Before the white man came, the vast plains belonged to the Cheyenne. And Boston debutante Summer Van Schuyler belonged to the magnificent half-breed, Iron Knife. She’d come to him as a captive, defying her heritage to stay by his side.
But war clouds were gathering on the horizon… and tragedy soon forced Summer to return to her privileged world. With sorrow in her heart, she left her wilderness paradise and Iron Knife’s loving arms… unaware that treachery would keep them apart.
Iron Knife had two passions: his freedom and Summer. Now he’d risk capture in an alien territory to find her again. The trail was fraught with danger;the journey challenged his heart and soul. But the proud warrior knew that the aristocratic beauty was his destiny… and he’d fight to the death for the splendor of her forbidden love.

It was predictable and by that, I mean if some horrible thing can befall two lovers, then it happened to these yokels. And jeez, how over the top can you get before someone throws the book down?
There was nothing splendid about this book. I've said it before...whites shouldn't write about Native Americans without fully understnding the culture. The couple hero and heroine have supposedly been married for years, have three children, are each other's greatest love and yet don't understand a thin about each other. The author sets up her improbable story line by sexually frustrating the couple. NO SEX for years to prevent a to soon pregnancy. Everyone knows right after a womans monthly it is safe..so they had a few days to ease their lust...but haven't done it. She was gone shortly after they got together....back to the white society. He thought she was gone forever..so had a one nighter with an Indian maid. They got back together...but 5 yrs later when she finds out, the heroine acts like she has recently been betrayed. Stupid. There is a flash back to when she thought she killed someone to defend the hero. Then the villian shows up again, and we go thru it all over again....killing him, but this time he falls on his knife. Only point I could see was she was stuck for new material so recycled. The hero, who had a white mother and lived white for a long time befofe he weng Cheyenne, gives his white wife a hassle....acting more Indian than an Indian. Then later he is doubted by the tribe because he thinks "White". This author wanted it both ways. I actually fell asleep during the big...end of celebicy sex scene (so much for passion in it). I hated this book...so much that I stopped reading it at page 156. This was the first book I tried to read by this author, and it will be the last. So infantil, so poorly written, and so boring. I would not recommend this book to anyone...not the youngest moonstruck teen....NO ONE.
Even though this is the 12th book in the Panorama of the Old West series, it's actually a sequel to the couple from the 1st book in the series, so I couldn't wait to read it.
Now I'll have to go back and read the rest of them in order.
So, when the book starts out, Summer Sky and Iron Knife have been married 6 years and have 3 children and lots of problems with the tension between the Cheyenne and the whites.
They go through lots of turmoil, lash out at each other from their own hurts, are separated for awhile. All before Iron Knife proves what an awesome hero he is.
The things that happened were really interesting (SPOILER ALERT !!!) (especially Iron Knife's long and adventurous journey to Boston).
I think I liked this book even more than Cheyenne Captive.
SPOILER ALERT again!!!!
Even though by the end of the book poor Summer has pushed out 5 kids. (what a nightmare, but they could now start their own tribe).
My only problem with the ending is that (SPOILER ALERT!!!) it seems as though the family of 7 is going to end up on a reservation and things were really bad on the reservations for Native Americans at that time.
I really hope later in the series we get to see these characters again and know that they are healthy and happy. (like maybe on Iron Knife's brother-in-law's ranch in Texas).
wonderful loved this book glad he found his sister and summer sky. needs a third book. along with his sister and trace and the whole Durango clan.......
