Camp Clearwater is a queer, horror story that I found really intriguing. And I’m not usually a fan of horror. Danny J. Clearwater’s writing was eerie and creepy! He really made it feel like somebody was constantly watching from the shadows. I also really enjoyed the mystery and psychological factors. You never knew what was going to happen next or who the antagonist was.
Having this spooky story set at a summer camp in the woods was perfect. Abandoned cabins, judgmental townsfolk, and a dark forest created the perfect atmosphere for this book. And the history of Camp Clearwater allowed for a location that was already scary to get even scarier.
“This... this is a perfect structure. A story that piles up. Layer on layer. The evil here isn't recent. It's sedimented. Maybe something was repressed. Maybe someone died hating himself. Maybe... we're just the latest witnesses to something that keeps happening.”
That classic horror feel, combined with the 80’s/90’s vibes and hot men, made for a fantastic book.
The characters Clearwater created were all really enjoyable. Whether they were getting spicy in the showers or being vulnerable around the campfire, each character brought something unique to the story.
The ending was so fast-paced and intense. The big reveal was honestly kind of terrifying. But this book ended up being about so much more than just a horror story. It’s about dealing with trauma and what it means to be queer in a world that doesn’t understand or accept you. It’s about survival.
(Also, I read this book at night, just to add to the scare factor, and I ended up having to put the book down multiple nights because I’m such a chicken. lol)
