Rate this book
She doesn’t remember me.
But I remember exactly how she sounds when she says my name.

And I’m going to hear it again.

Ophelia Marin thinks something is wrong with her.

Flowers bloom when she bleeds.
Power hums beneath her skin.
And every time I get too close—she reacts.

Breath hitching.
Pulse racing.
Like her body knows what her mind doesn’t.

Like it remembers the things I’ve done to her.

I am Hades, King of the Underworld.
And I have spent two thousand years craving a woman who no longer remembers she’s mine.

I made a deal with the Fates to keep her alive.
I paid the price without hesitation.

Now they’re ready to collect.

The cult hunting her is closing in.
Her power is awakening.
And every second I’m near her is a test of control I’m close to failing.

Because she looks at me like I’m a stranger.

But touches me like I’m not.

She doesn’t remember the way she used to give in to me.
The way she used to choose me.

The way she used to beg.

But she will.

And when she does—

I won’t stop at reclaiming what was mine.

I’ll make sure she never questions it again.

Let the gods come for her.
Let fate try to take her from me.

I’ll ruin anyone who touches her.

Because I didn’t wait two thousand years to be denied.

And this time—

I’m not letting her go.

Wow…I really liked the book. In Greek Mythology Hades and Persephone’s story is one of my favorite and this modern retelling is a good one, I think. Also, I liked the author’s pen too. Can’t wait to read second book of the series. If you love reading mythology with modern world adaptation, you will love this book.

Thanks to Kennedy Slope and Love Notes PR for the arc.

I love all things Greek Mythology. I soak that ish up. Hades and Persephone are hands down my favorite couple. I’ve read so many variations of their story and will continue to—I’ll never tire of it. I mean, how many ways can you deliver a Hades and Persephone story and not get bored? Author Kennedy Slope does a fantastic job with Hades: King of Longing, in which the FMC, whose mortal name is Ophelia, believes she has a Mental Illness. She has no idea who she truly is or that a cult is after her because they are truly obsessed with a bunch of prophecies that are centered on and involve her. And there’s Hades.

I couldn’t get enough of Hades. You know that Netflix show, Lucifer? I always wanted more of that—the vibe. This book has it for me, but more on the romance side. He knows who she is, Persephone, his wife. But she has no memories of him.

I loved all the characters, the suspense, and the different take on the Greek myths. I had a great time reading this and discovering a new-to-me author as well. I look forward to more of this series.

Thank you to @lovenotes.pr and @kennedyslope for the #gifted e-copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was lucky enough to be an arc reader for this book thanks to LovesNotesPR with approval from author, Kennedy Slope.

Was absolutely hyped to read this as I love reading mythology inspired stories. This take on Hades and Persephone is one of my favorites.

Our FMC, Ophelia, is being hunted by cultists and having visions, which causes her to believe she has a mental illness. Turns out she has Persephone's essence inside her, and Demeter's essence holder is hunting her so that Demeter can be restored completely after multiple gods and goddesses faded out.

Ophelia finds herself within Hades's environment. She doesn't know him at all, but alas he knows her. He knows she is Persephone from the get go and keeps trying to make her remeber.

There's lots of yearning on behalf of Hades, and there is a slow burn as Ophelia begins to realize she does have feelings. There's also a couple interesting intense scenes.

We've got most of the gods as players: Hades, Zeus, and Hermes. Definitely give this a read for a unique take!

Can't wait to see what else is going to happen in this series.

Ophelia’s life hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses… ironic, considering she owns a flower shop. Barely scraping by, with no family and no real support system, her world is a lonely one—until it somehow gets even worse.

Closing up shop one night, she’s attacked, abducted, and thrown into the boot of a car. And just when you think things can’t possibly escalate further… they do.

Meanwhile, Hades—God of the Underworld and a big deal on the Vegas strip—has spent centuries searching for his lost wife, Persephone. Desperate, he turns to Zeus for help. But there’s a catch: Persephone will be found… with no memory of who she is, or the love she once shared with Hades.

As Ophelia and Hades’ paths collide, they’re forced to rebuild a love she no longer remembers, all while staying one step ahead of a dangerous cult determined to use her to bring her mother back.

This was a fun, fast-paced read with a modern twist on the classic Persephone and Hades myth. I really enjoyed Kennedy’s take on how the gods and goddesses exist in the contemporary world—it felt fresh and entertaining.

I flew through this in a day and had a great time with it. That said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth to the characters, as I struggled at times to fully connect and invest in them.

Overall, an addictive, easy read with a unique spin on a well-loved myth—perfect if you’re after something quick, dramatic, and full of divine chaos

First of all, I was lucky enough to be chosen to read this book in advance and eternally grateful for it because I could not put this book down at all! This is my first time reading a book by Kennedy Slope and the moment I started to read the first paragraph of this book, I was instantly hooked!! I knew that I would be intrigued with this book due to reading its blurb and knowing that it’s a retelling of Hades and Persephone, one of my all time favorite couples in Greek mythology. I am always a fan of an author who can write a retelling of a Greek myth, and Kennedy seriously knocked it out of the park with her style of writing!! This has become one of my ultimate favorite retellings of this myth, and I have read a lot of similar retellings, but this one is literally the best of the best!! 🙂‍↕️

This is the story of Ophelia, who owns a cute flower shop in Vegas, leading a normal life, dealing with the loss of her father. One night, while she was closing up her shop, she ends up being kidnapped by an older woman and her two bodyguards. Despite trying her best to fight them off, she wakes up when the car starts to be struggled with. She ends up falling out of the trunk of the car and is rescued by a handsome man in the shadows.

