After the death of the usurper, Lyanndra and Syran bring peace to Alastria once more. But when a familiar foe makes a daring escape from the palace dungeons and a devastating natural disaster strikes in the southernmost reaches of the lands, the whole kingdom is thrown into turmoil.
Separated by duty and pulled taut by the threads of fate, Lyanndra is forced to confront her past while Syran struggles with his new responsibilities as King of Alastria. And in the shadows, a terrible plot unfolds.
For beneath the kingdom, something has been slumbering for a very long time.
Once again, another book to love. We learned more about our FMC and MMC. we made new friends, some terrible some not so terrible. this book has yearning, diving into each other's fears and of course, lots and lots of spice.
Not to mention a villain so unhinged I actually enjoy her insanity. She definitely makes me feel better about myself lol
The relationship between Lyanndra & Syran is so so good. I love how deep the connection grows in this book, making the spice and yearning make complete sense.
The beginning and end was knocked out of the park and I still cannot stop thinking about it. The emotional damage was there, and you can tell Alina has laid some serious ground work for the characters and their revelations in the final book.
I did struggle with certain areas being quite repetitive and that is the only reason this isn't a 5 star review.
I would absolutely recommend this book and of course, The Godslayer 🖤
The Midnight Serpent picks up right after the events of The Godslayer and immediately proves to be a worthy successor. The world opens up nicely without getting bogged down and you are introduced to new characters that you will both love and love to hate.
Kramer manages to raise the tension to another level from book one with real consequences for our heroes and compelling villains to go against.
This book is a definite must read if you enjoy the fantasy/romance genre.
I received an ARC of this book ahead of publication. I’m writing this honest review voluntarily and am grateful to Alina Kramer for the opportunity to read it.
Rating: 4.25/5 Spice: 3/5 Tropes: Enemies to lovers, emotional scars, MMC yearning, touch her and die, fated mates, wound tending, The Chosen One, magic and prophecy, strong FMC
Memorable quotes: --"There will be times," he whispers, "when we fail. There will be moments we later come to regret. But we will have each other to lean upon. Neither of us need to carry the weight of our sins alone." --"I will be whatever you ask of me. I am yours, in every misfortune. In every miracle. In every lifetime. In every constellation." --"She is the Godslayer, and I will burn for her." --"He does not make me whole, but he makes me stronger. If I am the arm, he is my blade. He is my crossed star, and he belongs to me. And above all else, I love him."
Book 2 in Alina Kramer's Star Crossed Crown Series picks up right where we left off in The Godslayer, and I loved that the storyline just continued rather than rehashing past details. While Book 1 focused on the developing relationship between Lyanndra and Syran, this story dives headfirst into incredibly rich world building and an intriguing layered plot. One of my issues with the last book was that the story was a little predictable and while, well written I feel that the originality wasn't quite what it could have been. Kramer certainly made up for that in leaps and bounds with book 2--not only do we have the interwoven fates and deepening relationship of Syran and Lyanndra (i.e. the introduction of the "L" word!), but their trust in themselves and each other is also put to the test when she goes on a quest to find the Ushum.
The plot is very clearly laid out right from the beginning, but there are a few unexpected twists and turns along the way, and the pacing was excellent. This book also has two villains, potentially three, but that's a little ambiguous and up to the reader to decide. The depth of jealousy, madness, and straight up narcissistic delusion from both jaded lovers is impressive and I've VERY interested to see what book 3 brings for Ressa's story, especially with the potential intertwining of fates she has with Lyanndra.
I think perhaps my favorite part of this book is the emotional intelligence and acceptance displayed by both Syran and Lyanndra. While there is some serious yearning and devotion on his part, it is clear that he loves and accepts all of her and views her as an equal. She is learning that having a partner that truly believes in you, supports you and is by your side when things get hard isn't quite so bad after having been self-reliant for so many years. This book has it all, love, adventure, betrayal, reunions, epic battles, loss, magic, and a set up for a continuation of the story, which I will absolutely be reading when it is available!
I am the Godslayer. I was carved out on the battlefield and baptized in ash. I will not relent. I will not fall.
Thank you to Alina Kramer for the opportunity to be a part of The Midnight Serpent street team and the opportunity to ARC this book!
