James has accepted his destiny as the Pathlighter, pledging to serve the emperor and forge a way forward as a better example than the gods. But with assassins lurking within the capital and his allies doubting his every move, he begins to question what a better path requires, and if he ever truly knew what it meant.

Meanwhile, Ariel searches her plagued homeland for both the cause of the sickness and a cure for her beloved Roy’s demonic passenger. But the price of defending Spiath will challenge her convictions, and test what she's willing to sacrifice to save those she loves.

The now powerless Samira has cast herself into exile and returned to where her prophecy began. When an unlikely acquaintance seeks her help, they discover something in the lost pages of history that could also raze the future.

When the line between gods and monsters is obscured, what is left to believe in? Threadstealer continues the odyssey of the Chosen in the epic Pathlighter Trilogy.

SPOILER WARNING: This review contains spoilers for Threadstealer!!

The second installment of this series was so good!! This book definitely did not suffer from second-book syndrome!!

I felt like the pacing and flow of this book was a lot smoother than the first installment and I found myself on the edge of my seat the whole time. We traveled across the empire but I could so clearly picture everything in my head, even the disturbing true forms of the elder (Vayne especially 🤮)

Anyway! I really enjoyed the story and being in a bunch of different POVs helped the story progress and I liked the glimpses into each characters motivations.

I knew I liked Dhorh even when he was evil 🥺 there’s something about our little ancient Threadstealer that’s just so wholesome and I’m happy that he’s siding with the good guys now!! I’m super curious to see where things go with Mastreh joining the chosen and also Sam being back!!

And ROY!! 😭😭 what are the chances this is like when Sam “died” (I’m pretending like Ariel didn’t set his body on fire and send it out to the water) It was so heartbreaking to see him finally be free of Charodon and then DIE!! And for Clane to do it too was just so frustrating!!

And the ending with Ariel and Rhaiga…..and the chosen all want to kill Rhaiga too (yikes for book 3)!!! I’m officially impatiently waiting for the final installment of this wonderful trilogy!!

*Preface to say I beta read this story last year and then read the updated ARC.

Continuing right after book 1's fallout, the Chosen are thrown into more plots and intrigue, threatening to break their bonds.

There are 3 plots here and the strongest one for me is the Roy and Ariel plotline. They are going back to Ariel's homeland to uncover secret plots and shit just goes bad from the beginning, edge of the seat type shenanigans. Roy's struggle to keep Charodon from breaking free was the heart of this story and Leigh does a damn good job making us feel every struggle. And Ariel's coming to terms with Roy's de-evolving and her kingdom's demise is just next level pain. The ending with Roy and Ariel were just top notch, especially Ariel, who I related to on every level throughout this story. Her final scene is chef's kiss.

James and Leonard go through some strife themselves and I really enjoyed their relationship, felt very older bro/younger hothead bro. Really liked their plot and growth. James is still a brash bastard with an axe to grind, but he does get some learning rammed into his brain by the end. Leonard comes into his own as a leader and I really liked how Leigh changed his plot between beta and final version to really amp up Leonard as a character.

Samira had an awesome plot where she got to witness a lot of the mysterious backstory only hinted at in book 1. I always love a fallen hero coming to grips with their faults. Her arc was great and can't wait to see how book 3 goes for her.

As with book 1, Leigh does a damn good job of making the villains 3 dimensional. Vayne and Rhaiga are excellent and I really loved the turns Dhorh and Mastreh take in this story. Very excellent character work. The reason this series works so well is that every character is so well-rounded that they feel like they are real, their goals and motivations are real. Every one of them have faults and uses, which makes this series just feel like a myth.

This book ends on one hella awesome climax battle and Leigh spares no punches. I cannot wait for book 3, give me all the Greek-inspired tragedy!

I read Pathlighter and Threadstealer back to back, and I just wish we already had Book 3 out !!
Threadstealer builds up on everything Pathlighter did so well and takes it up a notch!

The characters are so well written, and they continue to be so distinct, not just because of their powers, but because they carry their own burdens and doubts and have relatable flaws.
I want to give props to the Roy + Ariel dynamic - I think their friendship and romance in both books was so realistic and only added to the story, not distract from it. I was so invested in Roy especially (because of that little pesky problem he has to deal with).
We also follow the arc of other characters like Samira who is basically starting from scratch after suffering a loss in Book 1 and exiling herself, so I really loved seeing how she ends up contributing to the story.

And the evil incarnate characters.. omg they gave me the creeps since the first time they were introduced. Just casually strolling in their human sleeves, among people..no biggie. The problem is they are also written so well, that you kinda start liking them in a way.

So in conclusion - this was easily one of my favourite reads for this year and I have such high hopes that Book 3 will also solidify the trilogy as one of my favourites!
