This book has a lot of romance. The settings are worked into the story beautifully making readers feel they are on the cruise with the characters. I live the facts about the history of the Islands which are creatively interspersed within the context of the overall plot.
There is a lot of humor, especially with the seniors! I enjoyed them all very much. Shanna Hatfield created dome memorable characters in this book. This is my favorite thing about it.
I like that the book is clean and sweet. The romance develops naturally and in a cute way with some humor. The male protagonist, JJ, is confident and very male without being rude. Very nice.
I did not care for the ending. Shanna Hatfield’s books all have a similar pattern. She puts her characters together, makes them reluctant to start a relationship, makes them fall in love, then has one or the other decide that they don’t want pain or are too bad for the other only to get them together again in the last chapters. This book is no exception. For me, this yo-yo ruins the flow of the character development as well as the plot.
What could have been handled through creatively written emails or texts (insert a cleaner Ginny Sterling here who wrote two whole romance series about people who fall in love by being pen pals), was bluntly cut off by…the fear trope. What would romance writers do without it?! They might write a whole relationship instead of just a romance.
This book has a happy ending so I am not complaining too much. I do like that the book is very clear about what happens in the very end.
JJ McKade flies to Florida every year for his vacation just for his grandmother’s birthday. This one is her 80th, but instead of JJ getting to surprise Grams, she surprises him! He was so exhausted after his long day, working the cattle ranch, then flying out to FL, that he just wanted to eat supper and go to sleep! Boy, was he ever shocked when Grams woke him up at around 4 am, taking him to the big store that’s open all day and night and sells everything, telling him to load up for a cruise with all of the appropriate clothes and shoes! WHAT!?! He’s never worn anything but jeans and boots, so he is pretty lost…and a little upset that he was not given any notice. His G rams has 3 of her best friends coming along, too. There is nothing that JJ wouldn’t do for his sweet Grams, so he decides to make the best of it. First thing he does is bump into a horticulturist, an employee of the cruise line. He is able to prevent her from dropping the lilies she was about to plant, when their eyes met, and I truly believe they fell head over heels and boots in love! The book is so funny, witty, and fast-paced considering there were so many octogenarians on this cruise! You really should get this book for yourself! It’s fresh, clever, and down-right sweet! I was on the arc team and was not required to give a good review. This is my honest review of one if the most charming books I’ve read in months! (I’ve already read approximately 20 books this month) 📕♥️ This book may make you crave a cruise! 🚢
Love at first sight, He didn't believe in it. Neither did she. After being forced to take a cruise with his grandmother, a trip he never knew about because his mom and grandmother plotted the two week trip without his knowledge. On the first day of the cruise, JJ was already annoyed because his grandmother booked him under the name Skippy. A name he dislikes. He was exhausted having traveled all day and late into the night the day before to get to his grandmother's place in Florida. When he moved and almost knocked her and the plant she carried, to the floor. Kinsley, was working on the cruise ship tending the plants and frogs. It's was a hectic day as it always is the day they dock to disembark passengers, then embark new passengers. Added to the fray she was responsible for gathering up all the plants that were waiting to be loaded onto the ship so she and her crew could plant them. Now, she'd just about been knocked to the floor while carrying an orchid. But, when she looks up to see who ran into her, she was greeted by the sight of an incredibly handsome man. JJ thought Kinsley was the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. But, ships rules were such that Kinsley wasn't supposed to date or spend time with any of the guests. 12 days at sea. What could possibly happen? I was gifted this book as an ARC reader.
A cowboy on a cruise ship - sounds like a recipe for fun. Which it is. Loved this standalone sweet romantic comedy which has layers of fun, dreams and romance.
"Abducted" by his nearly 80 year old grandmother, cowboy JJ is forced on board a cruise ship with his grandmother and her 3 loud friends. This is not his idea of a holiday! It seemed like it couldn't get much worse when the old man with his walker in the queue started getting friendly with his grandmother... now it looks like JJ will be chaperone as well as having to keep them all in line! But there are people on board who aren't 80 years old and thankfully a chance encounter with Kinsley leads to a budding romance and some help coping along the way!