The Midnight Serpent by Alina Kramer is book two in the Star Crossed Crown Series and, ostensibly, fits squarely within the romantasy genre. There's a lady knight (though she would probably punch me for calling her a lady) and the golden retriever MMC. A bad "guy" and a psycho ex-girlfriend. Magic, mischief, and malice are deeply ingrained into the storyline. But it goes beyond the typical romantasy novel to introduce issues of heresy, belief, and the foundations of the tenants of faith. I would go into it more, but there's a reason that as part of the tropes list, Alina includes "cosmic horror (as a little treat)"!
The most impressive part of this novel for me was the way that the characters, who recognize their trauma, do not use their trauma as a weapon against others or as a means to make their relationship implode. Syran and Lyanndra have led very different lives, but that doesn't stop them from being able to be present with one another. Rather than trying to fix one another-- a job they clearly seem to understand is not theirs-- they sit with one another and allow each other to be in the moment that they find themselves in when they are in need of help and support. This is by far the healthiest and honestly sexiest relationship I've read in fantasy-- romantic or otherwise-- in a long time. There's no desire to fix the fact that Syran is occasionally an asshole or the fact that Lyanndra has all of the courtly manners of a drunkard in a tavern. They love each other for who they are and who they might become.
Beyond the relationship that just had my heart in my throat the whole read (if you've made it to chapter 30 and haven't lost your mind, I don't know what to tell you), the whole "mood" of the book is a good, slow build toward spooky and the sublime feeling of being in the presence of something bigger than yourself-- bigger than the human mind is capable of processing. The characters have to make hard decisions and face enormous losses to get to the other side of this story and they still aren't done with the trials that face them and Alastria by the end of the novel. I'm looking forward to all of the chaos and sexy dreams of book three in the series. If you love the sublime feeling of being in the presence of god/gods, like in a cathedral or a ruin, the heat and passion of a relationship that is built on absolute trust and fidelity, and the unhinged antics of a woman with a lot to lose and a great sword in hand (and a kelpie willing to eat people out of loyalty), you HAVE to pick up this book.
I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book and was not paid for my review.
*** Peace was short-lived. With a familiar enemy on the loose and disasters striking the south, Lyanndra and Syran are torn apart by duty. While Syran struggles under the weight of the crown, Lyanndra is forced to confront her past. But the real threat lies in the deep, something ancient, forgotten, and terrifying is waking up. • Fated Lovers • Ancient Evil • Duty Vs Desire • High Fantasy Sequel • Political Turmoil *** I was so excited to read this book after I flew through The Godslayer, and whilst it did not disappoint it inevitably brings a different vibe as book two.
In this book, we start to see how Syran and Lyanndra are adjusting to their lives at court and building a new and inclusive kingdom that welcomes everyone; demigods and starless alike. I love how the author doesn’t make it seamless and easy, there are tensions and difficulties, very clear human elements that cause rifts and problems. This theme continues throughout the book in such a fantastic way that, even as you face monsters, magic and gods it feels so relatable in so many ways.
Lyanndra faces so many challenges in this book that you cant help but fall more in love with her. She is proud, brave, private and flawed - her flaws feel real and natural, not contrived for the story. We feel the fear with her, whilst she does it anyway. We also really get to see how broken Syran is by his losses, how he struggles to be a good king and partner for Lyanndra. His devotion is never in doubt, and boy does he do devotion so well – he can worship me like that any day! But our boy gets a few “duh!” wake-up calls about his understanding of Lyanndra’s experiences and life.
I think this book excels in its storytelling of the fantastical and complex in a way that brings in a flawed but real way we can all relate to – whilst also escaping to somewhere completely new. The adventures are thrilling and keep you hooked. But I did struggle a bit with some of the pacing sometimes, which is more of a me issue!
The romance only gets spicier and hotter throughout this book as the separated main characters find a unique way to keep their fires burning. We see their devotion grow, throughout the tests and challenges they face.
I love how this world is being built, its giving me very Greek mythology vibe with prophecies, gods and monsters and I am here for it. Cannot wait for book three!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Gods, monsters, quests, real human moments, oh, and spice!
Author: @alina_kramer_author Release: HAPPY RELEASE DAY! Series: Star Crossed Crown, book 2
What a wonderful joy it was to be back in the world with the Godslayer and her devoted man, Syran! We begin right where we left off (give or take a couple weeks) after book one in a kingdom that is newly adjusting to working with Demigods AND the Starless (magicless). And while the usurper no longer threatens the throne, villains new and old enter the scene with madness, shadows, and the threat of annihilation.
