"Then out of the darkness, two gleaming orbs of orange light appeared and hovered directly in front of me. At first I thought they were campfires, but that was impossible—they were perfectly round. Something large and heavy uncoiled from the trees. At first, it looked to be made of wood. Then the brown bark of its skin rippled. I saw a shimmer of scales. The body of some great beast stretched above me.

The dragon stared down at me."

This is a great story of dragons, tales & legends, adventure, and magic. The dragon mentioned in the quote above is not The White dragon, it's a Mirror dragon which is just as fascinating and majestic. (The first encounter with The White dragon can be found in the Prologue. Download the free sample on Amazon or iBook store to read it!)

I'm a big fan of the author's The Cat's Eye Chronicles and I'm happy to say that this first installment in her new series didn't disappoint!

"My only strengths were in outdoor work, and those positions were limited for women. Gardening and plowing fields wouldn’t appease my restlessness. An unsettled spirit, my mother called me."

Sienna Foxburn is a very authentic character. I wouldn't call her badass, I would prefer the word skilled for now. She's fairly confident and very proficient in outdoor work such as hunting animals and climbing trees, but she also has vulnerabilities and fears. She's easily intimidated and scared at times but she always challenges herself to be better and braver. She has a newly discovered gift, an inheritance from her family which is an incredibly awesome talent. I can feel a great character development in this series just like in The Cat's Eye.

He pointed slightly to the northeast. "About a quarter-mile that way," he replied. "I saw evidence of the mirror dragon, but I was more concerned about you."

Concerned about me, I thought, and tried not to cling to that. I stared at him for a long, obvious moment.

Of course he noticed. He motioned his hand between us in a casual gesture. "This," he said quietly, "is just human nature. Don't be embarrassed."

Darius, the best dragon hunter, looks frightening and dangerous but he's not the quiet, brooding type. He's intimidating but he knows how to smile and start a conversation. I see the author's taking a different approach to relationship building, there's no existing animosity or indifference between the characters but only a hint of interest and attraction. The romance is very subtle, almost non-existent, which is a good thing because with T.L Shreffler, subtle means a slow-building and swoonworthy romance. Now I'm very intrigued and excited to see how their relationship will develop in the upcoming books!

"For the first time, I reached out and touched a dragon. Its scales were smooth and rough at the same time. I’d always imagined their bodies to be cold and slick under my hand, like a forest lizard, or a fresh-caught fish. Instead, the dragon’s skin felt hot and dry, like a sun-warmed rock."

The excellent world building combined with the author's vivid and clear writing style makes this book a very captivating read. It's very fast-paced and full of action. There's something about T.L Shreffler's books that never fails to engage my attention; the story always seems simple and ordinary at first, but as I get invested in the series, I start to notice so many layers to the story coming together beautifully. I'm already so excited to read the second book because there's no way it wouldn't be awesome after that ending!!

Overall, this book is a very delightful and promising start to another fantastic series by T.L Shreffler. If you haven't read any of her books yet, I suggest you start with The Cat's Eye Chronicles because it already has 4 published books. After that, dive into this one and suffer with me until the second book comes out!! *evil laughs*

T.L. Shreffler is the boss. She's one of my favourite authors due to the beautiful and wonderful series- The Cat's eye Chronicles So it was with a lot of anticipation that i delved into this book.

but before i get started on how i found it, let's talk plot!

"The Night my father died, I awoke to the sound of screaming. It was the first time i saw The White."

Sienna doesn't do well with rules.
She simply can't fall into the life everyone expects her to in Glenhold.
She feels more alive when she's outside in the wilderness, in the forest, in the valley.
Only one problem.
Those places are not safe.
The White is ever hunting for prey.
Sienna is blamed for the death of the future wife of the leader's son.
She is promptly exiled to a world she's never been allowed to explore.
She crosses paths with 2 warriors and a sorceress, they are hunting The White.
Now Sienna wants The White's death, the one who killed her father, the thing that got her exiled, she will hunt this thing at all cost.

Okay, I really did like this story.
Does it measure up to Sora's quest? well, now mind you it's a totally different concept and plot-line, but if you ask me was I as awestruck as i was with sora then I'll have to honestly say no.
HOWEVER, that being said, this story is still good!

