WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU: A Southern Belle Book Club Novel by Shirley Jump:
Elizabeth Palmer the city girl from Jersey just uprooted herself, and heads out to Chatham Ridge, Georgia to write a story about a cowboy and his ranch,...the only thing is she runs into problems before she even gets there..Getting help from a wonderful book store owner..which ends her up on the porch of one Hunter McCoy's ranch...exactly where she's has to be, but she's drenched from the rain..He's a little mean to her...It goes from bad to worse real quick..
Hunter McCoy does not want some nosy reporter writing a story about his ranch...His whole livelihood is Silver Spur Ranch. The thing is Lizzie Palmer is getting under his skin big time. He hasn't let himself enjoy the company of another women for 2 years. It's too much.
Oh Man when Elizabeth meets Hunter she isn't quite sure what to make of him. She is forced to make a decsion. Run or stay and write this report even if he's being difficult. She needs this big time. It's her whole career on the line.
There is an attraction between them that they try to fight...they both know it's wrong. .she's leaving anyways..so what will happen? I suggest you order the book. It's fantastic. The beginning to a new series...A wonderful one to say the least..
Loved this book...sentimental, touching, heartwarming moments. Will make you cry and laugh.

I'm a great fan of Shirley Jump. Her stories are always more than the cookie cutter romance stories out there. You can always expect a little more spice with each book. Abd her stories are always unique to the other. the writing was great and the pace steady.
Though I will say I wish the sexual tension would have delayed a bit. Hunter should have been obliviously polite for a chapter or two. I'm yet to read a book like that and I think Shirley would be te one to pull off a romance story like that.
This book was about second chances in life and love. Hunter suffered a tragic loss when he lost his wife and he's still having a difficult time letting go. That is until a girl who pressed the redo button on her life and lives with her fingers crossed it will work out turns up in his house one rainy night.

Ah, guilt can really do a number on a guy especially when he is a tender-hearted, responsible, hard-working Georgia cowboy. He really needed the sassy Jersey girl reporter who came along wanting a story about his horses and in the meantime found a whole lot more than she was looking for in small town Chatham Ridge, the Southern Belles Book Club, Aunt Barbara Jean, and a stubborn hurting man.
This gentle, heartwarming story just hit the spot right at the moment I needed something easy going. I've enjoyed this author's books before. She has a knack for mixing light-hearted secondary characters, warm scenes, and characters who need to heal.
This is the first book in the series, but I was introduced to it previously in a crossover novella in the anthology that came out just prior. I love small town romance so it was an easy grab.
The story opens with Elizabeth Palmer arriving in Chatham Ridge to do a story for a magazine on the recent success of a local quarter horse ranch. It is her first writing job and she is a nervous wreck about succeeding after she chucked her accounting job to follow her dream. This is her first time doing something daring. Her mother was always a dreamer and one to chase such things and Elizabeth paid the price when there was never any stability in her life. Determined never to be like her mother, nonetheless, she was stifling in her old job and feeling a bit bruised when her ex left her for the gal upstairs in their apartment building. The change of scenery and new chance comes with her first encounter with Hunter McCoy. Her prospects aren't looking good when he announces that he has no intention of doing the interview and it was his aunt who set it up. He has a horse ranch to run and wants no reporter tagging along at his heels.
Hunter has been hurting and heartbroken for the last two years. His fiancee' is dead and it was his fault. Her angry, hurting father doesn't blame him more than he blames himself. Now, all he lives for is his horses and his ranch. His dad's gambling habits almost ruined it all, but Hunter is determined to bring it back to its former glory. What he doesn't need is some bubbly, sassy woman from Jersey making him feel things he doesn't want to feel. She may only be there to do a piece on the ranch, but she sees more than she should. He is torn between wanting her around for the light and laughter she brings to his life and getting rid of her before she gets past his emotional guard.
In the meantime, Hunter's sister, Amberlee, works to prove to everyone that she is quite grown up, his Aunt Barbara Jean has a chance at a late romance if she has the courage to go for it, and Elizabeth learns from the McCoys and the ladies of the Southern Belle Book Club what home and family really mean.
As I said, this was a gently-paced story. The plot isn't deep or tangly, but the conflict is there for two people who are trapped by their separate pasts. The pace was slow, but not boring. I loved all the additional details about the ranch, the daily life of the McCoys, and the fun inclusion of the book club ladies. The atmosphere is downhome cozy.
The characters were developed and had a strong backstory that played a part in the present. It is obvious to the reader what the real barriers are, but the hero and heroine are mired in their issues and struggle. Hunter is a good guy buried under pain and guilt which makes him cranky whenever anyone threatens to break through the wall he has put up. Elizabeth is a nice gal who is very busy trying to deny part of who she is out of fear that she will become her mother. I enjoyed seeing them grow internally away from their issues while building a tentative relationship.

