After losing his comrade, Sergeant Gil Hanford thought a visit to the man's widow would be the decent way to honor his late friend. But Gil found more than comfort in Kai Tiernan—he had always secretly desired beautiful Kai, but a sudden, mutual passion helped assuage their grief… until duty reared its head, removing him from her arms, seemingly forever.
Four years later, Kai is starting over at the Triple H Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Born a rancher, she is looking for a new beginning—but her new boss is unforgivably familiar. Kai has tried to move past the memory of what happened between her and Gil, even though she's never forgiven him for leaving her. But even as they begin their journey toward something new and oh-so-uncertain, a shadow emerges, determined to claim Kai for itself.
I've lived six lives in one and it all shows up in the books I write, one way or another.
I was always a risk taker and broke mustangs at thirteen years old in Oregon. I learn to break them with love, not threat or pain.
At 17 years old, I picked night-crawlers (worms) out in our Oregon orchards from 9pm to midnight, every night. I earned enough money to buy my school clothes and book. I also plunked down $600 to a flight company at the Medford, Oregon airport and asked them to teach me...a girl...to fly. I soloed in 12 hours, which is average. From that time until I left for the US Navy at 18, I had accrued 39 hours of flight time in my Cessna 150 single engine airplane.
I was in the US military and was an AG3 (weather forecaster). There was no airplane club, so I couldn't fly when I was in the Navy. But I could look at the clouds in the sky ;-).
Later, I flew in a B-52 bomber for a day and night mission (18 hours total), a T-38 Talon jet, USAF, where I was riding in a "chase plane" on a test flight in a Dragonfly jet.
I was one of the first AFLA (American Fencing League of America) women fencers to fence with epee and sabre. These weapons were closed to women because they were too 'heavy' for a female to handle. I said baloney and fought the males and won half my bouts. I was part of a surge of women fencers on the East Coast in the 1970's to push for equality in the sport. Together, we changed the sport and changed the mind of the men. Today? In the Olympics? Women now fence in foil, epee and sabre, thanks to what we did as a vanguard showing the world it could be done.
I then became a volunteer firefighter when I was a civilian once more, the first woman in an all - male fire department in West Point, Ohio for three years. I became a local expert not only in firefighting, driving the engine and tanker trunks, but also had training in hazardous material (Reynoldsburg Fire Academy, Columbus, OH).
My books always reflect what I experienced. If you like edgy, gritty, deeply and emotionally intense love stories with sympathetic heroes and heroines, check out my newest series that will be available mid-Oct. 2015, and it incorporates much of what I have lived.
I love Ms. McKenna's books. This is only the second one I've read in this series, but it was great. I really loved that the heroine had not been physically abused or raped in her past like in so many of Ms. McKenna's books.
Gil and Kai knew each other when they were in the military. She was married to his BFF, but he had always loved her. They had 5 glorious days together about a year after the husband died, but he left without goodbye and really hurt her. They work through the pain and betrayed feelings towards love.
The reason this doesn't get the other half star to get to four. There's an ongoing bad guy from previous books and that's left unresolved for the next book.
Excellent friends to lovers story. Gil and Kai became friends when Kai met and married Gil's best friend and fellow Delta Force operator Sam. After Sam's death, Gil would check in on Kai often. When his brother was killed in action, in his grief Gil went to Kai, who was still grieving for Sam. Their shared grief erupted in passion, and they had five intense days together. Then Gil disappeared without a word, leaving Kai devastated, angry and feeling used.
Four years later, Kai is out of the army and looking for work as a ranch mechanic. Hired by Talon Holt (High Country Rebel), Kai is dismayed to discover that the ranch foreman is none other than Gil. Her hurt and anger return, even as she worries that she could lose this much-needed job if she expresses it. Gil had also never forgotten those days together, and carries a tremendous amount of guilt over the way it ended.
