A Crown of Light and Shadow: A Spicy Fae Romantasy

Rate this book
A sexy, action-packed, fantasy romance from Andrea Rose.

Magic brought them together. Desire might tear them apart.

Aaran
She was supposed to be a means to an end.
A human. Fragile. Untrained. Temporary.

Instead, Harper is fire wrapped in defiance, drawing me closer with every breath, every glance, every reckless act of bravery.

The prophecy claims her power will save us. But it says nothing about the way she unravels me or how every moment at her side would test my control.

Dark magic hunts us. Death shadows our path. And still, I crave her.

Harper
This prince from a world shadowed in myth and doomed by a false queen claims only I can help him. Magic hums beneath Aaran’s skin. His gaze lingers too long. He makes promises I don’t understand, but long for anyway.

He saved my mother’s life. How can I deny him anything?

Now I’m in a world of magic and monsters, bound to a man who watches me like I already belong to him, and fighting a desire that grows stronger with every step we take.

Saving his world was never part of my plan.
Neither was wanting him.

But the closer we get to the witch queen, the harder it becomes to tell which will destroy us first—the war we’re walking into, or the desire neither of us can escape.

A sizzling romantasy where fate binds—and passion burns. A Crown of Light and Shadow blends romance, adventure, and Celtic myth into a book you won’t be able to put down. Read now on Kindle Unlimited.

This is a fun new romantic fantasy series from Andie Fenichel. I love her imagination and this is a great new adventure. Harper Craig is an ordinary woman who procrastinates just like all of us and seems to be a little scattered. While finally getting around to renewing her driver's license she ends up seeing time stand still, witnesses the opening of a portal and seeing the most beautiful male walk out of it towards her. She knows instantly he's not human with his pointed ears and huge sword on his back! He insists she come with him and of course she doesn't comply. This starts a chain of events that changes her life completely. This was so much fun. I can't wait for the next story.

The Prophesy has been finally been found: Three human women and the sons of Riordan will open the Watchers Gate that has magic inside to stop the evil Witch Queen. Aaran Riordan is the crown prince of Domhan and he's been charged by the oracle to find one of the three human women, Harper Craig. He expects she'll drop everything and follow him back through the gate. He is quickly disabused of that thought. He refuses to leave her alone and discovers her mother, her only family, is dying of cancer. He figures he might as well heal her mother with the magic he has left since he's failing his mission anyway. Witnessing the magic and it's toll on him she's amazed by her mother's miraculously healing. She decides the least she can do is to drive him to another gate that will take him home. During the journey Harper begins to believe his story to care. Along the way she discovers a strength inside her she never knew she had. This story is not to be missed.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. I also own a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is book one in new romantic fantasy series from Andrea Rose aka Andie Fenichel.

The FMC is Harper Craig. She’s sure she’s just a regular, run of the mill woman. She goes to the DMV one day to renew her driver's license and witnesses time stop, a portal opening, and watches as a Fae man with pointed ears and massive sword strapped to his back exits the portal! He is a take charge type and tells her she must go with him, telling her she’s a part of a prophecy. She initially refuses, but when he finds out her mother is dying of cancer, he heals her, which serves to convince her to assist him. The fact that she questions the call to go with him, and resists it, and shows trepidation makes it seem much more realistic and plants the seeds to make her transformation feel very authentic.

The MMC is Crown Prince of Domhan, Aaran Riordan. The Oracle has told him to find one of the three human women, Harper Craig, who will help fulfill a prophecy. . He expects she'll drop everything and follow him back through the gate. He fails to convince her, breaks the rules and really starts to feel like he is failing in his mission. Aaran is a golden retriever type hero, very loving and very strong. Watching him struggle with humanity and his assumptions added depth to him, and watching his transformation to embrace openness and a different (human) perspective was great.

The story is a beautiful combination of intrigue, fantasy, and romance, there are plenty of plot twists, and the pacing bounces between action and emotional depth in a way that kept me flipping pages to see what happened next.

A Crown of Light and Shadow
Andrea Rose
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Harper
They say elves don't exist, but I beg to differ. Especially when they leap out of portals in the middle of the DMV, looking like the God of thunder himself and claiming that I'm destined to save his world. Yet here we are and it did happen.
How on earth am I supposed to fight an Elven witch queen and save Aaran's world?

