Big League Energy, Single Momma Energy, and a fake relationship shadier than a Louisiana live oak.
MONTANA
“Big Country.” That name—my name—had Dodger Stadium shaking when I won the World Series. Now they’re talking suspension? Please. I’m a national legend. The pride of NOLA. But the only thing dragging my six-foot-four frame into my Creole restaurant is her … Journey.
That woman’s a walking challenge—sharp tongue, soft smile, and eyes that promise trouble. One look from me and she fumbles that cool facade. One look from her and suddenly I’m reconsidering every rule I’ve ever followed.
So yeah, I’ll polish my image with her—and maybe blur the line between business and pleasure.

ZURI
That damn face of Montana’s? Unfair. His voice? Dangerous. His presence? A whole problem I don’t need. But when Big Country offers a contract that could change my life, I read the fine print.
Hell, he doesn’t even know my real name. My locs stay tucked under a wig that smells like coconut oil, chaos, and bad decisions. And nobody will ever know the truth about my son’s father.
But the problem isn’t pretending. It’s the way he looks at me—like he sees straight through the disguise. And if I’m not careful, he might see the woman I swore I’d never let anyone touch … again.

This brand-new, hilarious fake dating romcom will have you planning a trip to New Orleans!

The author really captured the New Orleans vibes in this one. From the food (especially the beignets), to the Mardi Gras floats and beads, and even Royal Street, the setting felt vivid and immersive. I truly felt like I was there.

Zuri, the FMC, is a single mom running from someone in her past, while the MMC, “Big Country,” an MLB player, is determined to make sure his bébé doesn’t have to run anymore. Their banter was cute, the flirting was fun, and there were sweet “aww” moments.

The spice is subtle and mostly happens behind the scenes rather than being explicit, which I honestly didn’t mind. I paid more attention to the emotional connection. The writing style took a little getting used to, but overall it was still a cute and enjoyable read.

Rating: 3.5⭐️

Big Country is Amarie Avant’s first venture into romantic comedy and it’s a promising start. The story has heart, personality, and a strong sense of place that really brings New Orleans to life.

The standout element is the banter between Montana “Big Country” and Zuri. Their exchanges are fun, carrying much of the humor throughout the story. There are moments where the pacing slows, and the plot lingers a bit longer than necessary, but the characters remain engaging enough to keep you invested.

While the story centers on a fake dating trope, that aspect takes more of a backseat than expected. Instead, the narrative leans more heavily into Zuri’s life prior to moving to Louisana and her secrets, giving the book more of a suspense vibe. Because of that, the romance develops more gently and the spice stays very light, which may work well for readers who prefer love stories with mild spice.

Overall, Big Country is a decent first attempt at romcom with likable characters and moments of fun banter. A solid 3.5⭐️ read that shows potential and leaves me curious to see how the series will continue to evolve.

I Love Big Country!!!!

Big Country by Amarie Avant is a powerful, emotionally rich story that pulls you in from the very first page and doesn’t let go. Amarie's writing is vivid and immersive, bringing the setting and characters to life in a way that feels raw, real, and deeply human.
The characters are layered and relatable, and the emotional journey feels authentic rather than forced. There’s a beautiful balance between tension, vulnerability, and growth that keeps the story moving while still giving you moments to pause and really feel what the characters are going through. The themes of resilience, identity, and connection are woven seamlessly into the narrative.
What truly stands out is Amarie's ability to tell a story that lingers with you long after you’ve finished the last page. Big Country isn’t just a book you read—it’s an experience. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy stories with heart, depth, and unforgettable characters.

Big Country is funny…the kind of funny that makes you pause and appreciate it.

Montana, a.k.a. Big Country, is pure NOLA pride and MLB arrogance wrapped in 6’4” delicious audacity. Zuri (Journey) is sharp, guarded, and smart—a single mom not here for the nonsense… except the nonsense keeps showing up with a deep voice and dangerous eye contact. oh boy 🙄

What I loved most:
⭐️ Top-tier banter: fast, natural, and fun.
⭐️ Humor that carries the emotional weight

It’s playful, sexy without trying too hard, and flirts its way straight into your feelings. Banter, tension, heart, and just enough chaos to make it stick.

Big Country jumps straight into the story and I loved that choice. There’s no slow buildup. You meet Zuri and Montana and immediately get pulled into a situation that’s messy, layered, and way more serious than it first appears. The fake dating setup is rooted in image and career recovery, but it quickly becomes clear that Zuri is running from something much darker, and that tension follows every interaction.