Both Kai and Gil come to the relationship with some baggage. Kai had a miserable childhood after her mother's death, with a father who considered a woman's place to be in the home. In spite of her being able to do everything her brother did, her dad never approved of her wishes. He was also a man who never showed her any affection. When Kai decided to leave the ranch and join the army, her father disowned her. While stationed in Afghanistan, she met and married Sam, a Delta Force operator. Unfortunately for her, Sam was a man who had trouble expressing his emotions, leaving her frequently feeling drained by the love she gave, but rarely having her own needs looked after. Only her friendship with Sam's best friend Gil gave her any of the emotional sustenance she needed. After Gil's apparent desertion of her, she found it difficult to trust again.
Gil had met Kai at the same time Sam did. Unknown to either of them, Gil had also fallen in love with Kai. Being an honorable man, he was very careful never to let either of them know about his feelings. After Sam's death, Gil made a point of checking on Kai whenever he could, happy just to be able to see her. He didn't know if he'd ever be able to tell her of his feelings. His grief over his brother's death sent him running to the only person he knew who might be able to help him through it. He never expected that comfort to take the route it did. Then one morning, a call back to duty came in, with Gil having to leave immediately for an undercover assignment. He wasn't permitted to tell her anything, so he just disappeared. The assignment went for two years, and when he came back he thought it was too late to do anything about it, and never tried to get in contact with her. But he had never forgotten those days together, and seeing her again brings his feelings for her back to the surface. Discovering how devastated she'd been by his actions makes his guilt even worse.
When they met again, each reacted in accordance with their personalities. Kai has never had trouble expressing her feelings and she lets Gil know exactly how she feels about seeing him again. She worries that it could cost her her job, and she insists on keeping their personal history out of the workplace. Gil is a sensitive man, in spite of his Delta Force reputation. He knows he hurt her, and is beginning to realize just how much. He promises that their history won't affect their working relationship.
I was a bit mad at Kai at the beginning that she refused to let Gil explain what had happened. If she had let him explain right away, she might have been able to let go of her anger a bit sooner. I liked the way that Gil was smart enough to know that she had to find her way past her anger at her own rate. Once they actually talked, I could see the healing begin. Both of them realized that the attraction between them was still just as strong. Kai was very wary of giving in to it again, not sure that she could trust Gil not to disappear once more. She was afraid to risk her heart again. Gil knows that what he feels for Kai is more than just attraction, but also knows that she's not ready to hear it. I loved seeing Gil's patience as he works to earn her trust again. It was great to see his patience pay off as Kai begins to open up to him. They got to know each other on a deeper level than they had before. He was also very protective of her.
Part of that protectiveness was in reaction to the attentions of Chuck Harper. Harper has been an ongoing character in previous books, suspected of drug running and human trafficking, though there has been no proof. Both Gil and Talon know of the suspicions, and take steps to protect Kai when she has to be around him. But neither of them bothered to tell her about him, so she saw only the man he chose to show her. I liked that her renewed relationship with Gil made her pull back from further contact with Harper. That pulling back caused Harper to get more intense in his pursuit, and Kai began to sense trouble. When Kai and Gil were attacked one morning on their way to the ranch, the danger they were in was intense and life threatening. I loved seeing Gil's skills as an operator make the difference. It was especially awesome to see how he used those skills to make a point later. It left a bit of a cliffhanger, as the drug and trafficking storyline continues into the next book.
I loved seeing Kai and Gil finally get their feelings out in the open. It was pretty sweet to see Gil's vulnerability as he did so, and Kai's shock at his revelations. I liked seeing them continue to take the time to make sure that their feelings are real and lasting. The epilogue was awesome, with the added twist of a surprise involving two other characters.
I liked seeing Talon and Cat again, and catching up with how things are going on the ranch. I loved the fact that Talon makes a point of hiring veterans to work with him. The camaraderie among Talon, Gil and Cass is awesome. The fact that all three are former special forces makes their bond even stronger. It was fun to see how they would tease each other, but they could also be deadly serious when necessary. I also loved seeing Talon's combat dog Zeke again, and the introduction of a puppy into the family.
There's not too much about NIGHT HAWK that I enjoyed, from the terrible plot to the clichéd characters to the head scratching climax, this lengthy book didn't do a thing for me.
Former Army helicopter repair woman Kai Tiernan has been all over looking for ranch work, but she's struck out every single time. Her luck is finally turning around when she's hired by the Triple H Ranch in Wyoming, but her joy is short lived when she finds out her former lover and her dead husband's best friend Gil Hanford is the foreman. The Triple H Ranch is known to hire special forces vets, but he's the last person she expected to encounter here! Time didn't prepare her to see the man she spent a delicious week with, who then walked out on her and never looked back, taking her heart with him.
Gil is stunned stupid when Kai walked into the Triple H Ranch. He knows he did her wrong all those years ago, as evidenced by the grudge she's clearly still carrying. Gil has been in love with Kai since the moment he saw her, can he convince her to give them a second chance?
NIGHT HAWK is the 10th book in the Jackson Hole series and the first I've read. The first thing I noticed is that the writing seemed very forced and clipped, with a lot of gratuitous exclamation points!!!! I really couldn't get into this book, there was something about the tone and writing that simply didn't do it for me. Plus it was sooooo long. I wound up skimming through sections hoping to find some of the implied excitement, instead all I found was the same scenarios repeated incessantly.
Kai was so annoying. Bursting into tears whenever Gil was near, wondering over and over and OVER and OVER why he left her. Jeesh lady, pull your big girl panties up and move the hell on. Your encounter was years ago, let the fury go, for crying out loud! Gil was an idiot. Why couldn't he tell her his feelings now? It made zero sense to me. And the supposed danger element fell absolutely flat, and the bad dude's revelations at the end made me groan in irritation. Nothing about this book was engaging whatsoever. It was a repetitive, yawn-inducing 384 pages that could've been streamlined into 150, but even then I wouldn't recommend it.
Bottom Line: Unless you have a fondness for hundreds of pages worth of mundane, eye-rolling repetitiveness, skip this one. There are so many cowboy/black ops romantic suspense books out there that pack the punch that this book lacked. Hit me up if you want some recommendations. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...
I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review and here it is. 4.5 stars
Kai Tiernan is a former Army mechanic who had to leave the military due to downsizing, and whose husband, Sam, a Delta Force operative, lost his life 5 years ago. When we first meet Kai, she's trying desperately to find a job as a ranch mechanic and wrangler, when she applies for a job at the Circle H ranch, and is surprised to find that Talon Holt, who interviews her, was also an operative, as are several others in his employ, but the biggest surprise is that his ranch foreman is Gil Hanford, her late husband's best friend, and he's the last person she wants to see again. Four years earlier and just one year after Kai was widowed, she and Gil spent five amazing days together after Gil turned up at her door, devastated by the loss of his only brother, after which Gil disappeared from her life and was never heard from again, breaking her heart and leaving Kai feeling used, taken advantage of and angry.
I began reading novels by this author several decades ago and what Ms. McKenna excels at is creating compelling and complex characters, and this novel is a perfect example of that ability. Both Kai and Gil have lots of baggage, and a lot of issues to resolve, and as Ms. McKenna carefully explores their pasts, their motivations, and their feelings for one another, she simultaneously adds even more suspense as an attempt is made on their lives.
This is a well-written and well-crafted novel, and, as the tenth novel in her Jackson Hole series, it can be read as a standalone, although there's a bit of a cliffhanger ending, which is why I gave this novel 4.5 stars rather than 5 stars, but don't let that stop you--this is one of Ms. McKenna's best novels to date, and it kept me reading until 5:30 a.m.--I simply couldn't put it down.
This story has a compelling premises, the widow of a former best friend, whom Gil has always liked, comfort him, after Gil's brother dies in combat. The always buried feelings burst into life, and Gil and Kai spend five magical days together, loving, laughing, and healing. Until the war, and life sets them apart, until they meet again, four years later, working at the same ranch. I love that the ranch employs veterans, the camaraderie, family like atmosphere, is uniting and healing. The characters have charisma, are easy to like, and relate to. The secondary love story going on the background was sweet, and brought lots of joy to the family of heart at the ranch. The story even has a little suspense element in it, where life is in danger, and possibilities of great peril at hand. This suspense was not brought to a conclusion, but left sort of an open ended. I read a book usually, if not on one sitting, then on two, and most likely within 24 hours. So if a story has a lot repetition, same inner thoughts going through a person's mind again and again, same conversation had between two people again, the recurrence gets boring to me. I notice these things easily, and if it starts to happen a lot in a same story, I lose interest. That happened here, unfortunately. I felt that there was too much repeat of the same. Of course, if you read a book over a month's time, with thirty minutes here and there, this might be a great reminder of the events for a reader, but I felt after the half point, that the story wasn't offering that much new for me anymore. But regardless, the dynamics of the relationship between Gil and Kai were alluring, the development of their feelings towards each other captivating, the passion between them was believable, and the protective strike Gil had towards her intimidating. A charming story indeed ~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Night Hawk is a very special story about two extraordinary people. Ms. McKenna understands the human psyche and beautifully brings you into the world of her characters, in a seemingly effortless manner. I could not put this book down!
She has crafted a poignant story about Gil Hanford, a Delta Force Sergeant, who served in Afghanistan with Sam Morrison, a fellow operative and Gil's best friend. Sam is married to Kai Tiernan, a U.S. Army Apache Combat Helicopter Mechanic. Gil loved Kai at first sight, but kept his feelings secret out of respect for Sam and Kai. When Sam is killed in a firefight, their lives change in ways neither of them could possibly foresee.
Gil finds himself, a year after Sam's death, needing Kai's friendship in order to cope with the loss of his brother. Unlike Sam, who kept his emotions locked up tight, which was a bone of contention between them all, Gil is not afraid to be vulnerable, to show his misery and emotional devastation. When their grief is laced with loving feelings over 5 days, they succumb to passion beyond their wildest dreams. Unfortunately, Gil is called away on a special undercover assignment, with no way to let Kai know in advance.
Without giving away any more of their remarkable adventure, let's just say that you'll love the ride, when they meet up again 4 years later. Ms. McKenna knows just which hot buttons to push and I always feel better for the heat. Kudos, again! I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
This is Lindsay McKenna’s 10th book of in her wonderful, heartwarming Wyoming Series. It was delightful to revisit characters from the past and observe how they interact with the latest characters added to the mix. Above all else, love and family, whether by blood or by choice, are what sustains these human spirits and well being.
Here is the story of Gil Hanford, a former Delta Force sergeant and Kai Tiernan, a former US Army Apache combat helicopter mechanic. They share an intense and complicated history having been introduced while Kai met and married Gil’s military brother Sam. They clung to one another for comfort after Sam’s death in a fire fight. After 5 glorious days they are unexpectedly and abruptly separated. Gil’s assigned to an undercover mission of undetermined length. Kai’s left behind having lost her husband and then her support system, Gil.
Fast forward 4 agonizing years and fate intervenes so that Gil and Kai wind up working at the same Triple H Ranch. They are wary of one another, but with painstaking patience and time they eventually agree to start fresh - the past is over. Gil re-earns Kai’s trust when he lets down his Black Ops ‘Game Face’. He becomes vulnerable and open which allows Kai to be brazen and spontaneous. They honestly share their hearts and emotions with one another.
Ultimately Gil and Kai turn a page and start a new chapter of their lives. They’ve discovered a silent, unspoken love that has held them together all along. Moving beyond their challenges they’ll share a bright future together.
Gil and Kia had a steamy session of five days when Gil disappeared Kia was left distrustful, with no trace of what happened to Gil. Its been a while since then and she is looking for a job. Its just her luck that the one place willing to hire her as a mechanic and Gil is one of the main people there. Its then that she realized she never gotten over what happened in the past with him and Gil will try to gain her trust once more.
