Together: Why We Need the Local Church

Rate this book
“An accessible and compelling case for why you should be an active member of a church.”

—AARON M. RENN, author of Life in the Negative World

Does joining a local church seem like a hassle—a distraction from your spiritual growth? Does the local church even matter? Busy lives and difficult relationships can hold you back from embracing the shared life only found in a local church.

In this book, brothers Gabriel and Isaac Wingfield explore how God has given us the local church because we can’t live the Christian life on our own. If becoming a member of a church is not something you’ve considered—or perhaps even something you’ve avoided—this book will help you discover the wonderful gift of our shared life in the local church.

This Book...

• Shows why the church should matter for every Christian
• Unpacks how the church really is political—but in surprising ways
• Makes a strong case why every church should practice church discipline
• Will make you rethink your basic commitments in light of Christ’s kingdom
• Re-frames Christian discipleship as a group project, not a individual exercise
• Will help you put your church membership into action

Crown & Covenant Publications sent me a copy of "Together: Why We Need the Local Church" by Gabriel Wingfield and Isaac Wingfield in exchange for an honest review.

One of the vices of modern American Christianity is the idea that we don't need the institutional and local church. People think that they don't need to go to church or that church is an option. The Wingfields focus on the local church and winsomely demonstrate the folly of that thinking.

This book is wonderful. It explores the necessity of the local church from so many angles and does so with a very pastoral tone. It explores the church as the kingdom ruled by King Jesus. It looks at it as a family and a home. It also covers vital topics like how we should think about church officers, authority, and discipline. It gets into the practicality of living together in a community. The chapters are rich, yet brief and accessible. I finished this book with an even greater appreciation of my local church than I had before reading it. I truly believe it will have a similar effect on you, regardless of where you are in your walk with Christ. If you love Christ, you ought to love his church, and this book is a phenomenal way to grow in this love. I highly recommend checking it out!

In Together, Gabriel Wingfield and Isaac Wingfield explain why we need the local church.

The Wingfield brothers compare the church to a society, a body, and a ship. As a society, the church is a family with Jesus as the King of the kingdom. As a body, the church is joined together and grows together. I most enjoyed learning about the church as a ship, where we are called to get on board, not jump ship, train the crew, and sing as we go.

The Community God Gives

I most resonated with the chapter on how your local church should be conveniently close. There was a period in my life when I lived farther away, and it did make attending church more difficult. We now live closer to our church, and it has been a game changer.

Church membership matters. Together is a book that will help you see why we need the local church and will help you better cherish the community God has given you.

I received a media copy of Together and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep
