A wonderful installment in the series, and I found myself seeing so many plot points coming together, I had to give it five stars. Set in the beautiful coastal cliffs of Maine, a few deaths come barreling forward as Hayley figures out what to do with her life. She's had a few career changes, but another is on the horizon, and something with the way the story unfolded this time kept calling me back. That said, don't read further if you prefer not to read a spoiler... warned ya, okay here it goes. I had to give the book 5 stars because it's the final one in the series, which was a surprise. I had no idea it was coming to a conclusion, and honestly it saddened me. Even though we didn't get enough time with her children, and I think marrying Bruce was the wrong choice, I still love her relationship with Mona and Liddy. But there's good news, beyond how well written all the final connections are. Hayley may continue doing some investigating in a new series or standalone book with her daughter, Gemma!

This was an amazing end to an amazing series! I love Hailey, Bruce, Sergio, Randy, Liddy, and Mona! It was just wrapped up like a neat little bow, and although I am so sad...i'm excited to read the start of Hailey's new adventures!
I highly recommend this series to all cozy fans!

Hayley and Bruce are tucked into this secluded little spot on the rocky shoreline trying to have one romantic evening like normal married people, which was obviously their first mistake. The fireworks start. The bay lights up. Then Hank Desmond turns up floating in the darkness like the universe personally decided their date night needed a homicide. Hayley cannot even cuddle near a body of water without getting assigned a case.
Hank owned the Smokehouse and had apparently spent years moving through town like a man who believed every rack of ribs came with diplomatic immunity. Competitors hated him. Business owners hated him. People who had merely stood near him probably had notes. His much-younger wife had been on the party boat. A sleazy seasonal resident was there too. Another barbecue chef’s gun is involved. This man did not leave behind a suspect list. He left behind a reunion.
The new police chief, Caleb Maddox, sees the gun, sees the rival pit master, and decides the case has basically packed its own lunch. He also wants Hayley nowhere near the investigation, which is such a brave little dream for him. Telling Hayley Powell to stay out of a murder is like telling a Labrador not to notice the rotisserie chicken on the counter. She heard him. She simply rejected the premise.
And she has plenty of other things she should be dealing with. Randy and Sergio are leaving for Brazil. The bar is changing hands. Everyone around her is making huge life decisions, and Hayley is responding to this emotional avalanche by interviewing barbecue vendors and wandering into danger. Honestly, I know avoidance when I see it, and this woman has turned hers into community service.
Sergeant Earl gets dragged into the mess with her, and their partnership has the energy of two people who know the plan is bad but are already in the car. Hayley keeps pushing. Earl keeps getting pulled deeper. Bruce watches all of this with the exhausted calm of a husband who has accepted that his wife’s natural habitat is somewhere between a crime scene and an argument with law enforcement.
The barbecue world in this book is feral. Nobody is calmly discussing smoked meat. These people are guarding recipes, money, territory, and grudges like brisket is a hereditary title. Every conversation reveals one more person Hank insulted, undercut, cheated, embarrassed, or made miserable. At a certain point, I stopped asking who wanted him dead and started asking who had the emotional restraint not to do it.
And then the goodbye stuff sneaks in and gets you right in the ribs. Hayley has built her whole life around this town, these people, and the version of herself who always knows where she belongs. Now everybody is shifting, leaving, starting over. Solving Hank’s murder gives her something she can actually fix while the rest of her life keeps changing without asking permission.
Knowing this is the end of the series made every appearance from Mona, Liddy, Randy, Sergio, Bruce, and the rest of the Bar Harbor crew feel a little heavier. I have only popped into a handful of these books and novellas, but visiting them always feels like showing up late to dinner and immediately being handed a cocktail, a plate, and three pieces of gossip you were apparently expected to know already. I’m going to miss that.
This was 4 stars for me. Hayley occasionally pushed her friends into helping even when the new chief was threatening their jobs, and I wanted to take her by the shoulders and remind her that employment is not a group activity she can volunteer everyone for. But the suspects were messy, the murder was tangled, and the farewell landed exactly where it needed to.

It didn’t take long to figure out this was the last Hayley Powell mystery but it was wrapped up in such an awesome way. There were plenty of leaky eyes moments for sure, and I was so happy to find a few good Sergio-isms included, even a mention of one too. I’m really gonna miss these characters! And Sergio was among the most awesome fictional police chiefs I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about. And note, this book probably requires a tissue alert in a few places, or maybe that’s just me. 😉
The mystery itself was good as always and Hayley was at her A-game sleuthing. She cracked me up how she was getting info and trying to keep it on the down low when Sgt. Earl passed her the intel, lol. There were lotsa changes going on in Hayley and her friends’ and family’s lives. But the main thing was everyone was happy and where they needed to be. I’d sure love to see a spinoff with Hayley and Bruce as PIs or something crazy like that. I’m already missing them!