The backdoor opened and Hunter walked in, as if conjured up merely by the conversation. He doffed his hat and cast an amused glace at his sister. "Did you just call me Grumpyface?"
"You're my brother. I can call you anything I want...And if you don't start being nice to Elizabeth here," Amberlee said, "I'm going to call you far worse things."
"You have been talking to our aunt. And she has been filling your head with all kinds of nonsense. I'm nice to Miz Palmer, aren't I?" He raised his gaze to Elizabeth's.
It was as if someone turned on an electric generator. When the two of them looked at each other, there was a hum in the air...

As to the romance, this was oh so carefully progressed forward as they first became friendly and started to open up and trust. They had the heat of attraction there all along that they denied and gave into in turn. I confess to getting a little impatient with the back and forth, but it made sense for what was going on with them personally. The expiration date on Elizabeth's stay is what finally forces the issue for the pair of them.
I loved the setting. I had no idea there were quarter horse breeding and training centers in Georgia since I always pictured that breed as a western ranch horse. But hey, why not. I've always enjoyed stories involving horses and those who handle them.
The kitchen at that ranch with Aunt Barbara Jean's cooking was my favorite place in the book, but the cozy reading area at Noralee's bookshop ran it a close second. I really want some of her cheesy jalapeno corn bread and chili and I wouldn't say no to her other dishes, either. There is food on every other page of this one between Barbara Jean and Noralee down at the bookstore with her baked goods.
Had to slip this one in:
Charlotte sat back in her seat. "Well damn. I really thought we had something juicy to discuss tonight."
"We do. Their called books." Suzie held one aloft, a romance novel featuring a bare-chested man wearing dog tags. "We can talk about men afterward. Books before brawn, remember?"
Amberlee sighed. "One of these days we'll have the books with the brawn."
"Sexy men to read to us. Now that's a club I'll join!" Charlotte laughed.
"That, my dear, would be a whole other kind of bookstore." Noralee laid the last platter of desserts on the table and took the lone empty seat. "So shall we get started?"

All in all, this was a cozy, satisfying contemporary romance. I look forward to visiting with the Southern Belles Book Club girls again and again. Those who like slightly spice small town romance should give this one a try.

When Somebody Loves You, The Southern Belle Book Club #1, by Shirley Jump

Elizabeth Palmer has always been the reliable girl who never acted on her dreams...until now. On a whim Elizabeth quits her job to become a freelance writer and her first assignment sends her to the adorable town of Chatham Ridge, Georgia. Elizabeth is shocked to see her assignment is the gorgeous quarter horse breeder Hunter McCoy. Hunter is anything but an easy interview and makes it known that he wants nothing to with Elizabeth or anyone else outside of his farm. As Elizabeth tries to make her dream a reality she also has to deal with her feelings for Hunter and try to break through his walls not only for her job but for her heart.
Really liked the idea of this story and especially the Southern Belle Book Club which is why I choose to read it. The beginning showed a lot of promise and I really enjoyed both Elizabeth and Hunter (even if he was a grouch). As the story progressed I found myself more interested in Hunter's aunt's romance than him or Elizabeth. There seemed to be something missing between these two which caused me to lose interest about halfway through.
I got very annoyed at how Hunter treated Elizabeth after a while and I really wanted her to stand up to him and make him face his past. I felt that we never got to see Elizabeth deal with her issues and talk about what brought her to Chatham Ridge. I felt the story mostly focused on Hunter and his past and Elizabeth was just there to fix him.
The only big saving grace, besides Hunter's aunt, was the Southern Belle Book Club. I loved these ladies and really hope we get more of them in the future. I am going to continue with this series just to see what happens to these women and hopefully get more book club time. I think this series has potential and I'm not giving up yet.