Hades has waited for over a millenia for Persephone to come back to him after that horrible night. After making a deal with The Fates, he has been patiently waiting for her to come back to him. Or so he thought, until he realizes she is being kidnapped by the culturists, eager to unfold their plan. Without a doubt in the world, he rescues her before she is lost and gone forever, taking her back to his sanctuary, his apartment. When she wakes up, he knows that Persephone is back, feels that her soul is inside Ophelia and tries his best to explain that without scaring her too much, or so he thinks 🤭

Ophelia has heard vaguely of the tale of Hades and Persephone, and when the man who rescued her introduces himself as Hades, God of the Underworld, she thinks she has finally lost it. And that being concussed is the reason why she is imagining things or it's a psychotic break, anything logical that can explain away what Hades is saying. Without spoiling too much because I highly recommend reading this book, it’s full of twists and turns!! The emotional rollercoaster that you go through with Hades and wanting the love of his life to recover her memories and love him like he does; as well as Ophelia, who is struggling with her identity and coming to terms that everything that Hades has told her about her past and powers are all true is just pure chef’s kiss! I could not put this book down at all! However, there are some trigger warnings at the beginning of the book due to some sensitive topics that are talked about and explored. If you are comfortable enough to read it, then yes I highly recommend it because Kennedy truly did a fantastic job exploring these topics. I seriously cannot wait for the next book in the series and see what happens after that cliffhanger 🤭🙂‍↕️

I received an ARC courtesy of Love Notes PR

There is something endlessly seductive about returning to myth, especially one as bruised and beloved as Hades and Persephone. Hades: King of Longing understands this pull well. It reaches for that ancient ache - the daughter divided, the lover waiting, and the gravity of longing that outlives lifetimes.

What struck me most was the emotional architecture: Persephone caught between inheritance and desire, between the quiet tyranny of her mother and the consuming devotion of Hades. It evokes that familiar mythic tension, the inevitability of choosing who you are allowed to become. For readers who loved Lore Olympus, there is a similar pleasure here in watching a heroine hover between worlds, not quite belonging to either.

However, I couldn’t help but feel the story brushing against its own potential rather than fully inhabiting it.

This is a book built on yearning. The romance burns with a kind of patient hunger, and when it gives in to heat, it does so with confidence. The sensuality is not the issue; if anything, it’s one of the novel’s strengths. But longing, to truly devastate, needs space. Here, it sometimes moves too quickly.

I found myself wanting more interiority from the heroine, a deeper descent into herself. Not just the recognition that she is “two sides of one coin,” but the slow, painful unfolding of what that actually costs her. A true heroine’s journey requires rupture: a breaking apart before a becoming. That transformation felt present in concept, but not always in experience.

Similarly, the world-building gestures toward something grander than what we’re given. The fading of the gods, the weight of prophecy, the sense of a world half-remembered and half-lost. A few more glimpses into the past, more mythic residue, more history bleeding into the present, would have deepened the emotional stakes. I wanted to FEEL the loss of the divine, not just understand it.

At times, the pacing works against the story’s own ambitions. There are moments, particularly in the emotional push and pull between characters, where a slower burn, more introspection, and clearer development (especially in training and power progression) would have transformed tension into something almost unbearable in the best way.

The bones of this story are GOOOOD. With more room to breathe, this could stand alongside some of the more defining romantasy works in the genre.

Because at its heart, this is a story about longing, not just romantic longing, but existential longing. The desire to be seen fully. To choose oneself and reconcile the person you were made to be with the one you ache to become.

First Impressions: A Vegas Strip florist finds herself wrapped up in a titanic-scale battle for her identity and life. She collides with an ancient cult and Hades, (the King of the Underworld) now a modern casino tycoon.

Pacing: This takes place over 12 weeks or so, and while the series of events are frantic, they feel natural within the time frame of the story. The "breather" in the third act does a great job grounding the fast-paced story.

Character development: What an awesome cast of characters! Not only did the author take on the huge task of connecting well-known mythological personas to modern identities, but she does so in a way that feels genuine and authentic. Our MCs, Hades (MMC) and Ophelia/Persephone (FMC) are fully realized as interesting but flawed people, but they are accompanied by a cast of other deities who are also wonderfully unique. I also love the characterization of Hecate as a pragmatic, mysterious woman rather than as a flatly evil character as in other modern renditions of Greek fables.

World Building: Honestly, the descriptions of the locations might be weakest part of the book. There are many descriptions of opulence and finery, but somehow too vague and disconnected to the modern world. It wouldn't be so noticeable if the author hadn't created such a wonderfully well-developed cast of characters.