I liked this book. It took me a couple shots to actually pick up the book and read it through. Once I did I was hooked. My thing was that there was many times the book dragged for me. Too much fluff that didn't do much and could've been left without. Then there was that drama with that (bad) guy. (Sorry his name was promptly forgotten didn't hear much of him) With the stuff they were talking about him on why he was said bad guy I thought that there would've been more drama and trouble. It wasn't till towards the ending of the book that he actually does something and when something does happen it was rushed though. I did love watching Kia slowly but surely breakdown her walls to let Gil in with each loving gesture to get her to trust him. On and I loved that ending oh her birthday. I would really love to know more about Cass and Sandy's story. Overall this book was good I liked it.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story of Kai and Gil. As her deceased husbands ex-best friend and comrade, they shared a passionate week together before he ghosted on her (or so she thought). This sets up the story and tension between the two. That sense of past betrayal and hidden feelings along with shared grief is a solid start, and it makes the love story sizzle. I couldn’t put this book down with the anticipation.
I found Kai and Gil to both be well written characters and their dynamics worked well together. The classic western man, rugged and masculine, paired with the stubborn, caring, and hardworking woman. McKenna also did a great job of rounding out the story with extra characters around the ranch without taking away too much time from the main couple. This added some depth and kept things interesting.
As for the reason this didn’t get 5 stars, her writing did become lengthy at some points, mainly towards the end of the novel. It kind of kept knocking me over the head with drawn out exclamations of thoughts that were already apparent enough through dialogue and action. I tended to skim these parts as it was pages of just rambling thoughts.
I also enjoyed the introduction of a “villain” in the story, to show some jealousy and create some added suspense but this could’ve been delved into more. It seemed to be briefly touched upon and then suddenly became a huge problem at the end to create a climax.
All in all, this was a classic romance for me and I am happy I picked it off the shelf. This was my first time reading any book in this series and I will be going back for more!
Down from 2 to 1 star after yet another chapter about getting a new puppy & will Zeke, the war dog, kill it? I like this author; this is my 1st in this series. Unfortunately, not a great beginning for me. This book is too long; the plot isn't strong enough for all the endless angst, tears, broken heart, side stories, etc. There isn't any suspense or action. If the bad guy is being watched by the FBI, don't you think these guys should have shared that with Kai especially since she is using his machine shop! Book needed a tighter focus on Gil and Kai, instead of the side stories about other characters. Gosh, Gil, grow a pair and tell her how you feel!
Night Hawk is a combination of several themes that I have come to enjoy recently. It’s a small town/contemporary western romance, with two strong ex-military protagonists. And it has just a touch of romantic suspense thrown in.
Also, this particular story in McKenna’s Jackson Hole series is a second-chance-at-love story, and I’m always a sucker for one of those.
However, this is book 10 in an ongoing series, and I’ll confess to not having read any of the preceding books. I picked it up because I read and enjoyed some of McKenna’s romantic suspense in the past, and this looked good. While I know that I missed some nuances among the continuing characters by not having read the rest of the series, this was still a good place to start. Both of the main characters in the book are also new to the series, the ranch and the area. Our hero, Gil Hanford, has only been at Triple H a few months, and heroine Kai Tiernan comes to the ranch as a new mechanic and wrangler.
There was one part of the story where I think my previous unfamiliarity made a difference, and I’ll get back to that after the rating. But for the most part, as we are mostly following Kai’s perspective in this story, as people, places and things are introduced to her, they are introduced to any new readers to the series.
When Kai meets foreman Gil Hanford at the Triple H, it is far from their first meeting. And there lies the romantic and sexual tension in the story, as well as most of the arguments, hurt feelings and distrust.
Like many of the men who have come to work at the Triple H, Gil isn’t merely ex-military, he’s ex-Special Forces. And so was Kai’s late husband Sam. Gil and Sam were in the same unit, and Gil was the one to comfort Kai when Sam was killed in action. Kai was also stationed at Baghram, she was one of the mechanics who fixed vehicles on base for all the units stationed there, including the Special Forces Teams.