I loved the fun in this story - I so felt for JJ at the start but loved how he got into the cruise and made it enjoyable for those he was with ... and himself. The romance was sweet and enticing. The scenery and stops along the way sounded amazing (now I want to do that cruise). I loved the connections to other books by this author too.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a lovely, sweet romance mostly set on board a cruise ship. There are a few couples formed during the cruise, but the main characters are Kinsley and JJ.
When JJ went to his Grandmother's house for their usual visit for her birthday, he was surprised to be whisked away to a cruise ship. Turns out his Mom was in on the secret, but they hadn't shared it with him. As a great grandson, he goes along with the plan good naturedly, and is pleasantly surprised to have a good time.
Part of that good time is meeting Kinsley, the on board horticulturist. Despite rules against fraternizing with guests, Kinsley is able to get special permission to attend outings with JJ, his grandmother and her friends, and the two of them begin to catch feelings. Their relationship is clean and respectful, and a joy for the reader to follow. Highly recommend this book!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Roped Into Paradise by Shanna Hatfield is a cowboy whose grandmother decides to surprise him with a Caribbean cruise in which he is accompanied by her and her friends. Of course, she is turning eighty, so the friends are celebrating with her. While celebrating they do a bit of matchmaking. JJ McKade and Kinsley Kline are living three time zones apart even though they become great friends and could be more. All of this is a great delight story with family friends and romance.
I only had one problem with the story, that was the grandmother registering JJ, a grown man, as the childhood nickname, she had given him. I would not do that to either of my grandsons because it caused JJ embarrassment. It seems like a silly and unnecessary thing to do especially since JJ had asked her not to call him that many years ago. I kept reading thinking she had memory problems or other health issues, but it was not the case. I was disappointed in her. Otherwise, it is a great sweet, wholesome romance.
This book by Shanna Hatfield is an absolute delight! It combines humour and sweetness in the best way possible. With a cowboy, a grandmother and her three best friends, a single stranger, and his nephew aboard a cruise at sea, you're in for an entertaining ride.
JJ McKade thinks he’s going to spend a relaxing two weeks with his grandmother at her sunny Florida condo, celebrating her birthday. Instead, he unexpectedly finds himself on a Caribbean cruise orchestrated by his crafty grandma. Surrounded by meddling matchmakers, unexpected friendships, and the vibrant chaos of cruise life, JJ can’t resist the charm of Kinsley Kline, the ship’s captivating horticulturist. The catch? Crew members fraternising with passengers is strictly off-limits.
The humour, especially from the seniors, is absolutely infectious, making you feel like you’re right there on the cruise with the characters! There is a lot of humour, especially with the seniors! It makes me want to go on a Caribbean cruise.
Fantastic book! When JJ leaves the (frozen) ranch in Oregon and takes his annual Winter trip to Florida to spend quality time with his Grams for her birthday, he has no idea she plans to kidnap him and take him on an eleven-day Caribbean Cruise. But it gets worse---she is meeting three of her best girl friends on the ship. Talk about a cowboy in deep water! I laughed until I cried and recognized some of the octogenarians—or some just like them! JJ would rather be anywhere else---until he meets Kinsley. He had no idea that the ship’s horticulturist would be the girl, soul mate, that was the girl of his dreams. Don’t miss this sweet, clean romance where Shanna Hatfield paints a beautiful picture of family, enduring friendship, and love. You will smell the sea air and feel the tropical wind. If you have always wondered what it would be like to go on a cruise---you need to read this book! Just don’t look for romance unless you are a hunky cowboy!
