Goosebumps Graphix #4

Slappy's Tales of Horror

Rate this book
The talented Dave Roman creates the horrifying drawings for "The Night of the Living Dummy," the origin story about that most evil of all ventriloquist dummies, Slappy!

In "A Shocker on Shock Street," Jamie Tolagson captures the chilling tale of a brother and sister doing their dream testing rides in a movie studio theme park, where the special effects are REALLY special.

With his shadowy illustrations, Gabriel Hernandez creates the perfect atmosphere in "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp," a spooky story about a boy and his dog who go sniffing around in a lonely swamp . . . and wish they hadn't.

Ted Naifeh is at his creepy best in "Ghost Beach," a scary ghost story about a brother and sister who investigate a local legend and discover a terrible secret about their family.

This was a buddy read with my 8 year old daughter. Honestly, she's probably not the target age for this graphic novel, but she's always gravitated towards the scarier stuff , so it didn't surprise me that she grabbed this one from the library. Or that she loved it so much she decided to do her book report on it.
Bless her teacher!

Anyhoo, it's a graphic novel (duh) with 4 different scary stories, and 4 different artists.
So how did it stack up?
For the small fry, it was a 10 out of 10! <--her words
And her favorite story was the 2nd one, The Werewolf of Fever Swamp.

description

For me, though, it was only a passable read. I thought the dialogue was awful, but then again...I'm an adult, so who cares what I think?!

I do think this is geared toward children older than 8, though. So, for the love of all that is good and holy, DO NOT buy this for your 2nd grader, then get pissed at me because they won't sleep in their bed by themselves for the next two months. Seriously.
KNOW YOUR KID.
However, if your child likes spooky shit, then yes, this is something that will probably be right up their alley.

Edit: [Name Redacted] says I'm wrong about the FNAF storyline, but has (fortunately) been gracious enough to detail it for me in the comment section. Thanks, Redacted!

I loved the book. It was so amazing. If you want these stories, "A Shock on Shock Street," "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp," "Ghost Beach," and most of all, "Night of the Living Dummy," you're golden. I recommend this great book to the fans of Goosebumps and who loves R.L. Stine. I loved the book because I love the series, and as always, it has twists and turns. Enjoy.

This book has multiple stories in it. Each story has its own unique touch to it that will try to scare you out of your skin. I rate this book a 3 out of 5 because it didn't really give me a scare. This book is also a quick read.

This was a super fun read; I love the idea of a Goosebumps book in a comic form. The illustrations were awesome too. I will definitely keep my eye out for the other 3 books.

Four different Goosebumps stories presented graphically by 4 artists.

The best story was the first one- A Shocker on Shock Street. Good storyline and the graphics were well done and fit the tone of the story. Alone this would have been a 4/5 read.

Unfortunately, the other three stories missed the mark for me. Mostly it was the art style that did it in.

I was most interested in reading The Night of the Living Dummy, and was disappointed. The art style was too comical and the storyline became muddled with the girls getting ventriloquist gigs and competing with each other.

Loved this, perfect for spooky season and a fun read for in-between books. They have pretty dark illustrations. This would be perfect for the older kids for sure.

This book is about 4 tales in so the first book is "A shocker on shock street" and the characters for that are Erin and her dad Mr. Wright also her friend Josh. Soon you'll find out why they called it shocker on shock street! So now the second story is "The werewolf of fever swamp" and the characters are mom and dad. Of course the main character which is Grady Tucker and they're other characters later buy you'll find them later! Third story is "Ghost Beach" and the main character is Jerry and his sister Terri and the grandma and grandpa and later other characters but that'll ruin the story. Last but not least is "Night of the living dummy" and the main characters are Kris and Lindy also Mom and Slappy! Another character but again you have to find it out yourself! Now my favorite part is the ending of the last story maybe you'll find out why I like it because I'm not telling you because I'll spoil it! I recommend this book to the readers of R.L Stine and if you like scary comics!!!

This last Goosebumps novel has four comics in color, with Slappy introducing each one in a witty way. I wouldn't call it "#4" in the series because it has a story from each of the previous comics, with only one new tale at the end.

