I Just Married a Grumpy NFL Star with Rules, Walls, and Zero Intentions to Fall in Love.
I faint onstage and wake up trending, exposed, and unsafe in my own life. My team offers a a PR marriage to Camden Drake, an NFL star who hates attention more than I do.
He’s guarded, intimidating, and built like a wall meant to keep the world out.
We marry for optics, not butterflies. The rules are simple and signed in ink. No intimacy. No feelings. No mistakes.
Then come the staged dates and fake kisses. Only his hands linger, his eyes soften, and nothing about them feels pretend.
And suddenly, I’m gone. His smile makes my heart race, and his quiet support starts to feel like home.
That’s when old wounds resurface and doubt creeps in. By all accounts, our PR marriage is “successful.”
But if this was only ever a transaction, trusting him won’t just complicate our fake marriage. It’ll mean I fell for a man who only wanted me because I was useful.
Sweet enough to make you sigh, and clean enough to share with your grandma--no steamy scenes, no salty language, just sweet romance.
But if this was only ever a transaction, trusting him won’t just complicate our fake marriage. It’ll mean I fell for a man who only wanted me because I was useful.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and even though I wasn’t required to post a review, I wanted to offer my honest, voluntary impression after finishing it.
I have read and enjoyed Susie’s series on hockey players and this new book about a football player just may be a new series instead of a stand alone. There are certainly plenty of guys ( Cam’s friends and teammates) to fill in for him now he’s taken and I’m sure the girls interested in the guys won’t be a problem either.
Lila is a pop star but the constant attacks from her ex has worn her down to the point of exhaustion and not wanting to be in the public at all! Cam is in a similar situation with allegations from his ex. Trust issues abound for both but their respective teams of PR people suggest a professional matchmaking service with a contract. After some hesitation from both they agree and little by little their guards are dropped as they find an attraction to each other and when their fans and PR people clamor for more stability they enter into the next phase and actually get married to each other but boundaries are clearly spelled out to protect each other. However, they finally kiss on a unguarded moment but the press is there and the spin is both are using the other to further their own careers . This causes them to shut down until Lila is brave enough to publicly announce her feelings causing Cam to do the same before her next sold out concert!
The dynamic of both being used in the past by their exes is paramount in their minds throughout this time they are together and it’s hard for each to accept that the other isn’t showing interest only to improve their own image and not because they really believe what they say! Communication, trust, bad experiences from past relationships are always on the surface and old fears rise up when the press makes it appear such is the case once again for them. Trust is always something that needs to be assured in any relationship though for most of us we’re not thrown into the spotlight because the person we fall for is famous so the press leaves us alone. When they twist things for their own narrative things go sideways fast unless the relationship is grounded in trust for each other. Even so the past still wants you to think this person is no different from those who have hurt you previously!
I enjoyed the raw vulnerability displayed by both Cam and Lila and could feel their past betrayals and the feeling history was repeating itself once again. Vulnerability and trust when they seem to be broken leaves one shattered and sometimes it takes a drastic step to let the other know how you truly feel when outside forces say just the opposite!
I throughly enjoyed this story and I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend it to everyone who is looking for a sweet, no spice story that you will be rooting for both main characters to stay together in!
The thing with Susie’s stories is they are so lifelike that you forget what you are reading is a story! You feel like you are reading about what actually happened to real people and whose to say that what you just read hasn’t happened to real people but you just never heard about it!
I urge you to get and enjoy this book and if you want more stories like this one, check out Susie’s hockey series! I guarantee you’ll love them as much as this one because I’ve read them and loved them myself! I seriously guarantee you won’t be disappointed by getting and reading this book!
I received an Advanced Readers Copy this is my honest review.
This story starts off intense before the main characters have even met in the first two chapters with Lila and Cam each caught in media scandal chaos by their exes that The Elite Relationship Solutions pairing can help moderate the chaos. The closed in feeling the first nine chapters offer has this book have a different feel to previous books read by this reader like waiting for the other shoe to drop or a suspense story with no lightness to ease the building tension.
Then from Chapter 11 the story is a lighter and their relationship slowly builds moment by moment from detailed contract marriage to safe place to messy to oh no to awww
Loved some the descriptions like this one from Cam - "My team is a pack of golden retrievers who found a steak and learned how to whistle." (Chapter 16)
Loved the team dinner dynamic reminscent of Dragons locker room banter in previous series or Kelce brothers podcast.
This book takes the characters through messy emotions of hurt, pride, insecurities, love, while taking the reader along on the journey
Elite Relationship Solutions comes across like an emotionless PR firm that trigger differing emotions and feeling in the characters with each interaction making it seem robotic instead of supportive except for a few interactions in the final few chapters.
Wish List / Bingo Card for future books by this reader from characters in this story:
Other Couples at Elite Relationship Solutions wedding scene: 1. Petite women with sketchbook and man in dark coat
2. another couple waits their turn. The man looks well-dressed and profoundly bored, like this is a dentist appointment he didn’t want but couldn’t cancel. The woman beside him wears jeans and a sparkly handbag and stares at the paperwork like it might still dissolve if she glares hard enough.