Zuri is such an interesting character. She’s a single mother with a past in the medical field, which made me instantly curious about what she walked away from and why. Her priority is always her son, and that protective instinct drives so many of her choices, even the questionable ones. Montana, on the other hand, doesn’t hesitate when it comes to showing up for her. He steps in without fully knowing the situation, and that confidence mixed with genuine care made their dynamic really fun to watch unfold.

The family aspect really worked for me. Montana’s family was fully involved, supportive, and messy in the way real families are. Darius was the emotional glue for me. He is such a sweet kid and absolutely steals every scene he’s in. Watching his bond with Montana develop made the romance hit harder because it wasn’t just about attraction, it was about building something stable.

While I loved the journey, the ending did feel a bit rushed. There were a few things I wanted more clarity on once everything came to light, especially after all that buildup. Still, this was an engaging read with strong emotional stakes, a protective male lead, and a single mother heroine doing her best under impossible circumstances. Fake dating that turns real will always get me, and this one mostly delivered.

Push, Pull, and Plenty of Suspense

Big Country is a romcom featuring Zuri and Montana, with Montana’s alter ego, Big Country, adding an extra layer to the story. This read has wit, corny jokes, playful banter, and suspense.

As a reader, I found myself constantly asking: Why is Zuri on the run? Why is she so guarded? As the story progresses, her defenses slowly come down, and we begin to see her open up to Montana and share her story. That unfolding is what kept me intrigued; I genuinely wanted to know what happened to put her in her current situation.

That said, I wish there had been more on-page depth for Montana, as he, too, is a complex character. This ties into why the fake-dating had to occur in the first place. While the story briefly touched on someone important not being part of his life, it didn’t dig deep enough or fully resolve that piece. Because of that, I also wanted more from the fake-dating trope. Was it really fake dating if there was no spotlight or pressure driving it?

Montana, although an arse at times lol was a sweet individual underneath his Big Country alter ego. What stood out most was his patience, not just with Zuri but also with her son, Darius. I also enjoyed how Zuri is clearly trying to keep everything under the radar, and that tension works well throughout the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the suspense, and the ending sealed it for me. “Salt preserves Enhances flavor. Heals. Zuri, you are salt.”- Miss Virginia

Amarie has a writing style that at times can be difficult to read. It reads as everything from conversations, to choppy, to like you’re reading something with redactions. So stylistically she isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, for me most of the time I can get past it because the storyline is interesting and unique. This one I was willing because it’s the authors first attempt at a Romcom.

With that being said two things made this less enjoyable than it could have been. The overuse of unrecognizable idiomatic expressions, that’s didn’t make sense and felt a little like making fun of Southern dialect, even though I know that wasn’t the authors intention. The other was it combined tropes that I didn’t feel like worked together.
However, the characters are lovable and there were moments that I really enjoyed. Like the banter between the brothers.

Im all for authors stepping outside of their comfort zone and trying new things so I’d still recommend giving it a try especially if you like: sort of awkward FMCs taking on cocky rich athletes and making them fall hard. And you’re a reader who is willing to support authors while they grow and develop.

CW: This is fade to black. Touches on the death of a side character’s child. Implications of abuse. And the mention and depiction of murder.

I finished Big Country by Amarie Avant as an ARC read (February 5, 2026), and I have to say—this was the perfect transition into Mardi Gras and Valentine’s season.

At first glance, this feels like a classic fake-dating rom-com. But what surprised me most is that the fake relationship trope actually takes a bit of a backseat. Instead, the story leans heavily into suspense, particularly surrounding Zuri’s past.

When we meet Zuri, it’s clear she’s running from something. That tension lingers throughout the story, creating a steady undercurrent of suspense that kept me turning the pages. I found myself more invested in uncovering her secrets than anticipating romantic milestones—which is not what I expected going in.

Montana, first introduced through his alter ego “Big Country,” comes off arrogant and larger-than-life. But as the story peels back the layers and we see him simply as Montana, we begin to understand the vulnerability and complexity beneath the persona. That duality was one of my favorite aspects of the book.

Because the narrative prioritizes Zuri’s backstory and suspense elements, the romance develops gently. The spice is very light—more emotional connection than physical intensity. Readers looking for heavy steam may find it mild, but for those who enjoy soft-burn romance with depth and intrigue, this balance works well.

ARC review

This was a little bit of rom-com with some suspense folded in. When you first meet Zuri you learn that she is running from something which added the suspense element to the story and it kept me engaged trying to figure out what her story was. Montana's character is first introduced into the book as his alter ego Big Country which his fans know him as and has a bit of an arrogance to him but when we see him as just Montana you realize there are layers to his story.

