This made for a very quick read.

The story was pretty fast paced, filled with shooting and explosions, there is rarely a dull moment.

Olivia is on the brink of possible unemployment at her newspaper place. Even though she was repeatedly told to back off on this story that she was investigating on her own time....which probably would have been a good idea to back off now that she has gotten caught up in the murder and mess following it.

The person actually behind all of the events surrounding the murder, kidnapping and attacks is quite unexpected and somewhat surprising. Which is a good thing because it made it less predictable. Plus a few other side characters made for good surprises when everyone is isolated from the rest of society and help when the bad guys with guns come blazing in.

The action is pretty much non-stop. First with the explosion and killing of the owner of the construction site that was doing shady business and practices, then the attempted kidnapping of Olivia, the chases and fighting with the masked crew at Daniel's house, the showdown between the kidnapper and Olivia and the big reveal (the 'mastermind' behind all this).

I wish there was less praying. I feel like every time something critical happens or when someone is in danger, Olivia or Daniel is praying. That kind of got annoying and on my nerves for some reason.

Chronologically, this book comes before the True North Bodyguards Series; but other than the most obvious spoiler, I wasn't disadvantaged by reading it afterwards instead of first. There are many twists and turns but much of the plot is typical of this genre and fairly predictable. I wanted to read this because, having been introduced to the characters, Daniel and Olivia, in the True North Bodyguards Series, I was curious to know more of their story; so, I went looking to see if the author had written it previously and was pleased to find that she had.

"The characters demonstrate strength and faith to face numerous challenges. There are a few surprises along the way concerning who is involved and why" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).

Reporter Olivia Brant is an eye witness to murder and saved from the criminals by a former bodyguard who also happened to be nearby. Now she seems to be a target as she digs deeper into the dead man's under world connections. She also is drawn into closer contact to her rescuer and his ties to her story. This was an action packed story and well plotted.

I liked action in this story. I liked the Christian ✝️ theme in this story. What got on my nerves about this story, as I read chapter 5 Olivia almost gets killed twice & her & Daniel are still not trying to work together to find out why 😠.

Good read, plenty of suspense. The two main characters learnt a lot from each other by the end.

This book was not one of my favorites, but I still enjoyed it over all. Ms. Black is an excellent writer, and I enjoyed some of her phrases, and interesting ways to look at situations.

What I liked: At the end of the book, I was very surprised by the person behind all the attempts to kill Olivia and Daniel. The plot was believable and had several twists and turns that kept me guessing about what would happen next.

What I didn’t like: The minor characters were somewhat predictable and uninteresting. Other things I thought odd were certain situations when the main characters acts completely out of character and with the wrong emotion for the situation. For example, at the end of the book, Olivia and Daniel climb to the attic of a house to get away from the man trying to blow them up or burn the house down under them, and instead of feeling panic as most people would feel, they sit down and chit-chat about his step-daughter and her situation. With bullets flying up through the floor toward them, Olivia thinks to herself that she “couldn’t remember ever feeling so trapped and helpless,” yet she says she “felt the most at home she’d ever been.” That I didn’t understand.

Over all, I’m giving this book four stars, because I enjoyed reading it in spite of the minor flaws I found.

From the cover: A gang of masked gunmen murder a man right in front of reporter Olivia Brant. Now they're after her—the newswoman witness who won't rest until she gets her story. She's rescued in the nick of time by a six-foot-four former bodyguard, but Olivia hardly feels safe. She's certain Daniel Ash is connected to her investigation into the dead man's business dealings, but how? With no one left to trust, Olivia accepts Daniel's offer of shelter at his abandoned country house in rural Ontario. But the killers are not far behind, and determined that Olivia takes the evidence she's uncovered to her grave.

I was surprised at the end of the book. At the beginning of this book I would not have guessed who was a major part of all the attempts to kill Olivia (the reporter). The plot was good and had some twists and turns that kept you guessing and wanting to know what happened next. Overall a very good book.

This suspense put me into a tailspin! Starts out hard and fast and just keeps picking up the pace until the no-holds-barred ending. A truly unique premise with plenty of twists and turns made this a page-turner for me. And in the midst of all the chaos, there's a sweet, albeit uncertain, romance brewing between Olivia and Daniel. A breathtaking read for the discerning romantic suspense lover.
