My sole purpose is to enforce order in the chaos of the criminal world, to make sure that those who break the rules pay for their transgressions with their money or with their blood. There is no room for me in the “real” world.
Still…
When I look at her, her gentle smile, her beautiful brown skin, and the soft, beckoning curves of her body, I can’t help but dream… It’s foolish; she’s too innocent, too kind for a monster like me, so I’ve been content to watch her from afar.
And then one day she spoke to me, and I knew my life—and hers—would never be the same…
First off, I really like this story. It was quick and to the point.
The Enforcer takes care of business. Never letting his feelings get involved. He never plants roots as he knows his life will not end in the happily ever after rainbow world.
Until he sees her......Miss April.
He is pulled into her with a force he is not sure he likes but he accepts it. Their relationship is simple, not many words, a few smiles until a night she is almost robbed. This changes things fast.
Following her home to make sure she is safe their attraction is released and full of heat.
He knows their relationship can't work. He can't bring her into his dirty world. She is to pure and beautiful to colored with his dark life.
April is faced with The Enforcer's dirty life head on. She must make a choice even if he knows he should walk away.
4 stars in my eyes is really good but this could have been 5 stars if and this is where my star giving got tricky for me......
1. The Enforcer.....WE NEVER LEARN HIS NAME....come on...I need Mr Sexy Darkman to have name!
2. April is a "plus sized' gal. Ok...who cares...she is still awesome and amazing just like skinny blonde white girls. Do we really have to hear how soft and thick her tummy and thighs are over and over again. I get it...she likes her pie and fills her clothes out nicely.....NOT SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE REPEATED OVER AND OVER AND OVER. April "got back"....YOU GO GIRL!!!
3. Too short of a story....I need more of the Enforcer and his dirty deeds, more of The Enforcer and April....MORE EVERYTHING!
Overall...great quick read in a series called Men Who Thrill. I will definitely be reading the other books.
reread 2/20/2017 - The enforcer's name was never given in this book but that alone made his more endearing as the anti-hero. So Mr. No-Name was so protective of April. He wanted her safe and protected from the bold unmasked teenage thugs who tried to rob her in her place of business at closing!
'“I won’t call,” she said, “but I guess I should…” She trailed off. And when she turned to look at me, the fear in her eyes caused a stinging pain in my chest. And it stirred an unfamiliar—and undeniable—need to protect her, ease that pain, make her feel safe.'
Still my favorite of the Men of Thrill series
Kate Blue's hero and heroine stays with you to the point where you have to continue reading the whole series! On to the next MEN OF THRILL!!!!
So this is my second novel by Kaye Blue. And I loved it here's why... We all have to abide by rules and regulations it doesn't matter if your squeaky clean or dirty scum rules are rules and when rules are broken especially for those who are The underbelly of society. There has to be a consequence and that comes in the form of the enforcer our antihero in the story. Now from what I can remember we never actually get the name of this enforcer but we know that he falls in love with April. And he is a deadly force to be reckoned with. However he never shows this side of himself to April. With April he is allowed to escape the enforcer a role that is every fiber of his being. He knows this is a lost cause but he still indulges in the fantasy. Until his two lives meet unexpectedly. This is a short story that can be read very easily and an afternoon or an evening I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the author doesn't get into A backstory for any of the characters I'm OK with that.
I am so loving his authors. I am so glad I found her and took a chance on her work.
I loved this story and wish I knew The Enforcer's name but no matter it did not detract from the story at all. I am going to get all the other books in the series.
I'm not the biggest fan of single POV books because it feels more like telling vs. seeing, and the true interaction between people is at a minimum. With that said, this book wasn't bad at all. I got a bit annoyed with the constant mentioning of April's size, and I never dig vague descriptions of the characters, but the story was well-paced and was full of moments that makes you want to keep reading.
Shorter book, but I loved this story and wish I knew The Enforcer's name but no matter it did not detract from the story at all. The story is about a man who is enforcer for the mob and woman who owns the coffee shop he frequents. Circumstances cause him to save her one night, but him saving causes unforeseen consequences.
I live and work in the shadows. Emotionless. Ruthless. Unforgiving. It's my job to administer pain when needed though some may feel it's just vigilante mob rule justice. No matter. I get the job done.
I am the Enforcer.
* * * *
Warning: The contents in this story are dark, graphic, and contains scenes of violence, with a healthy dose of romantic eroticism that compliments the story line. Consider yourself warned.
Told in first person male POV this story lacks depth or emotional embellishments. And you know what? That works so well for this theme and content. The focus surrounds a mob enforcer so I totally am on board with the lack of having the main character have any real emotion other than loyalty to his boss and contempt for those who screw with his own perception of morality. The new onset of affection and love into this equation.... priceless.
The issue I have are more the case that April was problematic for me. Only so far in that this WAS a short story and therefore lacked the ability to showcase her more but still I really would have appreciated her role in this story more if that had been done.
I am a fan of this book and will actively be looking for the follow up installments in the series. The author has found an effective voice in portraying mob life and love that worked well. I'm even on board with the ending though the inner romantic in me wasn't so much. To each their own but I do want to make sure that anyone considering this book realize it's dark and disturbing but for those fans of the antihero flavor, I'd recommend checking this out.
This was a very quick read. I finished it in about two hours. Kaye blue is becoming a better author as she continues to write. The story is about a man who is enforcer for the mob and woman who owns the coffee shop he frequents. Circumstances cause him to save her one night, but him saving causes unforeseen consequences.
I didn't enjoy how the story ended. It left me unfulfilled. It left too many questions and they can't be answered in the next story.