Romance: The romance is slow but patient. That being said, Hades misses several opportunities to perform a truly grand gesture for Ophelia; he's very concerned with reconnecting with the ghost of his dead wife rather than make Ophelia feelsl seen and secure in her life. However, Ophelia comes through with the grandest of gestures at the end of the second act, and solidifies the romantic bond.

Spice: This is a slow burn and there is a lot of yearning on behalf of both MCs. There is one notably steamy scene, but otherwise the romance supercedes the spice. I wouldn't pick this up if you're looking for a naughty romp, but the story is great and totally worth the investment.

Errors and Consistency: This was a clean draft and the author's voice is consistent throughout.

Overall experience: What can I say? I LOVED IT! Lots of action, tons of cool lore, all the characters are interesting and well-developed, and the yearning and angst have a satisfying conclusion. I'm super excited for Book 2.

Greek mythology, especially Hades and Persephone retellings, is my kryptonite and I’ve read quite a few, so I was really curious and excited to see this author’s take on their story.

The premise is genuinely interesting. The idea of god's souls reincarnated into human bodies adds a fresh twist, and I really liked the concept of what fuels the gods’ powers and how that explains why not all of them exist in the modern world.

The pacing is fast right from the start. A lot happens in the first few chapters, and the story kicks off quickly. It didn’t throw me off, but it was noticeable.

One thing the author did really well was capturing the relationship struggle and the FMC’s identity crisis. Her struggle with her new role, her surroundings, and especially her complicated relationship felt very real. In the beginning, I did question how their relationship would develop in a convincing way. And to be clear, this is a big part of the plot. Feeling this way in the beginning and then following the characters through their ups and downs, while still finding it believable, is really a testament to the author’s skill.

Personally, the story feels a bit surface-level. It is fast-paced but not very deep, which made it hard for me to fully connect emotionally. For example, early on the FMC is faced with a scene that should raise the tension, but it resolves too quickly for my liking. Moments that should have had emotional weight felt rushed. It is a fast-paced book, though, so it’s just a personal preference.

Another small thing that threw me off is that we are told multiple times that the FMC makes terrible jokes and puns, but we never actually see it. Based on her background and personality, it didn’t feel like it matched her character, so it pulled me out of the story a bit.
Even though it didn’t fully pull me in emotionally, I still enjoyed it. It is a good, entertaining read, and I am definitely curious about where the story goes next.

I would recommend this to readers who enjoy Greek mythology retellings, especially Hades and Persephone, and are looking for a modern, fast-paced interpretation with a unique twist on how gods exist in today’s world.

Book: Hades: King of Longing
Author: Kennedy Slopes
My Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Spice Level: 4/5 🌶️
Genre: Mythology Retelling / Romance
Release date: April 2nd, 2026

Tropes:
- One sided hate to lovers
- Morally grey MMC
- Hades x Persephone retelling
- Fated mates
- Prophecy

My thoughts:
What the actual flip was that. This book was like so unexpectingly good (ik i say this in every reveal BUT THIS TIME IT'S REALLY TRUE) This was my first mythology retelling kinda book and I absolutely devoured this one (in two days)... I so so so recommend this book—even if you have never tried mythology retelling kind of books (I also learnt quite a bit about greek gods from this book)

Blurb:
She doesn't remember me. But I've waited two thousand years to have her back.
Ophelia Marin thinks the spring magic in her blood is mental illness. The flowers that bloom when she bleeds.
The way plants grow at her touch. She's spent her whole life hiding, ashamed of the power her father taught her to fear.
She has no idea what she really is.
She doesn't know her mother tried to murder her to keep her "pure." She doesn't know a fanatical cult has been hunting her since birth. She doesn't know about the prophecy that makes her a target for gods and zealots alike.
And she doesn't know that the man watching from the shadows has loved her across lifetimes.
I am Hades. King of the Underworld. God of Death. Ruler of Las Vegas's darkest empire.
I made a bargain with the Fates to save her life. I traded everything for her survival, never asking the cost.
Now that debt is coming due.
When she needs you most, you will lose what you love most.
The cult is closing in. Her powers are awakening. And I'm the only thing standing between her and those who would use her to resurrect the old gods.
The Fates warned me: Loving her might be what kills her.
I'll do it anyway.
Because death bows to no one.
Except her.

Title: Hades: King of Longing (Book 1)
Series: Gods of Obsidian
Author: Kennedy Slope
Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance
Release Date: April 1, 2026
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3/5)

Tropes & Themes:
⚡ Hades x Persephone Retelling
⚡ Fated Mates with a reincarnation twist
⚡ Morally Grey Love Interest
⚡ Obsession, longing, and devotion
⚡ Hidden powers and self-discovery
⚡ Touch her and die energy

Review:
Okay… I just finished Hades: King of Longing and the fact that I stayed up all night and read it in one go should tell you everything you need to know 👀🔥 It starts off with a slower, slightly mysterious build-up, but once the story leans into its darker romance side, the tone shifts in a way that really pulls you in.

