He broke her heart ten years ago. Now he's the only one who can save her life. She witnessed a murder. Now she's the target. Betty hasn't seen Hudson Cole in ten years. Not since he broke her heart and disappeared into the night. But when dirty cops want her dead before she can testify, her ex shows up at her door with one promise. No one touches what's mine. She should hate him. She definitely shouldn't want him in her bed. Too bad her heart didn't get the memo. His Only Assignment is a steamy second chance romance with HEA.
Kalli Dean lives on coffee, chocolate and Baileys. Not necessarily in that order. She lives on the Mid North Coast of Australia and if she’s not eating, hiking or reading, she’s definitely plotting some scheme for her characters, based on her friend’s real life events (sorry, not sorry!).
Hudson Cole has two regrets in his life, both concerned Betty Ramirez.
Betty grew up in the city. When she was twenty-five, she bought a bar, The Flame. She's spent all her time, effort, and money on keeping the bar going.
Four weeks ago, in the alley behind the bar, she witnessed two cops kill Chris Greene, an unarmed man. Being an upstanding citizen, she reported what she saw. No one in the police department was interested in taking her report.
The cops, Lang and Briggs, have perfect records on paper, and both of them are highly decorated officers. In reality, both of them are corrupt and responsible for many deaths and illegal dealings.
She refuses to withdraw her complaint. The trial date is approaching. It won't be hard for them to arrange her death—something Hudson doesn't plan to let happen.
Hudson has two regrets in his life. The first one is having left Betty. The second one is not showing up for her father's funeral. He's never stopped loving her. However, has he left things too late for her to give him a second chance?
Since filing her complaint, against the advice of the police, there have been threats, a break-in, and vandalism. But today a black SUV rammed her car on a busy road, hoping to kill her. It was a miracle she wasn’t killed. Now she doesn't know who to trust or how to keep herself safe. The police certainly aren't interested in her safety. What's she to do next?
Hudson had met Betty twelve years ago when he was twenty and had just finished basic training. A drunk in the bar where she worked was hassling her. He had grabbed her wrist and wasn't letting go. Before she could take care of it herself, something she was quite capable of doing, Hudson had stepped into the fray.
Betty immediately fell in love with him, and they became a couple. They lived together for two years before suddenly, ten years ago, he dropped her and cut off any and all communication with her.
He didn't even contact her two years ago when her beloved father died. Her mother had abandoned her family when Betty was twelve. Her father had become her entire world. He worked double shifts at the factory to provide for her. He taught her how to change a tire, throw a punch, and never let the other guy see her cry.
He had died of a massive heart attack while in his kitchen. She was told that his death was instantaneous, as if that would make it easier for her. It was a small funeral: her, her best friend, Layla, and some men from the factory where he had worked. Betty was shattered; if only Hudson had been there, it would have been less painful. But he wasn't there...
Hudson had gotten involved with Black Ops while he was in the military. It didn't take him long to realize that the enemy often struck at one's loved ones rather than going after them. He knew that if Betty were to be captured by any of his foes, that would be worse than him being captured or killed.
He founded Black Hawk Protection, an elite service that is in great demand. He's kept track of Betty since he left her. Seeing her almost run off the road and get killed was enough for him to finally return to her. He had known of her father's death and almost attended his funeral, but at the last minute, he changed his mind.
She's hurt, angry, and excited at his return. When she learns that he knew about her father's death but chose not to attend the funeral, she's crushed. He knowingly stayed away despite knowing how much she needed him to be there with her. That betrayal may be the beginning of the end for them...