I had a great time moving through this dark medieval fantasy world filled with magic and new monsters. We get greater world building as Lyanndra travels to her hometown to face not only an ancient divine entity, but her worst shame: her family. It was so lovely getting to see more layers from our stoic FMC. Lyanndra’s words and actions are always intentional and it’s imperative that you keep that in mind. 😉
Meanwhile, Syran has his own mission: to find the weapon said to destroy the ancient monster that threatens to destroy their world. Syran is just so thoughtful and self-reflective. He is eager to make sure his reign is one that is accepting as well as nothing like his father’s and I just loved how much care he took to make sure each person he encountered was seen.
Even during their separation, I never felt like they weren’t continuing to grow closer and stronger together. (The dreams helped 😜). There was quite a lot of character growth and it was just so beautifully done. I was intrigued with the mystery; delighted with the banter; swooning over the yearning and spice; and felt all the emotions from tearing up to celebrating to giggling and kicking my feet. I felt like Alina took care of me as a reader the whole way.
Tropes you may find in MS are mystery, fated mates with choice, medium stakes, simping fire daddy, epic heroine, support/comfort, touch him/her and ☠️, 🔥 the world for him/her, banter, spicy dreams, medium high spice, prophecy, and no cliffhanger (but leaves you excited for what comes next!).
Thank you, Alina, for reaching out and connecting with me. It’s such a joy to arc read your work!
Lyanndra and Syran have enjoyed living together at Nexus for the past few months. They’re really getting to know each other, and they’re certain that their star-crossed bond means they are each other’s other half. Then the earth begins to shake in the south of Alastria. Lyanndra has to leave to hunt a monster hidden inside a mountain in the Southern Caldera. Syran stays behind. His task is to find the one thing that can kill this monstrous deity. In the meantime, there are people who try to force them apart. Will their love be strong enough to survive?
The Midnight Serpent is the second book in the Star Crossed Crown series and is a romantasy set in a medieval world, just like The Godslayer. There are knights in (not so) shining armour, demigod ladies, monstrous beasts, and a quest to save the country. Alina Kramer has done some beautiful worldbuilding that makes you feel as if you’re part of the story, and personally, I wish I never had to leave.
Alina’s writing is impeccable, as always. She writes very lyrically, and as a non-native English speaker, I’ve learned a lot of new words. However, this didn’t slow down my reading in any way. On the contrary, it added to the experience of being in another mystical world.
Another one of Alina’s strengths is turning everything upside down. Just when you think you know where the story is going, there’s a twist or turn that makes you scream in disbelief and hate fictional characters with a passion you didn’t know you had in you.
And speaking of passion, don’t read this book in public if you don’t have a poker face, because it gets hot … a lot 🤭. Let’s just say Lyanndra and Syran haven’t been together that long, and their spark is truly sparking. Yes, even when they’re not exactly in the same space. Intriguing, isn’t it? Go read the book, and you’ll find out how that’s possible.
The Midnight Serpent is a masterfully woven follow-up to The Godslayer, proving that Alina Kramer is a powerhouse in the genre. This sequel captures the high-adventure spirit and world-building depth of a Robert Jordan epic while cranking the ever so smoky romantic heat of the first book up to 11 and ripping off the knob. It is a tale that perfectly balances mystery, betrayal, and ancient secrets with the thrill of a grand, high-stakes adventure.
The story picks up where The Godslayer left off with Lyanndra now preparing for her role as queen-to-be alongside King Syran. Their hard-won peace is shattered by a devastating earthquake in the southern reaches of Alastria: the very place where Lyanndra grew up. When rumors emerge of a colossal creature possibly causing the destruction, Lyanndra takes charge. Wary of leaving the throne unoccupied again, she alone leads a host of knights on a dangerous trek to her homeland to verify the claims of this mysterious beast. This journey forces her to confront her own past while Syran grapples with the weight of his new crown and the search for a weapon that might fell the beast.
Kramer’s writing is fantastic. While this is a romantasy through and through, the world-building is so rich and the stakes are so high that anyone who enjoys a traditional fantasy epic would be daft to skip the series.
