Ah the glory of drug producing new adults.

The Designed begins in a very precarious situation, with Rho trying to escape…something. It’s not too clear to the reader what exactly he’s trying to run away from, only that he is and he’s desperate to get away. Of course a few details are given about how some kind of a drug is being extracted from his body, thus rendering him uselessly weak and continuously exhausted…not the most ideal of conditions for an escapee.

The writing in this particular part of the book, the first chapter, was more than enough to make sure that I’d read the book in a single sitting. You don’t know what’s happening to Rho. You don’t know where he’s being kept captive and why. You don’t know if he’s the good guy and if the “captivity” is actually him serving his sentence. You just find yourself rooting for him to get out as safely and quickly as possible.

And then the story shifts to Raleigh, the protagonist of the novel. Raleigh is an eighteen year old girl who can—wait for it—sense other people’s diseases and emotions. It’s bizarre and unique and when she actually describes the feeling of every little pain that it isn’t hers, her talent comes off as creepy and unsettling. Nonetheless, the author did a spectacular job of showing just how level-headed Raleigh was, inspite of having given up hope for any treatment of her “problem.” But when a treatment does arrive, Rho and Raleigh’s paths cross, and there begins the story of Lucidin and over-enthusiastic scientists and doctors with hidden agendas.

Rho was a bit of a mystery. He wasn’t in the book too much (the book was focused more of Raleigh) but I liked what I read about him. I’m really not shipping Rho and Raleigh (Colin & Raleigh forever, yo!) but I can see how they’d make the ideal pair. Rho was motivated and he obviously had the charm that the love interest of the MC is supposed to have, but I still expected more from him. He came across as formulaic and while he was cute being all protective of Raleigh, it got old pretty soon. I’m looking forward to reading more of Rho (and Kappa and Sigma, his brothers, for that matter) in the next installment.

And then, obviously, there was Raleigh. Raleigh was, like I said, strong and level-headed despite having a lot of challenges thrown at her all t once. She went from being a sick girl to being one of the most feared people in the book—and that was a change that she more or less adapted well to. She didn’t take shit from the other boys in the book—this book has a LOT of boys—and she didn’t bother with all the shit she got merely for being a girl. The Raleigh I saw at the beginning of the novel was completely gone by the end, and in her place was a smarter, stronger, tougher Raleigh, ready to take on the bad guys.

The Designed might be one of the best indie books I’ve ever read this year! Its well-researched and informative prose is not only interesting, but also explains so many things in the book that wouldn’t otherwise strike the reader as important. The writing is very, very good and I felt myself losing track of time and food and you know, essential living stuff. ALSO, WHAT THE FUCK IS THE DEAL WITH THAT BLOODY CLIFFHANGER!

I have to say that this is one of the best books I have read in awhile. I was hooked right from the start. We start with Rho, and him trying to escape, we do not know why or anything, but we just feel we need to root for him. There is not alot with Rho, but enough to really like him.

Raliegh is the main focus of this book, and I really liked her too. I loved her strength, and how she didn't take crap from anyone. I loved how her "problem" ended up making her very strong.

This book is a sci-fi with a touch of the paranormal, which I love.

I do not want to say too much, but want to say its written extremely well, and an awesome read. I didn't want it to end.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

A young girl has a ‘disease’ which causes unexplained blackouts but allows her to ‘see / feel’ other people’s illnesses. She discovers her problem is related to a drug she naturally produces and that there is a battle between genetically engineered people (the ‘Designed’ - who have been breed to produce the drug) and the scientists who produced them.

The main characters didn’t feel fully developed (this could be because this is the first of a series) and some of the dialogue sections / scenes were confusing (there were too many people in the discussions / multiple viewpoints). Some of the plot points were a bit unbelievable (such as being accepted by the ‘Designed’ and the scientist without any real questions being asked) and the writing could be tighter (there were some repeats of parts of the back story) - but overall this was a very good story / entertaining read.

Worth a read if you enjoy Sci-Fi.

I truly have to commend Kate Tailor the author, for taking the time and effort to write such a detailed novel. The reader is definitely up for a challenge when it comes to the terminology used in this book, yet it is very believable and the author defines everything. The definitions will surely help those that do not have a medical background. On the other hand Tailor also gives her readers a look at different points of view and I do love this style of writing. This gives the reader a deeper opportunity at understanding the characters and their position within the novel. Tailor also keeps the readers eyes peeled and surely the beginning of the novel is the start of it!

I give this book a rating of FIVE stars and I am so glad that I had the chance to give my honest opinion as well. I recommend to those that love a sci fi tale that intrigues them at every level!

