As an assistant in a busy London morgue, Leonora Spencer is accustomed to death. But she is astonished when a woman who has been declared dead and delivered to an undertaker is discovered to still be very much alive. Even more revolting is the scheme Leo and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid uncover. It appears the woman’s new husband planned her death for months—and she might not be the first wealthy spinster he married with an aim to kill.
Although Jasper hires Leo as a private consultant to help track down the wicked husband, he is reluctant to let her assist him with yet another inquiry. His cousin, Andrew Carter, has made contact at last with a demand that Jasper locate another missing man…or risk the full exposure of his blood ties to the criminal East Rips gang.
When Jasper and Leo’s investigations lead them to one of the city’s most successful private inquiry agencies, they decide to work together. But the closer they get to answers, the more Jasper believes his unwanted family bonds will never allow him and Leo an ounce of peace or safety.
Hazard of the Pursuit is the sixth book in Cara Devlin’s romantic historical mystery series set in Victorian London. The Spencer & Reid Mysteries are perfect for fans of Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and readers of Irina Shapiro and Deanna Raybourn.
Cara is an author, reader, and history lover. She reads and writes across genres, but her heart is reserved for romantic historical fiction and mystery. Her Bow Street Duchess books are fast-paced historical mysteries featuring a slow-burn romance taking place in Regency London. The series begins with Murder at the Seven Dials. Cara lives in rural New England with her family, where she is at work on her next series, the Spencer & Reid Mysteries.
Enjoying this series so much. We are still being edged with the romance more than I’d like, but that’s just me being impatient. The mystery was interesting and I’m intrigued by the mobster villain in this series and hope he gets his own book, even though he’s a bad bad boy.
Can’t wait to read the next one.
************************ Wooohooo! Got the arc! Let’s gooooo!
Leo is visiting her uncle, who now works at a funeral home, when one of the corpses starts moving and moaning 😱
It turns out Augusta was unsuccessfully poisoned by her husband, who is now missing. So there’s a murder mystery, but no murder victim. In addition, Jasper’s cousin Andrew needs his help to find his missing nephew and Jasper is not exactly in a position to refuse.
I spent a lot of time guessing whether the two cases were connected and how. I was wrong about pretty much everything here 😃
I love how Leo and Jasper’s relationship is developing. Leo is very independent and I love the way she puts Jasper in his place. They could be moving faster, but I understand that respectable people at the time couldn’t jump each other’s bones just like that. So I’m patient.
The writing was great as always and this book was a lot of fun to read. I adore these characters and I always look forward to new books in this series.
I’m extremely curious about Jasper’s evil cousin Andrew. I already said that and I’ll say it again; I would totally read a mafia romance about him. Villain redemption stories are the best and I see a lot of potential here 👀
Thanks to the author for the arc, all opinions are my own.
Leonora Spencer is no stranger to death as an assistant in the London morgue. Imagine her shock when the latest dead body is of a woman who is very much alive. Leo and Detective Inspector Jasper find out that she is yet another victim of a man, her new husband, who has been marrying spinsters and killing them.
Meanwhile, Andrew Carter finally makes his demand. He wants Jasper to find a missing man or risk his true identity being revealed. Jasper and Leo have to solve both cases while ensuring they stay alive.
The story comes in Leo and Jasper’s third-person POVs.
My Thoughts
The sixth book in the series is not a standalone. Start from the beginning. You’ll enjoy them all (and support an indie author). This isn’t the last book either, since the seventh is scheduled for an August release (this could be the finale). No complaints. I love both the MCs.
The premise is intriguing enough that I was tracking all clues and suspects in parallel. While I did wonder about the culprit, it came around differently. I like how it is done.
The case is not overly complex, but with cases to deal with and not enough clues in either, the duo has to spend time going around, discussing, talking to people, etc.
It’s really good to see them work together in this one. Of course, with the MMC’s protective instincts and the FMC’s stubbornness, there’s enough friction to prevent it from becoming too bland or dull. That said, the FMC has mellowed a little, probably coz the MMC is not blocking her attempts to help him as he used to do it earlier.
What makes me happier is that I was right about the other bad guy! I just knew it. He is the kind of morally grey hero popular in fiction (turns out I’m not the only one, and many others like me want him to have his own book).
The romance has teeny development. Since we are staying true to the period, things are progressing a bit slowly. There could be something more significant in the next book. I hope so! It’s not a long wait, so that’s a relief.