Aaran
My mission was supposed to be simple bring Harper back to Domhan as it was foretold. But when she says she's not going to help, I end up breaking the rules and heal her dying Mother.
Finally she has agreed to come, but at what cost remains to be seen. Harper has magic, strong magic, but it lies dormant in her. I can only pray that what the Oracle foretold is correct because if she can't unlock that magic, neither of us will survive this ordeal.

A.S. Fenichel is absolutely incredible. This is one of my go to authors and this story is why. This author can write in any genre she chooses and it comes out shinning like the brightest star. There were so many things going on in this book, but they flowed together to make the perfect story. The main characters are perfect and Harper was one tough cookie. I felt like I was traveling along with them and watching everything unfold with the utmost precision and never missing a beat. Ms. Fenichel you have litterly blown me away once again and that is no easy feat.

⭐️⭐️⭐️. 25 Golden retriever fae prince meets snarky Jersey girl!

Dual POV follows Aaran and Harper after he and his brothers come to Earth to retrieve three women destined to save their cursed realm. No female fae have been born for decades, and extinction looms. Harper takes the revelation that she is one third of the prophesied saviors remarkably well. Once Aaran heals her terminally ill mother, she leaves Earth behind to face a witch queen and her demons.

The quest is clear and fast-paced, and I genuinely enjoyed the image of Harper roaming the fae realm in jeans and a Mickey Mouse T-shirt. Still, I missed more tension and emotional depth. Several scenes felt rushed and their repeated “I love you, but we have no future” grew a bit tiresome. Insta-love is simply not my trope.

No distinctive MMC scent noted.

I am intrigued enough to continue, mostly in hopes that Liam proves less vanilla.

If you like:
• Portal fantasy with a straightforward quest
• Sunshine MMC energy vs. snarky FMC
• Quick pacing

Not for you if you:
• Prefer slow burn and emotional complexity
• Dislike insta-love

3.25 stars. Light, enjoyable romantasy with room to deepen.

This was a lovely start to this epic journey. Harper and Aaran were a nice couple with a slow burn. There was a lot crammed into this story. At times, I felt that things moved forward and progressed faster than what I would have liked at times, but the story still felt cohesive and engaging.

I loved how Harper felt so normal. It was easy to relate to how she felt so out of place and “normal”, but it was her small acts of kindness and desire to care for others was her greatest strength. I thought that was beautiful and moving.

Aaran is a strong and loving hero. It’s cute how he makes many assumptions at first but then is quick to be open and change perspective. He is quick to care and heal. The only annoying thing about him is that he states repeatedly that he wishes he could send Harper back to her home. While it shows his desire to care for her, it gets a bit repetitive. Other than that, he was a fine hero.

I am engrossed in the tale and look forward to seeing how the three brothers’ tales come together.

So the first chapter got me completely hooked. It is a fast moving story and obviously the first in a series. You can tell the main characters start having feelings for each other pretty quickly and some of their interactions are just comical, especially those opening parts at the DMV. Aaron is just so sweet, patient, and attentive to Harper which I feel directly matches her attitude towards him. There's not a lot of whining or the "I can't do it" attitude from the FMC which makes it so much better. Aaran allows Harper to feel her magic and just supports from the side. It will be interesting to see the following brothers and their savior women in the following books for sure! The slow burn is good and when the spice hits, it's very welcome between the two characters. Also, can we just have a standing ovation for the side characters, including our favorite little dwarf man? Such a gentleman! Thanks for the good and fast read!

This was a solid 3.5/5 for me. I like the story line, but it felt super rushed in many places but also dragged in others. I also felt like there were missing points that needed to be made within the plot itself that would’ve helped the storyline. I wasn’t a huge fan of how things ended, only because it felt like it ended so abruptly. Also, I felt like the more intimate parts were oddly written, but that was just me.

I do enjoy the FMC and MMC. Harper is very relatable and although I normally enjoy my MMCs to be dark and broody, I found that Aaran being a bit of a cinnamon roll fit well with Harper’s easygoing personality.

Also, my favorite character was definitely Fancor. He gave me Gimli vibes and I loved his banter.

It’ll be interesting to see where the other two brothers go in this series.

Thank you to Andrea Rose, publishers and Booksirens for the ARC!

This is my first fantasy book by this author, as I normally read her historical stories. I fancied a change, and I’m glad I did.

The heroine, Harper, is a normal, hardworking girl who is easy to relate to. She has had a hard life, with a sick mother to care for, yet she keeps going through the motions, until she is suddenly confronted by an elf wielding a sword who insists she must go with him to fulfil a prophecy and save his realm.

