Charming story where witches live in the middle of Idaho, and someone is out to get one of them in particular. But then she dies... who is behind it all? Love the progression and creativity in the story. Cahoon always keeps it lighthearted even when it's a murder spree. Enjoying the series a lot.

This might be my favorite book in the series. Mia is finding her way with the coven after testing in at level 3 when a slew of complaints brings in new tester, convinced that she faked her way through the first test. She's almost killed during the testing process and while she's recovering the tester, a 300 year old witch, is found dead from hypothermia on a local hiking trail. While Mia is not a suspect someone really wants her out of the picture. It seems that her retesting at level 5 is a threat to quite a few people in the community.
Mia and Mark team up to investigate- and a lot of long buried coven secrets come to life in the process.
I'm slightly afraid that this is the last book in the series- I really hope I'm wrong! There's so much more of Mia's story to tell!

As a kitchen witch, Mia is happy cooking and sharing meals with her family and boyfriend Trent.
When Mia finds out she is being retested because someone believes she cheated, Mia is panicked, she had no reason to cheat and can't understand why someone would accuse her.
As the story continues, we find out a lot about Mia and her role as a witch, as well as learning that not everything is what it seems.
I think this is my favorite book in the series, it was a lot of fun to read it.

June 25, 2026Since this is my book, it's not a rating or a typical review, but I wanted to let everyone know that book 8 in the KW series will be arriving on July 28th!! (It's always been a special day for me since I gave birth to a human child on that exact date, but many years before. Happy Birthday if you see this!)
One of the fun parts of writing this series has always been the Academy. Building out this school, which has become a home for Mia and her friends (and a few strays), has been a delight. I love visiting the library on the third floor, and hope to see Buttercup when I do.
When I was in first and third grade, I had a friend who lived two blocks up and to the left. Riding my bike to Zandy's, I had to pass by an old abandoned schoolhouse that had a tetherball pole with just the chain remaining. In the wind, that chain would clang as I rode by. I knew the place was haunted. Even then, ghost stories were my favorite kind of reads.
Writing the academy always takes me back to that scary building of my childhood.

Lynn Cahoon has once again crafted a paranormal cozy with characters who seem as normal as you or I, which include the all too familiar ups and downs associated with work, family, and the expectations of others. Mia Malone, Magic Springs most magical kitchen witch and creative cook for example, could care less about the score she received for the coven's national council exam although the allowance provided by the National Coven for being a level five witch, could come in handy for repairs and remodeling projects at the Academy. Mia was just happy to have the ordeal behind her. Unfortunately book 8 starts out with Mia being forced to retake the exam, and this time a special examiner with Salem witch family history will put her through the paces in an unrelenting fashion.
It isn't as if Mia doesn't have enough normal stress from her job at the Lodge which she needs in order to help keep, or her catering business, Mia's Morsels, afloat until it can support itself. Surely the Goddess isn't testing her with some paranormal stress as well. Between the jaw dropping cliffhanger of book seven aka Mary Alice Carpenter's back-from-the-dead ex-boyfriend Dorian Alexander popping back into town and proposing marriage. Then there is the situation with Mia's boyfriend, Trent, being stuck under house arrest for six weeks while Cerby, his little Maltese has in-home hellhound training with another one of Trent’s past admirers. I really appreciate how well developed the relationship is between Mia and Trent, a healthy and trusting relationship but that doesn’t mean that Mia won’t be open to a calming mantra with a chamomile chaser. This series continues to deliver everything that a paranormal cozy fan is looking for: magic on a mission, relatable characters, and a murder that ties all the loose ends together. There are multiple subplots, and several loose ends, but not a lot of suspects. The academy society has some great members who are going to do what it takes to get the answers they need.
There are clues sprinkled throughout, a few red herrings, and a solution that had me shaking my head. The solution was right there but those red herrings got me off track. This book is cozy and culinary with such a fun story that concludes with a very tasty and easy pumpkin muffin recipe. I whipped up a batch using fresh pumpkin frozen from last year's Jack-o’-lantern pumpkin and the flavor was fresh with just the right amount of sweetness. The same can be said about the book, there is just the right amount of sweetness, the right amount of spice, and all the characters work together to solve the mystery while propelling the overall story arc forward. This story line continues to allude to a magical conflict, so I hope that means more books.

