She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.
Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.

She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.

6/2020 still very readable and Roan is one truly a nice patient soul, without being a saint though, which is important. Got western grit to it. Their love for horses really comes through in this tale, very horse centric.
5/2010 heartfelt, different story line for romance since deals with travel and adventure, great descriptions of woman awakening her sensuality, struggling between independence and belonging, will make a good re-read in a few years

This took me weeks to read even though the book is thin. I found it hard to get into the book because of the characters. I liked Roan and Katherine, but I didn't find them compelling.
The romance was okay, nothing spectacular.

Originally read 3/12/16 and gave it a 5 star. Reread 9/17/23 and gave it 4 stars!!!

Katherine Cassidy and Roan Devereaux are the main characters. Roan and Katherine’s father served in the Civil War together and Cassidy saved Roan by taking him to a hospital to be repaired instead of letting a war surgeon work on him.
Roan wants to buy a horse from Cassidy; he is on his way home to Louisiana after a long absence. Roan is worried about the reception his parents will offer. When he gets to Cassidy’s ranch, he finds that his friend is dead and his daughter Katherine is underwhelmed by Roan’s arrival.
From the run-down appearance of the ranch, Roan realizes Katherine could use some help and so he stays for an extended time.
Essentially, my only complaint is that this plot set up has been used many times before; the only change is that Roan takes Katherine home with him. I found the story to be rather uninspired.
