This is THEE only book where the spicy scenes have lived in my head for weeks after 🥵 I loved the relationships in this book. The friendship between Tove and Brenn felt like true girlhood. I loved the comedic relief with the stylists. Wyrd of Skulda was beautifully written and genuinely a fun, easy read. I can’t wait for moreeee

Let me start by saying I had really high hopes going into this book, because I am a huge fan of mythology, fantasy, and romantasy. Unfortunately, this book was not for me.

First, I really struggled with the world building. I never felt like I got a clear understanding of the world this story takes place in. Even by the end, we don’t really learn how the characters’ powers work or what their limits are. I was also left with constant questions about the structure of the world itself. For example, modern conveniences like microwaves and blow dryers exist, yet the primary method of travel is still horseback. Details like that made it difficult for me to fully settle into the setting.

The other thing that prevented me from getting into the book was the lack of lasting stakes. Problems often seemed to resolve quickly once they appeared. Brenn gaining control of her powers, for instance, happens largely through a three-month time jump rather than being explored on the page. Because of that, much of the story felt more focused on the “spicy” scenes between Brenn and the love interest than on developing the larger plot.

All that being said, I do think there are readers who would enjoy this book more than I did—particularly those who prefer their romantasy to lean more toward spice than plot

The Wyrd of Skulda by J. Bellante Ward is an ambitious fantasy novel that blends classic epic fantasy elements with strong Norse-inspired mythology and themes of fate, destiny, and identity. Set in the dark and divided realm of Orlov, the story follows Brenn Skulda, an ordinary elf whose quiet life is shattered when she discovers she is tied to an ancient prophecy and destined to become one of the powerful Norns — mystical weavers of time itself.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its worldbuilding. Ward creates a vivid contrast between the shadowed Kingdom of Myrkar and the radiant Light Kingdom of Lysafar, giving the story a cinematic feel that fantasy readers will easily sink into. The mythology surrounding the Tree of Askari and the manipulation of time adds depth and intrigue, making the world feel larger than the immediate conflict. Fans of high fantasy with magical lore, prophetic destinies, and richly imagined kingdoms will likely find a lot to enjoy here.
Brenn is a relatable protagonist because she begins as someone uncertain of her place in the world. Her growth from an ordinary elf into someone burdened with immense responsibility feels earned, and her internal struggle between embracing her fate or resisting it gives the novel emotional weight. The supporting cast, especially Prince Runier and Brenn’s companions, help balance the darker themes with moments of loyalty, wonder, and hope.
The pacing occasionally slows under the weight of exposition and lore-heavy passages, particularly in the middle sections, but readers who enjoy immersive fantasy worlds may see this as part of the experience rather than a flaw. The novel also leans heavily into familiar fantasy tropes — chosen-one prophecy, light versus darkness, magical kingdoms — though it presents them with enough sincerity and mythological flavor to remain engaging.
Overall, The Wyrd of Skulda is a promising and imaginative start to what appears to be a larger fantasy saga. It will appeal most to readers who enjoy epic fantasy adventures filled with magic, destiny, and Norse-inspired storytelling. While not entirely groundbreaking, it delivers an entertaining and emotionally driven journey with strong worldbuilding and an intriguing mythological foundation.

I received an advance reader copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.
This book is such a fun, LAYERED read, I genuinely couldn’t put it down. At its core is the FMC Brenn’s journey to accept her identity as a Norn, but this isn’t just a single storyline book. Woven alongside the Nordic fantasy is the found-family dynamic between Brenn, Tove, and Wolf, alongside Rune, Sev, and Aleks. You’ll absolutely find book besties here.
The romance between Brenn and Rune is beautifully done. Rune falls first, while Brenn is more guarded, always putting others before herself. It’s a dynamic that feels authentic, emotional, and perfectly aligned with who she is as a character. Their relationship builds in a way that feels earned and fulfilling.
And the spice? Incredible. Rune is everything you want in a book boyfriend: confident, fiercely protective, an exceptional leader… and very swoon-worthy behind closed doors (or, yes, on horseback!! LOL- sorry SPOILER). The balance between intensity and heart makes him unforgettable.
The writing is vivid and immersive; I felt completely transported to Lysafar, and the challenges faced kept me on the edge of my seat. We do get a HEA in book one, but I’m still already desperate to know more about the other Norns and what happens next in this series.

