Poignant, raw, honest, Songs for Mahalia is a collection of prose exploring the uncertain journey of coming of age, the inextricable ties between daughterhood and motherhood, and the lasting effect of heartbreak, despite love’s fleeting nature. Through the lens of young adulthood and Filipino heritage, Songs for Mahalia takes the reader on the long road towards self-identity, meeting powerfully vocal characters along the way and finding themselves transported into summer-struck scenes.
Songs for Mahalia is the first anthology in the Where the Seasons Take Me series. Beginning with the Summer collection, Lauren Domagas evokes imagery of oppressive heat and hometown longing.
In her first book, Lauren Domagas has brought us a beautiful collection of vignettes, each highlighting a different aspect of life, relationships, and reflections. I enjoyed each one of them. I especially liked the ones linking her to the Philippines as I could feel that the emotions run very deep in those.
Snapshots from an author's heart. I enjoyed them thoroughly, and I recommend them warmly!