As long as Sam was alive, Gil and Kai were never anything more than friends. Gil may have been just as much in love with Kai as his buddy was, but he never let it show. At least not until five memorable days and glorious nights, a year after Sam was killed, when Gil’s brother Rob was also KIA. Gil and Kai shared something special, something that was more than just sex, but still contained a whole lot of heat between the sheets.
On the final morning, Gil disappeared, and Kai felt used. Who wouldn’t? But now they are both out of the service and the small world of western ranches has brought them both to the same place at the same time. With a chance for all the explanations that Gil never gave. And a chance for the wounds to heal so that they can discover if what they had was real, and if it can last.
At least until they discover that someone out there has both of them in his sights, and he’s aiming to kill.
Escape Rating B: First of all, I really loved the atmosphere of the Triple H Ranch. It just seems like a really great place with terrific people. The owner, Talon Holt, is himself ex-Special Forces, and he has a track record of hiring his fellow veterans. He is also struggling, trying to bring his family’s ranch back to profitability after years of neglect. In addition to caring for his mother, who is battling cancer, Talon has also kept his military dog, Zeke, a Belgian Malinois with a grip like steel and a heart of gold.
The Triple H is a place where anyone would be proud and happy to work, and it makes a great setting.
I also enjoyed that this story has a secondary romance between Talon’s mother Sandy and their combination cook and accountant, Cass. Just because Sandy has had some tough knocks in her life, doesn’t mean she isn’t ready to try again, as long as it’s the right man. Cass and Sandy’s love story was sweet and made a nice counterpoint to the sometimes angry hot and sometimes smokin’ hot romance between Gil and Kai.
While there were reasons for Gil’s abandonment of Kai way back when, he did compound the issue by staying away after his duties were done. That his abrupt departure all too closely resembled Kai’s father’s treatment of her created some really deep wounds. They have a lot of trust to recover before they had a chance at happiness, and the author worked through that in the story.
However, the suspense angle of the story hit this reader new to the series as a bit out of left field. It also included an unfortunate misunderstandammit. Everyone in town seems to know that Chuck Harper is a villain. But everyone equally protects Kai from learning that Harper has a history of becoming obsessed with women and making them disappear when they reject him. They all think that just informing Kai that Harper is under investigation for drug trafficking will be enough to keep her away from the dude. At the same time, Harper is courting Kai by offering the services of his ace machine shop at bargain rates, and Kai, and the Triple H, need access to prime tools to keep their old farm equipment operational. The reader sees trouble coming miles away, because Kai doesn’t have the information to evaluate the true threat.
I also think that Harper’s dirty deeds have roots in earlier stories that I haven’t read. So his part of this plot loomed much more annoying than large because of my and Kai’s lack of information.
I still really enjoyed Kai and Gil’s story, and I’ll be happy to take another trip out to the Triple H.
I love read Lindsay's stories. She brings to life what struggles a veteran goes thru. Meeting Gil and Kia was great for there story was interrupted 5 years before. I like the way she builds the story and draws you into it. There are great plot twists in it that have you guessing as to what is happening next. Its great to see Talon and Cat again happy and content. Plus the other cameos that are in the story. She is a great story teller and I look forward to her next book I find.
If I could give her a rating of 10 I'd gladly do it. This has been a tough month so far. My pacemaker needed a new lead wire changed out, that wasn't so bad, but 6 days later I had an Arterial embolism in my upper right arm and now that's okay too. But this book I had to keep putting it down and then I'd reread what I had already read. But it's really a good love story. I hope you read it!
I honestly thought I had read the series out of order. A bad guy that had died in the previous book is back to cause issues in this book? This whole series has issues with consistency. It seems she wrote these so quickly she didn't go back and check what had already happened, or what had already been written. Timelines don't add up, and stories don't always align. It's frustrating.