The Wyrd of Skulda is a beautiful fantasy that pulls you into a world shaped by magic, and the weight of choice. J. does an incredible job building a setting that feels , with a quiet intensity that keeps you hooked and wanting more.

The characters are where this story truly shines. They are flawed, emotional, and human. Their relationships give the story real depth, making it more than just a fantasy, but a journey of friendships and romance.

The writing is immersive without feeling heavy, striking a perfect balance between detail and readability. It’s the kind of book that draws you in slowly and makes you want more.

If I had any constructive criticism it would be that some scenes were more drawn out and that modern technology that was present was removed as it doesn’t fit in the world my brain built while reading this great book. I will say that these things were easy to look past as it wasn’t a common thing being referenced.

I loved this book and can’t wait for the second one!

After being in a reading slump for over a year, this book pulled me right out of it.

This book has everything you’re looking for. Friendships, found family, banter, magic, enemies?, kingdoms, spice, and my favorite part, a female lead character that’s over the age of 18. Brenn herself is a revelation: complex, resolute, and achingly vulnerable. She is no distant mythic figure, but a fully realized heroine whose struggles feel intimate and universal. Watching her wrestle with what must be and what might yet be changed is both devastating and exhilarating. Once I started this book it was so hard to put down. I cannot wait for the second book to see what mischief and mayhem my favorite characters get into. Check it out!

Dystopian, urban-like fantasy with rich Norse mythology woven throughout. This book delivers the perfect blend of modern edge and fantasy immersive world building.

Brenn, our FMC, quickly discovers her hidden powers (greater gifts) and is pushed into a journey that forces her to find both the Past and Present in order to save her realm. Alongside her is Trove, her fiercely loyal, stubborn, and unapologetically savage best friend who never lets anything slide. Completing their trio is Wolf, a revered and feared warrior… just not by them.

When Wolf’s temporary betrayal sets off a chain reaction, Brenn is pushed closer to the fate she never saw coming.

Packed with unexpected twists, tension, and unforgettable characters, this story will leave you desperate for the next book.

Could not recommend this book enough! J. Bellante Ward has a true talent when it comes to story lines. You can feel the emotions of the characters and get engulfed in their lives and drama. The use of imagery is phenomenal and makes you craving more. I would read in between patients and was eager to get back to it during lunch and when my day ended. Great job and cannot wait for book #2!

Absolutely love this story. Amazing plot of a woman discovering her real destiny on a journey with her two besties. Some enemies to lovers going on. There is spice just enough though not over done. There is a cliffhanger but not as hard as onyx storm. Can’t wait for the second book. Love this author can’t wait to see all she makes for the future.

I loved it and cannot wait for the next one. This was my first fantasy genre and I was mixed about reading it but wanted to read something fun instead of crime novels my book club always picks. Her characters are fun and sexy! I would read at night and want to stop at the end of a chapter but it was like a cliff hanger so I kept reading! Great job J Ward!!

I immediately fell for the fates theme with the Norns and the lord of the ring vibes with the elves, with a modern day touch.

You instantly fall for these characters and a few of them leave you with the desire to know more about them. Which is a good thing, given this is an incomplete 4 book series - hopefully we have the opportunity with the next few books!

Brenn and Rune - yes, yes, yes!

I adore the way J. Bellante makes me immediately fall in love with every single character. I mean Aleks the most but still! The shift from the traditional male dominated norse mythology is a welcome change. Also, I now am a one horse trophe girlie. 😍😍😍