When Betty becomes a target after witnessing a murder, survival means letting the last man she ever wants to see back into her life. Years ago, Hudson leaves her wrecked without an explanation. Now he’s at her door, colder, more dangerous, and set on keeping her alive whether she wants him there or not.
What starts as protection turns into brutal proximity, where every shared room drags old pain back to the surface. Betty stays guarded and frayed at the edges, while Hudson moves through her world like control is the only thing holding him together. The closer the danger gets, the harder it is to separate fear from want.
As the pressure builds, so do the truths they’ve both buried. What broke them apart starts to sharpen into focus, and the fight to keep Betty safe gets tangled with guilt, obsession, and everything they still can't put down. Their history starts feeling less finished and more dangerous than ever.
Betty begins hypervigilant and emotionally shut down, then slowly moves toward a more honest vulnerability that doesn't cost her self-respect. Hudson starts out controlling, guilt-ridden, and emotionally locked tight, then becomes more accountable as he stops hiding behind protection and finally proves he can stay. Their relationship shifts from bitter reunion and unresolved obsession into something more mutual, where desire, trust, and emotional repair stop fighting each other.
A dark, hot romantic suspense about old wounds, survival, and the risk of letting love back in when it once broke you, this story follows two people forced together by danger and unfinished history as grief, betrayal, and fear give way to truth, trust, and hard-won devotion. At its core, it's about rebuilding what was shattered and choosing to stay when leaving would be easier.
The Elevator Pitch: After witnessing a murder, a fiercely self-reliant woman becomes the next loose end two dirty cops need erased, and the only man capable of keeping her alive is the one who vanished after breaking her heart a decade earlier. Forced into each other’s orbit by danger, old betrayal and raw desire start pulling tight, turning every moment of protection into a reckoning neither of them can avoid. As the threat closes in, survival demands more than trust because they have to decide whether the love that once wrecked them is strong enough to carry them through the fire.
His Only Assignment by Kalli Dean is a gripping addition to the Dangerous Devotion series, delivering exactly what readers of romantic suspense crave: high stakes, intense chemistry, danger, emotional tension, and a love story that feels both fierce and hard-earned.
Kalli Dean has created a world that is gritty enough to feel believable without overwhelming the romance at the heart of the story. The suspense keeps the pages turning, but it is Betty and Hudson who make the book truly memorable. They are flawed, layered, and completely compelling together. From the beginning, Betty stood out to me as a heroine worth rooting for. She is vulnerable in ways that feel real, but she is also brave, resilient, and stronger than she may even realize. She is not just someone who needs saving; she is a woman fighting to survive, heal, and claim the future she deserves.
Hudson is the kind of hero this genre does so well; protective, intense, and dangerously devoted. Betty has been in Hudson's sights for some time. His devotion to her walks that delicious line between protective and borderline obsessive, giving their romance the kind of heat and emotional urgency that makes it impossible to look away.
What I loved most is that their connection did not feel easy or surface-level. Their shared history, pain, and personal wounds gave their relationship depth. They had real obstacles to overcome, and that made their journey to a happily ever after even more satisfying. I was completely invested in them and could not put the book down until I knew they would find their way through the danger, the emotional fallout, and the past standing between them.
His Only Assignment is suspenseful, steamy, emotional, and addictive. It is the kind of book that pulls you in quickly and keeps you there until the final page. Fans of gritty romantic suspense with protective heroes, strong heroines, and intense chemistry will absolutely want to pick this one up. I am already looking forward to the next book in the series, Terms of Surrender.

