This one had me hooked almost immediately.
It blends suspense, emotion, and slow burn romance in a way that just works. The small town charm is still there, but there’s a darker edge this time that kept me on my toes.
Savannah and Gabe were everything. She’s stubborn and grieving, a little reckless at times, but it all felt real, and Gabe is that loyal, protective, quietly in love hero who never stood a chance when it comes to her. The slow burn between them was so satisfying, full of tension, history, and all the unspoken feelings that made every interaction hit harder.
The mystery kept me hooked and guessing, and I loved how it balanced the emotional side with the suspense. I did wish for a bit more clarity in a few spots, but it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story overall.
It’s emotional, tense, and really easy to get lost in.

I loved the first book, but this one completely took over my life. I could not put it down. Between the romance, the suspense, and the intense mystery plot, I was hooked from beginning to end.
And that plot twist?! Absolutely insane. I’m usually pretty good at catching clues, but Steffanie completely blindsided me. My jaw was on the floor because I never saw it coming, and I love when an author can still genuinely surprise me like that.
I already knew I was going to love Gabe after meeting him in book one, but getting his full story made me adore him even more. Gabe is an ex-military hacker helping his best friend track down a serial killer. Things get even more complicated when his best friend’s sister, Savannah, discovers a body. Gabe has spent years secretly in love with her and has always felt protective of her, but she’s completely off-limits. Savannah is carrying her own trauma and has no interest in relationships, which adds so much emotional depth to their story.
The character development was incredible, and the plot was unbelievably addictive. Honestly, this series would make the perfect TV show each book feels like a season finale that leaves you desperate for the next one. And yes, that cliffhanger has me running straight into book three.

First things first - that ENDING. It finished me. I felt a LITERAL CHILL to my bones because Blais wrote that phone call to perfection.
The romance - perfect. I LOVED Gabe Mercer's character. He's everything you want in a cross between a morally grey, highly connected protector and a dash of ooey-gooey cinnamon roll center.
It's not at all what I expected, and as I write this review while I compulsively drink water as a breastfeeding mom, let me tell you that I only have so much time in my day, and this is a series I will 100000% be jumping on as soon as the 3rd book comes out. It's hard to imagine me not loving any book in this series? There are so many twists and turns - and truly, I think about it constantly, even though I finished it last week.
Finding Steffanie Blais was a SOLID addition to my romantic suspense author docier - and I have admittedly high standards for that list. ('Will I, won't I order a trophy copy?' kinda questions. News flash - I definitely will be for these books!)
I feel like there was a section of the story that somewhat slowed down in the middle.. but trust me when I say you have to continue! It totally serves a purpose and ramps up the tension at the end!

A story full of suspense and tension, slow burn, unrequited love, a golden retriever hero and a stubborn heroine.
I gave this book 4.5 stars and here's my review and why.
Heroine, Savannah, is stubborn and sometimes reckless while grieving for her father's death, which we learn that he was involved in some shady situations.
Hero, Gabe, is an ex-military that loves Savannah since ages but hasn't acted on it while being on her side protecting from everything or everyone dangerous.
These stories are interconnected standalones and though I haven't read the first in the series I gathered some things like dear daddy being nothing as he appeared that resulted to his untimely death. I felt some confusion in some scenes because it wasn't so clear about the situation that led them into present. And though I finished the story I still feel that some questions of mine haven't been answered. I would have liked some more clarity considering I haven't read the first.
The story follows the couple and the aftermath of her father's death while there's a serial killer on the loop threatening everything and everyone in this small town but mostly this family. There are some revelations in the end and though I didn't have any suspicion it felt quite a surprise.
The story is quite emotional in several scenes so be prepared for some tissues on the side. My heart ached for both Savannah and Gabe though I would have liked to give a slap to Savannah to make see some sense as she behaved quite recklessly in times that she shouldn't.
And the tension between them! OMG! I was tethered in the edge for at least the half book. The slow burn made quite an impact.

I am so happy and grateful that I got the opportunity to read After The Ashes Fall which is the second book in the Secrets Of Wildhaven series. I read the first book, When The Smoke Clears, last month and I was excited to get back into this series and into the town of Wildhaven. This second book picked up where we left off in the first one so it is recommended you read this series in order to get the full picture of what’s happening!
This book follows Savannah and Gabe and we are brought into the book with Sav finding a body on her little hike. That alone captured my attention and I was immediately focused so I wouldn’t miss anything. Seeing Gabe drop everything to go to Sav only for her to tell them that they both didn’t need to show up just shows the type of relationship they have. The secret feelings that Gabe has for Sav is honestly so cute and you can immediately tell he likes her just from the way he acts from the very beginning.
This entire book is the perfect romantic suspense novel that has that perfect blend of feel good, found family moments with the looming suspense that adds a little flair to the story. The addition of the serial killer trope definitely turned what was once a pleasant small town into a living nightmare. Watching Sav, Gabe and Luke try to figure out who the person is that is on the loose in town had me trying to figure it out too! Overall, this was a great second edition to this series and I cannot wait to see what more will happen in Wildhaven.