Somewhere along the way, I got really attached to both Hades and Ophelia/Persephone. Their dynamic takes time to fully make sense, but once it does, it really hits. The emotional pull builds quietly, and before you realise it, you’re fully invested in them and whatever is going to happen next.

I also really liked how the mythology-inspired elements were blended into a modern setting. It never feels overwhelming, but it adds that extra layer of fate and inevitability that keeps things interesting. There’s always this feeling that something bigger is coming, and it kept me hooked the entire time.

The ending gave just enough resolution while still leaving me wanting more.

Trigger Warnings:
⚠️ Violence , kidnapping and captivity
⚠️ Psychological distress and panic
⚠️ Grief, parental loss and childhood trauma
⚠️ Dark romance elements throughout and power imbalance

Would I recommend it?
Yes, especially if you enjoy darker, emotionally intense romances with a mythological edge. Just go in expecting that shift and let yourself ease into the intensity 🖤

Thank you to the author @kennedyslope and @lovenote.pr for the ARC 💌

Hades:King of Longing 🌌
Firstly,I want to thank LoveNotes PR & Kennedy Slope for trusting me with AMAZING ARC!❤️

This is one of the times, that I had been so in love with the book, that not only did I read it in one sitting but I was like I NEED someone to discuss it with. However since I am not able right now,I will have to be contained in this review.🙊
To start with,Dark Romance is not my NO1 genre out there, yet this time not only did I absolutely adored the book, but I will be first in line for book 2 too.Slope, created a beautiful yearning romance that literally lasted CENTURIES.What I particularly liked,is that with this specific retelling many things can ,obviously,go wrong since Per is reincarnated and a new person gets in the equation.Although, this time things were beyond perfect. Our girl not only gave consent in everything but also fell HARDER that the King of the dead himself, leading them in a heart warming love story that you won't be able to put down.
Getting into our couple, they were both really unique and complex characters.Specifically,Ophelia who had her whole world and everything she ever believed gotten upside down (just imagine the POV of that girl 💀-specifically in the first 10%-).On the other side, Hades has been preparing for centuries for that particular moment,so his feelings are to be expected.✨
Continuing,I loved the turn that this book too with the cult & its leader (things are better than what you are currently imagine). That twist not only gave them more depth, but added so much needed action and made the ending so heart breaking due to everything that happened.
Long story short,if you want a Hades & Persephone retelling like no one you have read before, this is for sure the one for you

love notes ARC reader. ❤️

this was such a fun and refreshing take on the classic hades x persephone story—set in modern-day vegas, which immediately made it feel different from other retellings I’ve read.

the story follows ophelia, a struggling flower shop owner who’s had a rough life after fleeing her abusive mother and losing her father. things take a wild turn when she’s almost kidnapped, only to be taken instead by a man who claims to be hades. from there, everything spirals into gods, reincarnation, and a cult that’s clearly after her for a reason she doesn’t yet understand.

as someone who loves greek mythology retellings, I really appreciated the reincarnation twist. seeing persephone reborn in a completely different life—and as someone much tougher and more guarded—added a fresh layer to the fated lovers trope. she’s not soft or naive; she’s shaped by what she’s been through, and that made her feel more real.

the chemistry between ophelia and hades is immediate and intense, and their dynamic pulled me in right away. but what stood out most is that the story doesn’t rely only on romance. the plot itself is engaging, with strong world-building, political tension among the gods, and some unique changes to the traditional myths that made everything feel original.

and the cult storyline? that had me fully locked in.

I also liked how the book explored what the gods would be like trying to survive in the modern world, and it clearly sets up a larger, more complex series with multiple characters. there were a few moments that felt a bit rushed or could’ve used more detail, but overall it didn’t take away from how addictive the story was.

that ending definitely has me ready for book two. I’m already invested in where this series is going and will be keeping an eye out for more from kennedy slope.

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an advanced reader copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.

Hades: King
of Longing by Kennedy Slope completely pulled me in and did not let go. This was such a refreshing and compelling take on Greek mythology, especially in how it reimagines the gods existing in modern society. The idea that they must adapt in order to maintain their power and relevance in a world where worship has faded was incredibly well executed and added a unique layer to the story.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was the characterization. Each god and goddess felt distinct, purposeful, and shaped by both their history and their present circumstances. The dynamics between them created tension, intrigue, and at times, chaos in the best way.

Hades and Ophelia (Persephone) absolutely carried this story for me. Their connection is deeply rooted, intense, and filled with longing. Hades’ devotion and patience contrasted beautifully with Ophelia’s internal struggle and resistance, creating a push-and-pull dynamic that kept me completely invested. The emotional depth of their relationship made every interaction feel meaningful, and the tension between them was undeniable.

The romance was well balanced with the plot, and the spice was done perfectly—descriptive and impactful without being overwhelming or constant. When those moments happened, they hit.

Emotionally, this book definitely delivers. There is a strong sense of internal conflict, external pressures, and high-stakes moments that create a steady level of angst throughout the story. It keeps you engaged while still building toward a satisfying and well-earned resolution.

Overall, this was a beautifully written, emotionally engaging, and unique retelling that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves mythology, romance, and a bit of chaos along the way.