Leaving Betty ten years ago was Hudson’s greatest regret. He told himself he was protecting her, but in reality, all he did was break her heart. From a distance, he watched her struggle to rebuild, turning a rundown dive bar into the dream she once shared with her dad, and then battling the crushing grief of losing the only family she had left. Yet still, he stayed away. No calls, no card… nothing. Honestly, that might have been the hardest part to understand. But when Betty finds herself in danger after witnessing a crime, Hudson is pulled back into her life, and if there’s one thing he knows how to do, it’s how to protect the people he loves. I absolutely loved Betty. She’s brave, resilient, and fiercely determined to do the right thing. And while this is a second-chance romance, I really appreciated that she didn’t just fall back into Hudson’s arms the moment he reappeared. She made him face the pain he caused, the anger she carried, and the audacity of him walking back into her life like he still had a right to be there. Hudson, for his part, may have stayed away for all those years, but his feelings never wavered. He doesn’t make excuses for his past, he owns it. He shows up, tries to make amends, and, most importantly, doesn’t pressure Betty to forgive him before she’s ready. That quiet accountability was easily my favorite thing about him. The slow-burn reconciliation really worked for me, especially as Betty sorted through her tangled emotions. And with the constant undercurrent of danger, the story is charged with both suspense and undeniable chemistry. The tension, emotional and otherwise, keeps everything crackling. If you love your romance with a side of angst and a dash of danger, this one absolutely delivers. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was so-so romantic suspense novella. Betty owns a bar and sees two dirty cops shoot a guy in the back alley. She decides to testify against them and “accidents” start happening.
Enter Hudson. He and Betty were madly in love years ago, but when he got the chance to work deep dark ops for the government he walked away. He has built an “elite private security firm” and has been keeping an eye on her all these years, though.
And this is just one of the reasons I had problems with the story. I didn’t find his obsessive behavior romantic. He’s had people literally watching her al these years? It was just creepy. Which leads to another problem: How did Hudson do so much in so little time? He worked for the government yet also set up a wildly successful business. And somehow that business allows him access to everything and anything, with the only explanation being that he has resources. Ooooookay.
I also thought Betty forgave Hudson far too quickly. The guy lies to her, leaves her for ten years, isn’t there when her father passes away, and has been spying on her and invading her privacy for a decade. And now he shows up out of nowhere and asks her to trust him. Uh, no. Nope. Big no.
I really wanted to like the book, but the story was just so farfetched and I couldn’t excuse it. I can temper my disbelief only so much. I’ve enjoyed books by this author in the past, but this one just missed all the marks for me.

His Only Assingment by Kalli Dean is the first title I've read by this author and it's also part of the multi author series Dangerous Devotion. It was a good read and as a second chance, forced proximity, protective alpha hero, bodyguard suspense romance, the plot and storyline was engaging especially with the main characters of Betty, a confident, independent, bar owner and Hudson, the ex-military now owner and head of a highly successful private security company. Betty witnessed a murder in the alley behind her bar and now finds her herself the target of intimidation and threats to her life. Out of the blue her ex boyfriend of ten years ago unexpectedly turns up on her doorstep promising and insisting on protection. Hudson made the greatest mistake of his life walking away from Betty ten years ago but has never been able to get over her. Unknown to Betty, Hudson has watched over her from afar but now with danger circling he can no longer stay away. Their chemistry hasn't dimmed even after all this time but Betty is adamant that its to late for them. During the course of the story the heat only increases as they spend time together in close quarters and inevitably the sparks ignite for some steamy and spicy moments. Trust, forgiveness, protectiveness and some warm heart felt moments all combine for a story that kept me turning the pages to the very end to see how the suspense comes to a head and their HEA turns out.

He broke her heart ten years ago. Now he's the only one who can save her life.
She witnessed a murder. Now she's the target.
Then her ex shows up with one promise.
No one touches what's mine.
She should hate him. She definitely shouldn't want him in her bed.
Too bad her heart didn't get the memo.

His Only Assignment is a fast-paced, emotional second chance romance packed with danger, tension, and undeniable chemistry. Kalli Dean delivers a gripping story that blends romantic suspense with a deeply personal love story.
Betty is a strong and relatable heroine, thrown into a terrifying situation after witnessing a murder. Her fear, resilience, and emotional conflict—especially when faced with the man who once broke her heart—make her journey compelling from start to finish.
Hudson Cole is the perfect protective hero—intense, loyal, and determined to keep Betty safe at all costs. His return after ten years brings unresolved feelings and unanswered questions, adding depth to their connection. His “no one touches what’s mine” energy brings that powerful, possessive edge readers love.
The chemistry between Betty and Hudson is immediate and charged with history, creating a mix of tension, longing, and emotional payoff. The second chance dynamic is done beautifully, with just the right balance of past heartbreak and present danger.
The suspense element keeps the story moving quickly, with high stakes that make it hard to put down. If you love protective heroes, second chance romance, and stories filled with action and emotion, His Only Assignment is a great pick.