I could not wait to get back to Wildhaven! Book two dives in right where the first left off—with Gabe and Savannah, and that ominous Ares still lurking. Being back in this town and this story felt so good and was exactly what I needed, but fair warning: this is definitely a series you’ll want to read in order to fully grasp everything unfolding.
This installment strikes such a great balance—those warm, found-family moments mixed with an undercurrent of suspense that keeps you on edge. And the addition of a serial killer element? It completely transforms Wildhaven from a charming small town into something much darker. Watching Sav, Gabe, and Luke try to piece together who’s behind it all had me playing detective right alongside them.
I’m officially hooked. There’s so much happening—multiple bodies turning up, mysterious clues left behind, and a shadowy presence that keeps you guessing. The tension, the danger, the constant “what’s going to happen next?”—it’s addictive.
At the heart of it all, though, is Savannah and Gabe. Their history is complicated and messy, but their chemistry? Absolutely electric. Gabe has that fierce, “protect her at all costs” energy—even when Savannah might not want or need it—and honestly, every woman deserves a Gabe.
There’s also a moment—a confession—that is both achingly beautiful and completely devastating. It hit hard and stuck with me long after.

Ahhhh the excitement to go back to Wildhaven was out of this world, and truthfully I am not disappointed. Book 2 follows Gabe and Savannah's story and it's exactly what I needed - spicy, full of suspense and that PLOT TWIST has me in a chokehold. Never in a million years would I have predicted it.🤯
Warning: you definitely want to read this series in order to fully comprehend the series of events that go on.
After the Ashes Fall picks up immediately where the first book left off, with Luke receiving a call regarding Savannah and the discovery of a dead body. When Luke and Gabe arrive at the scene, they learn that Savannah found a dead body while hiking and saw a strange man. This strange man continues to show up in throughout the small town of Wildhaven and Gabe becomes determined to ensure Savannah's safety at all costs. Together Luke, Gabe, Savannah navigate through the clues they find and try to solve the pieces of who is murdering all the people in their small town.
Savannah is a headstrong, stubborn woman who is still learning how to grief her fathers death all while trying to understand her feelings for Gabe, the man who's been nothing but honest with her. Gabe is an ex military hacker who's been in love with Savannah for years but has never acted on his feelings due to the fact that she is his best friends sister. Together, they make up a super steamy couple that has TENSION written all over them.🥵Honestly, they're my favorite couple so far in the series.

After the Ashes Fall is book 2 in the Secrets of Wildhaven series featuring Gabe & Savannah Wild.
This story picks up right where we left off in book 1 as the Wilds continue to deal with the death of their father and the mysterious disappearance of another man in town.
Savannah stumbles upon something while hiking and also is approached by a mystery man, who she wonders is involved in her discovery. She calls 911 to report and her brother Luke is dispatched, bringing with him his best friend Gabe.
Gabe is retired military and has been in love with Savannah for many years, even though she has never expressed interest back. He has been helping Luke with somethings around this investigation, and his methods are not always on the right side of the law.
As more mysterious deaths plague the small town, the crew must stick together to try and solve the case while also keeping one another safe. Savannah is stubborn and keeps going off on her own. Is she unknowingly putting herself in danger and will Gabe be able to keep her safe?
The series has me in an absolute chokehold, not only do we have a small town romance, but we also have a heavy dose of mystery and death. I finished this book in one sitting and I’m already looking forward to book 3 to see how this plays out.
Gabe and Savannah’s slow burn romance paid off in the most perfect way, and I can’t wait to see glimpses of them in the remaining books in this series.

Steffanie Blais makes the phrase “romantic suspense” make sense too good for our own good haha and I’m here for it!
This is the second book in the “Secrets of Wildheaven” series, the story continues just where the previous book left it, we found ourselves in a chaotic series of murders, a stalker and a mystery keeps getting messier and is screaming to be solved!
I really love how well balanced the story is written between the romance and suspense, even when I have been obsessed since book one with the main storyline of the mysterious murders, Gabe and Savannah’s story was as much as pulling. We can talk about the romance storyline or the mystery but this book hooked you up immediately.
Seeing as we already knew them, it was easy to connect with both Gabe and Savannah but here we have a different facet of them and I enjoyed it so much, they are, as a couple but also as an individuals, a very interesting and compelling duo.
Savannah is so strong, stubborn and determined it’s impossible not to admire her, and Gabe… I have an enormous respect for him, he’s not just so protective, loyal and an amazing man but he is so open and real about his feelings, he has to be one of the MMC with more emotional intelligence and you know what? That’s hot!
I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series, I swear it keeps surprising me with the twists at every corner!