Hades: King of Longing by Kennedy Slope is a great book for fans of the paranormal, or anyone looking for a quick read to get them out of a reading slump. From the very beginning, you are thrown into the main plot of the story. Though it is a fast-paced book (I finished it in less than 48 hours) it by no means feels like the book was too short or the plot was rushed.
The story follows Ophelia, a seemingly normal florist living in Las Vegas, when she ends up in the hands of Hades, the god of the Underworld. Her whole world is turned upside-down when Hades tells her she is in fact his wife, Persephone, reincarnated, and she is being hunted by a cult of Demeter’s worshippers. Her memories from her previous life begin to slowly return, and she struggles to reconcile her previous life with her current one, the Persephone with the Ophelia. So while she tries to figure out how to access her powers, she is wrestling with an identity crisis, not quite knowing who she is anymore, which adds a level of emotion to the book that I really liked. In addition, there is this strange yet incredibly strong pull between her and Hades, adding a level of tension in the book and captivating the reader.
This book was enthralling from the moment I began the first chapter. I absolutely loved Ophelia’s character, her fierce independence and the way she develops throughout the book. And Hades, a god who has been waiting millennia for his wife to return, is quite the intense MMC. Overall, though there were some things I thought could be improved about the book, it was very compelling and I really enjoyed it. Hours would pass and I would barely notice.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

***ARC REVIEW***

Hades: King of Longing is a dark, addictive paranormal romance that leans heavily into fate, obsession, and power. The story follows Ophelia, a girl who believes her strange abilities are something to fear, only to discover she’s far more than human—and at the center of a dangerous prophecy. Watching from the shadows is Hades, a morally grey god who has waited centuries for her.

What really stands out is the intense, almost haunting connection between the characters. Hades isn’t your typical romantic lead—he’s possessive, powerful, and deeply obsessive, which makes the story feel darker and more emotionally charged than a standard romance. If you like anti-heroes who blur the line between love and control, this definitely delivers.

Ophelia’s journey is just as compelling. Her growth from fearful and unsure to someone starting to understand her power adds depth to the plot. The mystery surrounding her past, the cult hunting her, and the prophecy all keep the tension high and the story moving.

The romance is very much fated mates meets enemies-to-lovers, with a slow build of tension and longing. There’s a strong emotional pull rather than just instant attraction, which makes the relationship feel more layered.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (moderate)
It’s definitely steamy in places, but the focus is more on tension, obsession, and emotional intensity rather than constant explicit scenes.

Overall:
This is perfect if you love:

• Dark romance with morally grey gods
• Fated mates and reincarnation vibes
• Protective, obsessive love interests
• A mix of fantasy, danger, and romance

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
A gripping start to a series with strong chemistry, dark vibes, and just enough mystery to keep you hooked.

I love picking up any kind of retelling, and this one was absolutely worth it. The different approach gave the story a fresh feel while still holding onto the elements you expect.

At the beginning, Ophelia feels completely lost in her new reality. She resists everything, convinced it has to be a lie, even as part of her wants to believe what she’s being told. Watching her slowly shift from doubt into understanding, and then into strength, was such a rewarding journey. By the end, the person she becomes is incredibly powerful.

Hades finds Ophelia, who is Persephone reincarnated, and his reaction to her is immediate. He is drawn to her, but there’s this internal conflict because she isn’t exactly the woman he remembers. He wants her, loves her, and yearns for what they had, but what stood out most was his patience. He gives her the space to learn, to question, and to come into her own, which made their connection feel deeper.

The story isn’t just about the two of them. There’s something much bigger happening, and I loved how it brought in familiar figures from Greek mythology. Everything is set in a modern timeline, so instead of feeling distant or ancient, the gods feel grounded and almost human, while still holding onto their power and identity.

This story pulls you in right away and doesn’t let go. I was invested in Ophelia and Hades from the start, but as the plot expanded, so did my interest. The way everything came together at the end felt satisfying, even though it left me wanting more. Now I just need Book 2. I received this book as an ARC and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This is Ophelia. And she is incredible. Still familiar in so many ways but new in others.

Greek mythology, especially retellings of Hades and Persephone, is one of my favorite things to read, and I've read many books, Neon Gods by Katee Robert being my all time favorite book that really showed Hades as I imagined him to be. So, I really had high hopes for this book when I applied for the eARC. Did it live up to the high expectations I had? Not really. However, it was enjoyable as far as the retelling can go.

The premise of the book is interesting and had good potential. The idea of god's soul reincarnated into human bodies was indeed something new that I definitely liked, and I really enjoyed the explanation why not all gods exist in the real world, giving it an air of originality to the story. The pacing was fast, the high stakes beginning really hooking me from the start.

The start was well written, and I expected the book to continue to have the same momentum, however, the story felt surface level, almost too superficial. I expected to care for the characters as I kept reading, but Ophelia did piss me off at times. I tried liking her character, but to me she seemed too immature and stubborn, especially in the first half of the book, but maybe it was just me.

Hades and Hecate were the two main characters that really saved the book from total ruin. If it weren't for Hades' perspective chapters I would have DNFed the book without looking back a second time.

