When loyalty becomes a cage, love becomes the key.

JJ
I’ve spent years holding on to a man who barely held my hand.
I keep hoping my loyalty will mean something—that maybe one day, he’ll choose me.
But when I meet Miles, that loyalty starts to fray.
He’s warm where my husband is cold. Open where he’s guarded. And for the first time in years, I feel seen.

Miles
I didn’t expect him—this quiet, guarded firefighter with eyes full of sadness and a heart too full of love for someone who doesn’t deserve it.
He’s killing himself to save something that died a long time ago.
And as much as I hate how he’s hurting me in the process, I can’t seem to pull away.
Because some love burns quietly.
And some will consume you.

JJ & Miles

This book was a journey.

Miles, one of our MMC's, is an absolute delight. A sunshine and rainbow kind of guy. He's trying his best in life and in love. He's got a job he enjoys, friends he loves and a sister and nephew he's close with. He's open to love, looking for it and thinks he just might have found it in JJ. If only things, life, were that simple.

JJ, on the other hand, is a very messy character. He's been through it. He's rough around the edges. He's got all the gear, and no idea, as they say. He makes questionable choices in this book that are difficult to relate to since I've never found myself in a similar situation. I found I had to stop myself from judging him too harshly and just let his story unfold the way it was going to. To see whether or not there would be the kind of character growth needed to make him the right partner and choice for Miles. I wanted to equal parts shake the man and hug him, telling him it would be ok.

For every step forward that they take, another step is taken back shortly after. JJ just doesn't know how to accept good things in his life. He feels like he doesn't deserve them and so he reacts poorly when things seem to be going well. The man had a lot of things he needed to unpack, and, in the end, Miles was the catalyst for him recognising that he doesn't need to accept the life he had and that he could take control of it and find happiness.

If you're a fan of hard earned HEA's this will be a good one for you. If you're a fan of fire fighter romances with a strong found family vibe, you're going to enjoy this. If you enjoy a sunshine/grumpy sort of vibe between characters, this has it in spades. There are also a lot of side characters who I was side eyeing in the hopes that they eventually get their own books down the line, fingers and toes crossed.

** SPOILER (ish)**

JJ is married. He and his husband don't live together, in fact they live in separate states, and they haven't been together for quite some time. They have an unspoken agreement (not that JJ wanted this) that the marriage is an open one provided they are discreet about things. Throughout the book, JJ and MILES only sleep with one another. JJ does not at any point sleep with his 'husband'. I know some people prefer to be aware if there is any sort of cheating in stories - so take from this what you will. I didn't consider it cheating, JJ's marriage is toxic, but others may feel differently.

I received a copy of this ARC from GRR. This is my full and honest review.

Wow, I loved this, the hurt, tension, angst, secrets… this was good. I read this in one day

These two were good together.

I loved how Miles was able to show JJ there is more out there, that he did not have to settle.

I also really like the found family in this.

JJ was holding himself back, trying not to get too attached to Miles, Miles the ever bubbly sunshiny guy was none the wiser… to JJ’s secret.

I really enjoy Penny Fox’s writing style. The stories always have some of that fiery angst.

I ate this book up in a day. I loved the angst and tension

These two had an uphill battle to get to their hea.

Great story

So thankful or this arc

Finding what you forgot you wanted

Oh my heart. JJ and Miles definitely go through a lot but the fact that they see each other is critical.

JJ is our grumpy firefighter. He is absolutely stuck in his life. He is holding onto things that don't need or deserve his time and effort. He has forgotten all the things he dreamed were possible because of Franklin. The man he married so many years ago is a stranger and their marriage is only on paper. Seriously Franklin is scum.

Miles is this sunshiny kindergarten teacher who helps his sister care for his nephew. I absolutely adored the relationship between him and his sister and nephew. They were so close and had each other's back all their lives.

I loved how Miles was able to remind JJ how a relationship should be. The excitement. The passion. The desire. Both of these men were missing something but didn't realize exactly what it was.