When Zuri first meets Montana they get off to an awkward start but they eventually fall into a good space. The concept of fake dating was brought up in the book with these two characters; and while the idea helped them spend more time with each other to have feelings get involved, it didn't quite develop as fake dating since it seemed to be more secretive due to whatever she was running from. Once you do find out about Zuri's past and what she is trying to hide from, I felt the "solution" that was mentioned in the book to gather more intel could have used more details as well.

Overall, I did enjoy the romance aspect of this book but I would have liked more details on the additional aspects of the storyline.

Big Country
Amarie Avant

Zuri is an educated single mother with a hidden past. Montana is a man that has everything except for someone to share his life with.

Zuri’s biggest concerned is to stay under the radar of detection. She has to always be ten steps ahead to ensure the safety of Darius and herself. Her issue is Montana sweet talking and the support she feels from his family. It’s making her resolve impossible to stick with.

Even before the topic of “fate dating” was discussed, their chemistry was undeniable. Montana’s drive to provide a bit of security to Darius and Zuri’s life made him more than this larger than life personality. His devotion to the people he cares about is deep.

With Zuri, Montana doesn’t have to rely on his ego. He can be in the fullness of whatever version of himself he wants, without being forced to present a particular version as a form of masking.

Additionally, I enjoyed the time given to each character’s plight. I’m exceptionally interested in Washington and Madison‘s story. It’s clear that although they’ve experienced devastating losses that something could still be happening between them. Anything is possible 👀.

Whew… Big Country by Amarie Avant had me smiling & sighing in the best way.

This book was gifted to me as an ARC for my honest review, and listen—this was such a refreshing, emotional take on fake dating while running from a past that refuses to stay buried.

Enter Zuri, aka Journey: grumpy, guarded, and doing whatever it takes to protect her son while staying one step ahead of her ex. Her strength? Palpable. Her fear? Real. Her growth? Beautiful to watch.

And then there’s Montana 😮‍🔥
The banter? Sharp.
The chemistry? SIZZLING.
The way he shows up—not just for Zuri, but for her son—chef’s kiss. Even in a fake dating situation, Montana understands that loving a woman means respecting her child, and baby… that hit DIFFERENT.

This story speaks to survival, second chances, found family, and letting love meet you where you are—not where you used to be. You’ll laugh out loud one minute and be fanning yourself the next because whew… the tension is TENSIONING.

If you love:
✨ Fake dating with real feelings
✨ A protective MMC
✨ A strong single mom heroine
✨ NOLA vibes + emotional depth

Don’t wait—this one is absolutely worth the read.

Thank you Amarie Avant for the ARC and ALC!

I came for the fake dating… and stayed for the unexpected twists.

Zuri is a stubborn, protective single mom who has zero time for nonsense, and Montana (Big Country) is equal parts charm and ego. What starts off messy turns into something deeper with found family, humor, and emotional moments that really highlight the heart of the story.

The February 5th release timing is perfect, with Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day woven into the love story in a way that adds to the atmosphere and romance.

Now overall… I wanted MORE. I kept waiting to unlock deeper layers of the characters. Some elements felt surface level, and even with the intention of holding back certain reveals for surprise, there still could’ve been more development. The writing style also threw me off at times. It felt choppy and a bit disjointed, and since this is my first book from the author, I wasn’t sure if that was a stylistic choice or just this particular story.

That said, I’m still interested in continuing the series because the foundation and potential are definitely there.

Big Country by Amarie Avant was a heartwarming, promising and fun romantic comedy. This was an okay read, but I really enjoyed the characters Montana aka “Big Country” was cocky but in an endearing and entertaining way. He had a very big personality that stems from his alter ego Big Country, but I wish the different sides to him were explored more because I found it kind of hard to differentiate between the two. I really love the awkward Black girl personality archetype which Zuri embodied so well, but I also enjoyed how resilient she was.

The banter and romance between Zuri and Montana was sweet and warm. This story is supposed to be a fake dating romance, but the fake dating element doesn’t really work because Zuri is on the run and is keeping her identity a secret and fake dating is all about appearances. As someone who loves fake dating I was a bit disappointed by that. Overall, for this to be the author’s first romantic comedy this was a solid story.

Montana and Zuri

This was a really good romcom. The banter between the two main characters set the stage for a fun bit of entertainment. Montana met his match on Zuri. He was quite the character. She also had her hands full with him. Throw in some friends and family that thought they should be together and you get a sweet, fun story with emotion.
Both characters have a different story to tell. Zuri has secrets and a lot going on. Big Country has a big ego. It takes Zuri to knock him down a few times. She is quick witted and very sarcastic. I love their interactions.

Thank you for the ARC and Audio a time was had with this book

Big Country is my first read by Marie Avant. This story had the feels I love in what I call a human story 🤣🤣 love, family and a whole lot of personality.