I enjoyed this book and gave it 4 stars. It did take me a minute to get back into this world because I haven't read all the books and I was a little confused. Once I got back into the world, I enjoyed myself and got invested into the story.
Someone is after Mia and isn't happy that she is testing so well. She has to do retest sooner than she planned and she is a little stressed. Her Grandma is also stressed because an ex-lover is back in town and she is engaged to someone else. Grandma is also Mia's trainer, so she stressed about that. Mia's test was really hard, and it almost kills her because the tester thinks she cheated the first time and ends up being furious when Mia's test results are higher than last time.
Mia doesn't want to be at the new level because she just wants to be a kitchen witch and cook for people. This higher level has a lot more responsibilities.
The day after her test results the small town finds the tester dead. She has frozen to death. Who killed her and why. Luckily Mia is able to prove it wasn't her because she had friends and family over waiting for the results of the test.
Mia's boyfriend and the police chief's wife and daughter are stuck in a home for training of their hellhounds and aren't able to help her figure out who is after her.
The coven wants her to join the local group and keep pushing her, but she is more interested in who killed the tester than becoming a member of the coven. Soon it comes to the acknowledgement of the small town that the incident is ruled an accident, but in actually means that the incident is a coven problem and they will take the case into their hands and figure out who the killer is.
What I like about this book is the family and friendships between all the characters and the love they show each other. I would recommend this book but also read them in order so you are able to follow the story line better.

After being accused of cheating on her witch exam, she’s forced to retake it under the watchful eye of Suzanne Parker, a national coven representative who seems determined to prove Mia doesn’t belong. When Mia passes with an even higher ranking, Suzanne is furious. The very next day, she’s found dead, and Mia suddenly has more than her magical reputation to protect.
What I love most about this series isn’t just the mystery—it’s the people. Mia, Trent, Grandma Alice, Cerby, Buddy, and the rest of the gang have become characters I genuinely look forward to visiting. The friendships, found family, and everyday moments make Magic Springs feel like somewhere you’d happily spend a weekend…as long as you don’t mind the occasional murder investigation.
The magical elements continue to grow in this installment, but they never overshadow the cozy heart of the story. There are plenty of twists, a few surprises I didn’t see coming, and enough humor to keep everything feeling light even when the stakes get higher. If you’ve been following Mia’s journey from the beginning, this book feels especially rewarding.
I do recommend reading this series in order. While the mystery wraps up nicely, the relationships, magical world, and character growth build beautifully from one book to the next.

Eight Enchanting Elixirs by Lynn Cahoon is a Kitchen Witch Mystery and finds Mia still working at the lodge and Abigail still running her business. She has a new boss, Blake, who is a witch and difficult to read, but certainly better than her last one. Brent is at his house with Cerby, and Sarah and her baby, and their hellhound. Ostensibly for hellhound training, but Mia was suspicious of the trainer, who was Brent’s ex and appeared to want him back. Mia had tested in at level three, which was unprecedented and caused suspicions on the part of someone who she was called in for re-testing. It was a difficult day. Mary Alice had moved back in, complicated by the fact that Damien had left her cat’s body and had now returned as a golum who looked exactly like Damien when he had been alive. Mary Alice was engaged to Robert but that didn’t appear to affect Damien’s pursuit of her. All the protection spells around the academy building had to be voided because of the re-testing and it became apparent that someone was after Mia. It was all very strange and Mia was exhausted. Oh, and there was their guard dragon who took care of Mia and Brent.
This is a very entertaining series, and this book, in particular, moved the story forward by leaps and bounds. Sarah was watching out for Trent, so Mia felt good about that. She reciprocated by being sure that Mark, Sarah’s human husband and sheriff, was fed regularly. Such a bunch of likable characters, even those who were confused by the entire magic business. Mia and Trent having a loving relationship and they are terrific together. His brother Levi and her protege, Christina were in the process of moving to accommodate Christina’s new job. The mystery is a good one, complicated by the magic, It is difficult when one cannot be sure what it is that one is seeing. Such an engaging story. Fun.

I dove into Eight Enchanting Elixirs with high hopes, and Lynn Cahoon did not disappoint. This cozy mystery is a magical blend of charm, suspense, and whimsy, set in a world where witches live right in the heart of Idaho.
The story follows Mia, a kitchen witch juggling a lot more than just her potions lately. Between her grandmother’s undead ex making an unwelcome comeback, her boyfriend’s attempt to train their fluffy Maltese pup Cerby as a hellhound (yes, you read that right!), and the coven questioning her witch credentials, Mia is certainly kept on her toes. When she’s accused of cheating on a crucial exam and then unexpectedly moves up two levels, tempers flare—especially that of Suzanne Parker, a national coven rep with a serious grudge linked to her dark Salem family history. But things take a deadly turn when Suzanne is found dead, and suspicion falls squarely on Mia’s magical brews.
What really stood out to me was the world-building. The author creates a cozy yet intriguingly supernatural setting that feels both familiar and enchantingly fresh. The characters are well-drawn and full of personality, with Mia’s relatable struggles grounding the story’s magical elements. The mystery is cleverly plotted, keeping me guessing without ever feeling convoluted.
And I have to mention the cover—it’s absolutely delightful and perfectly captures the book’s warm, witchy vibe. Plus, for those who enjoy a little culinary magic, there’s even a tempting recipe included at the end, which is a lovely touch!