Geek rating: 4/5

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. It appealed wonderfully to my inner science geek. The entire concept of Lucidin—a drug produced naturally by humans—is just so cool. And then there are all kinds of twists on how Lucidin works that make the idea endless. The author has done an excellent job of making Lucidin sound real, and as science fiction often does for me, it got me thinking about how the world would change if we discovered this drug was real. *shudder*

Raleigh is a great main character. Often, I find myself annoyed with female protagonists between the ages of fifteen and twenty. That’s not the case here. Raleigh thinks for herself and, for the most part, makes good, well-informed decisions. There were a few points where I thought she made up her mind too quickly, such as when deciding to go with Rho and his team, but generally, she shows herself to be intelligent and competent.

Rho is also a really interesting character. Really, all of the Designed are interesting. They’re origin story really makes me want to know all their backstories and, even more, how they became so different from one another. I can’t decide how I feel about the first chapter from Rho’s perspective. On the one hand, I love that glimpse into the danger of the Lucidin world. On the other, it kind of gave away where Raleigh’s story was going, and thus, Raleigh’s first few chapters read a little slow for me as they caught up to what I already knew from Rho’s chapter.

All in all, I would definitely read more from this author. The Designed is a great story full of fascinating science, thrill, adventure, and the beginnings of romance. I hope there is a sequel to assuage my curiosity about where the characters and the Lucidin plot are going.

The Designed is a well thought out story which mixes science fact with science fiction. Ms Tailor has been clever enough to write a very believable scenario consisting of human genetic engineering, a naturally produced drug that is very much in demand, and a cast of characters who have you rooting for them.

I found that the main character Raleigh, an eighteen year old American, was a character who grows stronger as the story progresses. She starts out as a sickly girl who constantly blacks out for no apparent reason until she is discovered to produce Lucidin, a powerful drug that allows people to have full control of their bodies and even influence other people.

She meets Rho, a Designed and the story takes off from there. Without adding spoilers as it is explained very early, The Designed are twelve brothers who were genetically created to produce the valuable Lucidin but after they broke away from the "prison" that they were being kept in, they have been on the run ever since. Hunted for the drug they produce, Rho recruits Raleigh to their cause to rescue two of their captured brothers.

The action then switches to the scientists camp and you learn that they might not be the evil monsters that were portrayed and you begin to wonder if Raleigh is on the correct side.

Intrigue, politics and romance are all thrown in. The science is believable, if a little scary and the pace of the story is good. My only complaint, keeping me from a five star rating, is that the action for the ending happened far too quickly for me. After investing the time reading the story, it seemed to be over before I knew what happened. The good thing is that the subtitle does say book one, so hopefully there will be a sequel as the story is left at a place where there is scope for one.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest, non-reciprocal review.

A fun, page-turning story... one of the best indie books I've read.

One Sentence Summary: A girl with a strange "disease" finds out that she actually has a rare set of powers that puts her squarely within a under-world of drug-lords and dangerous scientists.

The good: Interesting and exciting: new facts about the well-imagined world of Lucidin, dangerous situations, and mounting tension make it easy to sit down and read for an hour (or three). A lot of science and medicine, some double-agentry, and some fairly interesting dynamics between people.

The bad: A bit of "head-hopping" (the writer's viewpoint switches around between multiple people's viewpoint within a single scene, which is a little disorienting and doesn't feel as authentic to me). The characterization is also fairly shallow... the characters all kind of do what you would expect them to do. But this is OK... the book has good pull because of the action and science, so deeper characterization, while it would be nice, isn't really necessary. Also a few (less than 10) minor typos, but otherwise well-edited.

Kate Tailor creates a unique and dazzling sci-fi tale in her debut book, The Designed. Bring a new evolutionary level in humanity, Tailor writes a very realistic scenario consisting of human genetic engineering, a naturally produce drug, and a cast of characters who bring the story into a believable Darwin advanced world. The Designed is a tale that has readers wanting more.

We began the story with the escape of a boy who has been captured, drugged, and is on the brink of death. After his escape, we are then introduce to our leading character Raleigh Groves, an eighteen year old girl. Raleigh however is not a normal girl, she suffers from a disease that causes her to have unexplainable blackouts while gifting her with the insight into other people’s physical illnesses. Doctors can’t give her a reason as to why or what the disease is, let alone a cure for it. That is until a new doctor, named Henry Orman, comes and tells her that he would like to run some tests. He soon informs Raleigh that he has discovered that her disease is linked a powerful and rare drug produce by the body and mind, called Lucidin, which allows people to have full control of their own bodies and even influence other people as well. With her diagnoses, Raleigh is transferred into Henry’s care for the cure.