Sienna isn't the strongest character, she can be reckless sometimes, but she means well and she has the courage to act when its needed. I liked these characters, I'm kind of sad that there isn't a frightening villain like Volcrian but maybe book number 2? maybe?

The supporting characters...well, they were okay.

At this point it very much feels like the beginning of a new story that will expand and get more intense in the follow-ups.

Now I know what most of you will ask, any love characters like our lovable assassin?
Well, yes and no.
Yes, there is the possibility of a romance.
No, he's not exactly like crash.
Yes, he's pretty cool in his own right.

Darius the Fire's Bane is not the brooding male hero, don't get me wrong, he still has that vibe but he isn't scared to smile sometimes, it was cute.

I will admit that I would've loved some banter or a bit more interaction with between Darius and Sienna...maybe in the next book? *nudge, nudge*

Shreffler's writing, that woman has a gift, she just draws you into her fictional world. Its amazing! love it!

That's all I'll say for now. I do want to read the second book, I'm curious at what may happen.

Stay wonderful!

In case the five or so glowy reviews before this had escaped your notice, I am a huge fan of Shreffler’s work. Her other series, The Cat’s Eye Chronicles, has a coveted seat upon my Shelf of Awesome and when I heard she was working on a book with DRAGONS I went a little spastic. This story manages a huge amount of world building, character building, and emotion in a very short space, something that impressed me greatly even with having read her other pieces. It is a fantastic story, even if it did end in a cliffhanger, and I am very much looking forward to watching the series unfold.

The plot:
Everything happens pretty quickly here, which was a nice change for me after a steady diet of epics lately. The plot progresses with only enough world building and description that is necessary (huge plus). My only question issue with this story was Sienna’s empathy toward the dragons. It’s explained, but I wanted to see just a little more expansion of the thought and feeling processes she went through before getting to that point. However, that was my one and only—I wouldn’t even call it a complaint. More like a side note.

It is mentioned somewhere that this has romantic elements, but I would say the focus here was definitely more on the dragons. (And if you have a problem with that, go away.) The general feelings of the populace toward dragons were displayed and justified well in the beginning, but I still found myself sympathizing with the dragons more than the people (which was probably Shreffler’s scheme).

The characters:
This doesn’t happen especially often, but the heroine was my favorite character. In the beginning, Sienna is going through that whole awkward “on the threshold of adulthood but has no focus” stage that I think most of us go through. That won her huge doses of empathy and she was relatable and human to me, unlike a lot of fantasy heroines that have been cropping up.

Darius, the dragon hunter, has that whole aura of mystery and awesome about him and I have lots of questions about his character. What did he do that got him made a dragon hunter? Who was he before? Like I said, lots of questions for sequels!

Mistress Ash is probably the other main character and also the villain. Everything about her creeped me out from the moment she turned up and it became clear pretty quickly that I was right about here. She was an excellent villain to this story, written to make you hate her and as far as I was concerned, she could join the chopping block queue with Cerastes and Volcrian (references to The Cat’s Eye Chronicles).

The other characters, mainly those from Sienna’s home castle, reacted in understandable ways, but…no, I’m not going to be rooting for them any time soon. On the other hand, I thought they were remarkably developed for such a short span of page time and even Sienna’s mother was portrayed as having sympathetic qualities.

All in all, this was a well-written YA fantasy I would shove in the faces of anyone who likes dragon literature. I enjoyed it greatly, it has been a delight to read, and I am anxiously anticipating the next installment in the series!

Miss Shreffler never disapppoints, authors take note, this is how you write a dragon tale! (no pun intended)

Sienna lives in a land terrorized by a dragon, they call it The White, when the king finally sends the Glenhold help to deal with the beast, Sienna finds herself in the middle of the hunt.
Now she's in for a few surprises along the way, she learns things about herself, she'd never dreamed possible. Also, she can't trust almost anyone.

Enter Darius...

What can I say about him? hmmm...
Well let's just say, nobody writes dark, mysterious characters like Shreffler. (a certain assassin comes to mind...*winks*)

I can't wait for the next leg of this adventure, to learn more about these new characters and this new world!

