As I grow most of the herbs I use on my farm, I haven’t been to any herb shops in the city in a long time, but back in the early 90s, Anna Riva’s books and products were pretty much a staple offering in them. “Candle Burning Magic: A Spellbook of Rituals for Good and Evil” is one of those books.

Like many other of Riva’s books, this book heavily features her line of oils, candles, and incense. She includes a number of different rituals, but most of them, of course, feature her products. So, really, this book is best used by people who are more interested in “ready made” spells where basically everything is done for you except for lighting the candles (and purchasing the products, obviously). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking this book or the Riva product line. In fact, I’ve purchased many of her products, and I’ve always had a secret love affair with her candles (especially the seven knobbed candles!). What I’m saying, in short, is that this book is geared towards a certain clientele who prefers less of a personal investment in spell creation.

Riva’s book is widely applicable to a larger segment of the population because she includes candle burning rituals for Christians, Wiccans, Hoodoo, and Vodou. She also incorporates rituals using both seals and magic squares. Given that this book is about candle magic, Riva also includes some information on melted wax fortune reading at the end of the book.

Overall, I’d recommend this book to anyone who specifically uses the Anna Riva line of products which, essentially, is why this book was written.

There is quite a lot of information packed into this 100 page book. I love that, however, I do wish that the author took a more secular take on it rather that put a Christian take on the entire thing, but I digress as that didn't really impact the information provided.

Anna Riva covers everything from the physical appearance of the candle and what it means, to dressing it with oils, using incense, intentions, inscriptions, symbols (seals/sigils), the Hand of Glory, how long to burn the candle, when to burn the candle, and even ceromancy.

I took notes. I had to, there was so much information covered here and I wanted to be able to build on this basic foundation that Anna Riva provided. If you are at all interested in candle burning magick, I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of this book. It's perfect for beginners or people wanting to get back into it.

This started off interestingly enough then got into this weird confusing state where I thought I was reading a fantasy story. Wasn't worth my time.
