I was so excited when I learned this story would be set in Tofino—my most favourite place on Earth—and Carley Fortune captured it perfectly. The lush rainforest, the misty beaches, the moody weather that seeps into your bones, even the Toki Doki food truck (which has since closed, and I will never be over it 😭). The setting isn’t just a backdrop; it feels alive, echoing the grief, longing, and emotional uncertainty Frankie is moving through. Tofino becomes a place of reckoning, healing, and quiet transformation.
What I wasn’t expecting was how deeply I would fall in love with George and Frankie. Their connection feels intimate in the way only long-standing friendships can—built on shared memories, inside jokes, and a deep understanding that doesn’t need constant explanation. The chemistry between them is undeniable, rooted in familiarity rather than fantasy. The yearning, the restraint, the history between them had me completely undone. I might even love them more than Percy and Sam, which is something I truly never thought I would say.
I also really appreciated how honest this book is about the messiness of real life. It explores how complicated it can be to become a young mother, to have your career dreams altered or cut short, and to grieve the version of your life you once imagined. It acknowledges how disorienting it can be to reach your 30s without clear answers, and how waiting for the “perfect timing” often means waiting forever. These themes felt deeply human and handled with so much care and compassion.
Despite the emotional depth, this book was incredibly easy and enchanting to read. Carley Fortune’s writing is tender, immersive, and quietly devastating in the best way. I devoured this in a single afternoon, unable to put it down, and found myself thinking about Frankie and George long after I turned the final page.

Pour yourself a glass of Gewürztraminer, grab your credit card, and have your passport and travel planner ready because you will be planning a trip to Tofino when you are done reading this beautiful book.
This is my new favourite. The writing is rich, the descriptions are perfectly painted, and the story is emotionally resonant. I can’t get enough of Frankie and George. If you are a fan of Little Women and have always cheered for Laurie, this book is for you.
Frankie and George have been best friends since they were eight years old. These are two people who really know each other. When you see them in a room, you can only assume that they are a couple, but that’s not the case. Toward the end of their twenties, life has kind of gotten in the way of their friendship. Frankie is about to be wed, but her fiancé leaves her completely shattered with nothing but a note saying he can’t marry her. How can she recover from the pain of this breakup? By attending the honeymoon in Tofino, with George, and reconnecting/repairing their friendship after being apart for too long.
We live in a society that makes you feel like you need to have your life figured out by the time you reach your thirties. One of my key takeaways from this story is that it’s okay if you don’t have it figured out. In fact, it’s okay to start all over, try something completely new, and suck at it.
The pacing of this book is very balanced. We have our fast moments of adventure, our slower moments that allow for reflection, and chapters that are so purposeful you can’t help but feel completely satisfied. Usually, when I finish a book I love, I say, “My only critique is that I need more,” but with this, I don’t need to. The story is complete. It is perfect as it is.

- Aurora, the bestie who loves love. Girl, I see you. I, too, want to analyze every interaction and conversation my friends have when they’re dating.

Carley Fortune really knows how to write romance that just sweeps you away. This one had all the emotions, the chemistry, and the kind of characters you can’t help but root for. The writing felt effortless and pulled me right into the story, and there were so many moments that made me grin like crazy.
It’s one of those books that makes you feel everything all at once—sweet, funny, heartfelt, and a little bit swoony in the best way. Totally the kind of story you want to curl up with and get lost in.

Carley Fortune has been hit or miss for me in the past but boy did she knock it out of the park with this one.
One thing Fortune excels at is how detailed and real her settings feel. And sure they are based on real experiences but it still takes a lot of skill to make a reader feel like they’re there like she does. Her characters are also three dimensional, especially with Frankie and George.
I loved everything about this story and it reminded me why I am such a fan of the romance genre. It will make you feel allllll of the emotions and I can’t recommend this enough!

This is a book that would work really well as a movie, I could picture it playing out in my head vividly while reading. I loved the tension and complexity in the relationship between the characters. For someone who doesn’t read romance too often I had a good time reading this!

I was waiting for the perfect moment to read this when I didn’t have to pause to put it down because I just KNEW I would need to binge it in one sitting. And I was absolutely correct. From the first page, I was enthralled and wanted to keep reading. Fortune’s writing is enchanting. You feel like you are there with the characters and any place she writes about I want to visit. Now I want to visit Tofino because it sounds absolutely breathtaking!!!!
The plot of this book was so unique in having childhood best friends but it not being second chance and I was so intrigued how it was going to play out. These two were just meant to be together but above all they are best friends and that’s what’s so beautiful 😭 even though Fortune’s books are only in the fmc’s pov, I can feel what the mmc is feeling and that’s a talent to have!!!! The way they saw each other, the way they understood each other, it is so beautiful!!!! I loved the family dynamics and the pacing was absolutely perfect.
I just love Carley Fortune’s books and I’m already itching for what she comes out with next.

