The Cortisol Cure: The Secret to Resetting Your Stress Response, Boosting Energy & Feeling Better Than Ever

A groundbreaking book from the “Stress Reset Expert" reveals that contrary to popular belief, cortisol isn’t the enemy―it’s an essential hormone your body depends on to function, heal, and thrive, and the key to reclaiming your health is restoring your natural supply. For fans of Good Energy and Age Like a Girl . Our relationship to cortisol, the stress hormone, is often misconstrued. We believe cortisol is bad―something we want to lower and keep at bay. But here’s the the migraines, bloating, mood swings, weight gain, and joint pain may not stem from too much cortisol at all. More often, they arise when your body’s cortisol levels are depleted. When you learn how your system really interacts with this vital hormone, you create the conditions for your body to repair, rebalance, and reset. In The Cortisol Cure, Dr. Erin Kinney introduces her powerful and accessible the “Cortisol Bank Account.” Think of cortisol as the “currency” your body uses to generate energy, handle stress, heal, and perform at its best. When you rest, you earn cortisol. When stress demands your attention―physical, emotional or environmental ―you spend it. And just like with any budget, when you consistently spend more than you earn, you slip into hormonal debt. This debt sends your body into survival mode and can manifest as a wide range of symptoms that feel mysterious or disconnected. This book maps the journey Dr. Kinney has used to help over 7,000 patients and clients heal their body, health, and life. You Understand what you want for your body―you’ll learn how to balance your relationship with cortisol in each area of your life. Read real patient stories that illustrate the science in clear, relatable, and empowering ways. Learn habits that you can put into practice―and that will stick for the long term.

The Cortisol Cure is a wake-up call and action plan for anyone who doesn’t feel well and isn’t sure why, but needs to feel better. If you're human and you want to be well―this book is for you.

The Cortisol Cure: The Secret to Resetting Your Stress Response, Boosting Energy & Feeling Better Than Ever by Dr. Erin Kinney, well you had me at that title. Who doesn't want to feel better than ever in mid-life.
I have all the "symptoms" that lead back to check your cortisol so obviously requesting this book was a no brainer. The book is split up into symptoms, advice and real person accounts of various reasons to feeling unwell. Limit our stress, think deeper about weight gain, choosing healthy eating habits are all ways we can replenish cortisol, unfortunately there is no pill or easy fix to cortisol. There are several takeaways that I found helpful, such as Dr. Kinney's noticing approach to our health, since normally we look at physical health-not our whole self. Noticing what we are eating, what feelings we may be suppressing and what stressors keep our mind racing are all helpful to adjusting our physical health as well. This is a book that you will want to pick up just to understand what may be happening in your body, Dr. Kinney references all ages and both male and female, real life situations.

Grab a copy Sep 22, you will come away with a better understanding on resetting your full body, in order to regulate cortisol and as the title states, "Feel Better Than Ever".

Thank you to the publisher for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Cortisol Cure is life changing and soul healing.

Dr. Erin Kinney is not only a professional in this field, but a patient. She's studied, lived, and seen the fruit of her education and practices for years through her own experiences and the lives of countless patients. Before reading this book, I had no idea how imperative a healthy, stable cortisol level was for so many aspects and functions in the human body!

As a former long-Covid patient with kidney damage and most of the symptoms in the introduction, I am so thankful I read this book. Without specifying my score, it's safe to say I absolutely need this book and will be buying copies for my family and girlfriends. For years we have been told by medical professionals that our bodily questions, suffering, missing joy, and lack of energy is just part of life. The Cortisol Cure gives us hope, information, and a solid starting point where we can immediately begin our healing journey. I didn't even know my brain could feel safe and turn off!

Thanks to Dr. Kinney, I now have a list of actions I can change and a second list of habits to start incorporating after this initial reset. Some techniques are so easy I can do them anywhere, at any time, with zero fanfare or publicity. Others will take more emotional work for me- setting boundaries, gah! I can't wait to see what helps, what doesn't fit in this season of life, and what I can start stacking (tea, no phone, and a book? Yes please!).

Some of these tips are common sense, but others I have never even considered. For example, I knew my body thrived on vegetables and protein, but I had no idea it was because of my blood type! These incredible insights, coupled with the proven testimonials and examples in every chapter, really encouraged me that positive change is possible, my body is not irrevocably broken, and I can help myself start healing today!

I'm considering these next two weeks to be a cortisol bootcamp where I rethink and journal all of my normal habits and bodily responses, then try to implement and replace one at a time with the suggested better habits and nourishment advice! I am so thankful to finally have information that isn't just prescription drugs or another referral to a specialist- can't wait to see results!

Thank you to Dr. Kinney, Grand Central Publishing, and NetGalley for this ARC!

I found The Cortisol Cure to be such a fascinating and thought-provoking read! I've struggled with stress for a long time - I work in a profession where burnout is incredibly common. Between the mental load of constantly juggling responsibilities, and feeling like there's always something else that needs to get done, I've become increasingly interested in understanding what prolonged stress actually does to our bodies.

One of my biggest takeaways was Dr. Kinney's concept of the “Cortisol Bank Account.” I loved the analogy of thinking about stress as something that makes withdrawals from our body's resources, while rest and recovery help us replenish them. It made me think about how often I push through busy weeks without giving myself enough time to recharge, especially during high-expectation times of the year. I also found it interesting that the book challenges the popular narrative that cortisol is always the enemy. We're constantly hearing about ways to lower cortisol, but I appreciated learning more about why this hormone is essential and how complicated our relationship with stress really is.

I especially enjoyed the connections the book made between stress and things like fatigue, sleep, mood, and weight. These are all areas that can be affected by so many different factors, and I appreciated having another perspective to consider. The patient stories and practical suggestions also made the material feel approachable rather than overly scientific or intimidating.