Lynn Cahoon brings the reader the eighth novel in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series, 'Eight Enchanting Elixirs'. I read this thinking it was a stand-alone novel, but would encourage reading them in order to get some background that I did not have. I am thinking that some of the information referenced previous books so you do know some of the background about the supporting characters.
Mia is a kitchen witch and caterer in Magic Springs, Idaho. Previously, she had taken a test to determine her skill level and came out as a Level 3. When that is called into question, she learns she must take another test. Suzanne Parker, a national coven rep, performs this next exam and they learn that Mia has moved up two levels and is now a Level 5. Parker is angry and threatens her. The next morning, she is found dead and the mystery ensues from there. Working in conjunction with the police, Mia is determined to find out who is responsible when fingers start to point in her direction.
I found the Mia to be a delightful and charming character. Her friends and family are supportive and aid her in ways that move the story along at a fast clip. While the characters also experience things, they stand together. They each bring something to the table as they work to solve the mystery. This read like it could the last in the series as long buried coven secrets came to light, but would love to see more. I will be going back for more, as I would like to see how the story progresses from the beginning.

This book has a lot of twists and turns but is a delightful fantasy cozy mystery. I do hope, however, that given the ending, we are not bidding goodbye to Magic Springs yet. No spoilers though.
Mia is continuing to be catering director at the Lodge in Magic Springs, ID while her "mother-in-law" Abigail, manages her catering company, Mia's Morsels. Mia finds herself feeling left out of her own company because she is so busy with the lodge. While Abigail is more than capable, Mia feels in the dark about her business. When the local coven lets Mia know they think she cheated on her witch test and a new, brutal instructor comes to surprise re-test Mia, she is furious. The new tester puts Mia through the wringer, only to nearly kill her in the process. Then someone murders the instructor and coven business suddenly becomes everyone's business. Mia's boyfriend and confidante, Trent, is trapped under house arrest with his hellhound in training and unavailable to her for six weeks. When the pieces start coming together that someone is definitely out for Mia, her group rallies to ferret out the traitor and solve the murder.
The characters are what makes this series so fun. We have kitchen witches, witches, covens, witches-in-training, hellhounds and a dragon! Who wouldn't want to read such a fun book? I have stuck with this series since the first novella and every time the books get better. I do hope there will be many more of Mia's adventures, there is so much material left to work with, I hope this is not the conclusion.

Ms. Cahoon has created a set of characters that we have come to care about and reading her stories makes you feel like you are there with them, sharing the adventure. There is danger in the air in Magic Springs. Someone is trying to split up the group and weaken their combined powers. The group is a family that is built not from blood but concern and care - they chose to be each other's family. Trent Majors is sent off to hellhound training with Cerby. Police Chief Mark Baldwin's wife and baby Em are also off at Trent's house for 6 weeks.
Mia finds out that she needs to retest to be a witch because someone complained that she cheated on her previous test because she tested so high. Mia couldn't have cheated and had no reason to because she doesn't want to work her way up in the coven. Her talents are cooking and feeding people and that is where she is happiest. We learn more about her path to being a kitchen witch and about her kitchen witch Gloria - who has excellent taste in music.
Grandma Alice is dealing with her ex who has come back from the dead, has moved into the Academy and is renovating rooms. There are some surprises in this story that you might not see coming and hopefully a ninth book in the near future.

As the weather gets colder in Magic Springs and with her busiest time of year just round the corner Kitchen Witch Mia Malone is feeling the pressure. Everyone in her magic circle seems to have problems she needs to help with and that's before the national testing office says she has to retake her tests because they think she cheated! The whole thing takes a physical toll on Mia but when a visitor to her town is found dead she knows she has to investigate. With very strange and definitely magical things happening to Mia and her friends it's clear someone is out to ruin her. Never one to back down from a fight Mia begins checking everyone to find out who's responsible after all she has far more important things to look forward to.