I enjoyed this light romance that was only about two people, one overly cautious and the other closed off. They were each dealing with their pasts in their own way and both a bit stubborn. I liked Elizabeth and Hunter from the start and just loved their friends and family who kept at them to see what was right before their eyes. I thought the small-town hokum talk was a bit much in the beginning so I was happy to see that ease off. This is just a feel good story set on a small town ranch and I loved it.

My Thoughts....
This was a first of 'The South Belle Bookclub series' for this author that was a well written story of 'dreams and broken hearts' for the two main characters...Elizabeth and Hunter. How these two came together with Elizabeth's now being new magazine writer job [wanting to follow her dreams]now hired as a freelance writer doing a story about Hunter's ranch. Both Elizabeth and Hunter have quite a past...with Elizabeth leaving Jersey, her job, a wired mother and a fiance who dumped her to her new job in Chatham Ridge. Now, meeting up with Hunter who is trying to run his Quarter Horse ranch with no thanks from his father with his gambling habit, also dealing with the grief and guilt of the death of his fiance. Now, we have Elizabeth on her new job trying to work with Hunter to get her story. How will this Elizabeth effect Hunter quite lifestyle? Will Hunter be able to come out of the rut he has been in due to all that has gone on in his life for some time? There will be some interesting secondary characters that will come into play in this book club that will really give the reader some humor. To get how this story will all come out you will have to pick up "When Somebody Loves You" to see for yourself how well it is presented by this author to her readers. Be ready to some well developed characters in this small town, a beautiful plot and a sexy romance.

Elizabeth Palmer is a woman who doesn't want to end up in a monotonous job, so she breaks away from the gray and goes to the small town of Chatham Ridge. She's to meet and write an article about Hunter McCoy. The rancher who is rebuilding his ranch and is doing amazing work with the horses, but is damaged by a heartbreak so strong that you wonder if he'll ever see the love that Elizabeth has for him.
A great start to a new series, The Southern Belle Book Club.
"When Somebody Loves You" is a beautifully written story of dreams and broken hearts. It has lots of feels and a wonderful, easy storyline to read. Makes you want to move to the south and soak up the atmosphere.

I picked this up randomly while browsing for romance at my library. The cover is abit corny but I thought to give it a try because of the book club and small town aspects!
Thirty year old Elizabeth Palmer has led a normal life: working in payroll while writing her company's monthly newsletter since her passion is writing and when the newsletter is cancelled, she can't see herself continuing in a career that feels dull. She wants to pursue what she loves or try. Add on that her boyfriend broke up with her for an older woman and she takes a chance to visit Silver Spur Ranch to interview it's owner, Hunter McCoy.
Hunter has guilt over losing his first love in an accident (I figured that out in the early part of the book even though it's not clear yet). He doesn't want a nosy reporter following him around while he runs his horse ranch. But Elizabeth's persistence starts to loosen him up.
What was unique about this book is that the story follows other supporting characters like Hunter's Aunt Barbara Jean and his sister, Amberlee who has asthma. She feels smothered because her brother and aunt are always worried about her symptoms acting up. I liked how the family deals with her chronic condition and her own internal battle to have freedom. Whilst Barbara has given her life to raising her nephew and niece, now it is her turn to pursue love.
The writing wasn't always great and there were parts that dragged but the small town horse ranch setting was lovely to read.

The romance was very flat for me. There's an immediate attraction but he's pushing her away for "reasons" and she doesn't want to be unprofessional by sleeping with an interview subject on her first real freelance writing job. It's Insta-Lust that morphs into Insta-Love in a matter of days. The world building was good and some of the secondary characters were fun, but a meh read for me.

It was a second chance love story you just couldn't put down once you started reading. Hunter carried the weight and guilt on his shoulders for his family and ranch. It took Elizabeth showing up at the right time to change both of their lives around. A well written perfectly paced story.