If you know me at all, you know I'm a huge fan, I can't recommend her books enough! If you love fantasy, check her out!
You're welcome! ;)

Happy Reading!

I love dragon stories. I grew up on the Dragon riders of Pern and will forever love dragon lore. In this story a girl gets caught up in forces outside her control. While she is on this journey she finds out she is more than she first thought. There is some minor romance, but it is a small part of the story.

The real story is the girl and the dragon. The dragon both terrifies and fascinates her. I cannot wait to read more about Sienna and Darius and the last imperial dragon.

I give this story 5 out of 5 clouds.

I admit, I did not know what to expect from this one. I WAS rather put off that it wasn't my beloved Krait's Redemption, but I somehow managed to look past this offense and appreciate it for the good book it really was. I saw it and thought, "Dragons...? Ehh..." because I thought I was way over my dragon phase by the time I was thirteen.

Well, I thought wrong!

I really, truly, genuinely liked it! No one is too old for dragons. I can see that now. ;) I actually liked Sienna, which is saying a lot, since 70 percent of book heroines suck! {And I say that with all the tender love and affection in my heart.} Sora even took some getting used to at first, though I adore her now. But I think I felt a bit of a kindred spirit in Sienna, and was duly outraged at the way her own people scorned her for crappety reasons. If that upsets me in the first book of a series, you know you done good. Typically, I won't give a flying flop about the main character's feelings until the next book, at least, so this is good progress. Sienna was strong and didn't complain all the time, like "WOE IS ME."; which I absolutely despise, even in some cases when it's justified. I'm interested in this gift she has and what it will mean for the series. But, GURL, she need to learn how defend herself, 'cuz she gone get ate. *That is my ghetto voice. Were you convinced? No? Ok.*

I also may have *ahem* shipped Darius with her immediately. *hides behind bag of Oreos I shouldn't have in my room* I normally need time to make sure the guy isn't a lying craphead before making the commitment of ship-sterhood, but I did it. And Darius MAY end up being a lying craphead. *whistles* ... Still think there should be a wedding and babies and stuff... Just me? Ok.

On the topic of THIS, I happen to think a love triangle is a splendid idea. I nominate Jordan. *He has my name! Therefore destined for GREATNESS.* Or... or not. :P AnyWAY, I don't remember what he looks like; he's new. But he sounds eligible! Beggars can't be choosers... ;) To defend myself- since most mature fangirls pride themselves in despising the oh-so-dreaded love triangle- I think triangles truly make some books great, and SOME writers can pull it off without it becoming cliché and/or obnoxious. I think T.L. COULD very well do such a thing well. We shall see.

And, if not, I'd definitely still ship Darenna. YES I DID. I HAVE NAMED IT AND IT SHALL BE MINE.

*reigns in the cray* Some of you might look at this book and be like, "Ugh! This isn't Sora and Crash! This is NOT what I wanted!" And I must say...

WHY YOU GOTTA BE SO RUUUUDE?

With THAT outta my system, I must also say, give it a chance! Our beloved Crora (and everybody else in the Cat's Eye Chronicles we secretly don't care as much about) will be over in two more books! 5 & 6! TWO more, peoples. You'll be grateful when this series is still going strong, to sustain you through the heartbreak.

And remember: T. L. has proven to be a master of the slow-burn technique. Book 1 may start out with a slower, less dramatic plotline, like TCEC, but think of all the twists and turns she has planned ahead! NOT TO MENTION THE DARENNA.

YES. YES THAT IS A THING.

*sigh* My hand is tired. Just give it a try and wait patiently for the next book! Pretty confident you won't regret it.

Night, fishies!

I went into this book on the cautious side, I'm already a pretty big fan of this author and I know that just because I liked her other works didn't mean I would like them all. Thank goodness it stuck to the fantasy genre that I loved the most so I had a extremely easy time enjoying myself and regretting that fact that it ended knowing its the first in the series and I'll have to wait quite a bit before I can continue the story.