To summarize, Hazard of the Pursuit is entertaining from start to finish and sets a steady pace with mystery, tension, suspense, and a bit of romance.
My thanks to the author for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
I enjoyed this book more than book 4 (I plan to read book 5 soon). This story was easier to read, it flowed better and it kept my interest all the way through.
We see very little of Mrs Zhao and Connor in this book. Connor does make a token protest about Leo spending so much time away from work at the beginning of the book and then pretty much disappears. There is one mention about Leo going into do paperwork on a Sunday to catch up.
It seems as if Leo is getting herself set up as a private inquiry agent so I wonder if she will end up doing that.
I did like that a friend mentioned to Leo about getting married and having babies and asked what will you do then? Leo clearly hadn’t thought about having to look after children while still wanting to work on investigations. I hope she can juggle that better than she has juggled looking after her Aunt Flora.
Leo was not as annoying in this book as she was in earlier books. She is still impulsive and strong willed but isn’t throwing herself heading into danger as much as she was before. That is a relief, I was getting tired of her being stupid and selfish. She is a nicer person now.
The mystery was a solid one, with regular clues and developments that kept me reading. Andrew Carter shows up again which is a real problem for Jasper.
I really liked the movement in the romance between Jasper and Leo. There is lots of kissing and their love is clearly evident and acknowledged between them. I think we will see major developments in the next book. I felt a bit badly for Jasper’s embarrassment at having to decline a potential romance which would help his career.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I don’t feel I missed much by skipping book 5 since Devlin gave background context, which helped a lot.
I suspect the next book will bring the series to a close so I’m looking forward to seeing how things work out.
I received an ARC of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This series is rapidly moving towards a conclusion, but the pace isn't slowing down at all! We get two mysteries in this book along with developments in Leo's home life and more wonderful progress of the romance between Leo and Jasper. This might be one of my favorite Spencer and Reid Mysteries yet!
We dive into the first mystery when Leo visits her uncle, now working for a funeral home, and realizes someone who was just delivered to the home isn't dead! The woman was poisoned by her husband, who robbed her and fled. Leo and Jasper chase down the missing husband and uncover a confidence plot that has targeted lonely, single women. This one kept me guessing and there's some off-page action that gives Jasper the information he needs to interrogate a witness and get a confession.
The second mystery involves the missing member of Jasper's birth family. He feels beholden to his cousin, Andrew, who is one of the leaders of the family gang, but this storyline involves a rival gang and Jasper is reluctant to let Leo get involved. Leo obviously won't be left out, which leads to some tension between our courting couple. Of course they talk things out (no miscommunication for these two, thank goodness). While all doesn't end exactly well for the mob families, Jasper seems to be more seriously considering leaving London to escape his family's influence.
There are some sweet moments between Leo and Jasper in this one. They are having trouble moving slowly at this point and that makes for some entertaining scenes when they manage to be alone.
I don't know if this series is slated to be seven or eight books, but I'm excited to see how the family conflicts, both Leo's and Jasper's, are resolved!
A dead woman who is not dead raises the eyebrows of Leonora Spencer. Leo is having lunch with her uncle at the undertaker’s he now employed by when a basket recently brought in by two delivery men began to move. Leo opens the lid to be confronted by a woman who definitely is not dead. Leo sends a strange note to Scotland Yard where Detective Inspector Jasper Reid receives it. Jasper is currently courting Leo. “A detective is needed at Tate’s Funeral Service on James Street. A woman’s corpse arrived. I suspect poison. P.S. She is not dead.” A new mystery ensnares Leo and Jasper that will lead to them uncovering a pattern of disturbing occurrences. On the personal level the pull between Leo and Jasper is undeniable but how will it be resolved? And that’s not even mentioning Jasper’s unwelcome ties to the East Rip. Another succinct and lively read from Cara Devlin.
Many thanks to the author for this ARC Please note: Quotes taken from an advanced reading copy maybe subject to change.
Another outstanding story in this series. Leo and Jasper continue to solve crimes in London with amazing results. Jasper is a detective at Scotland Yard. He knows Leo as she and Jasper were saved by an Inspector from Scotland Yard. Jasper was raised by the Inspector while Leo went to live with her uncle and aunt. They are both very astute in figuring out puzzles and connecting the dots to find the culprits. Early London was not forgiving and they were caught in many scary and dangerous situations. The story will keep you reading to find out how it will all end.
