Was da alles so passiert, könnt ihr dann ja selbst herausfinden. ...

Realmente lo has intentado.

Awww... I really hate to say this because I love this series so much, but this volume was boring! I mean, I understand knowing past story lines is important, but maybe it would have been less boring for me if it had been something done sporadically through a couple of volumes instead of all in one. Oh well... life goes on. I'll wait for the 9th volume in high anticipation as it'll get back to the main story and will be awesome!

The only thing this volume did for me was made me sad that Soichiro isn't around because I think I'd really love him a lot :-( Hopefully he'll show up in a few more of Teru's dreams!

For those who don't know (though I don't know how you wouldn't if you're trying to find information on volume 8), Dengeki Daisy is about Teru Kurebayashi, a sixteen-year-old orphan protected by a mysterious stranger named Daisy and annoyed daily by her school's janitor, Tasuku Kurosaki. At least, that's how it started. A lot has happened since.

Whereas the previous volume was about how things don't always work out the way you hope, this one explores Tasuku's past after his disappearance and the importance of knowing the full extent of the sin before a person can give true forgiveness.

It helps that Teru starts off wanting to forgive Tasuku. Because she has no idea how he could possibly bear any responsibility in her brother's death, it's easy to forgive. But what makes her fantastic as a heroine is that she's not willing to forgive Tasuku based on her limited knowledge. She wants to know exactly how he was involved so that her forgiveness has meaning and can't be easily shot down.

As a result, there's a lot of dialogue in this volume. Lots. Flashbacks are handled well and weave beautifully with the present, including scenes with Tasuku trying to fix a mistake from his past that might effect Teru. In the process, we find out just how dark Tasuku's life has been. This makes for some incredibly poignant scenes between Tasuku and Soichiro. It also gives enormous depth to previous scenes that focused on Soichiro's request that Tasuku, as Daisy, watch over his sister.

Though there is some humor in this, it's not as pronounced as in previous volumes and with good reason. There's murder, conspiracy, blackmail, politics, and even an attempted suicide (one of my favorite scenes in this volume by the way).

The best part, however, was discovering just how Tasuku Kurosaki "killed" Soichiro Kurebayashi. Seeing the details make you glad by the end that Teru is now able to fully forgive Tasuku.

Not just that. She's going to go after him herself and prove it to him.

I know that the back story is essential and it pains me to say this since I love this series so much but THIS VOLUME WAS SO BORING. And I was confused many times. I'm still not sure if I understand everything.

So we finally learn why Kurosaki thinks he killed Teru's brother. The eighth volume of Dengeki Daisy is largely set in the past. Starting in Kurosaki's childhood going through Tasuku's (Teru's brother) death just as the series was beginning, the tale of Kurosaki's past is long and twisty.

Rest assured, Kurosaki is innocent. Not entirely - he did create a very powerful virus that did a lot of damage - but his fundamental nature was always good. His criminal tendencies predicated in a desire to avenge those who harmed his father. Kurosaki's father had been wrongly blamed for selling state secrets and it essentially killed him. Kurosaki and a few others were convinced his father was framed. In his youth, Kurosaki was driven by anger. It took Tasuku and his merry band of employees to turn Kurosaki's fury into something productive, when he came to work for their company.

We see both sides of Kurosaki in his past. The abrasive delinquent type who verges on rudeness in his interactions with Teru and others. The quiet, smart, polite type who became friends with Tasuku, his co-workers, and fell in love with Teru. Actually, we see much more of the quiet side. It is sometimes hard to believe the same funny Kurosaki that we see today is the young man who worked at Tasuku's company.

The volume is sadly lacking in romantic moments since Teru and Kurosaki are separated. There are a few cute moments between a junior high aged Teru and Kurosaki, especially because neither realizes their future connection. But Kurosaki's past is so important to the plot of this series, that the lack of romance is forgiveable.

Volume 8 is a plot heavy volume. I enjoyed it, because it answered so many questions about Kurosaki, but also because now that Kurosaki's past is out in the open, we can move on with the story.

Basically perfect. I mean I guess I could talk about what happens in this volume and the emotional ride it took me on but pretty much everything I'd say would boil down to this story is perfect and Dengeki Daisy is officially one of my favourite shoujo manga ever.