Did I enjoy this book? Eh. Ophelia had the potential to be an amazing character, but for me she was a hard pass. Do I recommend this book? Yes, it can be enjoyable if you're looking for something easy and fast paced to read. It could get you out of a reading slump. Or get you into one. It really depends on the standards you have for Hades/Persephone retellings.

I finished this ARC with a very positive overall impression. The story is fluid and easy to follow, making it a smooth and engaging read from beginning to end. While I did notice a few typos, they never disrupted my immersion or enjoyment.
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is its atmosphere. The world feels vivid and almost cinematic, I could clearly picture each scene as it unfolded, which made the reading experience even more immersive.

Hades himself is undeniably one of the highlights of the book. He is intense, commanding, and carries a powerful presence that gives real weight to his character. Every scene involving him feels charged, and his aura alone is enough to hold the reader’s attention. Ophelia, however, is what truly grounded the story for me. Although she can come across as somewhat naïve at times, I found her psychological journey particularly compelling. The way her character grapples with identity, not recognizing herself, questioning her place, feeling as though she doesn’t fully exist, adds an emotional layer that I really appreciated. There’s a quiet but consistent evolution in her character, something subtle yet meaningful that develops naturally throughout the story.

The tension is maintained well across the narrative. It never fully drops, which kept me engaged and eager to continue reading chapter after chapter. By the end, I found myself especially intrigued by Zeus, enough to want to explore his character further in the next installment.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read: immersive, emotionally engaging, and driven by strong character presence. A solid 4 stars for me.

Hades: King of Longing is a beautiful retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone—one of my absolute favorite tropes.
In this story, we meet a modernized set of gods who have had to keep up with changing times. Since the world has forgotten them, they’ve found new ways to survive, each making the most of their unique godly abilities.
Enter Ophelia Marin, a young florist who unknowingly possesses Persephone’s soul. From here on… absolute mayhem.
The story flows like the River Styx, gradually immersing the reader in the gods’ new reality while centering on its core: the reunion of Hades with his beloved Persephone—now her essence in the body of a woman with no memory of her past life. Throughout the book, we feel Ophelia’s angst, frustration, fear, and the slow bloom of new emotions toward a man she doesn’t truly know—and struggles to believe is the King of the Underworld, while also feeling Hades’ longing (so much longing!) and love for his wife, but knowing he can’t rush her.
Kennedy Slope does a fantastic job with the dual POVs, allowing us to experience both sides of the same coin in first person: Hades, an ancient god who has waited endlessly to reunite with his soulmate, and Ophelia, a woman caught between two identities, unable to fully embrace her new reality. All of this unfolds under the looming presence of an unknown threat, dangerously close to destroying everything they know, and the knowledge that not everyone can be trusted.

Ophelia trying to get a hold of her powers reminds me of Joey’s partner during the game show Pyramid: frustration until they just click!

I received an ARC of this book but all opinions are my own.

An exciting twist on the classic hades x Persephone tale, but set in our modern world in Vegas!

You follow a young women who owns her own failing flower shop named Ophelia, who’s had to make it on her own after fleeing from her abusive mother as a child and her fathers recent passing. When one day people come to try to kidnap her and in the midst of their attempt, she’s whisked away by this handsome but equally terrifying man who claims to be Hades. She learns that the Greek gods might actually be real though some have slowly been fading from existence and she is supposedly the reincarnation of Persephone. She must work with hades and the other gods to understand why this cult wants to kidnap her and what their plan is before they attempt to take her again.

This book had me hooked from the moment she comes face to face with hades and there is instant tension and a draw between them. I loved unraveling this world and her powers right along with the FMC, and that while she may be her reincarnation, she is not the same shy and soft girl as Persephone and is a hardened badass from what life has thrown at her. I really enjoyed the exploration of what Greek gods/goddesses would be like and have to do to survive in our world and also how this book set up for what I think will be an exciting and complex series exploring the stories of several characters! I cannot wait for the next book and overall my rating 4.4/5!

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

I was lucky to be an ARC reader for Hades King of Longing by Kennedy Slope!

I applied for this one IMMEDIATELY, as the myth of Hades and Persephone is one of my all time favorite stories and I am a sucker for any version or retelling. Slope offers a great modern take on the pantheon of Greek Gods, explaining how they would adapt to the evolving world and into modern times, with some Gods surviving and adapting and others fading from lack of worship.

Persephone had faded and Hades longed for her for centuries, eventually striking a deal with the Fates for her rebirth. I love the versions of Hades where he's absolutely and irrefutably in love with his wife, and this book gives us the PINING.

Slope's version of a modern day Persephone takes form in the FMC Ophelia, and she's one of my favorite portrayals of the Goddess! She's layered and strong, intelligent and also evolving. You can really feel her struggles to contend with being two people, and not really either.

The threat of a cult, the dangers of the power games of Gods, and the villainry of Callista make for an interesting plot to drive our protagonists together and change them forever.

I really look forward to the next installment in this series!