This is a good sized story, with plenty of action, drama, and emotion. I really enjoyed the concept and the world that was created. There were a couple of small sections that felt slightly rushed or as though something was missing, but not enough to detract from the overall experience.

I became fully engrossed in the outcome and read it over two days because I didn’t want to put it down. A strong start to what I hope will be a wonderful series.

This was a really easy read, apart from some of the names that I'm definitely saying wrong in my head! I really did enjoy it, I had to sit and think about what to review it - I have decided on 3.5 which stars don't really show do they...

I liked the premise, I liked the characters. But I just wanted a bit more, a bit more world building, a bit more from the characters they seemed to move on in their emotions very quickly and some important parts felt a little rushed through.

But overall an enjoyable easy read, and I know some people will love it, and they wouldn't want all that extra stuff I'm missing.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily thank you :)

ARC Review – A Crown of Light and Shadow by Andrea Rose
Thank you to the author for the ARC.
I was really drawn in by the premise and overall plot of this story. The central idea is strong and intriguing, and I enjoyed seeing how the main conflict unfolded.
However, I found the execution a bit rushed. The character development felt limited, which made it harder to form a strong emotional connection. I also would have loved deeper world-building and more immersive description to fully bring the setting to life.
Overall, this is a story with a compelling concept, but I was hoping for more depth in both the characters and the world.

I found myself greatly intrigued by this book and am eagerly anticipating continuing this romantasy series. I enjoyed Harper and Aaran's story. I thought that these characters had some solid layers, and I felt they were very likable and easy to care about. The world building was quite good which made it very easy for me to picture it in my mind and become deeply immersed in it. The storying itself was easy to engage with, and it held my interest firmly. The combination of romance, fantasy, emotion, drama, action, heat, heart, twists, whimsy and intensity was smartly put together into a truly enticing tale that wove a powerful spell over me.

Loved this story and can't wait for the next. Harper is just going about her life when a portal opens and an elf steps through. He tells her that he heard her soul song and that she has to go with him. Of course she runs. Finally, Harper agrees to go with him, and they have quite the adventure. Aaron is an elf from another world and needs Harper to help rid his world of the Witch Queen. Harper knows she is no one special and can't understand why she would be picked. She shows her bravery as they journey. Will they be able to complete their quest?

Harper goes on a wild journey to help people and save a world. She is part of a prophecy and I loved how her elf warrior Aaran burst into a New Jersey DMV to bring her to his world. And how she refused because she was almost to the head of the line to renew her driver's license. Practicalities, Aaran, practicalities. I can't wait to see how his two younger brothers succeed in their missions to retrieve the other two human saviors.

This is the beginning of a new series and there is not wrap up at the end of this book. That being said, I was rapidly pulled into this story and powered through to the end even as I came to realize that I would be waiting for the next book to continue the story. Well written by an author I read in other genres. Good world building, great characters and some steam. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the rest of the series.

This is a cute story that takes you away on a journey to a far away land where me meet new characters to love (and hate).

I love Harper's heart.

This doesn't end on a total cliffhanger but the story isn't over and continues in the next book which I've already added to my TBR list.

Just a cute side note* I've read a lot of books but this was the first one that had my last name for a character!

This is one of those books that you'll snatch any chance to sneak in a few more pages. I love Harper's Jersey Girl moments along with her kindness and determination to do the right thing; she's tough and sweet at the same time. Aaran is that beautiful balance of trying to meet the "tough guy" expectations and wanting to be everything for his love. Fantastic characters and intense adventure! Can't wait for Book 2!

Interesting story, very enjoyable

Great characters and world building with all the strange creatures. I have trouble (not just in this book either) with the FMC always so deprecating and insecure. I’ve started many adventures in life and always dove in, never questioning if I could do it. I just did what was needed. So, it’s hard for me to associate with these females who are unsure about …. whatever. Regardless, I enjoyed the story.

If you love a golden retriever hero, a confused chosen one heroine, and a prophecy this is a great book. Aaran and Harper are a great couple and work together through the challenges in the book. The beginning of the book is hilarious and it just gets better with each page turn. The secondary characters bring the book to life. I look forward to what the rest of the books in the series will bring.

I’m excited to get the brothers stories and to see how the trilogy unfolds. I am new reader to Andrea Rose books and I am glad i discovered her.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the others to see how it all plays out. However there were a few parts that seemed to lag and a lot of side characters to keep up with. It took me a little longer to read it due to the lagging parts but all in all, I do want to finish the series to see how it ends.