Seeing as we already knew them, it was easy to connect with both Gabe and Savannah but here we have a different facet of them and I enjoyed it so much, they are, as a couple but also as an individuals, a very interesting and compelling duo.
Savannah is so strong, stubborn and determined it’s impossible not to admire her, and Gabe… I have an enormous respect for him, he’s not just so protective, loyal and an amazing man but he is so open and real about his feelings, he has to be one of the MMC with more emotional intelligence and you know what? That’s hot!
I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series, I swear it keeps surprising me with the twists at every corner!

Did I stay up until 3 am finishing this the day I received the ARC? Absolutely.
Did I regret it when my alarm went off at 6 am to go to work? Not even a little.
Steffanie gives me all the Catherine Cowles vibes where you just can't put the book down.
I COULD NOT WAIT to get back to Wildhaven! Book 2 picks right up where Book 1 ends with Gabe and Savannah and that dang Ares lurking around the corner. Gabe fights his attraction to Savannah so hard because he's got real feelings... and he's her brothers best friend. I love that their romance felt like a natural growth with the plot of the book and they didn't go from one spectrum to the other within a page.
But Savannah... girl. We need to talk about your lack of situational awareness. There's literally a serial killer with their sight set on your family and you're not listening to any warnings and just running off on your own putting yourself in some of the shadiest situations. Have you no self preservation?!

I’m hooked, this series is so captivating with so much happening.
Multiple bodies are being discovered, a mystery person appears plus items left at the scene of the crime being just a few things.
I love the mystery, danger and anticipation of what will happen next and not to forget how good all of the characters are.
This book however is mainly featured around Savannah and Gabe who have a complicated history, it’s messy at times but their chemistry is off the charts.
He will do everything possible to keep Savannah safe whether she wants him to or not.
A teddy bear with a major protect her vibe.
There is one moment in the story where a confession is so achingly beautiful but also devastating as well.
Wow! It certainly made me feel so many emotions. It was truly heartfelt.
An amazing story, steamy at times, with loveable characters old and new.
I love Steffanie’s writing style and her ability to keep me riveted to each story she writes, wanting more.

This is book 2 of the Wildhaven series. It picks right up where where When the Smoke Clears leaves off.
The Wild family is still in trouble with a hit man leaving them more cryptic messages. Savannah is trying to wrap her head around taking over the family business while Gabe, and of course our man Luke, try to shield and protect the family.
Gabe and Savannah have chemistry and tension. She is stubborn with just as many walls as Gabe has. So naturally they are perfect for one another!
I could NOT put this book down. I fell in love with Gabe's character in the first book and was thrilled to get his POV in this book. It did not disappoint. Savannah was a complex character working through many traumas while also exploring her feelings. Steffanie writes such relatable characters with gripping suspense that I just keep flipping pages because I get so immersed in the story.
I have so many ideas about all the mysteries happening. This series is keeping me thinking and plotting out ideas! I am so excited for book 3!

Savannah is a lawyer for the family business in Wildhaven. She has worked her way from the ground up doing as she is told and never given any priority treatment. She keeps to herself mostly and doesn’t like to depend on anyone. She is fiercely independent.
Gabe is Savannah’s brother’s best friend. He is ex-military and is now back in Wildhaven trying to help Luke out with his ongoing investigation. He has secretly been interested in Savannah since they were younger, but never acted on it and kept it to himself.
When Savannah becomes a target in a killer’s wake, Gabe will do anything to protect her and keep her safe, but will feelings get in the way?!
After the Ashes Fall was an amazing second book in this connected series. You will be questioning who the killer is the whole time. I cannot wait for book three in this amazing series and cannot wait to continue in this investigation!

The second book in the Secrets of Wildhaven series. If you have not read book one, When the Smoke Clears, go read it first. This series must be read in order and book two picks up where one left off.
This book starts off with Savannah making a gruesome discovery while on a hike. Setting up the premise for this storyline. Gabe and Luke rush to Savannah, only to be told she is fine. I am now hooked. Gabe and Savannah have crossed a line, but she is ignoring it, and he cannot forget it. The slow burn and tension between them is SO good.
This book had me on edge from the first chapter, more questions than answers. Is our stalker hiding in plain sight, who is the one behind the problems. As Gabe and Savannah work together, the twists and redirection are fantastic. As we get one answer, others form. Who do we trust?

