From the duo behind New York Times bestseller, Thug Kitchen , comes the next installment of kick-ass recipes with a side of attitude. Thug Kitchen: Party Grub answers the question that they have heard most from their fans: How the hell are you supposed to eat healthy when you hang around with a bunch of assholes who couldn't care less about what they stuff in their face? The answer: You make a bomb-ass plant-based dish from Thug Kitchen. Featuring over 100 recipes for every occasion, Party Grub combines exciting, healthy food with easy-to-follow directions and damn entertaining commentary.
From appetizers like Deviled Chickpea Bites to main events like Mexican Lasagna, Thug Kitchen: Party Grub is here to make sure you're equipped with dishes to bring the flavor without a side of fat, calories, and guilt. Also included are cocktail recipes, because sometimes these parties need a pick-me-up of the liquid variety.
Thug Kitchen is here to help your narrow dietary mind explore some goddamn options so that you can look and feel like a fucking champ. We hope readers reconsider what kind of behaviors they attribute to people who try to eat healthy. Everyone deserves to feel a part of our push toward a healthier diet, not just people with disposable incomes who speak a certain way. So we're here to help cut through the bullshit. Promoting accessibility and community are important as fuck here at Thug Kitchen. We've got a big table and everyone is welcome to it.
Thug Kitchen does a great job making vegan food accessible and interesting, especially to curious non-vegans. Gimmick aside, I always enjoy their recipes and the flexibility they encourage to home cooks.
This cookbook's shtick of cursing a bunch and hurling random exclamatory statements at the reader just became obnoxious after the first few pages. Worse, however, is that the authors' flavors are just off.
For example:
Stuffed Mushrooms: served this at a Super Bowl Party. Was embarrassed by how bland they were and ended up doing a very unveagan thing and smooshed a bunch of feta into them to add... something with flavor.
Roasted Vegetables with Pasta: the flavor profile of this dish is Balsamic Vinegar. That's it.
Pad Thai Spring Rolls: The rolls themselves were a good idea; although, again required more seasoning in the filling than what the authors recommend. The dipping sauce, however, is ketchup. SMDH.
Oh, and can we just not use the word "Thug" anymore? Thanks.
As with the other "Thug Kitchen" titles, the recipes are fun to read about from a novelty aspect, make pretty good food, but would be nothing extraordinary without the humor.
If you want to know just how hideously racist, dishonest, inconsistent, hypocritical, narcissistic, and cringeworthy these charlatans really are, I highly recommend The Bearded Vegans 2 part podcast "GASLIGHT: The Thug Kitchen Story" and all linked sources which you can see here: https://thecommentist.com/bearded-veg... https://thecommentist.com/bearded-veg... Don't mistake their corporate appropriation of the current political climate as accountability.
Shockingly this was my favorite cookbook of the year, considering all of its gimmicks. It has a good range of things you can put together last minute to handcrafted pierogis that you'll slave away at for hours, and both will turn out delicious. My favorite recipe was the Apple-Onion Focaccia, it become a regular weekly dinner and even my non-vegan friends loved it and started making it themselves. Sometimes the novel aggressive writing makes it hard to follow a recipe, but you can train your eyes to just gloss over it with practice. Thank you, Kenzie, for letting me borrow this during the holiday season!
I can't wait to try some recipes from this cookbook. I'm not a vegan, but I like the idea of more plant based meals and the recipes in here sound delicious. My husband (true carnivore) is even excited to try it out. I didn't even have to twist his arm or trick him. The colorful language is not suitable for kids or prudes, but I think it's funny.
Pictures of Recipes? Some Commentary on Recipes? Yes Nutrition Facts? No Recipe style? See review below. Any keepers? One or two.
There will be people who will never pick up this book because the profanity offends them.
I'm not a vegan, but I am very interested in finding new & healthy recipes. Given the unending popularity of this series, I flipped through this one. It seems like the 'thug' premise is wearing on the authors. I can just imagine someone sitting at their computer, trying to figure a way to sprinkle a few more F-words into a recipe. As with the first book, I did find a few recipes that I wanted to keep.