"Hazard of the Pursuit", Cara Devlins' latest in the 'Spencer & Reid Mystery Series' has checked all the boxes for mystery, plot twists, and intrigue, with a healthy dusting of danger and romance for the leading characters. Subtle hints throughout kept this reader wondering which character would be revealed as the murderous villain(s). As always, this ending had epic plot twists adding a fair amount of suspense and surprise to the outcome. What will the leading characters be doing next?!
Once again, it was a pleasure to meet Leo and Jasper. We've grown quite attached to them. So, when they are threatened, we can’t help but hold our breath. As usual in this series, instead of one mystery to follow, we are rewarded with two. Jasper and Leo try to solve the case of a nearly dead woman, which turns into a murder case, but not of the person you would expect. Meanwhile, Jasper is privately investigating another murder and struggling to free himself from his past. I can’t wait for the next episode! I was given an ARC of the book and reviewed it honestly.
I loved this. I am so captivated by Leo and Jasper the books always seem to fly by so fast. They mystery really good again. Layered and interesting how it brought in parts of their personal life as well. I do want more of the romance, but I loved the ending when Jasper was yearning for the sweet moments that marriage would bring them not just lustful time. Leo's personal life with her family is so intriguing and I think something that is relatable. I know Andrew, the mobster, is a bad guy but I am really into him. I wouldn't mind a side story with him as the main character.
I am sad cause it feels like the end will be coming soon to this series but also that makes me happy cause I assume it means Leo and Jasper will get their HEA. I can't wait for the next one.
I could not put this book down, I thoroughly enjoyed the story line, the way the book was written. I will admit I had not read the first 5 books and I found u didn’t have to BUT I will be going back to the beginning to find out how the characters got to where they are now.
Plus I can’t wait for book 7.
Beautiful characters!
Excellent read!

"Hazard of the Pursuit" is book six in the Spencer and Reid Mystery Series and the author has delivered a well written and captivating story once again. The story takes off with a twist in the first chapter with a not-so-dead body at the funeral home where Leo’s uncle works. Leo and Jasper work together on this one as it becomes clear there is more to this story than appears on the surface. Jasper is reluctantly drawn into the Carter family drama too and that part of the story comes to an unseen and yet satisfactory ending for the reader. I cannot say more or it would spoil the story.
I enjoy the growing and deepening relationship between Jasper and Leo. Their characters are well drawn and their interactions realistic and intriguing. The mysteries they solve together help them learn more about each other and what they truly value in a partner.
I totally recommend this historical mystery and cozy romance series.
I always “inhale” the novels by author Cara Devin, and then go back and read them again and again. They are that engaging, compelling and professional written. Now I anxiously await book seven in the series.
4.75 stars

Hazard of Pursuit by Cara Devlin is another standout installment that proves why this series continues to shine. Once again, I could not put it down. Leo and Jasper weave their way into readers’ hearts as they join forces again in a gripping tale of deceit and murder that have personal consequences .
The story is fast-paced and action-packed, skillfully blending romance with intrigue. The author takes readers on a true rollercoaster ride, full of clues, red herrings, plot twists, and a wide cast of characters that keep you guessing at every turn. As always, the characters are allowed to grow naturally throughout the story, adding depth and authenticity. It is done so well you feel the characters are people you know.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect is how this installment leaves the door wide open for what’s to come. With lingering questions and tantalizing possibilities, readers are left eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Leo and Jasper’s journey, one we can’t wait to occur. Devlin has once again proven her ability to craft a story that is not only thrilling in the moment but also deeply satisfying as part of a larger,
Another brilliant instalment in the Spencer and Reid mysteries. A great interwoven crime to solve and it also moved the romance along as well. No spoilers but loved the last couple of chapters for Leo and Jasper. I cannot wait for the next instalment.

I've read all the books in the series and this one is the best. I liked it because it moved along quickly, story elements were clear, and the heat between the main characters ramped up. This series is set in Victorian London and is about a woman who works in a morgue and a man who is a police detective. If you haven't read the series, I highly recommend it, especially this book.
A young woman who works at the mortuary acts as a agent with the police. She discovers A scheme where a woman is poisoned by her husband. This is an excellent example of a historical mystery. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I have enjoyed all of the books in this Spencer &Reid series. Great setting ,appealing main characters and interesting whodunit plots. As soon as I finish one book, I eagerly await the next one.