Ugh, you still want to know what happens? Fine, fine. Basically this is the extended flashback volume where Kurosaki's backstory is revealed. It is full of tragedy but also amazing beautiful found family scenes with Soichiro and Riko and Boss and all the older characters connected with Kurosaki we've known for awhile. Lots of movement on the hacking plot too if you're into that kind of thing. (I'm into that kind of thing). Also Motomi continues in her quest to make me ever more distressed that this manga started off with Soichiro dead. Crying about Soichiro: the Dengeki Daisy reading experience. ;_; But he was so perfect! I can't deal with these Terebayashi siblings, with their goofiness and intelligence and kindness. How can you write someone so entirely delightful who has such fantastic dynamics with pretty much every major cast member and be like he's dead, you will only ever get to see him flashbacks. How do you sleep at night Kyousuke Motomi!? 5 stars

I was nervous to read this volume. Dengeki Daisy is at a crucial point in the story where we finally get an answer we've been waiting for since the very first volume. What, exactly, did Kurosaki do to Teru's brother? By now, the reader should have been able to piece together the general gist of what happened, but in these chapters, we're given the final pieces. The emotional intricacies of the characters laid out in these chapters saves the day from the cop-out explanation that I was fearing.

There was a lot of talking in this volume. I would have preferred less reliance on wordy explanations and more reliance on the art to tell the story. Granted, Dengeki Daisy covers tricky subjects to use art to convey a large portion of the story - computer hacking and government intrigue - but I know it can be done. After all, I love graphic novels so much because the art often says more than words ever can. Thus, when words are used too much, not enough story is being told in my opinion, if that makes sense.

Next volume better get us back to the cute quirky romance of the story, though. Just sayin'...

I think this was actually one of my favorite volumes in a long time. We finally get the full story behind Kurosaki's guilt complex and what really happened with him and Soichiro, as well as the back story on the infamous "Jack Frost" computer virus Kurosaki created. As the computer hacker intrigue was one of the things that got me hooked on this series to begin with, it was really nice to get back to that as a change of pace from all the angst and drama--ha!

I still love the series and, yes, this volume fills in the needed back story with a massive info dump. I don't mind any of that. I wish it made more sense. I worked in IT and parts of this confused me. Characters would allude to things and then say, well you can guess what happened...or some similar vague statement that completely avoided any definitive explanation for the reader. The complex backstory gains some clarity in the later chapters, at least. With as skilled as Motomi is with facial expressions and storytelling with art, I think much of this could and should have been handled differently. Instead of exposition, the chapters would have been more enjoyable as a quick jaunt into flashbacks with the context and expressive art to help tell the storyb as was done in the later chapters.

All of that aside, a tiny gripe has grown a bit. This series is big on owning personal responsibility, like when Teru attacked the girl bullying her a volume or two back. Yes, you should take responsibility for your actions, but the way this story forces it doesn't allow the character to feel the effects of being victimized. There's no allowance for cause and effect. And that plays large into Kurosaki's sin. Basically, this says that if you're naive and between a rock and a hard place, and you're manipulated into making a wrong decision, then you're at fault and should feel guilty. Technically, true, but there's more to it and it's all that extra stuff that gets lost. That's not how life works and it's really crappy that that's the basis of Kurosaki's sin—especially when this responsibility isn't applied in reverse, like to Soichiro's choice in aiding a blackmailer instead of tending to his health, and therefore choosing to abandon his sister by foregoing any life saving treatment (given that he's dead, I don't think that's much of a spoiler). This inconsistent forward momentum of personal responsibility has been bugging me for some time, but really peaked in this volume.

This issue tells the "necessary" story of why Daisy is to blame for Teru's brother's death. And it is slow paced and boring compared to the rest of the manga thus far. It's not even that surprising about what the truth is, though it's good to have answers. The appeal of this manga, for me, is the romance and the little bit of intrigue. Making it 100% a hacker story for an issue just... didn't win me over. I'll keep reading, though, but with 30+ chapters to go, I'm a little turned off and might read with a little more trepidation now.

Plot stuff! Kurosaki disappears to hunt down the notorious virus. It’s revealed that in the past he was tricked into giving the virus to a politician who killed their mentor. In order to get evidence within an encrypted computer, Teru’s brother had to sacrifice the six months remaining of life in order to break the code and encryption, he missed out on hospital visits in order to do so.

Teru misses Daisy and is trying to get him back.

Seeing the formation of the team and the bromance between Kurosaki and Soichiro develop warmed my heart. This volume was quite emotional. It was sad seeing everything in ruins after reaching such heights. I feel terrible for Kurosaki and everything life forced him to endure. I really appreciated the tone and emotional depth in this - terrific backstory. 5/5.