Oh what a fun book this is! How would you react if you thought you were going to be spending your grandma’s birthday with her at home and arriving to be swept away on a cruise? What a shock! Then throw in her eccentric friends who joined her and have decided to make it their mission to find you a girlfriend. In the process his grandmother has registered him as “Skippy,” a childhood nickname. I felt like I was on this cruise with them! Our author does such a great job at details, you can almost smell the ocean breeze and feel it in your hair! Thankfully her grandson does have a friend along who is the grandson of a friend of his grandmother’s. He meets one of the ship’s botanist who he would really like to get know a lot better, but ship rules do not allow guest /staff relationships. What can he do to get around this without getting her in any trouble? You won’t want to miss this very entertaining book!
I absolutely loved JJ and Kinsley! They each had wonderful, lovable traits, and were such a good match. They worked so well together to help JJ’s grandmother have a wonderful, memorable birthday. It was really sweet how much JJ did for his grandmother. Now, for the “helpful” meddling older group – what a mess they were! They definitely made me laugh a lot, although I will admit to feeling so badly for JJ at the beginning for all that his grandmother and her friends put him through. But after a short while, they all became very dear people, who just had a different flair for life. This book flowed well and was a lot of fun to read. It included a lot of information about how life on a cruise ship might go, as well as so much about the ports they went to. It was obvious that the author had done a lot of research for this wonderful book.
JJ didn’t expect to go an a cruise with Grams this year, he didn’t expect to have to babysit three other old ladies (Grams’ best friends), he didn’t expect to have fun, he didn’t expect to meet the girl of his dreams….Kinsley…..if only the cruise rules weren’t in the way. What’s a guy to do?
Kinsley loves her job, her life, and her career…..until JJ stumbles into her life, literally, and makes her want a different future….if only the rules didn’t stand in their way.
Their story is a fun one, especially with the old ladies, but also a sad one at times as they have to decide what the future could be like. Some fears make things more difficult but they make it through.
Good story with all the feels, laughs, and sighs. I received a complimentary copy from the author and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
Oregon rancher JJ McKade travels to Florida every year for two weeks to celebrate his grandmother's birthday. Unbeknownst to him, she has planned a Caribbean cruise for the two of them and her three quirky friends this year. Boarding against his better judgment, JJ changes his mind when he meets Kinsley Kline, the ship's horticulturist.
Shanna Hatfield has departed from our beloved Oregon setting for the Caribbean in Roped Into Paradise, a fun and romantic comedy. I loved JJ and Kinsley's story. His devotion to his grandmother was admirable. The group's antics brought smiles and laughter. As is typical of this author, her descriptions made us feel as though we were right there on the cruise ship. There was also a nod to Parker and Poppy from Summer Creek.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
This is a fun adventure. JJ goes on an excellent adventure with his grandmother and her friends. When JJ takes his annual trip to see his grandmother, she has a surprise for him. She didn't tell him that she booked a cruise for them. Being the good grandson, JJ goes along with her. At first, he was reluctant but started to enjoy himself when he meets Kinsley. He keeps running into Kinsley, but he has to keep his distance because of the strict policy of the ship. Passengers and crew cannot fraternize. Before the cruise is over, JJ and Kinsley know that they are in love, but how are they going to mesh their lives. They live on opposite sides of the country. It is going to break both their hearts when the ship docks back in Florida. How can they say goodbye? Is their love real or is it just the romance of the cruise?
JJ goes to Florida to visit his grandmother for a few weeks and celebrate her birthday. She greets him with the news that they will be leaving the next morning for “a little boat ride.” Kinsley works on the cruise ship where she meets JJ, but policy forbids “fraternizing” with passengers. How can they develop a relationship when he will be returning home to his ranch home, and Kinsley will continue with her own plans?
This is a very enjoyable rom-com with Christian ethics. JJ’s lovable grandmother and her friends add a hilarious flavor to the story.
Favorite quote: “Grams had advised that sometimes the best and only thing to do was to take a step back and give God the time and room needed for His plans to be fulfilled.”
I received a copy of this book from the author. My review is entirely voluntary and unbiased.