I was't really sure about Siennas character in the beginning, I really thought she was going to be one of those whinny characters for a bit. Thank goodness she wasn't and as the story progressed I found that she was really growing on me. She know her own faults and tried her hardest to work past them. There is also a couple of surprising things that happened that involved her that made everything more interesting and pulled me deeper into the story (sorry if that sounds vague, I try my hardest to give spoiler free reviews and don't want to give things away here.)

I'm still not sure how I feel about Darius. I'm not sure if I like him or if I am still wary of him. I feel like he will end up surprise me big time. He is really intriguing to me though. I want to know more about him and his past. Mainly how he came to be what he is now.

The plot itself seemed pretty simple at the get go but got more interesting as the story moved on. It stuck to its guns and you pretty much knew how things where going to go at one point but there was still things that would pop up to put you through a loop and keep you on your toes for a bit.

There is a touch ,a small one, of romance as well. If you are like me and you like to have a little bit of romance dashed in I'm sure you will like how it was handled. There is none of the hated intsa-love here. Shreffler has a knack for being able to add this touch to her stories without it being overbearing and having it more at a nice pace.

The world itself seemed very interesting. I would have liked to learn more about the different holds and how they were run. I also wanted to know more about the religion and how they were viewed and the deeper meanings. I can't forget the dragons either, there is some stuff told about them and the different kinds but I would have like to know more (I have a little soft spot for dragons). I can say I feel like this stuff will be explored more in the books to come and I could just be feeling greedy.

There aren't any lose ends laying around, and it ends in a way that is satisfying but makes you want to come back to read the next one. All in all it was a good start to what I know is coming to become another great series.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, if your a fan of fantasy I'm sure you will like this one.

This was a book filled with adventure from the beginning. Sienna is no wilting flower, she kicks butt and stands up for herself when no one else will. I was surprised how quickly she branched out at the beginning of the book; it was very refreshing. Schreffer is also not afraid to provide the harsh realities of life. I enjoyed that the writing didn't dance around the damage that The White created. She did a great job balancing the detail without it becoming too much (as Game of Thrones can often be!).

My only complaint would the book felt like it was a little chopped at the end. There are clearly going to be subsequent books and I was left hanging. That is fine, I just wish there has been a little more of a real ending to tide me over until the next book. That being said I am certainly going to continue the series! This was one that had me glued to the book until the very end.

Warning: contains violence.

Who should read it? Adventure fans who are willing to start another series.

This book had a lot of strengths: good writing, well-established world, interesting concept. These all earned it 3 stars.

It also had a lot of weaknesses: the plot moved slowly, not enough allies, and I'm not quite sold on Darius yet. It felt like something crucial was missing in this book. Maybe it was the predictability? Or because I was never truly worried about Sienna's safety? Whatever it was, I felt too comfortable and, dare I say, a little bored with the story.

Very different from how I felt after Sora's Quest. Almost the exact opposite! With SQ, the writing and world building needed A LOT of work, but the story was so damn exciting and surprising, you couldn't help but read the next book. And the next one. And the next one.

I wonder if I'll return to the Dragon Pearl world as more books come out...

This was another amazing work my T.L. Shreffler. If you enjoy Sora's Quest, you will feel right at home with the writing style. It feels like meeting a familiar friend.

As for the story, I found it quite engaging. As I continued through the book it was more and more challenging to put down. The basic story is a good one, and the world built is beautiful and stunning, with it's own twists and turns.

I quite enjoy all the treads that have been presented for future books and look forward to reading the rest of the series (when it's available).

The White tells the story of Sienna Foxburn, a teenage girl living in the Hold, a fortress within the valley of Windridge. When Sienna was a child the Hold was attacked by an enormous dragon referred to as The White, which killed her father and many other inhabitants of the fortress. Since then the valley's residents have lived in fear that The White will return. The story begins with Sienna and her friend James encountering the dragon while exploring the valley after curfew. They escape safely, but it soon emerges that James' betrothed, Brie, went searching for him that night - she has been taken by The White, and is now most likely dead. At the same time, a group of mysterious visitors have arrived at the hold intent on hunting for the dragon. Lord Flightfoot, who rules over the fortress, orders that because he believes Sienna is to blame for Brie's likely death, she should be exiled and forced to leave with the dragon hunters.

