I crack heads and banish demons. Not always in that order.
John McKraken has seen every flavor of hell—most of them up close, all of them with a bad attitude. As the Vatican’s most reluctantly employed demon hunter, he’s made a career out of cleaning up supernatural messes no one wants to admit exist. But when his mentor turns up dead and an apocalyptic grimoire disappears, John finds himself framed, furious, and very much on the menu.
With assassins on his heels and demons sniffing at his soul, John is forced into an uneasy partnership with a razor‑witted journalist who asks too many questions and a modern‑day samurai who answers them with steel. Together, they chase a trail of blood, lies, and brimstone from the Vatican’s sanctified shadows to the decadent depths of the HellFire Club.
Gritty, sharp‑tongued, and darkly humorous, this noir‑soaked urban fantasy follows a demon hunter who’s running out of allies, out of time, and out of patience. But if the world’s going to end, John McKraken is determined to make sure it goes down swinging.
This book was a giveaway win. Honestly, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't really great either. The whole story was kind of cheesy and everything seemed too convenient. I also had issues reading the dialogue. I get that the author was mimicking the accent of Siobhan, but reading "ye" so many times just took me out of the story. There was also a Japanese character that when he was first introduced just spoke in broken English but then suddenly didn't really have issues speaking English? It was a quick read though.
Again, I don't know the author--many, including myself, think early 5 star ratings are from friends of the author, but this is not the case for me. He wrote a solid story and deserves some reads in my opinion.