A Shocker On Shock Street
Okay what can I say about this one. It seems not a lot like the episode. And I love the way the art still is in this book. All of the creatures did not look like special effects. Okay I seen the episode, and it still got me knowing this kids are robot's. All in all this was a good one. Doe robot's the kids do seem life like. Makes me feel sad for Mr. Weight that he has to program kids to have a kid. Rate 3.5 stars

The Werewolf Of Fever Swamp
Okay wow I loved this one. I have never read the book book, but dang I want to so bad. I love wolves, and I love werewolves. I have seen the episode of this one, and it is so much different from what I have read. This sister is older and the dog's name is different. I really liked this one. I would say the only thing I didn't like was that it was not longer. And I love the end of this the werewolf passes the cruse to Grady. I love the quote at the end of the book. " Now I'm the werewolf of fever swamp". " AND I'M READY TO HUNT"! Rate 5.5 stars

Ghost Beach
Okay this one loved the story way better then the episode. The art work was so amazing love the design of the characters in this book. I haven't read the book book, but dang this is really wanted me to read them. This story was so good my heart was pounding, and I was thinking come on you don't know poor kids. Wow I don't remember the episode having a dog in it. Wow the guy inside of the book dang he was creepy looking, Rate 5.5 stars

Night Of The Living Dummy
Oh yeah I really liked this one. They way they did Slappy wow. I just got done reading the book book. Let me tell you wow its is so much like the book, but the only down side is that they have to shorten the story. I wish it would have been the whole book that would have been amazing. I cant wait to read more like this. I love the way Mr. Wood looked in this also he doesn't look like I thought he would. Then again there did the girls or there mom. They didn't show the dad in the story. Rate 5.5 stars

All in all I loved this and its something that I will be reading over and over again. And I would so recommend this book to anyone you wants to just have a quick read.

1. I loved Goosebumps books as a kid and own them all as an adult, so I was happy to find this graphic novel. It reminds me of the Baby-Sitters Club books becoming graphic novels.
2. I am terrified of ventriloquists and dolls and marionettes because of an episode of Tales from the Crypt about a marionette that came to life named Coco. AND the movie Child’s Play ruined me.
3. I like that each story had a different illustrator.
4. I liked the plot twist of the two kids being robot children in the story A Shocker on Shock Street.
5. In Ghost Beach the characters had scary claw hands. I liked the like triple twist of that story though.
6. Wow. Really original. The kids’ names are Jerry and Terri...

I loved RL Stine when I was in middle school and these four stories in this elementary-friendly graphic novel are actually pretty creepy. Recommended to me by seven year old son.

This is one of the most hard to review Goosebumps books because it’s literally just a bind-up. I’ve never counted bind-up books (like monster editions, collections, etc.) as they’re own reads wether I read the bind-up or the books separately. But for this fourth and final addition to the Goosebumps Graphix run, I have to include it because of exclusive stuff. I will be counting the three reused stories towards the score, since this will be my only bind-up book that I’ll ever make a video review on… at some point. The main three stories are all the same score, nine out of tens, and if you want more info on them, read my other Graphix reviews. Back on track, there are Slappy monologues between each story that are just transitional thingamabobs. The most I can say about them is that they would’ve been cool if they were included in the other three. They’re fine. But the main-course is Night of the Living Dummy—sadly another weak story. It has all the faults of the original material in it; the wasted first 3/4s, annoying characters, boring plot. But the second half is again an improvement. What more can I say? It’s a great adaptation of a mediocre story. But the fucking art style is cringeworthy. I hate graphic novels and the more I read these Goosebumps ones make em realize why. This is just that c-c-c-cringe ahh dork diary one piece girly ahh style that I’ve grown to despise. But yeah, mid ass final read. But, of course, with the three other amazing stories, the score will be a lot higher overall. I also must say that the colorized versions are improvements from their black-and-white counterparts, especially with Shock Street. Rating time!

A Shocker on Shock Street - 9.5/10
The Werewolf of Fever Swamp - 9/10
Ghost Beach - 9/10
Night of the Living Dummy - 5/10

Overall - 8/10. What can I say? Three great stories with a small stinker at the end. If I read these stories back to back, I’d be happy.

Obviously I wasn't expecting classic literature, but I had been reading all these excruciatingly long books and I wanted something short and sweet. (Okay, so this isn't sweet, but you get the point.)

I have this giant stack of books that I've got from book orders that I've been wanting to read. I try to read the books before I put them in my school library. I LOVED Goosebumps as a kid and this book was a graphic novel so I knew it would be quick and I dived in. I was especially happy to see it was a collection of short stories - even better!