While in the care of Henry, Raleigh is asked to help a young man name Rho, one of the Designed, who suffers from the same disease and is at the moment of the verge of death. With a Lucidin transfer Raleigh is able to save his life and soon finds that Lucidin is more than just blackouts and being able to sense others. With Rho and his team, Raleigh discovers that Lucidin may be more a problem than a gift. Following Raleigh through her story of Lucidin and the Designed, we are brought though the world of power, corruption, betrayal, and “some-what” romance (more like a hint of romance, no more like flirting or longing, yeah, it doesn’t really hit the romance thing full on).

Tailor tells the story in a third person perspective, allowing us to not only realized what is happening in the mind of Raleigh but also all the people she encounters. At one point in the story, we get the perception of five different characters in less than two page. The way Tailor transitions the perceptions is flawless, an unseen line in character flow. She present the characters in a way that make them realistic and believable. Raleigh, being unknown to this disease is somewhat naive and (as Rho would put it) “innocent”. But as the story evolves Raleigh grows with it, turning into a capable and understanding girl who gains her own power and self-control. Though there was not enough of Rho (I wish there was more of him), you can feel the connections he makes with each character he enacts with. Rho come across as friend and trustworthy. Tailor has put a lot of emotion in every character that she has created. Even the selfish, Lucidin crazed scientists and Receps, are painted in detail with a distinctive personality all their own.

However, there is quite a bit of info dump in The Designed. Often times there is a repeat of the backstory, but in different ways. The Designed says it went this way, the scientists say it went that way and the info dump becomes somewhat necessary when trying to keep the story line together. (Pretty much you are caught up in a lie and following Raleigh, you don’t really get to decide who or what the truth is, but you get to hear the he said she said thing.) Even with all the info dump the action in the story never ends and you keep asking what will happen next.

The Design ended with the worst cliff hanger even and I for one can wait for the sequel. I look forward to seeing how Tailor will take the plot and the characters forward. (Hoping for more Rho and Raleigh romance)

This book is well written and full of suspense and intrigue. It is not an easy or light read. It is detailed and with a lot of medical terminology that is well explained to the reader. I am a nurse and so I got into the medical and scientific part of the story and it was quite believable.

Raleigh is a great main character. She has been passing out for years. She finds that she can diagnose people’s diseases and she can sense people when they are around her. Her family loves her and they have been looking for a cure for years. Her mom won’t talk about it when she goes to the hospital with her uncle and help with diagnosing. Her mom is a little scared (I would be too!).

Her uncle and his coworker found Henry, a doctor who says he can help her, so she goes to Belgium to get her Lucid extracted. That is what has been making her faint. She makes too much of it. It kind of gives you a high but it helps you sense people and other things. People desire this, and some are addicted to it. Some people make it naturally and some of those don’t feel anything from their own Lucid that they make. Those just get extractions to give to the scientists for study or for the black market. This is where I started to see the lines of right and wrong start to blur.

Henry explains everything to her. I like him. He is a kind man and a genuine Scientist. While there she meets Rho from the designed who in bad shape after being extracted to near death. The designed are those who were made scientifically to make this drug. But the designed are twelve brothers all with Greek names. Raleigh gives him a long transfusion of her own Lucid and he gets better. He is grateful and wants to take her with them. Woooo, stop right there! Why would Henry allow her to go with these guys? I don’t know either; I guess it is a book thing. She is more like Rho and people will use her for her Lucid when they find out that she was born and can make an abundant amount. Rho takes a liking to her and feels he needs to protect her. There are people after the Designed. They want them to be killed or captured for their Lucid and extreme soldier like qualities that makes them dangerous. To Whom though? When they leave, she meets some of Rho’s brothers. Sigma is very harsh. He is scary too! I wouldn’t want to be around him. He decides to use her to see if she can be trusted to go find the two brothers Mu and Tau who have been captured by their enemies. So she infiltrates and is alone.

From there the two sides become blurred to me. In the beginning, Raleigh heard Rho’s story now she is in the scientific community and hears their story both have advantages and disadvantages and both sides have mistakes. Raleigh seems to be in the middle and does what she feels best to do. She makes friends and gets some of them to see that they can do more and others she chooses not to trust.

The story goes back and forth between different Points of View.