I have enjoyed this author’s books before, so I jumped at the chance when I saw she was starting a new series. I love small town romances and when you add in a cranky ranch owner and a city girl, it is even better.
Elizabeth Palmer is a city girl from Jersey who has always prided herself on being responsible and steady, unlike her mother. Elizabeth had a chaotic upbringing, never knowing what her mother was going to do or where they would end up and she definitely does not want to follow in her footsteps. So her newest move is a departure for her, but after her fiancé dumps her she realizes she is working at a dead-end job with a life going nowhere so she decides to follow her dream of becoming a writer when a magazine accepts her idea for a freelance story about a horse ranch.
Hunter McCoy owns a large well known Quarter Horse ranch; he has been busy trying to keep it running after his father almost bankrupt it with his gambling habits. So the last thing he needs is a nosey city gal coming around writing an article and getting in his way. He is still dealing with the grief and guilt of the death of his fiancé and is not in the mood for a feisty woman that is getting under his skin. But no matter how much he denies it, she is making him feel again.
This is a cute romance full of tender hearted moments and quirky characters. I enjoyed reading this first book in a new series from an enjoyable author.
I like Elizabeth, a woman who does not want to repeat what her mother did during her life but is at a crossroads and wants to follow her dream. Yet no matter how she looks at it, she is leaving a steady job for something untried, and she struggles with this throughout the book as it hampers her from moving forward. She does feel welcome in this place and I enjoyed watching her grow and appreciate her surroundings as she gets to know the residents. Plus I love that she joins the Southern Belles Book Club, those ladies are a hoot.
Hunter is a wonderful hero, a tender hearted man who feels the guilt of his fiancé’s death. He has been stuck in this rut for several years and the ranch has suffered. He knows the ranch needs the publicity but hates when Elizabeth interrupts his quiet lifestyle, he is gruff and cranky toward her but in a good way. As she settles herself into the town and becomes friends with everyone, he becomes rattled and confused.
Both Hunter and Elizabeth are immediately attracted to each other yet have issues from their pasts that keep them from acting upon their desires, yet the sexual tension grows throughout the story. I like them together, they are genuine and it feels true.
The pace is a bit slow as their relationship builds from a growing friendship and attraction, but it works well. I like many of the secondary characters, they are a large part of the story and several provide some hilarious antics. I love Noralee and those book club ladies and I am also intrigued by the secondary stories of Hunter’s sister Amberlee and his aunt Barbara, both spreading their wings a bit. All in all a cute, small town romance with interesting characters, heartwarming plot and a sizzling romance to please many readers.

This is a really good story with enough complexity of characters to keep the reader interested. Hunter McCoy, when we are introduced to him, exists rather than lives. He has decided after experiencing a terrible loss that he won’t expose his heart again. Living and breathing hard work in maintaining his horses and building the reputation of his business, he feels is all he requires. Then Elizabeth arrives at his door requesting an interview. Hunter despises giving interviews and tries his hardest to stay away from her. What he didn’t count on was the tenacity Elizabeth had and the feelings she was bringing to the surface. He knows that he can never be responsible for loving anyone again and yet??
Elizabeth arrives in Georgia and finds herself actually warming herself to the small town life. Being a city girl she soon finds out that she is not dressed to give an interview to an obstinate horse breeder who definitely does not want her around. When he finds that this is her first interview he shows even more reluctance. Determined to get the story Elizabeth immerses herself into the life of the ranch and the town. Hunter is a hard nut to crack however her determination soon wins him over. Do both have too much baggage to move forward? The chemistry is there but the past brings up barriers.
Shirley Jump not only gives us a good romance but is able to keep the story moving. She interweaves past and present problems within the family and town characters and gives closure to the reader. A truly enjoyable read and I would recommend it to all fellow romance readers.