Eight Enchanting Elixirs is the 8th fabulous book in Lynn Cahoon's Kitchen Witch Mysteries. Mia is a Kitchen Witch and someone in the local coven is requiring her to retake her witch's test. She ends up doing well and advances to Level 5 which is very unusual. Suzanne Parker is overseeing the test but when she is found dead, things get complicated and Mia doesn't know who to trust. Mia's boyfriend Trent is homebound to train his hellhound Cerby. Their friend Sarah and her baby Em are also training their hellhound at Trent's. He also has a dragon Buddy who is cute. Trent is still around and is supportive and caring. Mia's friend Christina and her fiance Levi are planning their wedding and a move to Boise. Mia works at the Lodge planning events. Mia doesn't trust her boss Blake so Christina helps out to keep an eye on Mia. Someone is changing her memories and causing turmoil. My favorite part of this series is the feeling of family and the love and support. I guessed the culprit but I wasn't sure. There was minimal peril which I like. There were some events that made the ending so very enjoyable but a little surprising! I can't wait for the next book! I love this series! Ok, you are definitely going to want to be ready for action here, as this tale has a lot going on! Mia, as usual, has a lot going on, but she is getting more added to her plate when she is told she needs to retest her, witch level status, as there are complaints that she might have cheated. Mia and her group are shocked, but she chooses to move ahead. The woman sent by the National Testing Bureau is relentless, Suzanne Parker obviously thinks Mia cheated and drives her relentlessly. When her results come back and she has moved up two levels, Suzanne is furious, but before she can do anything about it, she is found dead the next morning. Mia knows something funky is going on. Beside the murder, her boss is trying to spell her, Trent is in quarantine training his hellhound, her Gram is deal with the Damien/Dorian debacle, Christina is dealing with career and personal issues and Finn is trying to find herself. 3.75 In terms of entertainment this book is wonderful. I enjoy this cast of characters and creatures and the personal stories that we get about their lives. If that was all this was supposed to be it would have been a 4+ star. However, this is supposed to be a cozy mystery and that's where I felt this book fell short. The mystery itself just didn't make a lot of sense and the final solution was a little out of the blue suspect wise and motivation wise. I just didn't get it. Then there was the side drama regarding a build up to some magical conflict that has been building in the last few books and that's just poof resolved? This felt very much like a final book, but a final book because the author did not know when writing whether there would be more requested from her publisher or not so she had to wrap things up in a way that provided a satisfactory series ending but kept the door open for possibly more. If this is the final book, I have enjoyed the series and would recommend it for cozy paranormal readers. If there will be more it will be interesting to see where the author takes the characters after the circumstances in which she left them all.

In spite of the murder and mayhem that occurs in each book, the series feels like a giant hug. As soon as I started Eight Enchanting Elixirs, I felt that I was snuggled in with great friends. One of author Lynn Cahoon's amazing talents is the ability to create characters who seem like people, like friends, even in the unusual circumstances in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series and even when the character is a dragon. I didn't want the book to end, but I was thrilled with the ending.
As much as I have focused on how much I love the characters, the unusual plots are amazing and intriguing and sometimes fun. There are always elements that I cannot figure out and that is rare for a cozy mystery.

Lynn Cahoon has 'wowed' me again, Eight Enchanting Elixirs is even better than I thought it would be! I have loved each book in the magical Kitchen Witch Mystery series, but this one is my favorite.
Mia has her hands full, what with her Grandmother Alice's dead Ex moving into the school and making changes. Someone has accused her of cheating on her witch test, forcing her to repeat it under the extra watchful eye of a coven representative. When a murder occurs, the pressure escalates and the mystery races on. I enjoyed the reveals and the new characters.

Eight Enchanting Elixirs by Lynn Cahoon
Eight Enchanting Elixirs is the latest and I believe the last Kitchen Witch mystery by Lynn Cahoon. This series is so fun and the magical plot twists just keep coming in this book. I love how this series has developed such a fun magic setting and how every character ends up with some connection to the town of Magic Springs. It has also been a joy to watch Mia and her friends form a real family and life together at the academy. The murder in this book is almost secondary to the many other subplots going on, but it is still an interesting puzzle to figure out and it had a satisfying resolution. The delightful wrap up to the series was so much fun to read, but I am a little sad to see it end. I’m glad Ms. Cahoon still has several other series that I can read.