This story is one of discovery and finding someone who only wants you for who you are. It's about realizing you were not okay but you will be. I loved not only these men but the side characters as well.

The things that Penny Fox does to me 🤣🥰🥵🥺😭🥹😡😍!! I loved Miles and JJ together. I enjoyed almost every moment of them together, except for those ones that hurt my heart. Miles is just sunshine and made me smile. JJ, oh man, that man reminds me of me in the worst ways and I loved/hated him for it. But seriously, when these two are on page together.. they are just wonderful and made my heart happy. I knew Penny Fox would hurt me big at some point in this story and I both anticipated it and dreaded it during every happy moment. As for the side characters, color me intrigued. I have all sorts of questions about the other Bennett brothers and I can’t wait for Nash's story.

We first met firefighter JJ as a side character in Broken Vows, but Flashpoint Nights pulls him right into the spotlight to show the heartbreaking reality of his life behind closed doors. He is trapped in a completely dead, touch-starved marriage, desperately killing himself to stay loyal to a husband who treats him with absolute coldness. Everything changes when he meets Miles, a vibrant pop of sunshine who enters his life like a literal beacon of light. But because JJ takes his vows so seriously, developing feelings for Miles triggers a massive wave of internal guilt, leaving Miles painfully caught in the crossfire of a relationship that died a long time ago. With the help of his Firehouse 99 colleague Noah—who acts as the ultimate supportive best friend and wingman—JJ has to find the courage to realise his loyalty has become a prison if he wants a real chance at happiness.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am completely blown away by how visceral and honest the writing style is in this book. Penny Fox doesn't sugarcoat anything; the first half of this story is a heavy, slow, and emotionally draining climb, but it makes the payoff so incredibly worth it. You can literally feel JJ’s loneliness down to your bones, and that specific line where he mentions spending years holding on to a man who barely held his hand completely broke my heart.

The contrast when Miles enters the pages is just beautiful. He is pure sunshine, and watching him slowly wake JJ up from years of emotional numbness was spectacular. I also completely fell in love with Noah. Every time the plot risked stalling under the weight of JJ's guilt, Noah would step in with the perfect blend of blunt truth and a strategic push to get the romance moving again. The relationship is a definitive slow-burn, which felt completely right given the circumstances, but once that tension finally snaps, the open-door spice is incredibly high-heat and passionate. My only minor grievance is that the final act falls into a slightly predictable romance formula compared to how uniquely raw the opening chapters were, but honestly, after everything JJ went through, I was just desperate to see him finally get his happy ending.

This is an absolutely gorgeous hurt-comfort story that handles a very difficult situation with a massive amount of maturity and respect. It will definitely make you cry in the beginning, but the emotional growth and the beautiful connection between JJ and Miles make it completely unforgettable.

Flashpoint Nights pulled me in fast with that heavy emotional weight that sits on your chest from the very beginning. This is one of those romances where you can feel the ache before the relationship even really starts, and honestly, those tend to hit the hardest for me. It leans into longing, emotional neglect, and that painful realization that sometimes loyalty can keep you trapped just as much as it can keep you grounded.

JJ was such an easy character to connect with because so much of his pain feels quiet. Not loud or dramatic, just years of carrying love that hasn’t been returned the way it should be. That kind of emotional exhaustion is all over him, and Penny Fox does a really good job of making you feel that without over-explaining it. There’s this constant tension between hope and resignation in him, and it makes every choice feel heavier.

And then Miles steps into that space, and the shift in energy is immediate.

Miles feels like warmth in a story built around emotional coldness. He sees JJ in a way that feels both comforting and dangerous because once someone finally sees you, it becomes impossible to keep pretending you’re okay. Their dynamic has that slow, consuming kind of pull to it. It’s not built on instant chaos or flashy attraction. It’s built on recognition. On need. On all the things neither of them are really prepared to face.