June 14, 2026Exactly what I expect from a cozy mystery - a busy-body sleuth, a cute small town with ample suspects, and a lot of misdirection when looking for the killer.
I really liked all the extra (and arguable unnecessary) sections added - Hayley’s articles for her food & drinks feature and drink & dinner recipes (that sound delicious!)
Unfortunately, this wasn’t my favorite of the series. With the addition of a new chip of police who didn’t want Hayley involved, I struggled with Hayley strong arming her friends to help her investigate since it put their positions at risk. It just seemed unnecessary and self-absorbed, which took me out of the story a bit.

I'm not crying, you're crying! I can't believe one of my all-time favorite series is ending. While there will be a new series starring Hayley and her daughter Gemma, I'm still sad to see this chapter closing. I started reading this series on a Christmas break and I binge read book after book, loving every recipe, every near-miss, every page of every book. Every time a new book comes out I'm first in line to read it and now what will I do with myself?
In this book, Hayley and Bruce are watching the fireworks when someone is shot on their boat. The victim had taken advantage of, used, and cheated half the people in town and had more enemies than Maine has blueberries and the killer could be literally anyone. But Hayley is determined! Meanwhile everything is changing in Bar Harbor, Randy and Sergio are leaving town (and - spoiler alert - they're not the only ones), Hayley is stepping away from her restaurant, and as fall approaches there's every indication that this will be a long and lonely winter. This made for a bittersweet story because even as Hayley was going about digging up clues and dodging danger, it was impossible to forget that this was the end.
When people express an interest in the cozy mystery genre, this is one of the first series I recommend to them. Everything that I love in a cozy is front and center, fun MC, cute dog, lovely seaside setting, a little romance, good friends, mouth-watering recipes, and so much murder. I always hoped this series would be one that lasted 30+ books but I guess we'll have to settle for 19.
Thank you to Lee Hollis for 14 years of fun adventures and for continuing the series in a new format. I can't wait to read the new series!

I’m sad to say that my favorite cozy mystery series has come to an end. The finale did not disappoint! Our main character and sleuth, Hayley, is processing a lot of change. Her beloved brother, Randy, and his husband, Chief of Police Sergio, have announced their decision to leave Bar Harbor and move to Brazil. This sets a few things in motion: Hayley’s favorite local hangout, Drinks Like a Fish, is getting a new owner, a new Police Chief arrives in town, and Hayley starts questioning her next move.
She doesn’t have time to process her thoughts before a murder happens. The best way to not process the changes is to keep busy with an investigation, right? As we know and love, Hayley is relentless in her pursuit of the truth and justice. The new Police Chief, Caleb Maddox, is not loving this. The stakes are high in this one and all of Hayley’s loved ones are worried for her safety more than usual. It was a very good mystery!
The main sidekick in this story was Sergeant Earl and I loved Hayley and Earl’s team up! They had me cracking up a few times and wishing for another book so they could team up again.
I loved how the book wrapped up the stories of all our favorite characters and included a peek of where each is headed next. This includes Hayley, Bruce, Randy, Sergio, Mona, and Liddy. I was very satisfied with everyone’s endings. But wait! The author announced that Hayley Powell will return in a new culinary themed mystery series in a team up with her daughter Gemma. I can’t wait and hope to see visits from all of our favorites from Bar Harbor!

Most of the tourists have departed Bar Harbor, leaving the locals to enjoy the end of season fireworks in relative peace and quiet. Restauranteur and occasional sleuth, Hayley Powell, and husband, Bruce, are watching from their own secluded spot until a body is found floating in the bay! Determined to find out who was responsible, Hayley launches into an investigation fraught with danger and plenty of suspects she's sure couldn't be guilty. There are changes afoot in Bar Harbor and Hayley finds herself lacking the usual backup when she needs it most but she can't stop now, even though her life may depend on it.
This is such a satisfying book, with all loose ends and conversations concluded and I had no idea whodunit until I was supposed to. Once again the newspaper column, cocktails, and recipes add another element to the story and all of the main protagonists have a storyline of their own woven through the main investigation. Hayley and Bruce are great as they work through everything together while Mona and Liddy provide clues and encouragement as usual. If you enjoy this series I urge you to read book 19, you won't be disappointed.

Death of a Grill Master by Lee Hollis is a fabulous culinary cozy mystery that is the 19th book in the Hayley Powell Food and Cocktails Mystery series. This is my favorite series!
I am a long time fan and reader of this amazing series. I have read all 19 books and the additional novellas since the very beginning. It is my favorite series, thus this book is hard to finish.
Hayley and Bruce (by association) are wrapped into another murder mystery when a famous BBQ baron is found murdered right as the busy tourist season is wrapping up shop. Despite past experiences, or because of them, Hayley knows there is more to it than what the new police chief’s concerns seem to be. There are plenty of suspects and Hayley has her work cut out for her with finding the culprit of this latest murder.
As always, I love the characters, the dynamics, the sarcasm, the banter…I just love it all, and always will. I cannot recommend this book and series enough.