Good job bringing vegan cooking to the masses by alienating potential readers from the start.
They had this at my library so I picked it up. First thought glancing at some of the photographs: Wow! I can imagine my blue-collar meat-loving family eating these at parties. So that was a win. I also appreciated the beginning of the book where the writers wrote about how social gatherings can often depress and throw you off your game if you don't have a plan or bring some delicious veg stuff. But the cursing and writing was just ughhhh. I am a fairly liberal curser and am still struggling to get it all out of my language when in the house with my toddler daughter but GEEZ! The amount of cursing and the way the curses were utilized was just overkill. Yuck.
Odd combo for POV of attitude (use of expletives don't make me want to read the book let alone taste the food) and healthy eating. "Glitter' and 'badasses' show up in the same paragraph - doesn't make sense. in terms on food, nothing really new or different.
This book is NOT for those who don't like swearing. The text is extremely blue, but that's what makes this cookbook so special. Aside from the language, the recipes (all Vegan in this edition) are reasonably simple to make, and good explanations and definitions are given for terms a novice cook might not know. Although I'm not Vegan, I bookmarked a few recipes that I believe I could enjoy, and serve to my Vegan friends without needing to purchase many items that would have no other use in my cupboard. I only have this book because I picked it out of a discard bin and was shocked/intrigued by the language, and thought to myself...."I need to explore this book!" Three stars because the recipes are viable. There is a whole series. I discovered my Vegan friend has a meat book in this series, so she and I will trade!
Mostly simple recipes for vegan party and snack foods. Recipes are somewhat under-seasoned, with plain flavors but that's probably due to the authors trying to keep a lower ingredient count. They seem to be trying to appeal to people who aren't familiar with vegan food or maybe even cooking in general. The design of the cookbook is fantastic; it's a pleasure to look at. Not so much of a pleasure to read. The gimmick of using profanity is ok, but it's repeated over and over and over and gratuitously. Gets old quick.
This was both hilarious to read (because of frequent swearing) and was actually fun and I learned things about cooking. Yes, I may not be vegan but I do like flavorful food and this book is packed with recipes that I want to try and I saved quite a few of them for later. I’m tentatively thinking about buying this and others by the authors as it was a really good read and it’s always nice to have your own hard copy of a book, right? So get reading!
I love Thug Kitchen and this cookbook was no exception. Unique vegetarian recipes partnered with hysterical commentary made this one a keeper. A better chunk of the recipes seem to have preparation that is a bit more involved, so I would say the difficulty level might be a bit more to take into consideration when looking at this book. Doesn't mean I won't though.
Kind of funny. The recipes seem okay, but I'm not vegan or vegetarian. There were only three recipes I'd actually try. I liked that authors included the basics like the different types of oils and how to roast a beet or bell pepper. I also liked the social extras like putting weird random stuff in your medicine cabinet for snoopers.
Re-read because sometimes all your brain wants is a funny cookbook. I've made a few recipes from the TK books so far, and they've all been amazing, so definitely check these out if you're looking for new kitchen ideas.
Ill be honest this book wasnt as good as the first IMO, still funny but the recipes were kinda harder and more expensive. Often portions would not be suitable for a party either but still the food was good the drinks were the highlight of the book really
I personally liked their original cookbook better, but that's probably just because cooking meals for one for dinner is more useful for me than making food for parties. I don't do parties.
Delicious, easy, imaginative food. People at your parties will think you are a genius. Just read and follow directions. And reading through the commentary is entertaining...........
Awesome ideas for having tasty and relatively healthy vegan food that will serve a group. Found some good re-takes on old favorites and a lot of new awesomeness.
I absolutely LOVE the whole THUG Kitchen Vibe. These recipes gave me a better handle on what to do with some problematic veggies when cooking for none vegans. Always hilarious and delicious.