Love can heal almost any wound in When Somebody Loves You . Shirley Jump’s first Southern Belle Book Club novel is a story of taking a leap of faith and risking your heart.
In a bid to live a vastly different life than her mother, Elizabeth Palmer has always played by the rules. When she finally can’t take her grey, responsible life anymore, she goes after her dream of being a writer and travels from New Jersey to Georgia to write an article on quarter horse breeder Hunter McCoy. Hunter also likes routine, and since the death of his fiancée, his ranch has become his world. Elizabeth’s arrival upsets his orderly life and the two of them find their worlds turned upside down by an attraction neither expected. It’s easy to like Elizabeth and Hunter – they are smart, hardworking people who each have vulnerabilities that tug on the heartstrings. They fit one another like lock and key, and though there is some arguing and sexual tension, it’s clear these two are made for one another. Indeed, there’s nothing to dislike about When Somebody Loves You , but I found myself wanting more. Everything is a bit too perfect and orderly, which is surprising since this is a story where the hero and heroine have to throw caution to the wind and risk their hearts for a chance at love. The story felt a bit too obviously structured, and though Elizabeth and Hunter were well developed, the supporting cast was largely two-dimensional. When Somebody Loves You has a lot of possibility, but the story never truly grabbed me and I wish it had a bit more depth. That being said, there are some sentimental moments that are truly touching and the story is enjoyable overall.

This was a bit disappointing because I wanted to learn more about the book club members. Perhaps future books in the series will flesh out the secondary characters more. For me there is always something appealing about a series set in a small town (I blame the Andy Griffith show of my childhood) and the fact that this small town not only has a bookstore but a group of ladies who meets there regularly for book club made it much more special. I liked When Somebody Loves You, in fact it was a fantastic introduction to a new to me author and a romance on the sweeter side which I tend to enjoy. Interesting characters, engaging dialog and a well paced romance made this an entertaining story.
I liked the somewhat sassy yet careful heroine Elizabeth Palmer, she was somewhat of a conundrum as she took a big risk to leave her job and her home and set out to fulfill a dream which was quite out of character for her. It was interesting watching her adapt to new surroundings, a life very unlike anything she'd ever known and people who drew her in to their circle immediately which not only surprised her but melted her heart. I also enjoyed the fact that he got under Hunter McCoy's skin from the moment he met her. Hunter was every bit the brooding man but with Elizabeth around or as he nicknamed her, Lizzie, it became evident that there was more to the man than the hard shell he'd become after a tragedy struck him 2 years prior.
I liked these two together and loved watching them discover things about one another, finding mutual admiration in the way they approached life and in the way their love began to grow and flourish. I especially liked that it wasn't easy for either one of them and even though the relationship progressed rather quickly that neither one took it lightly.
Sometimes secondary characters really add to a story and that was completely true in this book. From bookstore owner and seemingly professional matchmaker Noralee, to the Southern Belle book club members and to Aunt Barbara Jean it was so easy to get caught up in their lives and the town, but they all were important to the story and without them the book would not have been the same.
While I would have liked to have had a bit more time with this couple before the last chapter, I also can't be sad about the ending because it was everything I wanted to happen and everything the Southern Bell Book Club expects in the books they read; an enjoyable sweet romance with a feisty heroine, a ruggedly handsome hero, a happily ever after and I can't wait to see what comes next in this series.

Elizabeth has always had a dream of becoming a reporter, and she's decided that it's time to chase that dream. No matter how difficult that may be. Hunter owns a stable that is used for breeding, and he's one of the best at doing what he does. Elizabeth thinks that this deserves a spotlight in a magazine, when she gets the green light to go forward with the article there's only one hitch. The fact that Hunter does not want to give her an interview. Making sure she gets it - this is, after all, what she quit her job for - she stays with Hunter as long as it takes to get the interview. Along the way some pasts get dug up and some feelings become present. Will Hunter give her an interview?
I'm not usually one for cowboys. I just recently read a couple books with cowboys that I liked. But as I look back on the book, they're more so set in a city and there's a cowboy who goes to a ranch to work. Not being set at the ranch. I had a hard time with this story just for that reason. I also was driven insane by Elizabeth. She kept being wishy-washy with her feelings. She'd be fantasizing about Hunter and then be like whoa, no, can't do that - don't even like him. I feel like, as a girl, if I don't like a guy I don't fantasize about him. So she should've just been like "time to keep this professional". I kept wanting to grab her and shake her until she realized she had feelings for Hunter.
Hunter was a sweet man. He had manners, and he was proper with how he treated women. I liked that. But, like I previously stated, he was a cowboy. I had a hard time dealing with his cowboy tendencies. I feel like if I gave this book to any of my friends who love cowboys and want to find one for themselves they would absolutely love Hunter and everything that this book represents. Whereas for me, it just left a bad taste in my mouth; so to speak.