I expected the usual security-guard-protects-her romance. What I got instead is a really heartfelt story of two lovers, their past big mistakes and maybe second chances, peppered with an absolute thrill ride.
Betty owns a bar, the Flame, and one night watches in the back alley behind the club how bad cops kill a guy. Instead of turning a blind eye, she reports what she saw. I found myself wondering if I should admire her courage or her naivety.
As expected, when the case is going to court and Betty is a core witness, threats start rolling in. When all this reaches the point where her life is in danger, suddenly her ex reappears on her doorstep.
Hudson literally ghosted the girl ten years back.
Now Betty tries to figure out why he did what he did at the time and why he has returned. And can she ever trust a guy again, who left without an explanation or a single word? (And don't forget, made zero contact with her for the last ten years.)
At the same time the killer is out to get Betty and the girl is on the run for her life.
Gripping story all round and you really feel for Hudson and Betty.
This was an action packed second chance romance. It will lure you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. Once you start to read it, you will find it is difficult to put down. Betty owns a bar. Her mother walked out on her, her father passed away and ten years ago the love of her life left her. She is truly alone. One night she witnesses two cops shooting an unarmed man. After reporting the incident the threats start coming. Hudson owns a security company. Ten years ago he made the biggest mistake of his life and has lived with regret since. When he finds out Betty is in danger he walks back into her life to protect what belongs to him. Will she give him a second chance? Can he protect her from a corrupt police force? This is so swoon worthy. Betty is so independent but also still experiencing the pain Hudson caused when he left. Hudson is willing to do what ever it takes to win back Betty’s love. Such a great read.

Military romance. Betty is a young woman who has lost everything: her mother after she disappeared, the love of her life who left her for the army, and her father, the only one who stayed by her side until his death. Now alone, she works hard in her bar until she witnesses a murder in the alley behind it. Now she's being hunted by two corrupt cops. And the only person who shows up at her door one night is none other than her ex-boyfriend, Hudson Cole, who left her for his career. Hudson is a former soldier who now runs his own private security company. He had to give it all up before joining the army to protect the people he loves. Now he's back to protect and reclaim Betty, the love of his life. Will Betty and Hudson have a beautiful love story, or will Betty never be able to forget the pain Hudson caused her by leaving her, not to mention the men who come after her….

His Only Assignment is 1 of 18 books by multiple authors that is part of the Dangerous Devotion series. This is an intriguing novella story that is a great enjoyable read. The story includes a second chance at love, danger, devotion, action, and sizzling steamy scenes.
Betty and Hudson have a history that needs to be resolved for a second chance to be a possibility. Hudson has always watched over Betty from afar, but with the threats and danger closing in he steps back into her life to protect her at all costs. Will Betty and Hudson find a new path forward as they face the dangers escalating around Betty or will Hudson's reappearance be too late?
I recommend this book for a great interesting read and to find out what transpires between them.
I received an early copy and leaving my honest review.
This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and an angsty, suspenseful, steamy, second chance romance between Betty, the female bar owner lead, and Hudson, the male security business owner lead and her ex-boyfriend. I empathised with the stress that Betty was undergoing as well as the anger she felt towards Hudson from when he left her. I enjoyed her confident confrontations with him and her determination to keep herself emotionally safe. I enjoyed Hudson’s acknowledgment of the hurt he had caused as well as his focus on Betty’s safety at the current time. I enjoyed the building intimate tension and scenes. I enjoyed the ending.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
Betty and Hudson were a couple until he was recruited for special forces and broke up with her to keep her safe, he didn't discuss it with her, just decided. Betty saw a crime and reported it, unfortunately they were two policemen that she saw, now everyone is after her. Various small things have been happening but when she was in danger Hudson got on a plane and came to help. She doesn't want him there, she hasn't forgiven him for just leaving her with no explanation except to say that he no longer loved her, it broke her. Hudson is determined to find the people after her and to stop them, can he do that? Will she let him help her?
A great read from Kalli, looking forward to the next one!
This was a super quick read packed with raw emotions, tension, mystique and heart-warming scenes of love and honesty. Of course, our hero is a little protective and an Alpha male character. What more could you want? I love how Kalli Dean weaves a good slice of thriller into her romance books, and I can't wait to read the next in this Dangerous Devotion Series. Such a brilliant author. Kerry Kennedy Author
What should happen for the MMC to return to the FMC's life? Threats to her life. His skills are put to good use. It's suspenseful, the waiting when danger strikes again, and when it comes multiple times, it's dealt with fast. It's emotional for the heroine to let him back into her life. It's a long road for forgiveness and trust, but in this stressful situation, some feelings heighten: vulnerability, safety (maybe real, maybe false), and even love, if it hasn't been there all along, then it returns in full force. His devotion and love seem deep and beautiful. If only the waiting for years had been treated differently, without heartache. Overall, I enjoyed this story.