What I really liked here is how complicated the emotional landscape feels. There’s guilt tangled into desire, grief tangled into hope, and this constant push-pull between what feels safe and what feels honest. That kind of emotional conflict makes the connection feel raw because it never feels simple.

The firefighter backdrop adds a lot to the atmosphere too. There’s already this built-in tension with the job itself (danger, adrenaline, exhaustion), and it mirrors what’s happening emotionally in a way that works really well. Everything feels like it’s on the edge of combustion, both in their personal lives and in the connection growing between them.

And the emotional pacing here? That slow unraveling worked for me. This isn’t a romance that rushes to make things easy. It sits in the discomfort, in the uncertainty, in the complicated reality of wanting something you maybe shouldn’t. That makes the payoff feel earned because the emotional groundwork is there.

Overall, this feels like a deeply emotional MM romance for readers who love messy hearts, complicated loyalty, quiet longing, and relationships that force characters to confront truths they’ve been avoiding for far too long. If you like your romance heavy on emotional tension with a strong undercurrent of hurt/comfort and healing, this one will probably land for you.

As always be mindful of any trigger warnings, what I like you may not.
Happy Reading! ✨📚

Penny Fox is an absolute hidden gem of an author! I said this before... but I really need to dive into her backlist! This is only my second read by her and I have loved both of them! Flashpoint Nights is the second book in the Firehouse 99 shared world. I originally signed up to ARC, and while waiting for it I started to have second thoughts on if I would even enjoy this type of read. I am writing this review right after finishing it and omg! I didn't want it to end!! I just wanted more and more.
JJ and Miles have such a strong, fierce, undenible beautiful type of love that has been through it all. Watching their relationship develop in such a natural, realistic way was such a great surprise, especially since so many other books feel rushed or just too perfect. This had hardships and genuine complications. The characters aren't flawless... well, they are to me, but they make mistakes. I would love to be best friends with Miles! He is such a carefree, wild, understanding, forgiving, bubbly, fun guy! JJ is a hot firefighter... enough said... no just kidding, he comes across as that tortured soul that you just can't help but love and want to protect.
Penny Fox definitely makes the reader feel the emotions right along with the characters. It takes a truly amazing author to make the reader see the pictures and not just the words written. My heart ached for JJ, while I was also being so frustrated with him. There are so many good elements to this book. The spice is good and it has an amazing balance with the plot. JJ's secret had me wondering most of the time. Even the side characters were amazing! Noah is absolutely adorable and had me laughing every single time he was there.
The little tease at the end wasn't nice though... If you are reading this book after August... I am jealous!! If you are reading it before, then you know what I am talking about. I just want this story and these characters to continue. I hope we get to see them all getting that special kind of love sometime, somehow, somewhere.
I highly recommend this book 100%. It has the emotions, the spice, the plot that keeps you flipping the page, and the fictional characters that you just want in your real life!

JJ and Nash, they are the books hero's, its primary characters, the one's around whom the romance revolves. Did I love them? Absolutely. Did they win my heart? Sorry, no, that honour goes to Naoh!

JJ is a married firefighter whose husband lives thousands of miles away and sees him as inconvenience though JJ refuses to believe they can't salvage their marriage. Nash is a Kindergarten teacher, living with his sister and nephew since they have no-one else. He has not long since come out of a very unhappy relationship and has no plans to enter into a new one. A chance meeting in a bar, what they both expect to be a one night stand somehow manages to become so much more.

And Noah? He is Nash's nephew and he is an absolute treasure. Open, honest, funny and without filter. He really did win my heart and I think he was the one who really bought JJ and Nash together - with his unwavering enthusiasm for the fire engines!

Both men have tragic past histories related to family, JJ's is the most harrowing and is touched on with tenderness and understanding, it's integral to the story and not gratuitous. They find something in one another that lights them up, unintentionally their one night becomes more, gradually, but they are both treading carefully, not sure what to do, scared to do too much or not enough.