When Somebody Loves You by Shirley Jump is the 1st book in her new The Southern Belle Bookclub series. This was a very nice romance of an unlikely couple that looked like it was destined to fail, as neither of them were interested in any kind of relationship.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Palmer, our heroine, has lived all her life wanting to change her life and do what she always dreamed of doing. She uproots herself, takes a job as a journalist, and leaves New Jersey to go to a small town in Georgia, to interview and write up an article on an reclusive quarter horse breeder.
Hunter McCoy is our hero, and from the start he isn’t very friendly to Elizabeth, when she arrives for the prearranged interview for her magazine. Hunter has closed himself off emotionally, after the tragic death a few years ago of his Fiancee to a tragic accident that he blames himself. Hunter is also over protective of his sister, preventing her from joining him on the ranch to help train and breed horses.
Though Hunter is difficult, Lizzie finds him very attractive, and does all she can to keep her feelings private. She is openly welcomed by Hunter’s aunt and sister, as well as the ladies of the Southern Belle Bookclub. For the first time in her life, she feels comfortable, and happy in this environment, especially with new found friends.
This was a fun and sweet story, as Hunter slowly falls for Lizzie, allowing his heart to melt. Lizzie already knows she has fallen for Hunter, who begins to act nice, and even romantically. They both have their own issues; Hunter learning to cope with the tragedy, and learning to let go; Lizzie being afraid to give herself a chance in a new town, with friends, and a possible love. Will Hunter and Lizzie find a way to come together? You will need to read this book to find out.
Shirley Jump created some very likeable characters, and I look forward to seeing many of them get their own stories as the Southern Belle Bookclub continues.

Hunter has closed himself off emotionally, after the tragic death a few years ago of his Fiancee to a tragic accident that he blames himself. Hunter is also over protective of his sister, preventing her from joining him on the ranch to help train and breed horses.
Though Hunter is difficult, Lizzie finds him very attractive, and does all she can to keep her feelings private. She is openly welcomed by Hunter’s aunt and sister, as well as the ladies of the Southern Belle Bookclub. For the first time in her life, she feels comfortable, and happy in this environment, especially with new found friends.
This was a fun and sweet story, as Hunter slowly falls for Lizzie, allowing his heart to melt. Lizzie already knows she has fallen for Hunter, who begins to act nice, and even romantically. They both have their own issues; Hunter learning to cope with the tragedy, and learning to let go; Lizzie being afraid to give herself a chance in a new town, with friends, and a possible love. Will Hunter and Lizzie find a way to come together? You will need to read this book to find out.
Shirley Jump created some very likeable characters, and I look forward to seeing many of them get their own stories as the Southern Belle Bookclub continues.

Its opposites attract in the country for Liz and Hunter. Hunter is the straight and narrow while Liz is.. well, not so much. Hunter helps Liz grow up and settle down a little bit, Liz helps Hunter pull his head out of his sorrow long enough to realize that they need one another.
Not much on the action front but plenty on the emotional one. When Somebody Loves You is a slow woo me romance for the cool cuddly nights to curl up with.

This is a bit of a step away from the usual Shirley Jump books. It's not an easy, short summer read. This is a very involved character study about a man with many demons who is thrown together with a female reporter who is there to profile him for a magazine and, that is the very last thing he wants or needs. He also doesn't want to feel what he feels for this determined, recalcitrant woman who refuses to be put off. He fights his attraction every step of the way while she fights to do whatever she can to help him find his own happiness again, no matter whether or not it destroys her heart in the process.

This book was hard to put down. I haven't found a book like that for a while! I think I found a new favorite author since this is my first Shirley Jump book. When I read the initial synapses on the back, I thought...yeah, a heroine from Jersey. Hopefully she will have the spunk of a true Jerseyite; and Ms Jump didn't fail in that. I would have liked it better if she was from the better part of the state, IMO, but what do you expect from a south Jersey transplant. I also like how there was an additional love story in this book, although taking it away wouldn't have ruined this sweet romance.

For such a prolific writing these characters were very superficial. The only conflict between Hunter and Elizabeth is getting past their own internal conflicts. Sadly, the secondary characters were vastly more interesting than the two main character.
It was a sweet, easy read and I look forward to enjoying the next Southern Belle Book Club book.