Jasper and Leo strike again! Leo and Jasper certainly get caught up in some interesting suspenseful situations! The unfolding murder mystery and investigation kept me feverishly reading on. I really like the continuity of many story characters and situation details from previous novels. Loved the closure of some things yet others left suspiciously unresolved till the next story.

LOVE this latest installment. Multiple mysteries well told. Tension from earlier plot lines woven in. So may stolen kisses! August cannot come soon enough!! (Next installment)
ARC Review: Hazard of the Pursuit (Spencer & Reid Mystery 6) by Cara Devlin
Hazard of the Pursuit may well be one of my favourite Spencer & Reid mysteries yet. Cara Devlin continues to raise the bar with this series, delivering another intelligent, emotionally-layered Victorian mystery that balances crime, character growth, and relationship development beautifully. Once again, I loved the use of dual mysteries running in parallel. The official Scotland Yard case (involving Leo’s dramatic discovery that a supposedly deceased heiress is very much alive) is compelling in its own right and feels grounded in the period. Running alongside it is a much murkier, more personal investigation tied to Jasper’s past and his Carter ex-family’s criminal connections. The contrast between these two strands works exceptionally well, showcasing both Leo’s and Jasper’s different strengths and the complexities of the world they operate in.
What truly stood out to me in this installment was the deeper focus on Leo and Jasper’s relationship. The emotional stakes feel higher than ever, and the trust between them continues to evolve in realistic, sometimes messy ways. Jasper’s habitual instinct to protect is tested yet again, while Leo remains steadfast in her independence as a woman still navigating what it means to love someone without giving up the parts of herself she’s fought so hard to claim. Their bond feels earned, not rushed, and the way their relationship reaches an important milestone by the end of the book (in very fittingly chaotic circumstances) felt both surprising and emotionally convincing.
Leo’s family dynamics also shift meaningfully in this installment. Her Aunt Flora’s declining health and Uncle Claude’s pragmatic decisions subtly reshape Leo’s sense of stability and responsibility, adding another layer to her internal conflict around marriage and independence. These quieter, domestic moments give the story emotional gravity and contextualize Leo’s choices without neatly tying them into a bow.
If I had one small critique, it’s that I would have liked more time spent with the challenges surrounding Jasper’s past. The resolution felt slightly rushed given how intriguing that threat was. That said, this didn’t dim my enjoyment of the book; if anything, it left me eager to see how those elements may continue to echo in future installments.
Overall, Hazard of the Pursuit is a standout entry: gripping, emotionally resonant, and confidently plotted. I continue to marvel at Cara Devlin’s ability to release these books at such an impressive pace without sacrificing quality. I’m already looking forward to the next installment and can’t wait to see where Leo and Jasper’s journey leads next.
P.S. I am grateful to the author, publisher and BookSirens for giving me an advanced reader’s copy of this story for which I am voluntarily writing this honest review.
P.S. 2: If you liked this, then please check out my other book reviews of stories about strong women and their handsome sidekicks!
Cara Devlin wrote "Hazard of the Pursuit" with the purpose to immerse her readers in atmospheric London in the 188os. This is the sixth book in the Spencer and Reid Mysteries. The author's desire is to transport her readers to specific eras, in this case Victoria London. Ultimately, she wants to highlight the social and economic dangers by women in Victoria England.
Her style of writing is known as historical romance mysteries. The style is a mixture of atmospheric details and emotional stakes of period settings. Ms. Devlin explores the evolution of a partnership, Spencer and Reid, which is formed under extreme pressure. She writes in this manner to subvert Victorian stereotypes of women. At the same time, she is challenging the typical damsel in distress or sociable archetypes of historical romance.
The female lead in the story, is the antithesis of a woman in this era. Ms. Spencer has a position of a morgue assistant. She faces a unique set of professional and social challenges because of her position. This is partly due she is a woman working in a male-dominated world of a Victorian morgue. As the readers may come to realize, in the past and even today women have had difficulty breaking the glass ceiling in science. This is certainly true for Spencer. She must learn to navigate in this field of science. Often, her insights were often ignored by other investigators until she was proven correct.
The Victorian Era is considered a perfect storm for the story. The extreme contradictions in society provides the necessary conflict for the mystery and romance in the story. One of the contradictions is science vs. tradition. The Victorian Era marked the origins of forensic science. Forensic science challenged the old-fashioned time honored causes of death. This is one of many contradictions in the story. As the reader, see if you are able to ferret out the other ones.
