Hudson Cole has two regrets in his life, both concerned Betty Ramirez.
Betty grew up in the city. When she was twenty-five, she bought a bar, The Flame. She's spent all her time, effort, and money on keeping the bar going.
Four weeks ago, in the alley behind the bar, she witnessed two cops kill Chris Greene, an unarmed man. Being an upstanding citizen, she reported what she saw. No one in the police department was interested in taking her report.
The cops, Lang and Briggs, have perfect records on paper, and both of them are highly decorated officers. In reality, both of them are corrupt and responsible for many deaths and illegal dealings.
She refuses to withdraw her complaint. The trial date is approaching. It won't be hard for them to arrange her death—something Hudson doesn't plan to let happen.

It was a small funeral: her, her best friend, Layla, and some men from the factory where he had worked. Betty was shattered; if only Hudson had been there, it would have been less painful. Hudson had gotten involved with Black Ops while he was in the military. It didn't take him long to realize that the enemy often struck at one's loved ones rather than going after them. He knew that if

Leaving Betty ten years ago was Hudson’s greatest regret. He told himself he was protecting her, but in reality, all he did was break her heart. From a distance, he watched her struggle to rebuild, turning a rundown dive bar into the dream she once shared with her dad, and then battling the crushing grief of losing the only family she had left. Yet still, he stayed away. No calls, no card… nothing. Honestly, that might have been the hardest part to understand. But when Betty finds herself in danger after witnessing a crime, Hudson is pulled back into her life, and if there’s one thing he knows how to do, it’s how to protect the people he loves. I absolutely loved Betty. She’s brave, resilient, and fiercely determined to do the right thing. And while this is a second-chance romance, I really appreciated that she didn’t just fall back into Hudson’s arms the moment he reappeared. She made him face the pain he caused, the anger she carried, and the audacity of him walking back into her life like he still had a right to be there. Hudson, for his part, may have stayed away for all those years, but his feelings never wavered. He doesn’t make excuses for his past, he owns it. He shows up, tries to make amends, and, most importantly, doesn’t pressure Betty to forgive him before she’s ready. That quiet accountability was easily my favorite thing about him. The slow-burn reconciliation really worked for me, especially as Betty sorted through her tangled emotions. And with the constant undercurrent of danger, the story is charged with both suspense and undeniable chemistry. The tension, emotional and otherwise, keeps everything crackling. If you love your romance with a side of angst and a dash of danger, this one absolutely delivers.

This was so-so romantic suspense novella. Betty owns a bar and sees two dirty cops shoot a guy in the back alley. She decides to testify against them and “accidents” start happening.
Enter Hudson. He and Betty were madly in love years ago, but when he got the chance to work deep dark ops for the government he walked away. He has built an “elite private security firm” and has been keeping an eye on her all these years, though.
And this is just one of the reasons I had problems with the story. I didn’t find his obsessive behavior romantic. He’s had people literally watching her al these years? It was just creepy. Which leads to another problem: How did Hudson do so much in so little time? He worked for the government yet also set up a wildly successful business. And somehow that business allows him access to everything and anything, with the only explanation being that he has resources. Ooooookay.
I also thought Betty forgave Hudson far too quickly. The guy lies to her, leaves her for ten years, isn’t there when her father passes away, and has been spying on her and invading her privacy for a decade. And now he shows up out of nowhere and asks her to trust him. Uh, no. Nope. Big no.
I really wanted to like the book, but the story was just so farfetched and I couldn’t excuse it. I can temper my disbelief only so much. I’ve enjoyed books by this author in the past, but this one just missed all the marks for me.

His Only Assingment by Kalli Dean is the first title I've read by this author and it's also part of the multi author series Dangerous Devotion.
It was a good read and as a second chance, forced proximity, protective alpha hero, bodyguard suspense romance, the plot and storyline was engaging especially with the main characters of Betty, a confident, independent, bar owner and Hudson, the ex-military now owner and head of a highly successful private security company.
Betty witnessed a murder in the alley behind her bar and now finds her herself the target of intimidation and threats to her life. Out of the blue her ex boyfriend of ten years ago unexpectedly turns up on her doorstep promising and insisting on protection.
Hudson made the greatest mistake of his life walking away from Betty ten years ago but has never been able to get over her. Unknown to Betty, Hudson has watched over her from afar but now with danger circling he can no longer stay away.
Their chemistry hasn't dimmed even after all this time but Betty is adamant that its to late for them. During the course of the story the heat only increases as they spend time together in close quarters and inevitably the sparks ignite for some steamy and spicy moments.
Trust, forgiveness, protectiveness and some warm heart felt moments all combine for a story that kept me turning the pages to the very end to see how the suspense comes to a head and their HEA turns out.