3. Stories of Cam's football team players - Jax, Devon, Hunter
4. Novella for Manny (Lila's bodyguard) and Evelyn (Founder of ERS)
A reader can wish and hope for stories but all depends on Susie Heart and the characters ....
ARC review I have read several of the author's prior books. The author's style of writing I would describe as happy, easy read, and feel good. Antecdotal thoughts while reading.... Lila - FMC, singer, recent spotlight has not been favorable, Cam - MMC, football player, recent allegations in the media Lila's management team works fast. They need to though to protect her. We all know what "fine" means Cam! Been there, done that, use it daily in teaching littles. Strategic companionship needs to happen. Ok, could be interesting. Interesting past connection between the two. “You’re both here because of urgency.” "You need help." "Now." Um....what are you recommending!??!?! I know it wasn't how Taylor and Travis got together, but I see connections. “You keep doing the right thing,” I say finally. “Even when it’s hard.” No truer words have been spoken Cam. The sound of ink scratching across the page feels louder than it should. I love how silently, yet in proximity to each other, they are there for each other already. Cam you are a wise one. Cam and Travis protecting their rockstar girls, using that height and muscle as a buffer. "anchoring instead of claiming" Waking up to a melody does all that, huh. Oh snap Cam. You and Manny need to get a movin. Both of you have so many prior issues you can't trust yourselves in the here and now. Both were useful and not chosen. 🥺 Finally Lila you are putting yourself first rather than the business. "I'm coming for you" "I...I don't know." Oh dang, I hope this is a grand declaration!!!! Perfect ending!
Lila is a well-known pop star. Cam is a football player. Both of them are having image problems, because people would rather believe a scandal than the truth. Enter Elite Relationship Solutions, which—like it says on the tin—helps with image by matching clients together based on their situations.
Sure, it means they have to get married. But it’s hopefully going to be better than Lila’s ex slandering her everywhere he can, and a woman Cam doesn’t even know and never dated filing a lawsuit and claiming he got her pregnant.
It’s a terrible commentary on our world, isn't it? That people can just lie about you, and everyone will believe it, regardless of facts.
What Lila and Cam don’t expect is the instant chemistry, which they both try to deny. Cam naturally goes into protector mode when Lila is threatened, and Lila shows up for him when he doesn’t expect it. Still, unspoken fears cause problems. Just talk to each other, people. It’s always best to be sure than to “what if” yourself into fear.
I could not put this book down. It sucked me in immediately, and kept me engaged until the end. I even had an ugly happy cry moment during the climax. These characters are famous to the outside world, but they don’t act spoiled and entitled. They’re both so relatable, even with the trappings of fame.
This is a bit longer than the books this author usually writes, but that’s not a complaint. The story was not too short, and not too long. Trust me, it will grab hold of you and make you sit down and read it in one sitting. You best get going on that.
Tropes: * Sport romance * PR marriage * Marriage of convenience * Grumpy x sunshine * Opposites attract * Ex’s who won’t stay gone * Mental health rep
“You shouldn’t have to go through this alone.”
What a way to highlight the challenges that celebrities face! Deranged fans, horrible ex’s, false accusations and the significant stress from repeat encroachments. Cam… a false accusation almost derails his career. Lila… a constant mental health struggle while feeling unsafe after pursuing her passion.
“Why is my value always measured by how pretty I look while I’m hurting.”
The story was good. The way they came together was downright strange, but their relationship? Well, that was seriously sweet how they grew and developed. Not without angst, though… I wish that part wasn’t in there, but it does work for their character growth… I loved how they helped each other stand up, he protected her, she gave him support. Just gorgeous.
It seems to be a standalone. I think the author has a potential series starter here though. I mean, seriously… his teammates are awesome, and all deserve a story!
A story of a football player and a singer finding love despite the baggage that they carry from previous relationships clouding nearly ever interaction. The found family of Cam's football brothers adds to the story. I really wanted to know how Lila and Cam get to their HEA given Cam's behaviors that seemed to convey that he wasn't really invested in the relationship (at least that's how Lila would perceive his hot and cold actions), but I struggled with some of the key plot points... why did they have to marry? Wouldn't a fake relationship be sufficient to assist with the image issues that they were hoping a relationship would solve? Assuming a fake marriage was required, why so much secrecy around it? And why was it such a big deal when it came to light? I really didn't see Cam's love for Lila; so many of his actions were selfish, but to the author's credit, I was still invested in Lilia's HEA. There are some issues with the plot that didn't make sense to me.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review. I give this book 4.5 stars. This is a clean sweet romance that came with relationship trauma and trust issues. I felt the writer grasped the idea of what a celebrity goes through and how their teams manage damage control to their image/brand/careers. Also brings the reality of trust issues from past relationships into a new and how to overcome those obstacles that keep you trap where you are. I enjoyed the dynamic between Cam and Lila and how they just worked together in supporting each other in their own quiet ways. I also liked that they each had a set of people who cared for them and knew when they lying about how they were coping and called them on it. Ultimately, after some hiccups, they found their footing and back to each other. I have not read anything else by this author but will definitely want to read more of her books. Highly recommend.