If you want a sequel that delivers more high adventure, deep intrigue, and a hero who is as fierce as she is heroic, The Midnight Serpent is a must-read. Alina Kramer has created a world that feels both classic and refreshingly modern, and I’m already looking forward to the next installment!
This book picks up exactly where The Godslayer left off, and I mean exactly. No recap chapters, no info dumps, just straight back into the story as if you never left. I loved that trust in the reader.
Where book one focused heavily on the enemies-to-lovers dynamic, this installment expands the world in meaningful ways. We spend time in a Starless town, learning more about how they live and how deeply divided their world is from the demigods. The added exploration of the demigods’ religious structures was especially fascinating and added layers to a world that already felt rich.
I’ll admit, I was a little worried that once we moved past the true enemies phase, we might lose the banter that made the first book so addictive. Thankfully, that fear was completely unfounded. The banter is still sharp, still clever, and still one of the highlights of the story.
Unlike the first book, which lacked a single, overarching villain, The Midnight Serpent introduces us to one, or at least begins to. We also get deeper insight into several characters who fall squarely into the “love to hate” category, which added tension and complexity to the narrative.
And perhaps my favorite part: no cliffhanger. Instead, the ending cleanly sets the stage for book three without emotional devastation… though I still won’t be waiting patiently for it.
This was a fantastic continuation of the series. Strong character work, expanded worldbuilding, excellent pacing, and just enough setup to leave me eager for what comes next. Highly recommended.
What struck me first about this book was its vulnerability. The emotional openness between the characters is handled with such care that it immediately pulls you in. Watching Lyanndra and Syran grow closer—learning to trust one another and share their deepest secrets—was deeply moving. The yearning between them is intense and beautifully written. Even though they are already together, there is still this constant ache, this longing that makes every interaction feel charged and meaningful. One of the things I appreciated most is how the story balances its seriousness with moments of genuine humor. The stakes are high, the emotions run deep, yet the lighter moments feel natural and well-placed, never undercutting the gravity of the story. The emotional impact hit hard. The yearning alone brought me close to tears, and the character dynamics left a lasting impression. Certain characters tested my patience (Aaro, in particular), while others broke my heart entirely. And then there’s the plot twist. Completely unexpected. I genuinely did not see it coming, and it recontextualized everything in a way that felt both shocking and earned. Alina Kramer delivers a story filled with devotion, strength, and emotional depth. This book stayed with me long after I turned the final page. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
After overcoming their differences, hate, biases, and dangers to be together, Lyanndra and Syran are again forced to be apart because of new dangers that lurk their Kingdom. Prophecies, secret identities, and conspirations threaten their safety. While desperately yearning each other, they most focus on finding a way to save the Kingdom and be together again. Will they survive more secrets?
I loved the first book, and I loved this one! The story is engaging. It keeps you guessing who is who, and what happens next. I have a crush on Lyanndra AND Syran. They are both fenomenal characters. I like how they are portrayed as important figures that reached their position in different ways, and the internal struggle with their traumas and emotions. Their strenght, resilience, and love for each other is admiring. I also enjoyed how well describe are all events, including the action.
The ONLY reasons for 4 stars is not because of the book, but personal preferences. I love Dual POV's, but not every other chapter, and felt that some parts could have been shorter. However, it is still not a long book, and is definitely a book I would RECOMMEND to my friends.
I specially want to thank you Alina Kramer for the opportunity to read the Arc of this amazing book. I look forward to book three!!
Holy smokes!! what a wild ride. We left off in the previous book Ressa being released from a being who will help her get her revenge. Syrian and Lysanndra are in flight mode to figure out where she is and how she escaped. They learn that towns in the southern part of the country have been ravaged by earthquakes and a large roar. Lysanndra knows what it is....and its woken up. Torran tells them of past prophecies and possible connections. Lysanndra knows in her heart she must venture out...she left her family all those years ago and she doesnt know if they live. She feels guilty bc she didnt want to marry the man they arranged for her. She always felt like an outcast. She may not be their blood but they were her family. Torran and Syrian still hunt for answers and they found a blasphamas text from an old god and now they hunt for the fang to stop the beast. Things are not what they seem. There are forces at play to bring forth the prophecy but all Syrian wants is Lysanndra...he would burn the world for her and Lyssandra will stop at nothing to save the people she loves from the awoken beast! Drama, deceit, uncovered truths and death make this book a fabu read! next one please!!
