In a game of monsters. The Heart is the deadliest weapon.
Inside the compound, loyalty is engineered. Disobedience is fatal.
Alex has spent his life walking the fine line between weapon and man, trained to obey without question and kill without hesitation. Calm, precise, and controlled, he survives by suppressing the parts of himself that still feel. But when fractures start to appear inside the system that created him, Alex becomes something far more dangerous than a failed experiment. A Liability.
The Scientist watches from the shadows, tightening his grip as paranoia takes root. Someone is leaking information. Someone is undermining years of perfect design. And when control begins to slip, he does what he has always done best: he corrects the problem.
From within the compound, Thea sees the cost of those corrections firsthand. As the only human among engineered monsters, she tends the wounds they leave behind and the ones they cannot heal. When one of them falls, the truth doesn't die with him: it lingers, sharp and unbearable, demanding a choice she never thought she'd have to make. Some deaths are meant to silence. Some are meant to warn.
The Generic Lies was a fantastic addition to the The Secrets She Keeps, and they are best read as a tandem experience 😀 Genetic Lies provides the reader insight to the other characters' perspective which was amazing! With this companion book you get to relive the events from Alex's, Matt's, Thea's and even the Scientist's point of views. This made the entire reading experience much more in-depth and allowing the reader to understand some of the events clearer along with getting to know these characters deeper. Still some mysteries were left uncovered so that hopefully we'll find out these answers in the following book/s, keeping the suspense still alive and well...I definitely will be looking forward to reading the next book 😊
I really enjoyed this book. It was nice going back into the world. If you are going to read this book, I recommend reading it in tandem with The Secret She Keeps, as I felt like I was missing a core part of the story, even though I have read The Secret She Keeps.
I enjoyed the characters and all of the new information we learned. Some of my theories have been proven wrong, and some might turn out to be right—I can’t wait to see what happens next. Thanks to Sarah for the ARC copy and the special mention in the acknowledgments.
If you’ve read TSSK, get ready for THAT rollercoaster aaallll over again… but with so much more. We’re introduced to a couple of completely different characters in manner, attitude and goals… and it only raises the stakes higher. I HIGHLY recommend the tandem read, i promise it’ll leave you just as speechless! Thank you (&screw you 😉) S.J, I loved every bit of this 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
this novella hurt but also filled in gaps. Answered questions and gave more perspective into the full storyline. I loved seeing The Scientist POV, how he thinks, how he processes. I didn’t tandem read it BUT I would suggest definitely doing it if you’re reading it for the first time. Or just want to break your own heart
It was eye opening and gut wrenching to read this. More POVs and more insights that made me feel all the feels 🥲. Thanks for the ARC, gonna go soon in the corner now while I wait for the next book 😂
If you loved the Secret She Keeps, this will not disappoint! It was beautifully written and I loved seeing TSSK from different perspectives. It was very interesting to see how the different events unfolded through multiple eyes, making S. J. Allen's characters even more complex and added to the story's intrigue.
It will leave you with many questions, like why S. J. Allen did you have to rip my heart out all over again? Another cliff hanger? You're killing me! And how can I pre order the next one? I loved Matt and I loved seeing him through others eyes and it just confirmed to me that he is not all that he appears. Also again THAT ENDING!
