“Zero Lives Remaining” by Adam Cesare is one of those must-read horror books if you grew up loving trips to your local arcade. This book started off with a bang as the crazy killer prologue set the tone for all the gaming horror that awaited.
Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading:
- Racism
- Violence against animals (cats)
- Bullying
- Violence against women
- Self-harm
- Suicide
If any of these trigger you, please do not read this book. Moving along, I’ve been a gamer for all my life. Ever since I got the original Nintendo Entertainment System as a birthday gift when I turned five, I’ve been forever hooked. As I got older, I enjoyed many trips to my local arcade.
To this day, I still have many fond memories of playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, and countless other arcade games. Just like in this book, playing with friends was always a lot of fun, especially at the arcades with pizza, soda, and popcorn.
Cesare captured this nostalgia perfectly, and now, in my mid-40s, I resonated so much with “Zero Lives Remaining.” He did a great job writing what would happen if things went horribly wrong at your local arcade. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this was a solid read that had all kinds of memorable characters, arcade nostalgia with games like Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man, and some of the most disturbing horror I’ve ever read.
Plus, Cesare crafts a character in Chris Murphy that I truly, deeply despised. His writing makes Murphy so insufferable that you’ll hate him from the second he walks onto the page.
This book had several plot twists that were both creative and horrific. There’s a ton of excellent gore and brutality on top of everything that transpires at the Funcave Arcade. My only complaint was that some parts dragged on a bit, but besides that, I made many weird faces while reading because the horror here is top-notch. Especially the climactic race to the end.
Once I got to the ending, it was good, and I was satisfied. I was hoping for more, maybe one final epic plot twist, but it was fine. There’s a lot of good suspense built up from the 80% mark on, and that was fun to ultimately see what would happen.
I give “Zero Lives Remaining” by Adam Cesare a 4-Star rating out of 5. The arcade nostalgia with the horror twist makes this a fun read for the most part. If you’re also a gamer who loves horror, you will undoubtedly love this book. I enjoyed all the bloodshed and disturbing moments, and the ending wrapped everything up well. Some parts do drag on, and I was hoping for another plot twist or two, but regardless, this was a good one.
I will never look at an arcade the same ever again.