This book did it go how I was expecting it to go. And I’m perfectly happy about that. The characters in this book are endearing and lovely. Our MCs are beyond relatable. Both are damaged in ways people don’t expect or what’s deemed acceptable. Lila is afraid and wants nothing more than to feel safe, to feel seen. It’s as if she isn’t allowed to take up space. Cam is guarded and closed off, he’s tired of being used then discarded. Cam wants to matter beyond what he can give someone. The two are pushed together by circumstances and everything changes. The connection and chemistry between Cam and Lila is instantly obvious to everyone but them. The struggles they face and feelings that come to the surface during their interactions, both with each other and the outside world, are relatable and feel so real to the reader. This was a cute story and a good read for anyone.
Two super stars that need their images strengthened, polished, and presented to the public. Old images banished. Safety foremost, and all doubts removed. As Lila crumpled from doubt and anxiety, Cam steps in as a sure and steady support for her. It's scary to see how little control either one actually has.
The author steps in confidently and gives both Lila and Cam what they need to be successful and happy. (Perhaps not what they think they need or as easily as they hope.) This is a charming love story that is football and vocal performance adjacent, and will stay with you long after the final page.
This book was absolutely amazing! Two souls hurt by the outside world, wanting to feel whole again. It was beautiful! Cam and Lila were great to watch. Cam, football star with bad press surrounding him (not his fault but perception is all that matters), and Lila, popular that doesnt feel safe. Her ex is a tool and made her feel small and insignificant. These two are thrown together for PR purposes, to help each other. I loved watching the barriers lower and their attraction become real. But what happens when past fears speak louder? This was an emotional journey that I was sorry to leave behind.
Camden is having a problem with an ex spouting lies about him. Lila's ex is sending messages about her that have been amended to make it appear that she's an awful person. Both their PR teams suggest a fake marriage, they aren't happy about it but she's become afraid of being on stage and the paparazzi. He's losing sponsors and maybe benched. So really they have little choice. Lila feels safer with Cam around but they don't communicate enough, they keep things to themselves because of how they've been treated in the past.
Well now, there's Lila Hart, singing star, vulnerable from previous partner's coercive behaviour. And Camden Drake, NFL star player, flayed by previous girlfriends untruths in the press. Lila's quiet and insecure. Cam's guarded and intimidating. Then ERS (Elite Relationship Solutions) is called in and presents the master plan, they ‘marry for the optics". Perfect, practical and profound, until emotions start getting in the way. Great story that hooked and reeled me in.
Interesting little “romcom”, (less than 200 pages). I’m not one to follow “celebrities”, but even I have heard about this Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce. It seems to me that they might have been an inspiration for this story which makes them into complex “real people”. That was an important lesson I learned from this sweet book of which I was fortunate enough to obtain an ARC. Such an enjoyable read I can’t wait for more from Susie Heart.
Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions! I couldn’t stop reading, I was so invested in the story. Lila and Cam have been through so much, but they are perfect for each other, even if they don’t realize it at first. When Cam made his speech at the concert I was crying happy tears. A fantastic book.
A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
This book was so cute!!! It was a slow and powerful burn. I loved how it showed a different side of people’s worlds and showed real life problems like fear and anxiety as well as feeling safe with the right person.
It was a marriage of conscience for two people healing from trauma and past scars with a happily ever after !
A sweet football romance featuring Cam, the football star with bad press surrounding him, and Lila, a popular that doesn’t feel safe. They are thrown together for PR purposes to help each other. Eventually, the fell for real. It was well written and the characters were well developed and likable except for Lila’s ex who wasn’t likeable. A great read.
Can be read as a standalone but I hope it's part of an interconnected series. Several of the secondary characters need their story told also. Arranged contract marriage of convenience Opposites attract PR rehabilitation Ex's that won't stay in the past
I had reservations at first but as the story evolved, I feel in love with the characters. Two souls hurt and each guarded a certain way but find love and happiness. Amazing story and beautifully written
I never thought I could feel so much empathy towards celebrities but Lila's battle with anxiety and just wanting to feel safe while doing the thing she loves was so real and heartbreaking even though she was a pop star that seemingly had it all. Cam's legal woes hit so close to reality, how many celebrities have been falsely accused of something just for money or spotlight. Their love story was so pure even though the prearranged marriage company was a little weird the way they kept showing up for eachother before they even realized they were falling in love was so natural. The way he supported her and protected her without crowding her. The way she kept standing beside him so he didn't have to stand alone. I'm absolutely so in love with this story. I downloaded it the second the ARC hit my inbox and read it all in one sitting. Such a beautiful real love story. I love the anxiety representation so much!!