The author employs the social issues of the day as the engine of your plot. The social issues include: 1. Marital "Civil" Death 2.The Stigma of being a spinster. 3. Glass ceiling for women. 4.The Bloodline trap 5. The Great divide in society
The story is a gritty Victorian mystery. The author immerses the reader in "grounded realism." The portrayal of Leo Spenser is a strong and tenacious woman. She is her own person who is brilliant in her field and is willing to stand up for which she believes is correct. The story centers around a serial killer who is targeting wealthy spinsters. You will be rewarded once you read the first words of the story to the last one. Prepare yourself for a journey through the underbelly of London usually not mentioned in proper society.
Thanks to the author and Bookfunnel for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
This is the next installment of this historical mystery series and progresses Leo and Jasper's relationship, as well as their lives as established earlier in the series.
Leo continues her official work as the assistant to the coroner, now in an official, paid capacity. Her uncle, having lost his job as assistant coroner, is now working part of the time for a mortuary, preparing bodies for funerals. Between them, and the beloved Mrs. Zhao, Jasper's housekeeper, they continue to care for Leo's aunt, whose dementia is progressing. This is a fraught and difficult relationship for Leo. But it is becoming more obvious that despite their arrangement, that Uncle Claude may have to consider alternate arrangements for his wife as her condition worsens. This all means changes in their lives that are difficult to face in the present.
While visiting her uncle at his work for tea one day, they are all shocked to discover that one of the dead delivered for funerary services is discovered to be very much alive; a recently married woman discovered to have been deeply drugged and left for dead. As Jasper and Leo investigate, they uncover a scheme by her husband to marry and gain her wealth, while ridding himself of the inconvenience of the wife. But things become more complex as they investigate more deeply.
In the mean time, Jasper continues his work as Detective Inspector, with the threat of his secret past causing constant stress as his worries are torn between maintaining his secrets, his professional integrity, and the safety of himself and Leo. Things come to a head when Andrew Carter demands Jasper privately investigate a family conundrum for him.
While Leo and Jasper navigate thier deepening relationship, they also must learn to navigate their boundaries as well, in terms of openess, trust, communication, and partnership. Jasper fears for Leo's safety, especially from the threat of the Carters, but Leo will not allow him to limit her and keep secrets from her as well. She also wants to more actively explore her own love of investigation as well, which causes friction with her relationship with Jasper, the coroner, and other police as well. But Jasper and Leo, no matter what, have reached the point in their relationship where they admit their love to each other and desire to seek a future together, and that includes trusting and supporting each other.
A lovely progression of their relationship, and the progression of other characters in this story, beautifully meshed with family drama, and investigations into murder and fraud schemes.
Tropes: MC's team up to solve a mystery Steam: 1-2ish Part of a series, and better if read the previous entries first.
4.5 stars rounded up. THIS is the book in the series I was waiting for. It grabbed my attention and held on from beginning to end. Suspenseful, excellently plotted, and compelling, it's the ideal companion to book 4 (book 5 was good but not great I thought).
There are two mystery plots. One involves MMC Jasper's cousin Andrew and the Carter family, bringing that tense, long-running subplot back to the foreground of the series. The other is a self-contained, twisty plot involving a woman who arrives at the morgue barely alive. The author does a spectacular job of creating a connection between both storylines and pacing them both perfectly.
Another element that was well-done was the romance between the MC's. Although I was a bit frustrated at first because the author seemed set to continue the very slow-burn vibe, the final chapters move their romance forward in a completely satisfactory way.
The only reason this doesn't get the full 5 star treatment from me was sheltered Leo's behavior around the 60% mark. She has an inability to see situations from Jasper's POV that would be highly frustrating irl; she really is out of her depth when it comes to the darker aspects of the family feud but is unable to admit it, always having to show how "strong" she is and forcing Jasper's hand in apologizing. At one point she considers that maybe his rough background has influenced his protectiveness of her--ya think? He's also been privy to riskier situations than she has owing to his line of work. I couldn't help but compare Leo to the scarred but emotionally tough protagonist in Devlin's superb standalone The Daring Times of Fern Adair (unconnected to this series but a must-read). Makes me consider the fallout once Leo finds out more about her own family.
Bottom line: a fantastic HR/mystery from beginning to end, with well-drawn characters and excellent world building. As the next book in the series may be the last, I strongly recommend that you start reading from book 1 if you haven't already.
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest, voluntary review. Thank you to the author and Book Sirens.