This book is the first in a new series by TL Shreffler, who also wrote the Cat's Eye Chronicles series. Magic is a predominant feature in this series much as in Cat's Eye, but the focus on dragons has resulted in a completely different slant and allows room for the development of many intriguing sub-species. Shreffler's writing style has improved over the course of her books, and is concise with convincing descriptions and well-paced fight scenes. Her characters are convincing and encourage the reader to feel sympathetic towards them. Sienna is especially well-written - she initially comes across as extremely self-confident and courageous but over the course of the story she comes to learn just how little she really knows about the world. And then of course there is Darius, who will inevitably be compared to the dark and mysterious Crash/Viper who features in the Cat's Eye Chronicles. Darius is a dragon hunter known as the Fire's Bane - he is much older than Sienna but she is immediately fascinated by him and they become closer as the story goes on. Shreffler is a master of slow-burning romance and it's quite clear something will happen between them but there is no heady lust to distract from the main story, which is a refreshing change from a lot of YA novels.

Overall I personally didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed the Cat's Eye Chronicles - even though the characters are well-rounded and the story convincing, I simply prefer the characters and plotline of her previous series. That isn't to say this book isn't a promising start to a new series, however, and I will definitely be picking up the next one!

The beginning of another great series by one of my favorite authors. I'm already a huge fan of her Cat's Eye Chronicles and it looks like The Dragon Pearl series will be no different. The story centers around Sienna Foxburn, a young woman who doesn't feel quite like she has a place within the safe walls of her home, feeling more comfortable roaming the lands around it. I find her to be a very realistic character, she has her skills and confidence in certain areas, but she can also be a bit reckless at times and has some fears she will need to overcome. all in all, I really like her.

Then there's this awesome character named Darius. He is frightening and dangerous, but he's not the quiet, gloomy brooding type like a certain assassin from the Cat's Eye Chronicles. He smiles and even takes part in conversation. I like his character so much and look forward to his further interactions with Sienna. There is something there that piqued my interest greatly.

The White is full of action and my most favorite: dragons. Being a avid tabletop gamer, I like how Shreffler didn't go with the flow of stereotypical everyday fantasy dragons. The one that caught my interest the most was the mirror dragon. I love the concept!

The only part I didn't like what how abrupt the ending felt. I don't mind cliffhangers, but this one kind left me with an irritated feeling, like there should have been maybe a page or two more to smooth out the ending a bit. All in all, I loved it.

Now I have two series by Miss Shreffler that I am eagerly awaiting the next installments of!

I really like the Cat's Eye Chronicles series, so despite being put off that this book came out instead of Krait's Redemption, I still got it right away. And after reading it, I'm still wondering how far it set back the book I'm really waiting for.

This book started out painfully slow. Maybe it would have paced better had the first chapter begun with Sienna behind the tapestry and flashed back to anything pertinent... it just seemed like it didn't start until a quarter in. I would have liked the dragons to have been described more thoroughly as well. When she encounters the mirror for the first time, I didn't get a feel for its size, etc. It and a few other were described in relation to how they compared to horses and not much else.

Darius confused me; usually the strong and silent type, but with the occasional rogue-ish look or comment? He's still an enigma. And Sienna kept thinking things along the lines of 'Why did he do that? Certainly not because of me!' and other such silliness that just didn't otherwise sit right with my impression of that character. Even minor characters did things that left me thinking, wait. What? I didn't really connect with any of them, which always leaves a story feeling flat. The only ones I thought I even might understand were the dragons.

That said, I'd still read on, but puh-lease let us have the rest of CAC first!!

This book didn't meet my expectations I've come to expect much better from this author. It felt like I got half a story and mostly an introduction to a character and setting.
Sienna acts younger than her age and I had a hard time understanding her restlessness. At first I thought maybe she was in love with someone she knew she couldn't have, but no. There really is no reason for her irresponsible behavior. She did grow and change, but I feel she didn't have much more direction at the end of the story than she did at the beginning.
We learn very little about the supposed gift Sienna has. The fact that she's ignorant because she grew up in an isolated valley can only take a story so far. Her reactions to the dragons didn't ring true to me at all.
I do think we'll get an interesting perspective on dragons in this series, but I'm not a fan of them always being blood-thirsty killers. So I hope Shreffler has more in store for them than that, because dragon riders are awesome to follow - dragon hunters, not so much.
I don't know if I'm vested in this new series. Since I love the Cat's Eye Chronicles so much, I will likely give the second book in this one a try when it comes out. Hopefully, Sienna will prove she's a character worth caring about.

