“Curiosity is what makes you tick, Alice. Maybe you should start there.”
Book besties, I cannot stress enough how obsessed I am with not only The Girl In the Mirror, but the Meadowbrook duology as a whole. I’ve got an entirely new record for how fast I smashed this ARC, and while my sleep schedule is thoroughly destroyed, I am fulfilled as a reader lmao. Thank you so much to G.B. Bancroft once more for having me along as an ARC reader!!!!
Our story picks up from the end of book 1 where Alice has been forced back into Meadowbrook by Maven (Who is terrible!!! The worst actually!!). However, she finds another portal and is able to get back and enter the tournament with Ori that decides the next rulers of Arcadia. I particularly enjoyed these trials as they had a nice balance of mental and physical strength components to them which allowed for character growth & progression. I personally appreciated the mental health representation throughout the book as well. It felt very real and I identified with Alice quite a bit.
It’s not just the trials though, Alice, Ori, Jessa, and Harley are finally reunited and that made my little disaster-bi heart swoon, blush, giggle, etc.!!!! I love how awkward Ori is and his interactions with Harley. The boyfriends finally become boyfriends!!!!! There’s another chase scene between Jessa and Alice, extra hot- I’ll take 15 more of these please. All of the intimacy that is explored between our beloved MCs just hits all the marks for me. Also, the banter? Good lord, it’s fantastic lmao. So many witty interactions that had my brain on fire. Is it too early to re-read my ARC again?
Lastly, I am a [redacted character bc potential spoilers?] second chance, redemption arc truther lol. It’s not hard to figure out exactly who I’m talking about here, but the way G.B. Bancroft writes this said boi…I’m all in on a spin off if one were ever written lol lol lol.
I have been antsy to get my hands on this book since TBITP. I was lucky to be an ARC reader for that one too! G.B. has done a fantastic job of pulling you right back to the end of the last book. The way you can feel the emotions of all the characters through the way she writes. You’re standing right there next to Alice on the arena floor. You’re right there when Ori is stalking towards her. You’re in the middle of the Harley/Jessa cuddle puddle. I got so sucked in. I read it pretty fast cause I needed to know what happened next. The anxiety, anticipation, indecision, the many flavors of fear, love and hope.
It’s beautiful.
Oh, and that epilogue….trust me, it’s worth the wait.
First, thank you G.B. for the ARC! Wow, where do I start? When I say I DEVOURED this book, I mean I was literally sneaking pages while at work because I could not put it down! This was a beautiful end to the Meadowbrook Duet. Not only do we get action (in tourney form) but we also get ACTION. The spice is SPICY in this book. We also get Alice coming into her own, and honestly being entirely relatable in how she deals with all the changes stepping into the mirror portal brings. I loved the amount of character growth we saw from our adorable polycule and I'm glad they all got the ending they did. Thank you G.B. for creating a duet that I deeply resonated with.
review of advanced copy given by author: a fun, mega spicy ending to the story! this tied everything up together so nicely, and i really appreciate how each character was allowed to grow. giving space and time for the kingdom to be restored really made sense with the way the story was put together!
the maze and camping trip were suspenseful and fun, but the third trial fell really flat for me. i thought alice was going to have to confront herself in a more challenging way to show her growth, and the heart/crown was a bit obvious for my taste.
overall, a really satisfying (😏) finish to the duology!

Oh this was a great ending to Alice, Harley, Jessa, and Ori's story! I loved watching their relationships grow and bloom. I would absolutely read more about them or this world, but all in all I was very satisfied with how things ended. I won't get into details because spoilers but very good story, well written, and great characters.
What a conclusion! This was so fun, a little spicy, and I think it handled mental health well. My only complaint is that I personally feel like we didn’t get enough of Alice and Ori’s relationship.