I received a complimentary book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I am a longtime Lindsay McKenna fan. When this author writes about military pilots, she is speaking from experience. Since she was a pilot in the Navy, she personally understands the military women’s feelings and experience. In Ms. McKenna’s novels, the women are all independent and hard-working and can work and fly as well as any man. Yet, she still has a woman’s feeling when it comes to love and romance. The hero is often kind and tender, yet he and accepts the heroine as a strong, independent person. I also enjoy that, in spite of her tough side, the hero also treats the heroine as a women who deserves to be loved and spoiled.
This is certainly very true in this book, Night Hawk. Kai, the heroine, not only was in the military but she is also a mechanic that can fix almost everything. She does a fantastic job with the old farm equipment on the farm. At the same time, she rides the fences to check for any problems that need to be taken care of. .
Kai is a widow who had a special relationship with Gil (her late husband’s best friend). It ended badly, and she is extremely upset to find out that he is the foreman on this form. I do not want to spoil a great story, but Kai is not shy about speaking her mind to Gil or to anyone else who gives her a hard time. So the meeting between Gil and Kai turns out to be very interesting!
There is also a problem where someone is working behind Kai and Gil’s back trying to cause trouble for them. Of course, the best part for me is that Kai and Gil fall in love. Gil does not expect Kai to change in any way; he loves her the way she is. This is true in all of this author’s books.
However, I must admit that my favorite characters in this book are Cass and Sandy. In a humorous role reversal, Cass, who also was in the military, wears an apron and cooks for the entire farm. Sandy, the mother of the farm owner, has been very ill. Cass takes cares for her and nurtures her so she will heal faster as he works to get her to eat and put on weight.
This is the tenth book in Lindsay McKenna’s Wyoming series. However, if you haven’t read the first nine, you would have no problem following with this story. This story could very easily be a stand-alone.
If you like strong and independent women and the tender, loving men who love them, I highly recommend Night Hawk.
Night Hawk is the 10th book in the Jackson Hole series, but it's the first book that I have read. A good sign of a successful series is when they say a book can be read as a stand alone, they really mean it. I like that I can pick up any book in the series and never feel lost. While references were made to previous books, I never felt out of the loop reading Night Hawk. It is a good second chance story. By coincidence, Gil and Kai end up working at the same ranch, years after Gil left Kai without a word. Now that they are together, can Kai find forgiveness and a happy future?
For the most part, I enjoyed the story, I think had it been a straight romance, I would have liked it a lot more. I loved watching Gil and Kai find their way back to each other. I also liked the peripheral characters in the book. There was a real sense of family among them that came across as genuine.
As for the suspense part of the book, for me, it was almost like an after thought and really could have been left out. Not enough time was spent on the "suspense" part. the attack toward the end of the book was a bit out of the blue. I was also confused as to why Gil and Talon wouldn't tell Kai the real reasons for them wanting her to stay away from the bad guy. If they truly thought she was in danger, why keep it to themselves? That was just silly. I also thought that there was a little too much repetition in the book. How many times did the characters have to speculate on whether or not Sandy and Cass were falling in love? I would have like to see more of that fall into love instead of hearing about it.
Night Hawk is the 10th installment in Lindsay McKenna's Wyoming series. This book can be read as a stand alone be you will visit characters from previous installments in the series so there is a chance of spoilers.
Kai Tiernan, a former US Army helicopter mechanic and Gil Hanford, a former Delta Force Sergeant. Kai was married to Sam Morrison, a military brother of Gil's and his best friend. Gil has had strong feelings for Kai for years but never acted on those feeling because of Sam. After tragedy strikes and Sam is killed in combat, Gil and Kai find themselves trying to ease the pain in each others arms. Before these two have a chance to grieve and really connect Gil is called out on a mission without getting a chance to let Kai know where and what was going on.
Kai is hurt and feels betrayed when she finds Sam left without a word. Now, 4 years later these two find themselves working together at the Triple H Ranch in Wyoming. While there are feelings or hurt and betrayal between the two the slowly find themselves learning to forgive and to trust one another again.
This is a heartbreaking beautiful story about love, loss and learning to live again. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher for my honest review and opinion. All ratings and opinions stated are my own.