Favorite Quotes:

"I'm not going to fuck you." There's something fierce in his voice now. "I'm going to consume you. You're going to be so overwhelmed by what I give you that there's no room for anything else..."

"Come on, my queen. Give your King his due."

"It's perfect. You're perfect. All of you: past, present, whoever you become."

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was an interesting take on the Greek pantheon surviving to modern day (well, some of them anyway) and how they had to change themselves to do so. I like the idea of a reincarnated Persephone, as it seems in line with her history of being the goddess of spring and new life, as well as the consort of the god of the dead.
However, I also had questions about this. Why was Hades so desperate for her to be back? If he were the god of the dead, then why/how could he not see her or interact with her between lives? I didn't think this was ever fully addressed.
The characters were good, but not fully fleshed out emotionally enough for me. The FMC kept running the hot/cold game, which got annoying after a while.
There were moments that felt drawn out (training in the penthouse) and others that felt rushed through (the rescue), which cut through the tension that could have been built up.
I did appreciate the fact that our FMC made it a point to address the fact of whether or not Hades loved her or just the memory of who she used to be. This was great, as I think of this question when I read romances dealing with reincarnated mates or fated mates (like, do you love me because the bond tells you to, or does it just enhance the natural feeling that is already there to better guide you?
Overall, this was a decent read, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a mythic retelling or the pantheon gods existing in today's world (think Neon Gods) with some spice.

Arc book❤️‍🔥

Greek mythology and this book is Hades and Persephones story only she isn’t her anymore she’s now Ophelia

I loved the Mythology / modern world spin of this book

We love a strong FMC 🫦

I loved all of the characters and I’m sooo hoping we get more books with more background to them all..
The suspense, it had me hooked!

My first mythology book and I loooved it

‘my soul would always know hers. No matter what she looked like, or how she speaks, I would always know her.’ 🥲🥲 ugh

"You are the reason spring exists.’ 🌼 🪴

‘Being loved means someone will fight for your right to choose. Even if you don't choose them." Yes yes and yes again

This book is under dark romance but I’m not sure I’d call it that imo…

‘He looks like every dangerous fantasy I've ever had and several I didn't know I wanted.’ Oh hell yea🫦

❤️‍🔥’the way he makes me feel like I'm coming apart and being remade in the same breath.’ ❤️‍🔥

‘Good girl’ will always get me.

‘Patience, little flower." 💐 🌷 🌼

One of my faves.. ‘"Let's see what it's like to ride Death." Hell yes sister. 🫣

And

‘She is mine. In this life and every life after. No matter the price.’ ❤️‍🔥

I loved their story sm, and I loved that Ophelia was made to be strong and she brought Hades back by remembering that he is her true love❤️‍🔥 we love a fairy tail spin on things

Very addictive story and a very easy read, I didn’t want to put it down but (work takes over 😪🤣)

Overall this book was a 4.5 for me, I wish we had more in depth information about all of the characters and ending on a CH ughhh gimme book 2 pls haha

This book caught me off guard in the best and most unsettling way.

I went in expecting a familiar Hades and Persephone retelling, but what I got instead was something much darker and more emotionally intense. Ophelia doesn’t feel like a mythical figure—she feels real. She’s tired, grieving, stubborn, and completely unwilling to accept the reality forced on her. I appreciated that more than I expected. Her reactions felt human, not romanticized.

Hades, on the other hand, is not an easy character to like. I found myself constantly torn between conflicting feelings about him. He protects her, yes—but he also controls her. That push and pull created tension that kept me reading, even when I wasn’t sure how I felt about their dynamic.

The writing is immersive, especially in the opening chapters. The kidnapping scene and everything that follows pulled me in immediately. I could feel the fear, the confusion, and the disorientation right alongside Ophelia.

At times, the story leans heavily on explanations about the world and mythology, which slowed things down a bit for me. However, the emotional intensity and the mystery of what was really going on kept me engaged.

This is not a light romance. It’s darker, heavier, and explores uncomfortable themes. If you’re looking for something soft and dreamy, this isn’t it. But if you’re okay with morally complex characters and a story that challenges you a bit, it’s worth reading.

I am an absolute SUCKER for any Hades x Persephone retelling, so I already knew I was going to eat this up…

But I was NOT prepared for how obsessed I’d become.

Kennedy took the story we all know and love and gave it a fresh twist with Ophelia being a reborn Persephone—and I swear it made everything hit harder. The tension, the connection, the pull between them?? I felt it in my SOUL.

Ophelia was such a strong FMC. She goes through so much, but never lets it define her, and watching her grow into herself?? I loved every second of it.

And Hades…

yeah, I’m unwell.

He is the perfect mix of possessive, protective, and completely gone for her. This is VERY much a “he falls first” situation and he falls HARD. The way he interacts with Ophelia vs. literally anyone else?? The contrast??? I was giggling, kicking my feet, twirling my hair.

Like sir, you are the God of Death… act like it.

Also I loved how Kennedy brought in the other gods and goddesses. Everything felt so unique and immersive, and as someone who loves Greek mythology, I was living for it.