Highly recommend this sweet clean romance and a lot more. Families, old and new friendships and a budding love story. Every January JJ leaves his ranch and the snow for Florida and sunshine. He spend 2 weeks with his grandma to attend to her to do list, get much needed rest and relaxation before the busy time on the ranch. But this year his grandma has "kidnapped" him for a cruise to the Caribbean..JJ wants to be anywhere else besides on this cruise with his grandma and 3 of her best friends. A celebration for Grandma's 80th birthday. Everything changes when JJ "bumps" into Kinsley. But there's a problem Kinsley works on the ship and it's forbidden to get involved with the passengers. That's easier said than done........ Pre-order your copy today for a January 29th release date and find out what's next for all passengers.
This was another delightful story by Shanna Hatfield. It is a beautiful picture of the love between a grandmother and her grandson. Although JJ is definitely a cowboy, he is out of his element on a Caribbean cruise. Even though he is there under protest, he learns to enjoy himself and even find the woman who captures his heart. It was so beautiful to see JJ's love, care and admiration for his grandmother, and he does everything he can to make her 80th birthday one that she will never forget. Her whacky friends, and the romance blooming between her and another octogenarian just add to the fun. This was a great story. Shanna never disappoints.
I received a copy of this book from the author as an ARC, but this is an honest review.
This was such a great story. JJ spends time in January every year to visit his grandmother, do work around her house, and celebrate her birthday. What a shock he gets when his visit turns into a surprise cruise with his grandmother and her best friends. I loved all the details about the ship and the excursions. Makes me excited for my upcoming cruise this summer! And, of course, JJ is going to meet someone who he falls for, I mean, it’s a Shanna Hatfield book! Kinsley is employed by the cruise line and is not supposed to get involved with passengers. Let’s see how that works out for them. A great fun read that I really enjoyed.
I received an ARC of this book from the author. My review is my own and voluntary.
This was such a sweet and fun book. JJ McKade has been visiting his grandmother for her birthday for several years since she moved to Florida. He is totally taken by surprise when she announces they are going on a “boat”. Then he learns when she says boat she means a cruise. He has a rough start being unprepared for whatever may come. His intentions are focused on giving his grandmother the best birthday she has ever had. Then he keeps running into Kinsley, who he cannot seem to forget, and Grandma has an admirer that seems to tag along everywhere. He could not imagine either of them losing their hearts on the trip, much less both of them. But there are roadblocks to a happy ending for both couples. I highly recommend you read their story.
I really enjoyed this book. I love everything about a cruise, so this story definitely renewed my desire to book another one.
The characters were a lot of fun, especially JJ and his grandmother. Their relationship had me wishing for just one more day with my own grandparents. The antics of the older crowd trying to find JJ a wife were entertaining and added so much charm to the story.
Kinsey was also a joy to read about and honestly inspired me to look up jobs on a cruise ship. And I absolutely loved her little green companion, Conrad.
The setting was beautifully described. I could easily picture every scene and felt completely transported. I’d really love to see Wynn get his own story someday
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
Talk about a fish out of water. When JJ arrives in Florida for his usual birthday celebration time with his Grandmother, little does he realize he will be kidnapped to a cruise ship with her and her 3 best friends. Now not only must he watch out for his mischievous grandmother and her friends, he must try to avoid their matchmaking shenanigans. Kinsley Kline has a plan. She has a definite end goal. Plus, the ship's crew is not allowed to fraternize with the passengers. No exceptions. Hunky cowboy JJ makes Kinsley wonder if breaking the rules might be better. Will their cruise boat love be enough for land? With Grandma and her friends help or hinder this watery love? I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.
This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.
There are a few love stories in this book. JJ so loves his grams that he lets her steal him away to a Caribbean cruise with absolutely no warning. He lovingly looks after her throughout the cruise and even afterwards. He works hard to make her birthday at sea extra special. Plus, they both find romance onboard! We see JJ and Kinsley's romance start and grow. Totally sweet, but they were fighting it because it's against the rules.
I loved seeing the cowboy still be a cowboy even out at sea. He's still honorable, protective, and dependable.
This was such a sweet romantic story. I couldn't help but like JJ who visited his grandmother for her 80th birthday and ended up on a cruise to the Caribbean.