A beautiful, heartfelt and moving story. Both men have sad pasts, have ghosts haunting them, are trying to make the best of the lives they have found themselves with and Penny Fox gives us time to get to know them, properly, to see them navigate the ups and downs of adulthood and love, of wrong decisions and right ones. It's a story that will break your heart at times and at others have it soaring. It has the most perfect ending and then the epilogue comes along to wrap it all up in the most beautiful bow. I highly recommend it, you won't find a soft and sweet romance, you will find some harrowing, honest moments and you will be hooked.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

When Penny Fox returns to the Firehouse 99 universe, you strap in. This isn't an author who deals in gentle simmers. She deals in five-alarm fires of the heart, and Flashpoint Night proves once again that nobody leaves her stories unscathed.
This time around, the heat comes from the collision between JJ, a firefighter carrying around enough emotional baggage to fill an entire engine bay, and Miles, a school teacher with golden retriever energy and a heart so soft it should probably come with a warning label. The chemistry between them is intense, sweet, and exactly the kind of slow burn that makes you forget you have responsibilities outside of reading.
What elevates this book beyond your average MM romance, though, is the gut punch of JJ's backstory. His loyalty to Franklin, his absent, selfish, emotionally abusive husband, is rendered with a painful honesty that's hard to look away from. Watching JJ slowly untangle himself from a relationship built on neglect, while still grappling with the loyalty he was conditioned to feel, is some of the most affecting material in the book. And for the record: Franklin does not deserve a redemption arc, does not deserve a spinoff, and frankly does not deserve the oxygen he's breathing on the page. Good riddance.
Miles, meanwhile, is the perfect counterbalance. Patient without being a pushover, bubbly without being naive, he meets JJ exactly where he is and never once tries to rush the healing. Fox has a gift for writing angst that feels earned rather than manufactured, and the tension she builds here simmers beautifully before finally, satisfyingly, boiling over.
I devoured this book in a single day, which should tell you everything you need to know. The road to JJ and Miles's happily ever after is an uphill one, full of trauma, trust issues, and the kind of fiery angst Fox does better than almost anyone in the genre. But the climb is absolutely worth it.
Rating: Five stars, and a standing ovation for whoever decided Franklin doesn't get a sequel.

Flashpoint Nights by Penny Fox is a Firehouse 99 story. It is part of a shared world but can be read as a standalone. I loved this one so much. I was a little hesitant going in, but JJ and Miles completely grabbed my attention and heart. JJ has been through hell his entire life. He was abused by his dad (physically/emotionally) and his husband, Franklin (emotionally). He thinks that he does not deserve to feel happiness. JJ and Franklin have a strange relationship. They don’t live together (not even in the same state), talk to each other, go to events together, or communicate in any way. They’ve been married for 14 years and JJ is so desperate to have his husband be there. Since they do not spend time together they are in an open marriage (though nothing happens except between Miles and JJ).

Miles comes in like a little ball of sunshine and gives JJ what his heart wants so much. He does react sometimes and is at times cruel and emotionally unavailable. But Miles with his steadiness just offers attention, peace, and acceptance to JJ.

I could not put this book down. These two were perfect for each other and I just wanted JJ to tell Franklin to gtfoh. Franklin was so cruel and I didn’t understand why he wanted to remain married when he really wasn't. It was weird and I was thankful when the author said he would NOT be getting a redemption story.

I am so intrigued by JJ’s brothers too. I cannot wait to read Nash’s story and the epilogue made me happy for Hollis. Actually, the whole epilogue was great. I was smiling so much about everyone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys angst, hurt/comfort, but a sweet ending for all the characters involved. I look forward to Nash’s story. Oh! And I’m hopeful we get AJ’s story too. He was a good friend.

I received an ARC from the author and GRR for my honest review.

"When loyalty becomes a cage, love becomes the key."

I've read a lot of MM romances over the years, and one thing that always stood out to me is when an author takes the time to build the emotional journey instead of relying solely on chemistry. Flashpoint Nights worked for me because the heart of the story wasn't just the romance—it was JJ's personal growth and the difficult choices he had to make along the way, it was beautiful.

