This is a good book teaching the basic for newbies to the database world. The book is copyright 2003, so the information some of which is dated but, for the most part, is still useful to a person just stepping out into databases.

Good introduction to databases. It has questions and problems at the end of each chapter to help you check your understanding of the material.
