Oral Roberts has been one of the giants of the Christian faith for more than seven decades. His ministry has spanned the globe with a message of healing and miracles that has reached more than a billion people. He founded Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma—a fully accredited liberal arts university offering more than eighty undergraduate and graduate degree programs. He has written more than 100 books and created the first oral commentary on the New Testament. Roberts is considered the leading healing evangelist of the twentieth century, a pioneer in Christian television, and without a doubt, one of the nation’s most innovative, and at times, controversial communicators.
The Lord has moved upon me to tell you one final story, and I believe it will pave the way for us to pray together concerning the prayer language of the Spirit!
Several years ago I met a man who was a building contractor, the head of his own large construction company, and he told me he had never heard of this marvellous experience of the Holy Spirit and what it could mean in his life. Then he attended a Full Gospel Business Men's Convention, founded by our dear friend, Demos Shakarian, and he was given the priceless opportunity to release the prayer language of the Spirit.
When he began to speak with tongues, he said he felt the most wonderful feeling of vitality and enthusiasm for the Lord and a tremendous release of power! And, later, his three sons, ages 14, 16, and 18, all received the same Holy Ghost power in their lives. m
I'll never forget what that man told me after receiving this glorious experience from the Lord.
And then he confided to me, "Now it's my driving goal to help everyone I know to receive this incredible power from the Lord!" And that's my goal, too, friend, because I know what an indescribable benefit the prayer language of the Spirit with the interpretation has been to me in my own life.
One of the most soul-satisfying things in the world is to pray directly to God, not to men, not for other people to hear you, but to pray to the Lord through this wonderful language that only God understands. This is especially precious when you're facing a problem that you haven't been able to climb over or you're wrestling with some great trial in your life.
Read and digest these words. Speaking in tongues is speaking a language that is understood but God and no one else, plus the only Spirit help us to pray
1.5 stars [Theology] This book’s aim is to make the theological case for what is termed “praying in the Spirit with the understanding.” It does this mostly through anecdote, along with few Bible references.
The writing is sophomoric. Underlining, bold print, italics, shock caps and combinations thereof fill the whole book. It contains divergent, subtly self-aggrandizing pieces of life story throughout, which—having read three other books by the author—seems to be typical. The author sometimes refers to himself in third person. Finally, the book is repetitive; the entire idea could have been written in 20 pages.
Experience plays a much superior role in the book than Scripture. The few references to the Bible mostly centered around 1 Corinthians, in which Roberts redefines “praying for interpretation” as hearing God’s response to one’s “prayer language,” rather than its translation. He thenceforth treats it as a given without further elaboration.
The low star rating for this book is for its composition, not its message or theological position. The theology here may be correct; I retain an open mind. But this book did nothing to prove it other than posit an alternate view of “interpretation,” and tell a gaggle of testimonies. Basing a theology pre-eminently on experience is never wise.
