“I don’t want you to go,” he whispers back, and I tuck him into my arms. “Not even to grab our food. I can’t stand the thought of not touching you right now.”
■ Yeah,” I say, pressing my face into his hair and breathing him in despite the pain. “My Xen. My peace.”
He cries harder as I scoop him into my arms. (Bash)
■ “Xeni!” he gasps, barking a startled laugh as he shoves at my chest.🫠
The shy innocence in his wide eyes takes me back in time, dragging me straight to the old Bash.
I can’t help it as I scoop him into another hug, burying my face in his neck just to feel him shiver. “Gods, I missed making you blush like that,” I tease. (Xeni)
■ “Then trust that you’ll always be perfect to me, Xen. Let me see you.” (Bash)
■ My hair falls around us like a veil from the rest of the world, shielding this moment for us. He’s beautiful underneath me. (Xeni)
■ “You know you’re a big guy, right?” he asks, his breath strained. “You act like a lapdog, but you are not small, princess.”
I twist to face him and toss him a wink. “Aw, don’t worry. You handle how big I am just fine, darling.” (Xeni)
“Ours was the kind of love you read about in sonnets and old books. It was the all-consuming sort that poets chase and cynics dismiss.”
“Sleep had been my only refuge, the one place I could pretend he was still beside me. The only time I didn’t want to die.”
“‘My whole life, I’ve been a pawn,’ he says into the suffocating silence. ‘A piece in someone else’s game. I’m… used to being used, Bash.’”
“It doesn’t matter how much time went by, Xen. I never stopped loving you. How could I, when you’re carrying the other half of my heart?”