The book was full of wonderful characters to add excitement to the story, although JJ could have done without some of that excitement. I enjoyed the beautiful places JJ and his grandmother got to visit and to learn about some of the history too.
The best part of this book was the romance that was blooming for several of the characters. It will make you wonder what happened after the cruise was over. I received an advance copy of this book, and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
Fun new series, Holiday Express series, by Shanna Hatfield. Nobody can says no to Grams. JJ makes his annual trip to Florida for his two weeks visit with Grams. This year she doesn’t have her usual honey-do list ready for him, she has planned an eleven day cruise to the Caribbean. Things get worse when her three besties show up on the ship as well and he figures out he’s the only none octogenarian of their group. Kinsley works for the cruise line and has never been tempted to break the “no fraternizing with guests” rule before. The more they see each other the more the attraction grows. *I received this as an ARC reader and am leaving my unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this story and from the very first page I was enthralled by the antics of JJ’s grandmother and her three cohorts. JJ arrives in Florida intending to spend some time with his grandmother and take care of anything that need fixing in her home. However, after only a few hours sleep she loudly wakes him up and forces him to go shopping for, much to his surprise, cruise attire. This is when he learns he is going cruising! Now the fun begins with his grandmother and her friends orchestrating everything to include romance. R. Fody Jan. 6, 2026
this is a well written story. he is a cowboy who is roped into going on a cruse with his grandmother. his grandmother and her group of friends meet another man and his grandson, this is a wonderful story about how they all get along and with details of the ports that they visit and the beautiful descriptions of the sunsets and sun rises on the ocean it feels like you are right there with them. if you like romance and some funny moments, one is with Conrad the frog, you will want to read the story
Every book written by this author is a sweet treat!
I wasn't really eager to read this book because I'm a country girl and cruises are not my thing, to say the least! Being trapped in a bid floating city looks like a nightmare to me😅!
But... as usual, the author did a very serious work and a lot of research to turn a romance into a real cruise and adventure without having to actually be on a ship!
I enjoyed every bit of it!
Spoiler alert: I cried, I laughed and couldn't put it down!
I recommend!
I was given an Arc copy of this book and this is my personal and honest opinion.
Just when you think the cowboy romance genre has been totally saturated, the author comes up with a zinger! Try and wrap your head around this: genuine cowboy rancher from central Oregon ends up on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. Rancher JJ McKade flies to Florida every year to visit with his very young at heart, grandmother, and take care of things around her house. But grandmother has her own ideas and strong arms him into accompanying her and her looney girlfriends on a Caribbean cruise! With boredom and restlessness setting in, he meets the head cruise horticulturalist, Kinsley Kline, and all of a sudden JJ‘s cruise gets a lot more interesting in a hurry. Being under contract with the cruise line means a very strict and serious no relationship with cruise customers whatsoever! So begins a clandestine and secret daily rendezvous with the two of them. Can a whirlwind romance at sea survive once they are back on solid ground? As usual, thwe author’s attention to details are impeccable. There are so many more incidents and high jinx going on that this reviewer must refrain from getting into spoiler territory. A must read for anyone who loves a good wholesome romance with lots of humor.
I wondered how this was going to work. Honestly, how was a grandma going to con her grandson to go on a cruise, but as I read it totally made sense. And he was such a good grandson. This was a very cute read, I was fascinated to learn a little more about the unwritten rules when cruising, and I loved learning about the places they visited. JJ and Kinsley were fun together and so was grandma with her new beau. Grandma's friends were a highlight for me, I could just imagine sitting there laughing along with them even though I'm nowhere near a grandma myself! Such a fun book.
What a very enticing and exciting tale of a reluctant cowboy. Yes, a cowboy on a cruise ship! If one had never taken a cruise, I must admit, this is a wonderful pictorial view of many well know islands to fill in that lack of cruising. The emotions, well kept under wraps, lends suspense to the rules of the cruise line, regarding their employees. It was a very warm building of pure love during the entire story.
