Pitkin Pictorials has been at the forefront of heritage publishing for over 70 years. The founder, Mr Pitkin, was a post-war entrepreneur devoted to publishing highly illustrated souvenir guidebooks that commemorated special people and events in British history.
One of the earliest souvenirs was for Princess Elizabeth’s wedding day in 1947, and subsequent publications documented other memorable royal occasions. As the list grew, subjects widened to include cathedrals, stately homes, museums.
While the book serves as a great photographic memoir of a visit to the famous cathedral, it contains minimal information on the cathedral itself. It briefly discusses the cathedral's history since the medieval period. While it mentions Jane Austen's burial in the book, a photograph of her grave is not included.
Winchester Cathedral was an unexpected highlight of our UK trip! While visiting, we happened across an amazing tour in which the guide shared seemingly endless fascinating stories about the history of the church over centuries... many of which I got to revisit in greater detail in this book! Filled with Norman and Gothic architecture, the building and its many precious relics inside are a testament to the preservation of the site against all odds. The initial purpose for our visit was to see the burial place of Jane Austen — she passed away in Winchester and was laid to rest in a setting of honor here.
John Crook does a great history of the cathedral. It is a visitor's guide, so there isn't a lot of depth, but the information is great and the writing is well done.
