In the heart of a crumbling village once rich with magic, eight-year-old Hazel Firelight has always lived in Darkness – hiding in alleyways, watching trades from the shadows, and obeying her parents' every command. Hazel thought she knew the stay quiet, stay hidden, stay safe. But when a deal becomes ominous, Hazel’s world is violently torn apart in a single, blood-soaked night. She runs – hunted and desperate to wake up from the nightmare she’s lived through.
Forced to survive, Hazel falls into a world her parents once reigned in the territory of Emberlee – taking over their trading network and working to stay ahead of the monsters that surround her. A decade later, when a deal brings a set of ancient, glowing stones into her hands – stones that pulse with a forgotten magic – the cost becomes too high. A chance encounter with a fiery blacksmith reveals a twisted pattern behind the chaos – and forces Hazel to face terrifying secrets.
Once her best friend becomes a target of the same monster that stole everything from her, Hazel must decide what she’s willing to become to stop it. Will she do what it takes to save what means most or fall headfirst into the Darkness? Forgotten prophecies whisper of a power awakening inside her. But as she uncovers the truth behind this power, she learns the Darkness isn’t just overtaking the territory... It’s inside of her.

this is a DEBUT!?
i am in absolute AWE of this story. i knew when i found regan’s page and began seeing her promotions for it that i was going to love it, but even with everything i saw, i wasn’t prepared at all.
a couple of things i really loved about this book were how the world building grew with the story and wasn’t just shoved down our throats AND the timing of how we learned what happened in the past to lead up to everything going on in the present. i think it was done beautifully.
now for the characters 🤭 the found family in this book was so heartwarming and i want to hug every single character and never let go. hazel and lavender are my BABIES and i would die for both of them. the relationships that develop within this friend group are so beautiful they had me clutching my heart and sobbing multiple times.
I WILL SAY, i need more from torran (PLEASE, I WILL BEG) because i know i’m going to love him so much more if we get to know him deeper 🥹
if you love fantasy worlds with prophecies, fae, witches, and headstrong characters, i fully believe you will devour this book just as i did!🖤
regan, my beautiful friend, i am so proud of you. i have loved following along with you on this journey and seeing this book become what it is today. you have worked so hard on this and i have a feeling it’s going to be HUGE. i cannot wait to make everyone i know read it and i can’t wait for more from this world. 🥹
thank you so much for trusting me with an early copy of this story, i will treasure my time in Emberlee forever 🖤
Stepping into Regan’s first novel following Hazel and Ronan felt like peeking into a window of a long awaited home that has finally been built, carefully crafted with love, comfort and a sense of compassion that comes from a place in a person who has needed to find healing in storytelling. When you break down these characters and their pasts, we see a variety of mental health themes and how these friends and new found family are able to lean on each other and build each other up throughout their travels and adventures. Fate brought our main characters Ronan and Hazel back together after years of being apart, and through loss, pain and a prophecy that is pieced together throughout the story, we see that not only falling in love amidst high stakes but healthy communication (from a man? love!), support, friendship and a little (okay, a lot) of tension keep our lovers above the high waters. Paired with the story of true friendships on both sides of our main characters and the trauma that families face together and apart, we see how important it is to talk about our mental health to overcome what has kept us hidden away from others; and the darkness that resides inside of us brings us to making choices that will alter our future greatly. When light and dark are fighting against one another, which will we choose to guide us? And though the tagline of the story is “Rule or be ruled,” I think the underlying idea that our pasts and the person that our struggles have turned us into can always be changed by choosing to leave behind the darkness we carry with us, even if we have to cover ourselves in it first in order to find our light again. Hazel has found a power inside of her that is new to her but has always been with her, and with the help of her loved ones and the ache of the need for revenge, she’s able to discover and grow parts of her that evolve her even deeper into the strong woman she has always had to be.
I am so honored to have been able to read this ARC, and I am thrilled to see just how much the author evolves as a writer in her next books.
