Whitehack

Rate this book
Whitehack is a fantasy role-playing game in the original tradition. In addition to custom adventures, campaigns and settings, it is designed to run just about any material from 1974 onwards with zero or little conversion. This is the third edition, in which the game has been revised and edited to better welcome new and returning role-players. You get a clarified and improved version of the game system, including things like powerful group mechanics, free form magick, auctions, zero up AC and boss monsters. You will also find new rules for character bases and leaders, factions, relations and reactions, custom sets of character attributes, modern genres and much, much more!

Awesome, simple rules with quite a few innovations. My favorite being Groups and how classes are handled. Tight page count, presentation, and writing. The only gripe I have is still having pretty crunchy mechanics when free-form classes are so innovative and interesting.

Whitehack 3e is perhaps the most valuable TTRPG supplement I've purchased in years. Not only does it provide a quality ruleset for facilitating a wide range of OSR-style games, it is chock-full with meditations on the hobby and well thought-out optional mechanics that can be dropped into any system. By expressing the notion of "hacking" your favorite setting or system, Whitehack blows the TTRPG world wide open and has immediately become a title I will recommend without hesitation to any fan of the genre, regardless of their interest in the OSR.