Hudson is all broody tough guy perfection, coming home to protect his first love who's heart he broke "for her own good" 10 years ago.
Betty trying her best to move on without him, has found herself the accidental witness to a murder and now the rogue cops are trying to force her silence!
The piping hot attraction between Betty & Hudson simmers from the very second he sweeps back into town to protect her from the bad guys and they cant fight fate luring them back together for long!!
Its an exciting adventure with just the right amount of heat and passion to ensure our heroes get the ending that they deserve!!!
Possessive protection. This is an entertaining read with a good plot premise. It starts strong. I loved Betty; she’s a strong character that’s going through a very difficult and dangerous time. I liked the brooding, devoted from a distance Hudson; he’s certainly someone you’d want on your side when in trouble. There are steamy scenes, action scenes, and even courthouse coverage. There were also continuity issues that kept breaking the flow of the story, however that’s just my bug-bear when reading and it may not bother others so much. I’d say this story is closer to a 3.5 stars because of that. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This book is part of a multi author series called Dangerous Devotion. Tropes: security, ex black ops, ex lovers, second chance, and forced proximity. Betty witnessed a murder by two corrupt cops which has put her life at risk. Hudson is done watching from afar 10 years of the woman he still loves. I loved Betty. She's fierce, strong, and does what's right even if it isn't the easy way. I was rooting for Hudson. He knew he made the wrong decision when he walked away 10 years ago. I liked how he didn't push Betty to accept his forgiveness. There was action, spice, and love rebuilding.

His Only Assignment by Kalli Dean is a first love turned second chance, high-stakes, suspense romance. The story intensifies when Hudson—the man who shattered Betty’s heart ten years ago—returns as her protector. As Betty prepares to testify against two corrupt cops, she and Hudson are forced to confront their painful history, all the while facing a very real, present-day threat.
If you enjoy a second chance romance with raw emotional healing then this one is for you.
I received an advanced copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Who doesn’t love a second chance at love? This one is. Hudson and Betty’s story is in the making for the last 10 years and it’s still amazes me how I love this story so much!!! Was my first reading of her and i love it!!! Fast paced, beautiful romance, a man who loves her so much that he will disappear to protect her but never forget her. He came back when she needed him the most and will do anything for her to keep her safe. I really enjoyed their story and I’m going to read every book she wrote. I highly recommended it!! 5⭐️
Hudson Cole left Betty 10 years ago to protect her. He broke her but still watched her. When she finds herself in trouble, he just shows up. He is the right man to protect her but the past hangs between them. The part I love about this book is how strong she is, the doesn’t just fall back into a relationship with him or forgive him and he patiently waits for her to decide what she wants. This book is an excellent read.

Strong start to a new series, with an intriguing twist for Betty in a near fatal collision, only that just the most recent attempt on her life. With no one to turn to, in walks her past to help keep her safe and no longer stay in the shadows. Loved the connection between the main characters along with the backstory as to why there is tension between them. Great outcome for this couple, and for standing up for the truth.

After witnessing a murder Betty is in danger from corrupt police officers and the only person who can keep her safe is her ex-boyfriend Hudson. Suspenseful, emotional and steamy kept me invested in this story and I could not get enough. This plot not only brought Betty and Hudson back together for a second chance, but the added intensity was exciting as well heart pounding. It was a fantastic read!