What I loved most is that this book made me reflect on my own life. I'm definitely guilty of feeling like I need to be productive all the time, and it was a good reminder that rest isn't something I should have to earn. I finished with several ideas I want to try, particularly around being more intentional with recovery and recognizing when I'm stretching myself too thin. Whether or not every claim in the book is supported by the broader research, it gave me a lot to think about, and I always appreciate a wellness book that encourages me to examine my habits and take better care of myself!

This was such a helpful and informative read! Even though I consider myself fairly well-versed when it comes to adrenal health and the effects of chronic stress, I still learned quite a bit from this book. I especially think this would be an incredible resource for people who have been feeling unwell but have no idea where to start.

In today's world, it feels like so many people are running on empty and dealing with stress levels that are taking a serious toll on their health. As someone who has personally struggled with low adrenal function and worked hard to improve it, I really appreciated Dr. Kinney shining a light on an issue that affects so many people.

One thing I loved was that she addressed something that can be incredibly frustrating: being told to simply "lower your stress" without any explanation of what that actually means or how to do it. Dr. Kinney takes the time to explain not only how stress impacts the body, but also what signs to look for and which health markers matter. I appreciated her holistic, whole body approach and how she focused on practical, sustainable changes rather than quick fixes.

The information was detailed without being overwhelming, and everything was presented in a way that was easy to understand. If you're brand new to learning about cortisol, adrenal health, or the effects of chronic stress, this is a fantastic place to start. Highly recommend!

This was a surprisingly helpful book. I had always thought of cortisol as a bad thing because it’s “the stress hormone,” but never realized that it helps the body through stress and when it’s depleted we run on adrenaline and rob other hormones to function (poorly).

Kinney dedicates chapters to how a lack of enough cortisol affects mood, weight, energy, pain, sex drive, immune function, digestion and more. Each section starts with an example of a patient with the issue and how it was resolved, talks about symptoms and reasons for the problem, and then details tests to run and steps to take to fix it. These generally include lifestyle changes, self care strategies, dietary advice and sometimes supplements or (rarely) medication.

The chapters could feel repetitive at times, but only because it is often similar advice for the problems. I also would have preferred fewer case studies and stories, but the book probably would have felt even more repetitive otherwise. It’s also always discouraging for me when medical books recommend dozens of expensive tests that most doctors and insurance companies won’t approve. I get that they are helpful and her patients benefit from them, but it is a privilege that is out of reach for many of us.

I came away from the book with a lot of actionable, easy but important steps to take though. I appreciated her supportive tone and her reminders of the importance of real rest and making small changes to really support our bodies. Well recommended.

The stress hormone, cortisol, is receiving a lot of attention recently. In this book, a physician delves into its impact on our functioning and provides practical advice on developing a plan to improve both physical and mental well-being. The book uses patient histories to illustrate effective strategies for managing cortisol issues.

I appreciated the book’s organized approach, categorizing specific topics such as sleep, weight, and digestion. For those who benefit from reading about other people’s experiences, there are numerous examples. Personally, I would have preferred a more concise and direct approach.

To truly benefit from the recommendations, lab work is recommended, as are a variety of supplements. There is a lot of repetition, but if the reader uses this book just by chapter headings (conditions of interest), that repetition is necessary.

There are some helpful tips and takeaways here. The extensive information provided makes repeated readings, note-taking, and underlining highly recommended.

I’ve read and listened to The Cortisol Cure, and I’m really glad I have both the hardcover and audiobook. My husband and I recently listened on the way to and from a day trip, and we kept pausing to talk about things that were clicking for us.

As someone who has dealt with some of the health issues Dr. Kinney talks about and has already been working on nervous system regulation, I had so many “ohhh…that makes sense” moments. I knew a lot of these things individually, but seeing the connections between cortisol, chronic stress, mood, sleep, nutrition, gut health, hormones, emotions, and the nervous system helped even more pieces of the puzzle come together.

I love that she doesn’t just tell you what could be going on, she gives you things you can actually do with the information. So many of the suggestions are small, realistic things I can incorporate into what I’m already doing. And I love how open she is about her own experiences. It feels much more like “I’ve been here too” than someone lecturing you about how to fix yourself.

This one is definitely going on the shelf with my other bookmarked, highlighted, written-in, and frequently referenced books. I have a feeling I’ll be pulling it back out for a long time.

I learned a lot from The Cortisol Cure. Dr Kinney made the topic accessible and the book was easy to follow. I felt it was more aimed towards millennials and issues to their current stage of life, but there was still enough general information to give me applicable tips and suggestions. It was interesting to me to think about how everything is connected and that even if you get most things right, it doesn’t take much to move the needle. And maybe sometimes you might not be doing anything “wrong” and it’s a matter of looking at your hormones or medication list to discover what’s causing underlying issues. Definitely recommend!

This is a great resource for any dealing with cortisol issues, which quite frankly applies to the vast majority of people these days.

Dr. Kinney discusses various aspects and root causes to cortisol imbalance, and offers clear direction on how to address each one. One thing I like is she briefly recaps regularly in list format what causes and steps she’s elaborating on, and for my brain fog and attention span I found this to be an asset. I appreciated that she wasn’t overly wordy and didn’t get bogged down in all the minutiae either.

This book was so informative! I learned so much about cortisol, stress, healing and it made a lot of sense. There was a lot of information, but Dr. Kinney did a wonderful job of splitting topics up and explaining the science behind it without getting too technical with the language. There are lots of tips and different things to try. I will definitely be re-reading this and taking notes. Highly recommend!