Absolute wild ride from the beginning. So thankful to be apart of the ARC team for TMS ! The Godslayer was a book I couldn’t put down and The Midnight Serpent continued this momentum from the very beginning.
Lyanndra and Syran start their journey in TMS with blissful peace, but alas we know nothing is peaceful forever for our dynamic couple. From a leeching human in the basement to previous hateful lovers, daddy issues, and a monster lurking in the shadows - both of our main characters have their own internal/external battles to contend with. One thing we can say for certain is a love that never waivers
*small quote spoiler*
✨“She is the Godslayer, and I will burn for her.”✨
From the moment you pick this book up you won’t want to put it down until you’re forced because it’s done. Absolutely magnificent writing from such a magnificent author who I have had the pleasure of meeting.
If you’re looking for : ✨Enemies to lovers ✨Fated mates ✨He falls first ✨Touch her and die ✨Touch him and die ✨Secret identity ✨Open door/explicit spice (like, somebody-needs-to-go-to-horny-jail levels of spice, don’t say I didn’t warn you!) ✨My wife ✨Political intrigue ✨Prophecies ✨Mystery ✨A little bit of cosmic horror (as a treat) Then this is your book!!
The Midnight Serpent picks up exactly where the Godslayer left off. Again, the writing is poetic and the plot is enticing and superbly paced with plenty of hints, misleads and subtle foreshadowing to keep it engaging. In the nature of honesty, there were times that felt like they didn't have much sustenance and I was so worried that it would become a "typical" second book where there is build up upon build up but I think the author did an amazing job of not letting that happen and there enough tidbits sprinkled in that it kept me turning pages well into the night. I adored the character development especially the times where the FMC would deep-dive into a justification on why a "villain" was acting the way they were. I relish that relatability. The world-building continued to amaze me with deeper exploration of Alastria and the Starless towns and livelihoods. The Midnight Serpent was a delightful continuation of the Star Crossed Crown Series and while there was no cliff-hanger ending, there is no question that there is enough to leave me waiting for what comes next.
A massive shout-out to Alina Kramer for allowing me to read this early copy.
I absolutely loved how this book picks up right where The Godslayer left off! It jumps straight into the action, and I really appreciated that it skips the recaps. The first book was all about the enemies-to-lovers vibe, but this sequel takes us to exciting new places, like Starless town, and dives deeper into the lives of demigods. The exploration of their complex religious structures really adds a unique flavor to the story.
I was a bit worried that the witty banter would lose its spark once the enemies became partners, but thankfully, it's just as sharp and clever as ever! Plus, the introduction of a clear villain adds some nice depth and complexity to several characters, ramping up the tension in a fun way.
One of my favorite things about this book is that it doesn't leave you hanging with a cliffhanger. Instead, the ending sets everything up nicely for the next installment. Overall, it's a fantastic continuation of the series! With strong character development, rich worldbuilding, and perfect pacing, I can't recommend it enough!!

The second installment of The Godslayer further develops the FMC’s background, finally giving us a clearer understanding of the past behind the female warrior. I especially appreciated how the world-building unfolds alongside the plot, with subtle foreshadowing that later proves meaningful. While this is still very much a love story first—with plenty of spice woven throughout (literally giving meaning to wet dreams)—it moves in tandem with the external conflict rather than stalling for it.
It’s rare for a book to hold my attention on every page (I have a short attention span), but this one maintains momentum through consistent action and purposeful scenes. The pacing kept me engaged from start to finish.
I also loved the subversion of traditional gender roles: a capable female warrior paired with a male royal. Lyanndra is never framed as a damsel in distress, and the MMC respects her strength while still allowing space for her sensitivity and vulnerability. She is both strong and soft, and the story honors that balance.
If you enjoy fairytale-inspired stories where love ultimately triumphs, this installment is well worth the read.
First, huge thank you to Alina for a copy of this ebook!
Now… this was so good. I live for a bada$$ FMC and an MMC that is an absolute simp for her. The longing and yearning for each other while apart was *chefs kiss* so good!
Trying to fight the bond was not working so they succumbed to it and boy do they have chemistry! And what more can I want from a romantasy other epic battle. She gives her all in battle and when they work together it’s an amazing fight scene.
I am an official member of the Ressa Hate Kingdom and the Order of Readers Against Aaro. Lmao friggin Ressa and Aaro! I love the way Alina has these side characters and their roles in the story. Let me know how you feel about them after you read it! 😂
I look forward to book 3!