No spoilers but the reader will soon figure out this is the swan song for the Hayley Powell mysteries. I have no qualms with that as I thought the series was struggling in the last few books. That being said, I think the authors did well with Hayley's send off.
The gist of the story (without ruining the wrapping up plot) is the death of a Grill Master at the Labor Day fireworks show. He is murdered on his boat and found by Hayley in the water. There are multiple suspects as the victim was not well liked (typical) and stole recipes from other chefs, marketed them as his own and then profited handsomely while leaving the original proprietor in the dust with nothing. Hayley seems to be extra nosey in this one considering no one she knows is fingered as a suspect.
I found Hayley's persistence in this one just a smidge annoying but true to her amateur sleuthing skills. The kayaking parts are ridiculous but show her dedication to solving the crime.
As I said, I think they did the series justice with this ending. I hate it when mystery series are abruptly canceled and we get no closure, especially when they are as long as this one (19 books! Impressive).

The victim was not well liked so there are plenty of suspects. I enjoyed the mystery but enjoyed the characters and the tone of the book more than anything. There is a lot happening outside of the murder. Hayley's brother and his husband are moving to Brazil to be closer to Sergio's family. Hayley decides to take a step back from her restaurant, and even Haylry's friends seem to be moving on from Bar Harbor.
I know this is the last book in the series, but I wish it could go on forever. I am sad its over but the ending was just perfect. I liked how the author wrapped everything up and am excited to see where the spin off series with Hayley and her daughter goes.

I love this series, the stories always catch my attention and pull me in right away. This instalment was no different.

The end of the tourist season is upon Bar Harbor. Labor Day has the town celebrating with fireworks and boats decked out in the bay. Then the man who claims to be the Grill Master is found shot dead on his boat. Evidence points to three possible suspects, but it doesn't sit right with Hayley Powell; local food blogger, restaurant owner, and town sleuther. End of the tourist season is signaled by fireworks over the bay. Hayley and her husband are snuggled into a secluded spot to watch the show. When the find Hank Desmond dead, it just doesn't sit right with Hayley about who is the prime suspect. As many things are changing in Bar Harbor, Hayley must work through her emotions and new life. Will she find out who the true killer is or will the town be forever changed? I love all of the characters within the story. Their banter, and friendships are a definite draw for the reader. I highly recommend this series. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

Lee Hollis has given us another thrill ride with Hayley Powell on her journey to find out who killed barbecue master Hank Desmond. With changes happening all around, a bunch of people who had it out for Hank and a new, and not so welcoming, Chief of Police, will Haley catch the killer in time? Includes yummy recipes for food and drinks courtesy of her Island Times articles. This is a fun and quick read and, sadly, the last in the Haley Powell Food and Cocktails Mysteries. But she'll be back with her daughter, Gemma in a new series!

Death of a Grill Master is a fun and entertaining cozy mystery, full of quirky characters (some endearing, others not so much). Hayley has an insatiable need to find answers and bring about justice, to the frustration of the police chief and her husband (although he understands that drive in her). I enjoyed the light-hearted and sometimes suspenseful escapades Hayley embarked on to find answers.

Death of a Grill Master is the 19th and final book in the Hayley Powell Food and Cocktails Mystery series. This is a fun and quirky cozy mystery. Hayley, as usual, gets involved in the most recent murder in Bar Harbor, much to the chagrin of the new police chief. There are lots of shenanigans going on, lots of friends involved, and plenty of twists and turns before the mystery is solved. Although I have not read all of the books in the series, I recommend it as a fun series to explore.

This was such a fun mystery. It has a bit of everything. There's humor, murder, romance, family, friendship, new characters, theft, and the list goes on. The ending to the mystery wasn't what I expected. The rest of the story was bittersweet. I liked some of the endings, they were perfect or close to it, and I disliked some of the endings, they weren't what I wanted for that character. I'm looking forward to the companion series.

This has been a long-time cozy favorite of mine. As I was reading it, it felt “off” to me Maybe because Sergio and Randy weren’t involved. I didn’t realize until I got to the end that it was the last book in the series. Things wrap up very neatly in the end that will make fans of the series happy. It was a bittersweet goodbye to this series. I read all 19 books, and the characters are like friends of mine. I’m glad there will be more books with Haley, just not the same series. This,one was a difficult one to figure out, but it all made sense in the end. The ending was a bit sad with all the goodbyes. This was a good series.

This final entry in the series was everything we needed it to be as the author wraps up the series. Along with a final whodunit, you’ll find this book is satisfying and the author truly saved the best for last.

I’m sad this is the last book of the series but i hope the spinoff is just as good! You can definitely tell it’s the last one too. It has that feel to it.