JJ is the kind of protagonist who can test your patience at times, but that's exactly what made him feel authentic. His reluctance to let go of a situation that was clearly damaging felt realistic rather than manufactured for drama. Watching him slowly come to terms with what he deserved from life and from a partner was easily the strongest part of the book for me.

Miles was a welcome contrast. I appreciated that he wasn't portrayed as a perfect savior figure. Instead, he offered support, understanding, and a safe space for JJ to figure things out for himself. Their relationship developed at a pace that felt earned, which made the emotional payoff all the more satisfying.

Penny Fox also did a good job balancing the heavier themes with moments of warmth and hope. While there were a few places where I would have liked a bit more depth or time spent on certain conflicts, the overall story kept me invested from beginning to end.

For readers who enjoy character-driven MM romance with emotional stakes, healing, and a relationship that develops through trust rather than instant perfection, Flashpoint Nights is well worth adding to your TBR.

It's a thoughtful and engaging read that left me feeling satisfied when I turned the final page.

This book is a part of the Firehouse 99 series but can be read as a standalone. Flashpoint nights is an MM romance between Firefighter JJ and teacher Miles.

As a firefighter JJ has seen a lot of bad things and sometimes drowns out a bad night or bad memory at the bar. One day Miles casually hits on him and sparks starts flying fast.

JJ is fighting his morals for most of the book. He is married but his husband Franklin lives his own life thousand of miles away and is very emotional abusive towards JJ. They have green lights to hook up with other people but something inside JJ makes him want to not wanna fail his marriage because he feels like he is losing all other points in his life. He has a lot of emotional damage from growing up and Franklin is definitely taking advantage of it. Always putting JJ down, making him feel worthless and stupid.

Miles’ life is very different. He lives with his sister and nephew is a two home house. His nephew is crazy about all things firefighter and firetrucks and his and JJ’s path seem to cross constantly. Miles is JJ’s secret sanctuary, his happy place but also his own hell because he hasn’t told Miles about Franklin.

I really enjoyed this book. I would normally stay far away from cheating but nobody should be treated like JJ by a significant other. Franklin is an absolute piece of s***! This book has a happy ever after despite everything going on throughout this book. I was totally hooking and really rooting for JJ and Miles and I couldn’t out this book down.

Definitely 5 stars from me and I can’t wait to dive back in to other characters in the series.

I absolutely devoured this book in a single day.

Penny Fox always delivers the angst, but this one hit especially hard. The loneliness, tension, secrets, and emotional weight of JJ's situation felt so raw and real that there were moments my heart genuinely hurt for him.

JJ is a grumpy firefighter who has spent years stuck in a marriage that exists only on paper, holding onto a relationship that stopped giving him what he needed long ago. Miles, on the other hand, is pure sunshine...a kindergarten teacher with a huge heart and a close-knit family who slowly reminds JJ that life can be so much more than simply surviving.

What I loved most was how Miles helped JJ rediscover the things he'd forgotten he wanted. Not just romance, but happiness, passion, and the possibility of being truly seen by someone. Their connection develops slowly, which felt right given everything JJ was carrying, and the emotional payoff was so worth it.

The found family was another standout. Noah was an absolute favourite, always knowing exactly when JJ needed a push or a reality check. The relationships between Miles, his sister, and his nephew were also incredibly sweet and added so much warmth to the story.

This is very much a hurt/comfort romance. The first half is heavy, emotional, and full of longing, but watching JJ slowly come back to life because of Miles made every heartbreaking moment worth it.