Another excellent book from Cara! I was randomly reading before this book arrived, and although the books I chose were good, I was waiting in anticipation for Cara’s latest installment because I knew it would be better than anything I was reading. Truly excellent books aren’t easy to find, and to me, there’s no better feeling than receiving a new Cara Devlin book…all that beautiful and weighty promise when I open the first page!
Some of my favorite unique phrases in this book are “crimp of emotion,” “punch in his pace,” “glittering perfection,” and “warmed honey consistency of her legs.” I love Cara’s visceral metaphors!
Not a complaint, but personally, I wish Leo would compromise a tad more when it comes to her relationship with Jasper. Leo defies societal expectations for women at the time (and I truly love that), but sometimes she goes too far in her obstinacy due to her tendency to overcorrect in a world where she’s had to constantly fight to crack the ceilings that are placed on women at every turn. I totally get it, but I want her to realize and feel secure in the fact that Jasper sees her true value as an equal and has proven that in many ways. When she tells him that she wants “a partner, not a protector,” I feel that *sometimes,* allowing love to protect is okay and doesn’t mean she’d be giving up her strength or independence. Most of the conflict in this book between them comes from her needing to push in almost every instance. It can seem selfish and petulant at times.
The multiple investigations in this book are original and sometimes quite funny-“Cor, it’s a live one!” The progression in Jasper and Leo’s romantic relationship is swoonworthy! I wonder if Jasper will be staying in the house on Charles Street? He feels that it’s haunted by Emmaline, the two kids, and Gregory‘s deaths. Things will be changing shortly for Claude and Flora as well, which means Leo could be on her own for a bit. Lastly, I love the progress in the Carter family storyline in this book, and even though Andrew Carter is a bad guy, I feel like there’s good in him. I’m interested to see where that backstory leads. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Cara Devlin has done it again with another magnificent Spencer and Reid mystery.
Leonora Spencer has finally found her footing at the morgue, but the crime and mysteries of Victorian London seem to pique her interest. When a woman stirs from a perceived death at Tate's funeral home, this seals Leo's staunch stubbornness to unravel the mysteries and crimes that seem to spring up in London's darkest corners. But with Leo's meddling in the dangerous underbelly of London, is her safety at risk?
Detective Inspector Reid, a steady investigator burdened by the cases of Scotland Yard, soon finds himself in a not-so-amusing situation at a funeral home with a case bordering on the fringes of a suspicious death. But with a stubborn eccentric beauty in the midst of Scotland Yard cases, would he be able to protect his headstrong beloved while also fighting the crimes that constantly find their way to his desk at Scotland Yard?
Cara Devlin narrates this thrilling and beautiful crescendo in the sixth Spencer and Reid mystery, Hazard of the Pursuit.
Hazard of the Pursuit is filled with several thrilling turns. Jasper's past trying to catch up with him, the shadow of several deaths and its criminal danger hovering around Leo, the likelihood of a familial separation; it is such a thrilling ride.
Cara Devlin has a knack for keeping the reader on their toes, constantly vying for what lies in the hidden shadows while also keeping the flames of a blossoming romance afloat. I liked how more narration is placed on Leo's and Jasper's romance. It is both realistic and heart-warming, and then the ending chapters certainly keep the reader hungry for what lies in the coming series.
If you're a reader seeking to enter a world of crime, thrilling suspense, and a tender romance, Hazard of the Pursuit is a captivating ride I highly recommend.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The beginning of Hazard of the Pursuit by Cara Devlin held quite a surprise. The first dead person in the story – was not dead. I knew immediately that Cara was going to take us for another exciting ride. The case of the “not dead” woman led to an investigation into her husband, but nothing is ever as simple as it might seem. The husband was not working alone, nor was this attempted death the first time he’s been involved in this type of scheme only before this it had been successful. As usual, one pulled thread takes Jasper and Leo deeper into the tangled mess.
Leo and Jasper are pulled into what seems to be two separate incidents. Leo begins to investigate a report of a missing woman while Andrew Carter approaches Jasper insisting that he locate Andrew’s missing nephew. Andrew is Jasper’s cousin from the family who were responsible for the death of Leo’s family. Jasper’s determination to keep Leo away from this family leads to serious conflict between the two. Also, the fact that Andrew hired him for an independent case could cause some serious problems in his job. There were a lot of different people and events to keep track of to find all the connected pieces and bring resolution to the cases. I confess that I did not figure out all the main players, which kept me on my toes.