Pageturner
This was quite a surprise.
I expected the usual security-guard-protects-her romance.
What I got instead is a really heartfelt story of two lovers, their past big mistakes and maybe second chances, peppered with an absolute thrill ride.

What I got instead is a really heartfelt story of two lovers, their past big mistakes and maybe second chances, peppered with an absolute thrill ride.

Betty and Hudson have a history that needs to be resolved for a second chance to be a possibility. Hudson has always watched over Betty from afar, but with the threats and danger closing in he steps back into her life to protect her at all costs. Will Betty and Hudson find a new path forward as they face the dangers escalating around Betty or will Hudson's reappearance be too late?
I recommend this book for a great interesting read and to find out what transpires between them.

This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and an angsty, suspenseful, steamy, second chance romance between Betty, the female bar owner lead, and Hudson, the male security business owner lead and her ex-boyfriend. I empathised with the stress that Betty was undergoing as well as the anger she felt towards Hudson from when he left her. I enjoyed her confident confrontations with him and her determination to keep herself emotionally safe. I enjoyed Hudson’s acknowledgment of the hurt he had caused as well as his focus on Betty’s safety at the current time. I enjoyed the building intimate tension and scenes. I enjoyed the ending.

Betty saw a crime and reported it, unfortunately they were two policemen that she saw, now everyone is after her. Various small things have been happening but when she was in danger Hudson got on a plane and came to help. She doesn't want him there, she hasn't forgiven him for just leaving her with no explanation except to say that he no longer loved her, it broke her.
Hudson is determined to find the people after her and to stop them, can he do that? Will she let him help her?

Possessive protection.
This is an entertaining read with a good plot premise. It starts strong. I loved Betty; she’s a strong character that’s going through a very difficult and dangerous time. I liked the brooding, devoted from a distance Hudson; he’s certainly someone you’d want on your side when in trouble. There are steamy scenes, action scenes, and even courthouse coverage. There were also continuity issues that kept breaking the flow of the story, however that’s just my bug-bear when reading and it may not bother others so much. I’d say this story is closer to a 3.5 stars because of that.

This book is part of a multi author series called Dangerous Devotion. Tropes: security, ex black ops, ex lovers, second chance, and forced proximity. Betty witnessed a murder by two corrupt cops which has put her life at risk. Hudson is done watching from afar 10 years of the woman he still loves. I loved Betty. She's fierce, strong, and does what's right even if it isn't the easy way. I was rooting for Hudson. He knew he made the wrong decision when he walked away 10 years ago. I liked how he didn't push Betty to accept his forgiveness. There was action, spice, and love rebuilding.

This one is. Hudson and Betty’s story is in the making for the last 10 years and it’s still amazes me how I love this story so much!!!
Was my first reading of her and i love it!!! Fast paced, beautiful romance, a man who loves her so much that he will disappear to protect her but never forget her. He came back when she needed him the most and will do anything for her to keep her safe.
I really enjoyed their story and I’m going to read every book she wrote. I highly recommended it!!

Hudson Cole left Betty 10 years ago to protect her. He broke her but still watched her. When she finds herself in trouble, he just shows up. He is the right man to protect her but the past hangs between them.The part I love about this book is how strong she is, the doesn’t just fall back into a relationship with him or forgive him and he patiently waits for her to decide what she wants. This book is an excellent read.

Strong start to a new series, with an intriguing twist for Betty in a near fatal collision, only that just the most recent attempt on her life. With no one to turn to, in walks her past to help keep her safe and no longer stay in the shadows. Loved the connection between the main characters along with the backstory as to why there is tension between them. Great outcome for this couple, and for standing up for the truth.

Her ex the only guy she has every loved has been watching her for 10 years from afar, but that all changes when she is almost killed when her car is run off the road.