It was a blast. (from the past!) My favorite story was the first one about Shocker Street. It was fun that all the stories were illustrated by different artists so you got to see lots of styles.

Great fun!

I was a little disappointed that 2/3 of the book was a reprint, but it was nice to see a couple previously published adaptations in color. I've long maintained that the Goosebumps stories are better suited for short story adaptations, and even more so in the comics format.I'd love to see Scholastic adapt more of these.

I never realized how well these would work as comics. There’s a few tweaks and modernizing of the stories but for the most part they are close enough to the books.

I think the easiest one to swallow is Shocker on shock street. Solid artwork and the story flows well for this structure.

It’s interesting that all 4 stories were done by different artists. Most I didn’t know until I looked their stuff up.

Night of the Living Dummy is oddly the weakest of the bunch in every way. Of course this could be because Slappy is only a side character.

Ghost Beach is my favorite Goosebumps book and it’s simple story flows well and the art fit well.

Werewolf of Fever Swamp is a classic Goosebumps book so its great to see it here. Solid artwork but the conclusion flies by so fast in an otherwise bloated feeling story (here not the original book).

I don’t have time to constantly re-read the books so having them in a quicker digestive manner is great.

Continuing with my horror books for October.
This time I picked up a kids horror graphic novel by R.L. Stine.

There are 4 stories in this graphic novel.

The first story was my favorite. The art wasn't attractive but it was effective. The use of colors and sound effects really help set the tone. I was also afraid of how it ended but it didn't disappoint. It had the classic R.L. Stine touch to the ending.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the 2nd story but I ended up liking it. The art was pretty meh but again it was effective. The colors and style were great for a swamp feeling.

The 3rd story has pretty meh artwork and story for me. I guessed the ending right away which was a disappointment. The final story was also the same. However, this might be great for kids (trying to keep perspective that I'm an adult and not the target audience)

This will be a good one to recommend to kids in middle school and younger.

I didn't know Goosebumps had turned their stories graphic (although I probably should have guessed) so I had to pick this up from the library. I didn't read Goosebumps as a kid so I hoped this would help me catch up on ones I missed from tv.

This is a kids' book so I'm going to rate it as such, but quite honestly, I don't know how to feel about the VASTLY different styles they've brought together for the four stories in this collection. Based on the audience, the intention isn't to wow with artistic prowess and some of the lacking panels/style was totally excusable.. the change from one artist to another was just odd, I guess.

If you're to read any of them for the nostalgia, my favorite was "A Shocker on Shock Street" illustrated by Jamie Tolagson. 3.5/5 Stars

“Slappy and other stories” GREAT It is a bunch of short stories all in one book. It has scars to remember and frightens to read at night. This book is about a bunch of slappy's short horror stories that are amazing. R.L.Stine tries to scare us by the character that Slappy plays. The stories all had a big impact on the reader and the characters. The different stories had a lot of twists to a lot of bad endings. That's why I love this book. I can relate to R.L.Stine and why he wrote this because I like horror stories and horrifying characters too. This is why I recommend this book to anyone!

This was a little terrifying ha! A graphic novel version of four of the Goosebumps stories. I think some of my kids will love this! As a kid, I adored the books and this version seems even scarier because you’ve got some incredible depictions of the characters! Each story is illustrated by a different illustrator and the different styles are all brilliant. You’ve got ghosts, werewolves, dummys and scary rides all in this! (Dummys are not for me tho!)

3.5 stars...this was better than I expecting. I almost aways find Goosebumps books disappointing/underwhelming. I don't like the writing style...so I thought I would give one of the graphic novels a try and I thought this was fun! There are 4 stories in this one and I really liked 2 of them and the other 2 were just ok. But I would read A Shocker on Shock Street again and also Ghost Beach. Those were my 2 favorites in here. I think I may try another Goosebumps graphic novel sometime.

Not bad, some of the some of the stories sounded familiar but a couple of them really freaked me out especially the first one about the "robot children" in the amusement park...the ending was so f-ed up, were they actually robots? Was the dad in it all along? Crazy. Not sure how I felt about the different art style for each story, had to readjust everytime.

In this book you will read scary stories told from slappy's Tales of Horror. I really liked the book and the stories I would say that my favorite on was the 2nd one mostly because I my opinion that was the most scary out of them all. I think you should read this book because if you were an R.L. Stine fan like me then you will like this book because it has some of really good stories.