This book took me through the full gambit of emotions available. The story had me hooked from the start and kept me invested until the end. I swooned and raged and fell in love and wanted to commit murder. My heart absolutely shattered for JJ in this book. He deserved so much better than his good for nothing “husband” gave him. That man deserves a punch to the face. But what I absolutely loved was JJ’s connection to and chemistry with Miles. It’s so genuine and supportive and sweet. They are so good for each other. And their chemistry is off the charts. It’s an absolute inferno and I loved it. Seeing JJ struggle due to his toxic relationship was so heartbreaking. But watching Miles being kind and patient and understanding and supportive was beyond endearing. Their connection felt so authentic and honestly beautiful. There was fear and reservation present but that was tackled by genuine compassion and care. I appreciated how Miles being in JJ’s life didn’t magically fix everything and make it all okay. We saw the raw and real struggle and damage that came from the past. And we got to see the healing that came from the present. It made this book so much more relatable and realistic, and honestly it’s what had me so invested in the story. It felt honest. And the happiness that’s found in the end was well deserved and hard earned, making it mean even more. It was exactly what I wanted and everything they (and I) needed.

❤️🔥 What an emotional rollercoaster this was!
Penny Fox completely stole my heart with Miles and his journey. From the very beginning, my heart ached for him as he desperately held on to a marriage that had already slipped through his fingers. His loyalty was beautiful, but it was also heartbreaking to watch him pour so much of himself into someone who no longer cherished him.
Then along comes someone who truly sees him, and I was rooting for these two with everything I had! Their connection felt so natural, so tender, and so full of hope. Watching Miles slowly realize that he deserved to be loved just as fiercely as he loved others had me smiling through happy tears.
I absolutely loved the balance between the emotional moments and the swoony romance. The chemistry was undeniable, but it was the quiet moments, the healing, the trust, and the way these two helped each other find happiness again that completely captured my heart.
The Firehouse 99 world just keeps getting better, and I loved being back with these firefighters! The camaraderie, the emotion, the romance, and all the heart made this impossible to put down.
If you're looking for a firefighter romance filled with angst, healing, second chances at happiness, and a hero you'll be cheering for from beginning to end, Flashpoint Nights is one you don't want to miss.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An emotional, heartwarming, beautifully written romance that had me hooked from the first page to the last! ❤️🚒✨

Omg this book was so adorable 🥹 I absolutely loved Miles and JJ!

JJ’s story was completely heartbreaking. This man has been through so much and watching him slowly start to open up and realise that he deserves happiness had me all in my feelings. He’s spent so long carrying the weight of a toxic and manipulative marriage that he’d almost forgotten what it felt like to put himself first.

Then along comes Miles ❤️

Miles was everything, kind, patient, understanding and willing to give JJ the time and space he needed. He wasn’t looking to rush anything; he was simply waiting for the right person to share his life with. Watching him support JJ while quietly falling harder and harder for him was beautiful.

I absolutely adored the their relationship. From a one night stand to friendship and eventually something so much deeper, it felt natural and genuine. Their chemistry was amazing, but it was their softer moments that completely stole my heart. The tenderness, the care and the way they showed up for each other made this story so special.

A beautiful, emotional romance about healing, moving forward and finding the courage to choose happiness 🥰

My first book by this author and it definitely won't be my last! I really enjoyed the way the story was written for most of the book. I think the mental health themes and vulnerabilities were portrayed very well and authentically.

JJ is broken by the trauma he went through early in life, but also what he sees during his job as a firefighter. This leads to him making some questionable life choices, and it's clear from the start that Miles can be a support in all this. Now, I'm not going to lie, JJ is a bit of a red flag with the way he treats Miles. And I am not sure I would've reacted the same way he did to some of the things JJ did to him.

I'm a bit disappointed in the way the last 30% got handled. I wanted to know more about JJ healing's journey and the motives of a third character. He gets portrayed as a 100% villian and I think i would have loved to see more layers in his character.

All by all a lovely story I devoured that makes me want to check out more books by this author.

Flashpoint Nights delivers an emotionally charged MM romance that explores heartbreak, self-discovery, and the courage to pursue something real. JJ’s journey is particularly compelling, shaped by years of unmet needs and the quiet burden of putting others first. His character carries so much weight that it’s easy to care deeply about what happens to him.