Then it is all action. I like that; action, drama, suspense and medicine. I like that Raleigh has to determine who is good and bad and what to do and who to trust. She wants to do well in the world and she feels like she can. I want to have the next book now, because I want to see what happens to them all!

Rho has the same drug flowing through his veins. Surrounded by addicts, dealers and scientists, he does everything he can to stay afloat – but it’s hard to know who to trust. As Rho and Raleigh are flung together, they must navigate the dangerous world of Lucidin, and Raleigh must decide where her allegiance lies.

Hello and welcome to the blog tour for The Designed, run by the lovely Xpresso Book tours! This book has a really interesting premise, and is fantastically written. As soon as you read the introductory chapters you’re hooked, and desperate to know more. I really liked Rho, he is kept a bit of a mystery in the story – we’re never entirely sure what he’s running from – but he’s a very likeable character. The story focuses more on Raleigh, but it would be interesting to see how Rho’s story develops in the future books in the series. The two characters work very well together, and I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops. Raleigh is strong and clear headed, she makes for a very interesting character to read about.

There is plenty of tension and stuff going on in The Designed, it keeps building up and building up to a crazy cliffhanger – which is all I will say about it. It’s an exciting read that will definitely leave you hungry for more. There’s also lots of science and medical stuff thrown in, which makes the book feel more realistic, and the idea of Lucidin being possible feels a lot more authentic.

The book does have shifts in point of view between Rho and Raeleigh, and I know for some people that can be very disorienting. I however liked the shifts, but would have liked to know more about Rho’s background. The Designed is interesting start to a very promising series, and I’m sure it will have you hooked from the outset.

Raleigh Groves has suffered for years from an unexplained illness that causes her to blackout, usually at the worst possible times. She also has a knack of knowing other peoples ailments, from asthma to cancer and everything in between. She finally meets a man who explains that her body produces a drug called Lucidin. This drug, Lucidin is coveted by the medical profession as well as drug dealers and addicts. Along the way, Raleigh meets a cute boy named Rho. Rho has been on the run because of the Lucidin that runs through his system. Although Raleigh has been told otherwise, Rho convinces her that he is one of the good guys and she is being fed a bunch of lies. But who should Raleigh trust?

The Designed for the most part was a thrilling and exciting read. I had a difficult time knowing who to trust as one minute, the scientists seemed to be the good guys and the Designed the bad guys and the next minute vice versa. I was still on the fence on who to trust even as I read the last page of the first installment of this series. The plot was well-written and the story for the most part flowed smoothly. There is a lot of medical jargon, so fans of medical science/fiction thrillers will probably enjoy this story. This is a fairly ‘clean’ novel as there aren’t a lot of sexual moments or swearing. For those who might have an issue, there is a small part dealing with an alternative lifestyle – nothing graphic – but I just needed to throw it out there as a warning for others that like to stay clear of books with this subject.

Overall, this was a really good solid start to what appears will be a thrilling series.

I love a good science fiction story that is not too outlandish or far-fetched. The Designed is one of those; while some of it seems out of the realm of possibility, it is still written in a way that makes it more believable.

Raleigh is a young woman who has been suffering from unexplained blackouts for years. She finally discovers the reason for her illness is a drug that her own body makes. It also allows her to sense others and even find diseases within them. When she leaves her home to get treatment for her condition, she meets others who also produce this drug. And then she learns how dangerous it is and how much more she is capable of.

I quickly got sucked into this world where the drug, Lucidin, is a valuable commodity desired by addicts and scientists alike. Interesting revelations are revealed throughout as Raleigh changes from an innocent and naive girl to someone who now sees life through a darker and harsher light.

Rho's character was very intriguing, and his concern for Raleigh was genuine. When Raleigh meets the enemy, everything becomes more gray, and it's difficult to see who's in the wrong and who's in the right. But Rho had me on his side the whole time regardless. And the ending was very intense...

I highly enjoyed this story, and now I can't wait until the next book comes out!

The Designed is a great little Sci Fi, that is hard to put down. The book is fast paced, with plenty of action and excitement throughout. I'd say any one, male or female, will find something they enjoy when they read it.

The main characters where very shallow, so we never really had a chance to get to know them. For me that spoiled things a little as I like to be able to imagine myself in a story and that was impossible in The Designed. However, I was able to imagine some of Raleigh's decisions and her fear for Rho, to the extent that I shouted at her once or twice. She's a very fast decision maker, too fast I'd say.

There where times when the author engaged in some head-hopping, which did cause some confusion as I lost track on who was saying or doing what, but hey that happens in life, so no real biggy.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next. So whoever you are, take a look at The Designed and see what you think. Enjoy!