The romance between Jasper and Leo is really heating up, which is the best part for me. However, there is an aspect of Leo that bothers me a bit. It seems like Jasper has to always be the one to compromise in their disagreements. I feel that she uses Jasper’s love for her to manipulate him into giving in regardless of how he feels about it. I’d like to see her be the one to compromise sometimes. All told, this is another great addition to the series and I’m already antsy to start the next one.
Hazard of the Pursuit by Cara Devlin Spencer & Reid Mystery #6
~ Deceit, death, and detectives who search for truth and justice ~ Leonora and Jasper are up to the task as they deal with more than one case this time ~
What I liked: * Leonora “Leo” Spencer: parents and siblings murdered when she was nine, taken in by Uncle and Aunt, morgue assistant to Connor Quinn, eidetic memory, bright, unconventional, puzzle solver, strong, not easily cowed, survivor, being courted by Jasper Reid * Jasper Reid: Detective Inspector, an orphan adopted from the streets by Chief Superintendent Gregory Reid, bright, educated, intelligent, intriguing, courting Leonora * Watching the relationship between Jasper and Leo continue to move forward * The police procedural aspects of the story and following Leo and Jasper follow the clues to find out who was killing women to steal their wealth * Jasper’s side investigation into what happened to a gangster’s relative * That the story feels “of the era” and educates while entertaining * Nivedita “Dita” Brooks: Leo’s friend, works for a private investigator, dating Connor Quinn * Connor Quinn: Coroner, works with Leo, in a relationship with Leo’s friend Dita * That all of the threads followed were neatly tied up and cases solved with no threads left hanging * The ending that sees a burden removed from Jasper’s shoulders and the positive hopeful ending
What I didn’t like * Who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how evil, amoral, ruthless, callous, and wicked some of the characters in this story were
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars
I loved this installment, it continues the Leo and Jasper romance giving us some swoon moments between the two, and it gives us a couple of mysteries to figure out.
We have the case of Augusta Lawler who was presumed dead, but woke up in a casket. Leo and Jasper work together to uncover the why and who. I thought I had this one figured out, but I was wrong.
Jasper accepts a job, to perform a "private inquiry" from his cousin, Andrew Carter. There is a missing Carter, Andrew's nephew, Cillian, and he wants Jasper to find him. Jasper, of course, can't say no.
Leo and Jasper, as a real couple, courting, have dinner with one of Jasper's fellow officers at the officer's home, with his wife and children. Thea and Leo have a discussion that starts Leo thinking.
This series just keeps getting better with each installment. Leo and Jasper, now courting, are relaxed with each other. Of course, that doesn't mean that Leo is not just as impulsive and tenacious as ever. She is a strong woman fighting the constraints of Victorian England.
Hazard of the Pursuit does not end with the traditional cliffhanger, of the previous books in the series, but Cara Devlin has provided us with an ending that needs more. (No spoilers) One question on my mind is, have we seen the end of Andrew Carter, the shadow that looms over Jasper? I can't wait for the next book, Proof of Violence, coming in August. If you are a first time reader to this series, I highly recommend going back and reading from the beginning, you will not be disappointed.

We have Lenora Spencer and Inspector Jasper Reid involved in a page turner non-stop adventure! We have a case where a hefty body is delivered but the woman is still alive! She is desperate to get word to her husband who has disappeared! As the story unfolds there are several moving pieces as always! Jasper is approached by Andrew Carter to find his missing nephew! He is the only son of Sean Carter an older, ruthless and violent gang member! When all the pieces start to lead to an agency who really wants Lenora to work for them the danger escalates! On the home front Lenora’s aunt Flora’s health is rapidly declining and a senior home is mentioned several times! The clues start to add up and all the players look familiar but as one participant lies near death Jasper missed a vital clue! A murderer won’t leave his victim alive for long and Lenora is at her bedside! When Jasper rescues Lenora yet again they race to save a life of the missing mistress of the important gang member who is now deceased! But someone is there waiting and this does not look good for anyone involved! When the smoke clears will Lenora and Jasper have a future? Lenora is wanted for her looks and her brains but Jasper is wanted to match with another woman for Jasper who just happens to be the Superintendent’s daughter! What a tangled web! I love how things are definitely heating up between Lenora and Jasper! Jasper stands by his girl and his decision which I love! Now if there is a way Andrew Carter would forget about Jasper…..maybe there is! This one will leave you on the edge of your seat! Well done!