Now this is how you write a shorter book. Take a straightforward scenario, populate it with a few notable characters, give the H and h some time (but not too much!) and then give them a push. No need for deep back-stories, or complex motivations. Even the ending, though abrupt, was believable.
This was...a mess, honestly. The writing was the flowing, break-neck pace that I've come to expect from Kaye Blue, and most of the time, I'm fine with that. This book was told from one pov, which was a huge improvement for me. I really, really hate alternating povs outside of space operas or other books that cover a vast area or time because the characters are usually together. I can get beyond it most of the time, when I have to, but I don't really like it. Especially if it doesn't add anything to the story, but I digress.
So, while I did enjoy one part of it (besides the sex), there was a huge part missing. Like, character motivation. The dude is a mob enforcer, presumably by choice, so....why? How did he get involved? Did they offer a great 401k? Dental work? What? He said explicitly that he doesn't want to be the boss, so....what's the point? You just like beating people up?
He laments not having a normal life and often goes to a diner to have a piece of pie and a cup of coffee. Not because he wants the food, but because the woman he's infatuated with smiled at him once. Okay, creepy, but why do you like her, guy? You only know her name and that she works at the diner. She could be a rotten human being and kick puppies but because she smiled at you One. Damn. Time. you've convinced yourself that she's a goddess come to walk amongst mortal men and feed them diner food? Okay, really creepy, but what's the endgame? She's too good for you so you're just going to continue to stalk...watch... her from afar and imagine a life in which you didn't make the choices you did? Okay, pointless.
This wasn't a Man Who Thrills. He was the opposite. A Man Who Bores.
Who says formulatic is awlays a problem? Not me...I know what I like in my books and Kaye Blue will deliver everytime. Dangerous hero with ties to the underworld? Check! Curvy heroine who is sucked into the crime world? Check! Instant attraction? Check!! Sizzling sexual tension? Check!! Gratifying climax? Check! Glimpse into the world of organized crime? Check!! I cannot complain when I get an erotic interracial story where the hero is dangerously sexy, the heroine is sweet with a dark past and I get to watch the fireworks when these two meet. In every book the juxstaposition of the lethal vs. the innocent is a winning combo. I like how the men are bad and they own it. The women are drawn to these men but do not try to change them. Their love must survive in a world full of blood and death.
Some books stood out to me more than others: Keep, Possess, Fall, Reign, The Enforcer and more. Least favorite so far: Avenge, war, the wedding, Redeem
This was a bit of a let down from Kaye Blue, of whom I've become such a big fan. I wanted to invest in these characters but I felt like I didn't really know them. I also didn't like that we didn't get into April's head more. I do like that this author writes women with unexpected bits of bite to their personality, and I love that April chose life with her guy in the end. But all I could think when I finished was that I wished it was longer and we'd gotten more story. What there is of a story is solid but didn't feel enough.
This Short Story Will Keep You Wondering About What Happens After It’s Over!
I hope the dirty cop gets what he deserves. I hope the Enforcer and April remain safe and able to find a new life and are not discovered. I wish there was more to this story, because my enquiring mind would like to know. This quick read had me anxious for more. You had me rooting for the bad, guy who lived by his own honorable code.
After leading us on this walk through darkness the Enforcer finds his ray of sunshine. Darkness encroaches on that light and things get crazy. Did the Assistance Chief Shaughnessy want April for himself ? Did Shaughnessy think that he could double cross the Enforcer and his boss and live to tell about? The Enforcer took a love little for himself. Loose ends galore.
Bueno, pintaba mejor de lo que fue, una historia más, similar a muchas otras pero le faltó mucho para mi. O será que en cuanto a mafia, sicarios y demás me he vuelto muy exigente… ahí lo dejo
Short read, great for pulling you out of a reading slump
The hero's name isn't mentioned to the reader & the story is from his perpective only, there's a few editing mistakes, not enough to pull you out of the story but this is a pet peeve of mine, some parts felt like I was reading a draft but this is short erotica so my expectations weren't big 😂
This is the first time reading a novel by this author but not the last and I'm looking to read more from her/him. I don't feel like we got to witness enough of the relationship buildup to make me invested in the couple. I found this book to be fast paced and really enjoyed the scenes between the two of them as they got more and more involved with each other. The story line was OK but left the reader confused at times. There were some small parts that were skimmed over that I wish we would have gotten a stronger conclusion to(nothing major) or explain more but nothing that took away from the story.
I've read all the books in this series and this is without a doubt my absolute favorite. You could actually feel the love this man had for his woman and how deep complete and forever this was for him. To love someone and accept it because actually you can't fight it when before that was your life to fight against anything and everyone is epic just loved it more please!!
I like Kaye Blue's style and her books are getting better and better. Don't like multi-part stories but she comes out with them pretty quick. This book was about a man who's life was about violence but met someone special who he wanted to change for, unfortunately it wasn't that easy. This is a shorty so be warned about that.
This is a well written short story. It took me less than two hours to read it. The MC is a great anti-hero. However, as far I remember we never get his name. I would have loved to know his name. The ending left me unfulfilled. Left a lot of questions. This book would be a great trilogy instead of a stand alone.
I generally stay clear of reading material shorter than a hundred pages because most of the time it ends in a cliffhanger or there is no plot at all. I was happily surprised by this one. It accomplishes a great deal in eighty pages. I loved that it had a realistic ending as well. It's not white picket fences for a mob enforcer, it's raw and it's real.
This is one cool sexy story done so well it reads like an old gangster novel.I love how the writer wants you to use your imagination along with hers so you can see the events unfold in your mind.A really good story and a sexy read.
Nice concept, though the author seems better at writing steamy romance than action scenes. I would have like a little more action and peril, it makes the romance seem more intense. Otherwise a quick fun read.