I received a copy of "The Designed" by Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review. This book is part of a series. I really enjoyed this book. This is one of my favorite genres. Think of "The Giver" or "Divergent". The characters are interesting, and the plot line is fast moving. There is no swearing, there is some sexual references, nothing explicit. For my Christian followers there is talk of an alternative lifestyle. I can recommend for ages 17 and up due to content. Now I have to pretend to be patient until the next book is out.

I wasn't really sure what was going on with this when I got it from Story Cartel, but I'm glad I did. It was a fun, quick read. Reminded me a little bit of a more simplistically written YA version of a Michael Crichton novel. I really enjoyed the character and relationship building, and that it didn't devolve into sex was appreciated. It doesn't have a cliffhanger ending but it does leave it open for a sequel which I would certainly be interested in reading.

First, I have to say I am related to the author-but she does a great job of having believable dialog, and motivations for characters-it's so nice to not see 'Evil-bad, Good-good' all the time. And I so rarely see good science fiction these days, and I also hope that 'Lens' will make it into the published world too!
The story did sweep me along; and I hope to find out what happens with/to Hailey (hint, hint). A really interesting take on mental powers and biochemistry. Thanks!

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book

Teenager Raleigh Groves has an unexplained illness. Doctors are baffled as she faints with no logical medical reasons. They are not able to come up with a diagnosis. Raleigh wants to go to college in the fall , but her family is worried because of her medical issues. Raleigh also has a gift for sensing illness and feelings in others. Her Uncle Henry puts the illness with her ability together and calls in a specialist who diagnosis her with over productivity of the drug Lucidin.

Rho also produces an increased amount of Lucidin. In fact, his Lucidin is desired by doctors, addicts, and dealers. The drug, known as Lucid, is sold at high prices on the black market. After he wakes in a hospital bed hooked up to a machine that is taking his Lucid and slowly killing him, Rho detaches the IV and runs for his life.

The book is fast paced as we learn about Rho’s brothers’ who also produce excessive Lucid and Doctors that are working to obtain the brothers. It quickly becomes a book about trust.

Should Raleigh trust Rho? Should she trust the doctors? She is running out of time as she is faced with both the brothers and the doctors.

Kate Tailor’s first book in the Designed series is a fascinating and quick paced read that keeps you guessing. There is a great deal of detail put into the medical explanations of the drug everyone seeks. The book leaves you wanting more. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

The book starts out introducing the reader to Rho and giving a brief but intriguing look at what those with Lucidin in their system are running from. Just enough info is given that you know he is capable of taking care of himself, but you also feel bits of his vulnerability.

Next up we quickly meet Raleigh, and learn of her "disease" which is a double edged sword. Blackouts that have taken their toll on her ability to have a normal teen life and abilities that doctors wish they could have. It turns out that Raleigh and Rho have one thing in common, the Lucidin. They are both prime prey for those who want the chemical.

There is so much more to this story and is so hard to review without giving away spoilers. The characters start off a bit underdeveloped but over time, as the author gives you more info the characterization also builds up, giving them a life of their own. There is secrets, scandals, and so much more. A true page turner of a story that will make you thing while keeping you guessing.

This book is for anyone that likes a good science fiction read that also delves into the world of genetic sciences. A good what if type of read and one that will make you want the next book now. I look forward to reading further on with this series and whatever else the author publishes.

Indie books are a mixed bag. You have books like Angelfall, which is the most amazingest book ever, and you have books like Insanity (Mad in Wonderland), which is most decidedly not amazing. This book just happened to roll off the right side of the bed.

The plot was well-paced and gripping, so much so that I finished The Designed in a day, and the ending was definitely unexpected! I liked living in Rho and Raleigh's heads, although the unexpected shifts in POV were a tad annoying. And I could believe in the world that Tailor created. But what really made this book 4 stars for me was its treatment of the so-called villains. Tailor knows that the world isn't black and white, and she shows that here by telling the versions of both the "hero" and the "villain" in a way that is believable and made me feel for both of them. And that is a rare accomplishment worthy of another star.

Wow.
I am rarely into science fiction but this book caught my attention and held it throughout the entire time I was reading it. Now, I am really excited to read the second book in the series. The Designed not only has well-developed characters, it also poses questions that a reader could contemplate on.

In my case, I had a lot questions and concerns in my head especially with regard to the most-valued commodity in their area: Lucidin. It's both a cure and a curse to those who have it. The problem that these Lucidin-carriers face is who to trust.

If you are into science fiction, then The Designed is one you should not miss.