The second book in the Secrets of Wildhaven series. If you have not read book one, When the Smoke Clears, go read it first. This series must be read in order and book two picks up where one left off.
This book starts off with Savannah making a gruesome discovery while on a hike. Setting up the premise for this storyline. Gabe and Luke rush to Savannah, only to be told she is fine. I am now hooked. Gabe and Savannah have crossed a line, but she is ignoring it, and he cannot forget it. The slow burn and tension between them is SO good.

Fast paced romantic suspense
For the fans of Catherine Cowles this book series is a absolute MUST! A peaceful small town until a mutilated body is found a quite town until a mastermind serial killer has their sights set on the Wild family.
Picking up right where the first book ends and follows a new pair of main characters. While hiking Savannah literally stumbles over a severed arm. After calling her brother Luke (the sheriff and main character of the first book) he and Gabe races to her. Gabe being likes best friend who has military and computer experience makes it his personal goal to always keep Savannah safe. Which leads to some forced proximity between Savannah and Gabe because no one is safe with the serial killer on the lose. More deaths and even more feelings come along that made it so I couldn't put this book down. A fast paced story that kept me on my toes. A series that should be read in order as the serial killer continues throughout the first two books and spoiler will continue on in the next (which I cannot wait to read!!)
With the tropes of brothers best friend, small town romance, serial killer/stalker, slow burn and romantic suspense.

I love that the plot continues throughout the entire series, so the mysteries drag on, we get some answers but more questions about the k!ller(s),...
So of course I'll keep this focused on the romance part of the book but you do need to read the series in order to understand everything going on.
Savannah and Gabe were so good together. Gabe is all in from the start, he wants something serious with Savannah. She's more hesitant to say the least. This gives us great moments of tension, angst and pining. Their chemistry is so good, I love them together!
I am SO excited for book 3!!

The opening scenes?! Well, those just grab you right in. After The Ashes Fall is the second book in The Secrets of Wildhaven Series and features Savannah and Gabe. Do I need to go back and read When the Smoke Clears? Yes, yes I do.
The MMC and FMC have a history that is complicated and messy, but their chemistry? Absolutely perfect. Gabe is the epitome of “protect her at all costs” energy—which who doesn't want that in their life? Savannah - she’s this sassy outgoing personality, but so much more is going on with her.
The suspense is absolutely where it needs to be - just enough to keep reading, but while feeding some of the answers you need. There’s also a moment—a confession— that hit hard and stuck with me. This was: emotional, suspenseful, a little steamy, and filled with characters you can’t help but love. I cannot wait to see what’s next for Wildhaven, but also I need to go back and see what I missed (I recommend reading in order!)

This is the perfect addition to this incredible series. I didn't expect things to go the way they did in this but I'm so glad that they did because things really take off. There is even more happening in this book. I thought I had an idea of how something was going to happen or what might come next but then something else comes along changing the course of my thoughts. Now I'm like really wondering who is this person that's causing all the issues that have been happening and occurring. You get a name but yet you're also left with unanswered questions. And then the ending that surprised me. I didn't think it was going to end that way but it did and I am excited to find out what's coming next. Thanks so much to the author and House of Hearts for a copy of this. All opinions are my own and freely expressed.

Note you will want to read this series in orders there is information you need from book one and it picks up right where book one ends. There is a lot going on and you need all the pieces to put it together.
Ioved Gabe and savannahs story. These two are such a fun pair and their tropes couldn’t be any better. He falls first and hard and she is his best friends little sister hehe. They both got troubles hidden deep and all Gabe wants to show sav is how amazing she is and she doesn’t have to be a lone wolf all the time.
Stephanie is definitely keeping us on our toes and the uncovered truth in this series has me pulling private I hours trying to weave all the information together.

I have been looking forward to this book as soon as I finished When the Smoke Clears. The storyline is so compelling and well written! I was flying through this book.
This story picks up immediately following book one, so I really recommend reading that one first (plus it's amazing). Savannah doesn't expect to find b0dy parts when out for a walk, but the town of Wildhaven can't hide its secrets forever.
Gabe is the hero all of us dream of. He is fully committed to Sav, even though she has no idea he feels that way, and will do anything to protect her from the d@ng3rs that are lurking in town.
Will we find out who the mysterious Ares is? Will you have more questions? (Spoiler on the latter: probably)
I can't wait to get my hands on book 3!!!

Savannah is out for a run when she stumbles over a dead body. Her family’s secrets and mysteries put a target on her back. What happens next?
I liked it. It is part 2 of a series that continues in the next book that will release in May. The series centers around a small town and a family that is dealing with some suspense related to their father. I enjoyed the family banter. It is not the shorter side, but I felt like this one dragged a little bit.
The spice was fine. Only a couple scenes that are more romantic than spicy. I actually liked their relationship storyline more than the mystery to be honest. It was interesting how vulnerable they both let themselves be together and how they did not want to accept the easy way out.
Overall, it was a good romance with family drama/suspense mixed in.