Sienna Foxburn has been hiding in her keep and minding herself ever since her father died. She hasn’t felt safe since that dreadful day. The imperial fire-breathing dragon has made that feeling spread throughout the Valley of Windrigde, and to the people there is no end in sight. But Sienna isn’t satisfied with this; she has been in hiding for too long and decides to do something about it. She decides to fight, but she can’t so it alone. With some wishful thinking four mysterious strangers show, two sorceress and two elite dragon hunters, saying they have been sent by the King to hunt The White. Is it fate, or is there something else going on? Read it
This book was very intriguing and written in true fantasy style. Having a heroin is very daring and fit perfectly! I found her inspiring. This is a coming of age tale where the young lady who has been afraid to venture out after her father’s death finds the courage to fight for what she believes in and finds herself in the process.

Dissapointing

I had high hopes for this new series, the cat's eye chronicles are one of my favorites. Sadly, the characters in this book just didn't grab me, the heroine is bland and her self pitying attitude is annoying. Seems like a super formulaic book. Girl finds out she has special powers, super hot brooding guy falls for her, for no apparent reason. The side characters were underdeveloped and I had a hard time believing the motivations for their actions ( people from the hold ). The only interesting part were the dragons. I was waiting to get swept up in a grand adventure, like I did immediately with Sora and Crash. It just never happened, there was no chemistry and I had trouble finishing the book. It's pretty sad when you feel more worry for the Dragon that is being hunted than the main characters. Sad to say this was a huge disappointment, I will not be continuing this series.

T.L. Shreffler has done it again my friends. I'm in total fangirl mode right now. I love, and I mean LOVE her Cats Eye Chronicles, and now, I've got another amazing fantasy series to follow. Shreffler writes fantasy that's not corny, badass female (and male) characters, slow-burn romances (that's right, no insta-love here guys), and just all-around intriguing plots. Her books have it all, they're written for everyone to enjoy, teen, adult, male or female. If you haven't picked her up, please do so. I don't think you'll regret it.

3 stars. Overall enjoyable read but not as exciting or addictive as the Cat's Eye Chronicles.

I guess I just didn't fall in love with the characters, Sienna annoyed me a little with her reckless behaviour and Darius remains a bit of a mystery, although I think the author has set herself a tough task of creating another guy who can live up to Crash. If you haven't read the Cat's Eye Chronicles you really need to!

Perhaps I'll warm up to it a bit more in the second installment.

A good setup for a series

A fast read with lots of dragon fighting action. Our heroine starts off w/lots of knowledge of nature, but very little of the larger politics of humanity. She is smart & becomes a fast learner of whom she can trust & what she is capable of. I sense some rollicking good adventures as she tries to figure out how to follow her moral code -- as it goes against just about everyone else's.

Quick read

This book was very entertaining and a bit more story to it than I would have originally guessed. Great characters, dangerous adventure, and Dragon magic with a hint of an inheritance gift that keeps the reader enthralled. Enjoyable story that of course will have you looking for the next book.

Another Achievement

Me. Shreffler another really exceptional storyline. I really enjoy your works. I read constantly on a small budget. I would like to see you finish a series. Do you think that might happen with your first series in the near future? I must say I am anxious to find out, though it's definitely worth the wait. Ginny

Good, but progressed slowly...

I love this author and her series the cat's eye, so I had to check out the white. I was not disappointed besides the fact that I felt hardly any t thing happened in this book! Maybe it's just me though...
Left me wanting to read next book NOW. A great story, I can't wait to see how the characters progress.

Yet another wonderful book by T.L Shreffler!

I enjoyed this book a lot. I love a good strong female lead. It was a little short, but definitely worth it! I can't wait for the next one!

Very good start

The book is a solid fantasy and a good start to a series. That being said it ends with a lack of closure because of this. If you're looking for a good sound fantasy check it out, but be ready to want more!