“When I look at you, I see the moon. Even when you’re just a shadow of yourself, the tides still bow to you. The night holds its breath when you speak. Fu€k the Celestial Gods. You are of the heavens, Lyanndra, and you are the only star I need worship.” 😭😭
“Even if Lyanndra does not believe it now, I will do as I vowed. I will shoulder her burdens. I will show her that she’s worthy. I will make her my queen.”
This book picks up right where book 1-The Godslayer left off. I jumped right in! I did not want to put it down.
The relationship between the FMC, Leaanndra and the MMC, Syran is such a healthy one in this book. The unbreakable bond they have built, along with trust and a love that is unconditional and accepting regardless of what has happened to them is a welcome change from most stories written in this genre.
I really enjoyed seeing new villians, and old ones that you love to hate, new towns, more trouble just when you think things are settling down and of course seeing more of Barra!
The continued immersive world-building, layered plot, new characters, twists and spice throughout the story kept me engaged and truly yearning for the next exciting or shocking thing.
While this book does not end on a cliffhanger. It does leave you ready for the next chapter in the story.
I loved this book even more than the first one and I can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you Alina Kramer for the opportunity to read this copy is advance of the release and allowing me to write an honest review.
The Star Crossed Crown series continues with another fast-paced, action packed, spice fuelled, dream of a book. Seriously, I can't get enough of this story or these characters.
The Midnight Serpent begins where The Godslayer leaves off. Lyanndra and Syran are picking up the pieces from the end of book one, both emotional and literal. We meet some new characters and say hi to a few old ones. Ressa's back, of course, causing more mayhem and making everyone's life all the more difficult. As if they don't have anything else to worry about!
We dive deeper into the backstories of our main characters and we get to watch them as they struggle through relatable self-doubt, family drama, and uncertainty. These characters are so well written it genuinely feels like I know them.
Second books can be difficult. They carry the expectations of the first, and hope for the next. Kramer manages this perfectly. I predict this series will be the next big thing in Bookland, and I can't wait to see what's in store next!
This starts where the first book ends. With Ressa in the dungeons. There is a mysterious glowing green eyes that is there. As the story progresses, there is a warning that Ressa is gone but how? And then there is quakes in our MFC home town... Which then poses some interesting battles in itself and you learn more about her history. As the story does progress, you lean more about the connection between the bond... There is spice in this book BTW. Some of it is spicy for sure... and the dream spice is interesting. Of course there is a big battle and some things go down. You learn more about the prophecy. At the end, it leaves on a cliff hanger.... I can't wait to see what the 3rd book pulls out and to see what happens next. I hope our Godslayer still kicks butt after everything... And I'm curious if book 3 will talk more about the creature that is in this book.... I would love to know more about it. (hint hint to the author).
Overall, I enjoyed this book and read it in 1 day. Thank you to the author for working with me.
Thank you so much Alina for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team and read this wonderful piece of fantasy.
The Midnight Serpent will make you feel all the feelings, anger, excitement, happiness, rage, and a little bit of sadness too. The events pick up pretty much right after the ending of the Godslayer (book one). The author does an amazing and thorough job of building an immersive world with lore and history, while building connections with the characters we get to know, and watching them grow together. I love Lyanndra and Syran’s relationship and the connection they have, as well is the undeniable force pulling them together.
The ushum was scary and creepy. Barra is the best. Read the book. It’s worth it. The author helped inspire me to do art again, after a long time of doing none at all. So that should tell you everything you need to know.
Also.. all the hate in the world to Aaro (so glad he’s dead) and fuck Ressa.
Until the stars fall.

“i will be whatever you ask of me. i am yours, in every misfortune. in every miracle. in every lifetime. in every constellation.”
another 5 star read as we finish the middle of this trilogy from alina. it’s truly is the witcher meets elden ring but…hornier! :D
i cannot stop myself from devouring alina’s words. there’s mystery and intrigue to keep you enticed, there’s hints and subtle foreshadowing to make you think you know what’s going on…yeah, this is why i love fantasy.
the shining star throughout this series remains lyanndra’s and syran’s relationship. their devotion to each other is mesmerizing. the way they both see the broken, rotted pieces of the other and love not only despite those pieces, but because of them…CHEF’S KISS Y’ALL. CHEF’S MF KISS.
lyanndra if ur reading this i’m free on thursday could u pls come run me thru with ur greatsword thx luv u xx
I never know what is happening in an Alina Kramer book until it is far too late. The Midnight Serpent destroyed my confidence at every turn, and the twists hit so hard that my gasps were loud and uncontrollable.