Good plot, likable characters. Some new ones and plenty of older ones from previous books. Lots of drama, mystery and romance. A couple of love scenes that I skimmed over.
Kai Tiernan is a mechanic and wrangler. She has been looking for a ranch job but no one wants to hire a female for the job. Kai is a widow and she is a vet. She wants to find a home.
Gil Hanford was in special force. He is now the forman of a Triple H ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He knew Kai in the military in fact they were lovers for five days in Afghanistan. Before he left her and never saw her again. Kai used to be married to his best friend.
The Triple H ranch has been let go for the past 9 years. Now they are working to get it back in shape. They want to hire a bunch of vets to work their.
No one knows that Kai and Gil knew each other before. Kai was hurt by Gil.
I liked seeing them working together to bring back the ranch. The characters work together really well.
The setting is a ranch by Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
I was given this ebook to read by NetGalley and Harlequin for free. In return I agreed to give a honest review.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This story is about Gil Hanford and Kai Morrison. Gil was the best friend and comrade in arms to Kai’s late husband, Sam, and was friends with both Sam and Kai for years. There’s an entire story here so I won’t recap but life moves ahead a few years and Kai and Gil have been estranged during that time but meet up once again at the Triple H Ranch. This is quite a group of characters as most of the folks living and working on this ranch have also been in the service. The men are all former operators/special forces and Ms. McKenna writes them with very distinct personalities. It is really fun and deep and intriguing to read how they work together and live their lives. The women at the ranch are also strong characters and the relationships between the women, and with their significant others, are fun to read as well. And Ms. McKenna writes about a former armed services dog, and a new puppy, that offers a lighter side story that I enjoyed. I won’t give any spoilers but I SO loved the way Gil solves a huge problem. Cracked me up and had me saying, “Yes!” out loud. Good story to enjoy after the holidays!
Being so engrossed in Ms. McKenna's DELOS world, it's nice to go back to what I consider classic Lindsay McKenna. She still has her military ties, true, but it's a more 'regular' world we deal with in NIGHT HAWK. This book takes a spin on friends, but also on wife-of-friend. Kai and Gil have been friends for many years, but more than that, she was married to his best friend. After his death, these two learn to grieve both together and separately.
Like most (if not close to all) of her tales, this story was beautifully crafted, with enough heartbreak woven into the tale of trust and forgiveness. Definitely one of my favorite tales of Ms. McKenna's.

McKenna writes strong characters who show us the real struggles in their lives and who demonstrate real emotion. Night Hawk is no exception. Kai is recently severed from the military and begins work at a ranch that previous readers will recognize. She quickly realized that Gil works there too, whom she hasn't seen in 4 years. The story is about learning to forgive, to trust, and to love.
I really liked this story and give it 4 stars. There was a little too much of the same type of mentally examining their feelings in the exact same way for me to say it was a perfect five. However, this is one of those stories you won't want to leave.
"McKenna brings us a tender, vulnerable story with two emotionally wounded ex-military characters at its center. Set in beautiful Wyoming, McKenna’s heartfelt story seamlessly blends the past with the present. Her battled-tested characters will have readers invested and turning the pages. Fans of McKenna will not be disappointed in her latest passion-infused love story" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).

I really do enjoy this author's work. Though this one kind of fell flat for me. It had a lot of repetitiveness to it. I did like the characters, but I had a hard time staying interested in the story. Gil and Kia have known each other for a long time. When tragedy strikes Gil turns to Kia and then disappears for 5 years. After they reconnect, it's a struggle for both of them to be honest about what they are feeling. Can these two make it?
Gil Hanford had been in love with Kai Tiernan since his first sight of her. But she married his best friend and a friend is all he would be for her. Now Kai is widowed and working on the same ranch as Gil. He still has feelings for her but how does she feel about him? Both have to let go of the past to get on with the future.
Although a good story, there was a lot of repetition. Too much talk by Gil of him blaming himself. He loved her so why did it take so long for him to tell her? She loved him so why not tell him?