✨ Reborn Persephone
✨ He falls first
✨ Touch her and you’re done
✨ Tension + yearning + obsession

I could NOT put this book down. I devoured it.
This is such a strong start to a series and I already know I’m going to be feral waiting for the next one.

Kennedy Slope's book Hades: God of Longing is book one in the Gods of Obsidianseries, a fun and engaging new series based on the ancient Greek Gods who happen to be living in today's world, hiding in plain sight among us mortals.

Hades, God of the Underworld, spent millennia waiting for his wife Persephone, Goddess of Life and Birth to return to him, and when she does, her memories are missing. But that doesn't stop people from searching for her in hopes of resurrecting other Gods and Goddesses who passed on between the time of Ancient Greece and now.

Hades, however, will do everything in his power to make sure she is protected and safe in his territory where she has always belonged.

Ms. Slope did an amazing job bringing the ancient Gods and Goddess life. The emotions she evokes: the pain and longing Hades feels as he is forced to wait for his love to return to him. The confusion and frustration Persephone, now known as Ophelia, feels as she regains both her memories and powers, but also the hopelessness she feels when she thinks the only reason is for who she used to be and not who she is now.

Readers will get pulled deep into the story, and cheer, then when the good guys win, cry win they loose, and despair when they realize they have to wait for the next book in the series to be released.

thank you love notes pr & kennedy slope for this arc!

as a huge fan of greek mythology retellings, specifically hades and persephone, i was so excited to dive into this. i’ve read quite a few of these, but the reincarnation twist here felt so unique. seeing persephone in a different body added such a cool layer to the "fated lovers" trope that kept me hooked from the start.

the writing was solid and the chemistry between the leads was definitely there, but it wasn’t just a romance. i loved that the plot was actually super compelling on its own, with plenty of drama and political tension among the gods. there were some changes to the traditional myths that i haven't seen in other retellings, which made the world-building feel really original!

and you mix in a group of cultists?? ok im sat

while a few spots felt a little rushed or underdeveloped, where I’d love more details, the story was so engaging that i honestly couldn't put it down. that ending set things up perfectly for book two, and i’m already lowkey obsessed with seeing where this goes. i’m definitely sticking around for the rest of this series and will be keeping an eye out for updates from kennedy slope! if you want a myth retelling that actually brings something different to the table, you need to check this out.

I did not expect this!!! Wow, wow, and WOW!!!
This book was intense, emotionally charged, and a refreshing take on the Hades and Persephone myth. It pulled me in from the very first page and kept me on edge, but how couldn't? We’re talking about fated mates, fated Gods, Life and Death, and betrayal at a divine level.
As a reader, the MMC usually makes or breaks a story for me, and in this case, Hades literally stopped my heart (pun intended) while Persephone/Ophelia brought it back to life.
Ophelia’s journey was beautifully written; watching her go from fearing her powers as a “mental illness” to embracing her strength and true identity felt good. Hades is the ultimate morally gray, possessive god. His millennia of longing and devotion made their connection feel inevitable, even as the story explored darker themes of kidnapping and control. I loved the modern Las Vegas setting; it blended seamlessly with the looming sense of prophecy and ancient deity drama with. The slow burn builds into a relationship that is hot, consuming, and raw. That twist toward the end almost shocked me. However, I was grinning so hard at the finish.
A gripping, atmospheric dark paranormal romance. If you love fated mates, obsession, and high-stakes mythology retellings, this is a must-read.

I love Greek mythology and the story variations people create, so when an opportunity came to read this book I knew I needed to just by the title.

This book had me intrigued from the very beginning. The way the FMC is introduced gives you and understanding of her world as she sees it & the reader is learning just as she is.

I loved that I personally felt the struggle she had throughout most of the book (without spoiling) & how it was all incorporated through a more modern timeline (likewise with Hades).

The only reason I would not make this book higher than 4 starts is simply because while, yes, Hades was the King of Longing, things felt cut short & the sentence structure would sometimes throw me off. There were moments where I would really start to feel the emotion intended, but then the sentence would be over and we’d be moved to a separate scene. Perhaps that is by design, making you feel that similar longing? I do, however, feel like those shorter structures could be doing a disservice to the story as a whole.

The characters are there, the pilot is there I just wish I could’ve expanded on things more.

I really want to thank Love Notes PR for the opportunity to review this e-ARC.

Hades: King of Longing was an amazing read. I just couldn't put my kindle down and read it in one go. It is a really well thought out and complete story, there are many dimensions to everything and layers to every character. It is complex when it comes to feelings and self identity for the FMC, and incredibly heart wrenching for the MMC.

The title of the book is spot on, the longing, the yearning and hoping is just inmaculate. You cannot help but put yourself in the MMCs shoes and understand their individual positions, even when you are crossing your fingers for them to put aside their hang ups and turn the page so they can restart their forever together.

I am waiting anxiously for the next book in the series, especially because it seems we are going to get a glimpse into Zeus' story. Hopefully, it won't be a long wait. Kennedy Slope has a gift for this genre and Hades is a very special book.

I truly recommend this book for those who lovethe following tropes: longing, hidden identity, greek mythology, fated mates and reincarnation.

Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