I formally apologize to Queen Alina herself for doubting her halfway through. I should have known better. Well played.
My hatred for a certain character grew with every page, only to be redirected toward someone new who still did not suffer nearly enough. The emotional manipulation was cruel, intentional, and brilliant.
And the writing. Some passages were lyrical and haunting, almost poetic in the quiet, shadowed moments. The atmosphere was thick with tension, the pacing relentless, and the payoff devastating.
This book does not just surprise you. It waits. It watches. And then it strikes when you least expect it.
I really enjoyed picking back up with Lyanndra and Syran following the events of book 1 The Godslayer. I found the first part of the book a little slow to get in to personally but it soon picked up.
Particularly loved that we learn so much more about Lyanndra’s background and what led to her becoming a knight. She and Barra of course continue to be the stars of the show, despite Syran being the king.
We were also given someone new to hate, somebody to mourn, a mysterious stranger and left with some questions around a prophecy..
I’ll be very keen to continue the series with book 3 ✨
Favourite quote: “When I look at you, I see the moon. Even when you’re just a shadow of yourself, the tides still bow to you. The night holds its breath when you speak. Fuck the Celestial Gods. You are of the heavens, Lyanndra, and you are the only star I need worship.”
✨✨✨✨✨✨ The Midnight Serpent starts off strong and sucks you into the world. You will be yelling at the characters, gasping, and might even shed a tear or two. The MMC Syran is all a girl would want. He is the epitome of touch her and die and burn it all down for his love kind of guy. He loves fierce and deeply. Move over Rowan and Zade because Syran is the new book husband in town. The FMC Lyanndra is literally a Godslayer Queen. She too loves fierce and with her whole heart. She is strong and refuses to let her past define her future. The lengths these two would go for each other knows no bounds. They are connected souls and the way they love each other through the "darkness" touches my soul. The story is not without betrayal and wow did not see a few of them coming. There is a reason the arc readers have an I hate Ressa and Aaro fan club. The world building, the characters, the spice and the dream scenes are absolutely legendary. Did I mention the dream scenes hot. The author's words flow like magic and will have you falling in love with what I call the Godslayer universe. The Midnight Serpent feels like home in a way you don't want to say goodbye. "Until the stars fall." Thank you Alien Kramer for the ARC copy and allowing myself and many others to fall in love with this series.
Book two of the Star Crossed Crown series did not disappoint! 🐍✨
This medieval fantasy delivered some serious yearning, plenty of angst and actual tears 😭
If you love a fierce FMC, a MMC who would burn the world for her, intense battle scenes, and mythical creatures beyond imagination, then this one’s for you ⚔️❤️🔥
The plot twists gave me whiplash and honestly, the trust issues only got worse 🤣
Huge thank you to Alina for this wonderful ARC 💌
“I am the Godslayer. I will not falter. I will not fall. And I certainly will not give up and fucking die”
“There is no power in the fucking stars that will ever stop me from loving you”
“I am hers, completely, without question, down to the stardust in my veins”
Book two does not skip a beat. This is a solid enemies to lovers series with a badass female lead. Where the first book was more centered around the two main characters and building the backbone of the story, this book introduces us to some new characters, further backstories, all while knocking us around a delicious twisty plot that will have you going from “omg awe” to…”WTAF” to… “OMG” again. It is definitely spicy. Much more than book one but still in all the right ways. This book has action, longing, heartache and a sweet MMC to swoon over.
Thank you Alina for this ARC! Oh my god... where do I even begin? Wow. This carries on right from where The Godslayer ended so no messing about!
If you love a fiery FMC, a loved up MMC, touch her and 💀, touch him and 💀!!! Then PLEASE read this series. This is fast becoming a new favourite of mine. Alina's writing is gripping, flows so well and just keeps me on my toes! I really, really enjoyed getting to know more of Lyanndra's past and Syran's devotion to her is everythinggggg 🤌🏼 I gasped many times and was emotional too 🥲 this book just has everything I want in a fantasy read.