When Miles enters the picture, the story takes on a new layer of complexity. Their connection develops through mutual understanding and an undeniable pull toward one another, even as secrets and unresolved feelings stand in the way. The firefighting setting adds intensity, creating a backdrop filled with pressure and uncertainty that mirrors the characters’ personal struggles.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the depth Penny Fox brings to the characters. Layered with yearning, difficult choices, and personal growth, it delivers a satisfying and rewarding reading experience. Readers who enjoy character-driven romances with tension, healing, and meaningful relationships will find plenty to appreciate here.

I really enjoyed this book so much. Flashpoint Nights is part of the Firehouse 99 series. This is the first time i have ever read anything from Penny Fox and let me tell you I was so blown away. This MM romance was an absolute amazing book to read.
Miles and JJ are two amazing characters I love how their polar opposites yet fit each other perfectly. Miles is your happy and fun-loving person. He has a job he loves, friend he is close with and a sister and nephew he absolutely adores.
Then you have JJ who isn't having the best time in life. He has a husband who i feel is a complete twat. they don't live together at all hell not even in the same state. They have an open marriage which JJ didn't want at all, they just had to be discreet about it. Which I feel has let to JJ feeing unworthy and not undeserving. JJ I feel carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and need to find peace. Which I feel Miles bring the stability and love to JJ and helps him see he is loved and wanted and deserves everything.

This was good! Bit of a slow start, but once the relationship between the MC’s started getting serious, that’s when it really took off for me. I liked the way the marriage was handled, though I would have liked to understand Franklin’s motivations a little more—why was he like that? Some of his behaviour seemed erratic; one minute he would completely dismiss JJ and act like he didn’t care, the next he’d be threatening to come visit and be blowing up JJ’s phone. He comes across as a narcissist but I would have liked to see that explored more; I think that would have been more interesting than the sister’s romance subplot. But that’s just a personal preference, so it didn’t affect my rating.

Really liked the ending and how the MCs handled everything, as well as the prologue. This is a new to me author and I enjoyed their writing. I’ll definitely be checking out their other books.

Thanks to GRR and the author for the ARC; these are my honest opinions.

This is a bit different from most of the stuff I've come across. I liked it quite a bit, was intrigued by it the entire time, found it hard to put down.

Having said that, firefighter JJ is a walking red flag - he's been married for 14 years by the time he meets schoolteacher Miles, yet he doesn't bother to tell him that until quite late in the book. You know there's a 3rd act breakup coming in this book from practically the first chapter because of all JJ's lies of omission (he never directly lies to Miles, he just doesn't tell him the whole story). JJ doesn't actually live with his husband, or even talk to him much, but hasn't pursued a divorce due to his messed up mental health because of a horrible incident in childhood. Miles and JJ spark when they meet, and sleep together immediately. It takes far longer for them to put all their cards on the table and work their way to their HEA.

It was very satisfying to see these 2 get what they wanted in the end.

3.5 rounded up to a four.

Miles and JJ's story was interesting..  I think the way Penny wrote about JJ's relationship was done well but I didn't love how it felt like he was cheating and purposefully kept that part of his life from Miles intentionally. It just made it seem more 'wrong.' I understand his relationship with the man he was married to wasn't an actual relationship, and neither of them viewed it as such, but I just think it would've gone over better if JJ was honest from the beginning. I didn't love all the secrets that were being kept.

Having said that though, once the secrets came out and JJ put in the work, I did enjoy seeing these two men finally find their way together. They have a grumpy/sunshine vibe going on that I loved reading about. Another character I also adored was Noah! His character is absolutely adorable and his excitement regarding firetrucks was so precious!! His character made this book even more enjoyable to read.