I am not familiar with New Orleans culture however I am from the Caribbean and felt right at home especially with the carnival and some of the language used.

Zuri, the FMC is running from her past a smart single mother while the MMC has a ego so big his alter ego had me cussing at times. The fake dating troupe took a back seat in this story and was focused more on Zuri life prior to moving to New Orleans.

The thing that stood out most for me was the banter between the FMC and the MMC. I was a bit confused at the beginning of the story, the plot did slow a bit but the way the characters were likable kept me engaged and wanting more.

I really enjoyed the story. I will be continuing because I want to see how the story develops with the other characters. Can I just say I want to know more about Washington and Mad-dy 🤣 and also Natasha and Lachlan.

Montana and Zuri’s story is so sweet! I love that the story takes place in NOLA it’s the perfect backdrop for this romcom. Big Country is a funny story and has a group of very funny and very sweet characters that are so relatable. Zuri is focused on her son and is super guarded but when it comes to Montana, she can’t help but to let her defenses down. It’s a great story of black love and an amazing take on the fake dating trope. I also love the mystery aspect of the story and how it unfolds. An absolute must read!

Big Country and Journey!

This was a cute romcom between Big Country and Journey. The MMC has such a huge personality I wish we could have delved a little more into the intricacies of him having his alter ego Big Country. But I love how he shows up for the FMC.
The FMC is going through so much. But I like her awkward black girl vibe. Her backstory is one that feels authentic in that people will take advantage of you when you least expect it and those times can make you jaded and guarded as a result.

This was a good read.

If you’re a fan of Rom Com, you’re going to love the comedic aspects of this story with Zuri and Big Country navigating the fact that they’re destined to be together. They may be fake dating but the looks he gives says otherwise. Throw in friends and family pushing them towards each other and you have a laugh out loud love story. Unfortunately you can’t fake what’s meant to be.
Loved the NOLA settings, felt like being home.

Ms Avant never disappoints

This book was everything I usually never read AA anymore because the titles alone turn me off but this book is from one of my favorite authors so I knew it would be great. So where do I start a baseball player who happens to be a great guy with some issues who meets a woman hiding from a past she would like to forget they form a fake relationship that was never going to work because it was to much passion to ignore throw in the fact that he has a momma who's a gem and auntie who's a hoot and three brothers that got some issues too settle in for a great read can't wait for the other brothers stories

The Big Country & His Bébé

First let me say that I absolutely love the cover … ❤️
I am going to be brief, I read it as an ARC and I read it while traveling in Europe, so the characters are special to me because they traveled all over Europe with me and kept me company. That being said, I loved it and Montana Aka Big Country is hilarious and he loved his Bébé like no others and since day one he kind claimed the little man , Zuri’s son. I love “Mama” , her kindness touched my heart, she was one extraordinary woman…
Anyway, I love the characters and can’t wait to read: “Big Mad”

Love a Southern Gentleman

Super cute rom com from Amarie Avant. The banter was on point, and I laughed out loud through most of Zuri/Journey’s internal dialogue. Girl had me rolling. Definitely a great palate cleanser, with a good storyline, and some real good (feel good) romance. Not as spicy as I’m used to from this author but there was definitely enough to wet the palate. I really hope the author writes about all the brothers!! I definitely need Mads (lol) story.

On the run from her ex- Journey/Zuri falls into the arms of Montana/Big Country with the help of a unmanned Birkin handbag. Montana is big and stands firm. A loyal friend to have in your corner. They are each about to fall hard and become victims of their fame. With enemies on both sides circling close, they have a lot to lose. Good fun read.

I'm in Love with Big Country!

You'll love Zuri if you're a fan of fierce single mothers who'd stop at nothing for their kids. Montana, or Big Country, is perfect for those who adore protective heroes with a soft spot. And then there's Darius (Little Dude), the adorable little boy who brought warmth to the story and made Montana a dad - no step around here.
My favorite line from the story comes from Darius. “My daddy is better than you!”

I loved this story with Zuri's strength and Montana's tender side, paired with Darius's adorable spirit.

She was running from an ex with evil intentions; He was trying to smooth over a scandal that could end his career. When he sets his eyes on her, nothing will stop him from getting what he wants. This was a cute story with some push and pull, a little bit of drama, and a HEA.

I received an ARC of this book.

Ive read other books by Amarie Avant before and I enjoyed them but unfortunately this book wasn’t for me. I did like the plot of the book, single mom aspect and that it’s a romcom.

I think for me , the story felt rushed sometimes and there wasn’t a consistent flow throughout.
