NOT put it down--I knew what one was AND what one wasn't! Every word and phrase of this magical world of Kings, Princes, Trolls, Queens and common folk took me even deeper into this mysterious, nail biter of a story. I just cannot wait to read the 2nd book of the Trilogy, The Heir. I must say that this author has placed herself with the likes of Nora Roberts in the way she weaves her reader right into the story! If you like this type of book, you will be begging for more!
Bed Wife was not a genre I have never read... When I first started reading I am not going to lie, I was like uh-oh! But past the first page I was hooked. The relationship build up with references to the past with Luana and Baylin was pure gold! I felt myself reading and reading and not wanting to put it down- the story flowed and kept me interested and I can say I am a true fan. I got frustrated, happy, terrified and fell in love while I lost myself in the story... And as a reader I can't ask any more!
It's a short read (novella), but I felt is was long enough to get you gripped and wanting the next book.
I don't want to give anything away with it only being a short read.
It's set in the olden days and has some swoon worthy romance with a little fantasy added ,,, a great mix.. it has just enough suspense to keep you reading and wanting more.
This is the first book in this genre I have ever read and did not disappoint .
