FINAL DUTY

Rate this book
No one cares about life until it’s too late.
Imagine drowning in your own sadness, screaming silently into the void, but no one notices. No one hears. Not until the echo of the gunshot rips through the air, sharp and final. Only then do they stop, their laughter caught in their throats, their smiles fading. Only then do they look back, piecing together the fragments they ignored, whispering “Why didn’t we see it?”
But by then, it’s over. You’re gone.
Why is it that life only matters in hindsight? Why do people wait to care, to listen, to love—when it could have made all the difference while you were still here?

For 28 years, I kept my stories to myself, using them as a way to navigate life’s challenges and moments of hope. Writing has always been my passion—a way to dive into the raw, unfiltered truths most people can’t bear to face. Now, I’m sharing those stories with the world.

My words are not for the faint of heart. They delve deep into the human experience, exploring the darkness we often shy away from and the resilience it takes to rise above it. Every story I write comes with a trigger warning advisory, because these are tales that confront pain, loss, and the harsh realities of life head-on. But they also reveal the strength, hope, and transformation that can emerge from the depths of despair.

Inspired by real-life experiences and blended with dark fiction, my stories are emotional and gripping, shining a light on themes like resilience, redemption, and the complexities of human nature. Each word is a reflection of the truths I’ve encountered and the imagination that shapes them.

If you’re ready to journey through the darkest corners of the human soul and discover the light that can emerge, my stories are for you. Welcome to my world—a place where fiction feels real, and every word leaves a lasting impact.

I look forward to connecting with you—as an avid reader, writer, and fitness enthusiast—to share stories, inspiration, and a passion for growth and transformation.

I have the audio version from the author and found this book to be absolutely amazing. The narrator did it justice. I read along with it.

Final Duty ripped my heart out of my chest in the first few pages. For anyone who knows someone who serves or has served our country and all the mental health that comes along with it, this book will touch your heart. It is a great mental health book and how it affects everyone. It also shows how one person can make a difference in many people’s lives in both good and bad ways. I thought it was amazing.

I enjoyed Final Duty. A soldier takes his life when he finds out his wife took his 2 children and left him for another man. His best friend, brother in combat, wants someone to pay and plots his revenge, he wants to take everything away from them, just like they took everything from Scott. A quick read and I didn't see the twist coming!

I listened to the audio book and honestly had to look up if Ray Romano was reading it because I wasn't paying attention when he said his name. He has a voice doppelganger! This book was definitely dark and depressing. The words were almost poetic which I really appreciated to describe the pain and trauma ripping apart the characters. It just had a bit too much repetition for me. The same sentences were repeated a couple times each chapter it seemed, but I do understand it was coming from a place of trauma.

We start the book with a desperate man to put an end to his depression. His "brother" in the army with him tries to join him on his ride to the hospital and be with him as they worked on him. From there a depressive rage forms in his body to avenge the dark thoughts that caused his friend to take such drastic measures.

We never truly comprehend the motivations behind someone's decision to end their own life. Even when a note is left behind, there are questions that will forever remain unanswered. No one can fully grasp the pain others experience after the loss of a friend, spouse, or sibling. This book delves into the aftermath of such a tragic event, exploring the emotions that follow.

Imagine drowning in sadness so deep no one even notices. You're screaming inside, hoping someone will care enough to look closer, but they don't. Not until it's too late. After the echo of a gunshot slices through the silence, suddenly everyone wants to understand what they ignored. But by then, you're already gone. Below the Surface is a chilling and emotional gut-punch that asks: why do people wait to love, to listen, to care?

Spillin’ the Book Tea:
Real. Raw. Gut-wrenching. This book hits with zero warning and all impact. I was tearing up at the forward, and it didn’t let up from there. Tina S Transformation doesn’t need 400 pages to break you down and build you back up. She does it in just over an hour. The grief, the isolation, the anger, it’s all there, and it’s done in a way that makes you feel seen. This one took my heart and mind on a journey I didn’t expect, but I’m glad I went. There’s something deeply personal in these pages that lingers long after it’s over. Thank you to Tina S Transformation for the ALC and the opportunity to provide this candid review!

The Vibes It Brings:
💔 Emotional gut-check
🧠 Mental health reflection
🌧️ Grief, loss, and silent struggles
🕳️ Existential weight in short form
📖 Short, impactful, unforgettable

Narration:
Dave Gunter handled this emotional minefield with care. His performance is understated but deeply effective, letting the weight of the words do the work. He didn’t overplay it, which made it feel even more real. For such an emotionally intense book, he delivered exactly what it needed.

TL;DR:
Below the Surface is a short, powerful dive into the moments people ignore until it’s too late. Emotionally heavy but necessary. The kind of book that doesn’t just make you feel—it makes you think. Recommended if you're ready for a hard-hitting one-sitting read that might leave you staring at the wall afterward.

Tina Transformation’s Final Duty is an emotionally intense and deeply moving story that explores the silent struggles of PTSD and the devastating impact of being unheard. The book delivers a raw, unfiltered look at mental health, grief, and the importance of compassion—made even more essential by reading the forward.

While heavy and emotionally challenging, the writing is powerful, and the message lingers long after the last page. A must-read for those who appreciate deeply reflective, thought-provoking stories.

I started this one knowing absolutely nothing about it..... Thankful it was book 1 because I wants paying attention until I was 1/2 way through that this might be a series. 🤔 I hate when I question it and I'm already deeply invested.....
It's packed with a punch. Short: yes, quick chapters: definitely, different POV: my fave, dark betrayal and the sweetness of vengeance: oh yeah!. I am anxious to jump into book 2. I love Tina's writing. I find it easy to read, a smooth flow, and before you know it you're finishing the book.

Heart-wrenching, dark, couldn’t put down!

I started reading Final Duty last night and couldn’t put it down. It’s raw, real, and emotional. The events, as they unfold take you through grief, anger and resolve. I was able to envision each scene and feel the antagonist pain and anger. It was a quick read that keeps you on your toes needing to know more. Cant wait to read more from this author.

Final Duty was an enjoyable, quick read. I finished it in one sitting while still managing to stay productive with my other responsibilities. One of the male characters took me by surprise, though I won’t mention any names to avoid spoiling anything. There were a couple of unexpected twists throughout the story. If you enjoy shorter reads or are looking for a new series to dive into, give this one a try.

Final Duty completely gripped me from start to finish. The writing is sharp and emotional, the pacing flawless, and the characters so real they stayed with me long after I finished. I listened on Audible and loved how the narration brought every moment to life—the intensity, the heartbreak, the humanity of it all. It’s rare to find a story that hits every note this perfectly. A powerful, unforgettable read that I highly recommend.

⚠️ Warning: If you can't handle the truth of a soldier's demise, proceed with caution.

What a masterpiece. The military and the trauma that members go through. Always remember, you will never know the extent of what a soldier is thinking. Stop thinking that you do.

This read makes you think. Where are we when the ones we love are drowning? Are we helping them, or are we the ones causing them the extra pain. A story provided amongst the backdrop of a soldier going through something unspeakable. It hurt deep.

The truth in Tina's words is soul touching.

From the first page until the last the emotional toll of realism, agony and the look inside a soldiers mind is absolutely perfect.

The weight of this read is heavy, but magnificent.

I think I'm in Awe over this book. It was a very truthfully written story about the bonds and brotherhood that comes along with military life.
Donovan best friend Scott ended his life, and he vowed to do right by Scott and protect what he loved more than anything.
Highly recommend this book.