Well, this was a fun ride. We definitely delved more into the magic system and world-building aspect in this book. There was lots and lots of drama too with a not-quite-dead beau returning for Mia's Gran and Trent being shut up in his house to train Cerby. Finn was a wonderful addition to the cast of characters, and I was glad to see a bit more of her in this book.
This series is drifting more and more from the traditional cozy storyline and to more of an overarching fantasy, which isn't a bad thing. The murder was a very small part of the plot in this book, though it was still important. I'm a little worried that this is meant to be the last book in the series given some of the events at the end. Hopefully not since there's still a few things that haven't been resolved. Either way, I'm pretty happy with it.

Mia had surprised everyone when she tested at a level 4 kitchen witch. Soon she hears there have been accusations that she cheated and will need to be retested. The testing is brutal and when the tester is found murdered, the first suspect is Mia. She has an alibi and tested at a 5 this time, but the testing and murder aren’t the only suspicious events. Mia’s boyfriend and the sheriff’s wife and new baby are required to do isolated in-house training for their little hellhounds (one of which is a Maltese pup!). Mia’s memories are tampered with and visions are implanted. Luckily, Mia has plenty of support with her circle of friends.
This is a fun witchy and supernatural beings series and Eight Enchanting Elixirs was a good mystery. The ending is warm and satisfying, too.

From the way this book ended, I’m guessing it’s the last one in the series. I hope I’m wrong but everything was just wrapped up so nicely from the main murder in the story to some other side mysteries. There were some fun revelations in the book too and by the time I read the Acknowledgments after the book, I could infer from what the author said that this was the happily ever after book of the series.
What an awesome book hangover! It’s just too bad the previous fun covers were changed. Now these new book covers look like every other magical story out there, kinda meh. If I was new to reading the series, I wouldn’t be drawn in by them. At least the old covers still exist here on Goodreads.

Eight Enchanting Elixirs is the eighth cozy mystery in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series. After Mia is accused of cheating on her witch exam she has to retake it, but when she retakes it she does better than anyone expected. The coven rep who tested her is angry at the outcome and when she turns up dead Mia gets pulled into the investigation. Mia jumps into the mystery without hesitation and is determined to figure out who killed the coven rep before it’s too late.
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and liked this latest mystery too. The mystery pulled me in and was easy to get engrossed in. I liked how this book really dive into the magical customs of the witches. I felt like there was more to the magic side of the series than there has been in the past books. This was an enjoyable cozy mystery and I’m excited to see if anything else comes in this series.

I have come to really love this series, and I’m worried this is the last one. But more on that in a moment. In this latest, we’re back with Mia and the gang, and this time they must be careful as an ex of Mia’s grandmother might expose magic to the town. Not only that, but someone in the coven is also after Mia, and they need to find out who before she’s taken down. I just loved this latest, and there are so many moments in this that are heartwarming, including a couple I can’t talk about with one being a complete surprise to me. This seemed like a wrap-up with many things changing at the end, and I’m hoping that this will not be the last book in the series. Fans of this series will be pleased with this latest book. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

While Trent is homebound for six week to train Cerby it seems someone had set a target on Mia. Claims that she cheated on her witch exam are taken seriously and Mia is forced to take the exam again. But when her tester is found dead the next day, Mia has a lot of splaining to do…especially if she wants to prevent someone from setting her up to take the fall for their murder.
I adore this series! Truly, I love every thing from this author though. She has a knack for writing stories that draw the reader in and then keep you there until you turn that last page and read that last word. Twists, turns, red herrings and all you will find this series to deliver on everything a cozy mystery should be.

I've read 4 out of 8 books in the series and I have to say this one is my favorite by far. I also like that you don't have to read in order to enjoy the story and know what's going on.
I enjoyed it mainly because of the dynamics of the characters and how they are so in sync and confident in their relationships that they were able to see through some things pretty quickly. It didn't make them solve it any faster but it helped them realize the problem. The addition of the 2 hellhounds and the baby dragon were a nice touch.
The evolution of Mia as a kitchen witch and the different types of magical beings in Magic Springs is what really keeps this fresh and fun.

Once again, we are back in Magic Springs, ID, a small town with magical vibes. I love this series and all the characters, including the four-legged and winged ones. Mia finds her witch credentials being challenged to the point of having to retake them. She passes a second time, much to the consternation of the witch conducting the test. When the tester winds up dead, suspicions abound all around. Mia and her circle of family and friends are determined to find the killer. There are so many things going on to keep the story lively and fun, making it one of my favorite series. I suggest you read the books in order as the characters can get a bit confusing. It is definitely a series to check out, though.