Some books move me, and this is one of those books I was invested in the story of JJ and Mikes. My heart hurt for JJ who has had lots of difficulty in his life early on and now as an a marriage he’s struggling to save that is really not worth saving, but he doesn’t know how to deal with that. When he meet Myles it and they start hanging out. It gets even harder to navigate. I love the Support that Mlles gave him but in the end, this is a story about learning to love yourself so that you can love others. Something JJ has to do. It’s about choosing life rather than living in the past and trying to re-create something that doesn’t exist. It is a reminder to all of us, but finding our true love, can make us feel seen and heard when we might not— I don’t know a wonderfully written book that I encouraged everyone to read.

This is a new author for me and I enjoyed their writing. This is a MM romance with a messy and complex story that comes from a one night stand to something more. There are secrets, hurt, tension, angst and a third act breakup.

JJ is broken by the trauma he went through early in life. It’s a slow reveal of his secrets and the trauma and pain he's been carrying. Honestly he’s a red flag because of it all. However, miles is a green flag. He’s so sweet and caring and shows JJ there’s more to life. It had a good ending and I liked the ending and how the MCs handled everything.

Overall it’s a good MM romance with tension, healing, mental health rep, emotional and messy, hard fought HEA. 3.7/5

Flashpoint Nights is part of the Firehouse 99 Series.

I felt bad for JJ through a lot of this story. He doesn't want to give up on something that everyone else around him sees as already over. He just needed someone to show him that he was loveable and was worth sticking around for. Everyone seemed to leave him, not all maliciously, but there was no one there fully for JJ. That was until Miles comes into the picture. He was such a sweetie that kind of went with the flow a bit. He wore his heart on his sleeve and let everyone know he loved and cared for them. Through their interactions together, Miles gives JJ the strength he needed to right his future and put himself first in his life. These two had a strong connection together that was tested and found strong.

J.J., a firefighter, hooks up with Miles, a teacher, for one night. Fate brings them together more and even though they are both attracted, J.J. keeps things from Miles. Like the fact he's married. It's a bad one but J.J. won't give up on it or tell Miles the truth. You love sunshiny Miles who is caring, open and adorable, not to mention a great uncle. J.J. is harder to like with his guilt, torment, lies by admission, cheating and angst and yet he is drawn to the light of Miles and is sympathetic character with past and present trauma. I struggled with the cheating trope but J.J. coming clean with honesty and his therapy helped. It was lovely and steamy. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.

This story is about JJ, a firefighter, and Miles. They happen to hook up one night at a bar, and although they try to keep it as a one night hook up, neither can stay away from the other. With Miles' nephew obsessed with anything to do with firefighting, it is even harder to avoid each other. With secrets being kept, they need to overcome some issues and obstacles, but eventually they get their HEA. I loved how caring and forgiving Miles was with JJ and how he made him feel peace and calm in his mind. I loved how JJ was so dominant and Miles would do whatever JJ asked and that JJ was able to take his time out and get his head straight to overcome some of his issues. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one in the series.

This book is part of the Firehouse 99 series. This is the second book that has been released and I am digging this series. Of course, I am biased because it is based in my hometown (cue the music) “Sweet Home Chicago!”
This was such a great read. This story drew me in and brought back sad memories of my previous marriage. I know how JJ felt because I felt that too. It is hard when you are the only person trying to work on a relationship. At what point do you decide, it’s time to let go and move on?
Thank you, Penny Fox, for this sad, steamy and beautiful story. It reminded me of everything I went through to become the person I am today. It is a beautiful thing to realize that you will survive and thrive despite people who try to hold you back.

This was an emotional and hard-hitting MM romance, with a messy and complex relationship that blossoms from a one night stand into something unspoken.
It has a slow reveal of JJ's secrets and the trauma and pain he's been carrying.
Miles was easy to love straight away, he's so sweet, caring and genuine.
I liked the layers of guilt, hope, hurt and comfort, and the fears of failure.
I enjoyed Miles relationship with his nephew and sister, and his dedication to being a supportive uncle/ Co-parent.
The romance is the focus, the spice is secondary, it has personal growth and reflection, and the ending is satisfying.