I say this every single time I pick up one of Carley’s books but her writing style, characters and story telling abilities are so incredibly unique. The research that happens to create these dreamy escapes, while portraying and shedding light on our beautiful Canadian culture does not go unnoticed. Carley always makes me want to immediately go book a vacation after I finish a book.
As for George and Frankie’s story, I loved it. The back and forth between their current lives to their childhoods really added an extra dimension to their relationship as friends to lovers. Every single character knew they were always meant for each other. I really enjoyed seeing how Frankie took the time to find herself again but also found herself back to George.
Our Perfect Storm was one of my most anticipated reads for 2026 and it did not disappoint. Thank you thank you thank you to Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for an e-arc!

i screamed when i got the email and started it right away, i love carley fortune so much and this book was proof of why. her ability to write friendships has always been my favorite and i love her location descriptions. normally those can get boring and drag on but she always writes them so beautifully i wanna book a flight to visit that place!!! this one also has my favorite trope ever (friends to lovers you will always be famous) and i really enjoyed the flashbacks and letters. it was done so well and i was sad when i realized it was over. although nothing will probably ever top this summer will be different, this comes in a close second!

The development of Frankie’s relationship with her mom had me so teary. I don’t think I’ve ever cried about whales before but it was so beautiful!!!
This felt very fresh compared to Fortune’s other books, yet still had the familiar summery nostalgia that I know & love.

4.25 stars. On the whole, this was really sweet! Definitely one of the best romances I’ve picked up in the last couple of years.

I will always pick up any Carley Fortune book because I love the Canadian settings! She does an amazing job at describing the places, which makes me want to visit them. I still really want to go to the east coast after reading a previous book by her! After reading this book and now that I live in BC I’m determined to go to tofino this summer!!!!
Okay first I feel like some of the characters were really flushed out, while some I forget.. like the two brothers are one character for me. I know the one had a baby, but personality wise, physical characteristics, idk who they are. I did like some of the dynamics between the characters, such as Frankie and her mom's complex relationship. I feel like I really understood her as a character and was rooting for a better relationship between them. However, I feel like George and his dad's relationship could have been flushed out more.
I thought it was interesting to read a childhood-friends to lovers without it being a second chance romance. However, my main critique is that I felt the novel did a bit more telling rather than showing. Frankie was often reflecting back on her friendship with George or her ex-fiancé relationship or her relationship with her mom, which I found a bit slow and boring at times. I found it picked up towards the end and brought my attention back though! Honestly, I think if this had been dual POV with George it would have been great! At the end, getting George’s perspective (without giving away spoilers) gave me an aspect that I felt lacking throughout the story and was just necessary. Frankie and George have been friends since they were eight-years-old. They’ve experience almost every milestone together, until Frankie’s wedding where she’s left at the alter and George is left to help pick of the pieces during her honeymoon in Tofino.
Like all of Fortune’s novels, Our Perfect Storm takes place in Canada. More specifically, Tofino, British Columbia. Fortune paints a vivid picture of the lush forests and beautiful beaches as Frankie and George re-connect after a tumultuous past few years in their friendship. Without going into spoilers, I absolutely loved Fortune’s inclusion of events in Canada’s very recent past that had a profound impact on the country.
Frankie and George’s friendship is one that both characters value above all else. They’re each other’s whole worlds, so they protect the friendship like their lives depend on it. So, it’s not surprising that Frankie and George can be annoying. Frankie refuses to even acknowledge her feelings for George, while George insists on waiting for/curating the perfect moment to express his own.
This miscommunication creates the most delicious angst and tension as Frankie and George slowly collide during their week in Tofino.

Overall, Our Perfect Storm is a heartfelt exploration of love, friendship, and second chances set against the stunning backdrop of Tofino. Fortune delivers an emotionally charged story that will leave readers rooting for Frankie and George long after the final page.

Frankie and George have been friends since they were eight-years-old. They’ve experience almost every milestone together, until Frankie’s wedding where she’s left at the alter and George is left to help pick of the pieces during her honeymoon in Tofino.
Like all of Fortune’s novels, Our Perfect Storm takes place in Canada. More specifically, Tofino, British Columbia. Fortune paints a vivid picture of the lush forests and beautiful beaches as Frankie and George re-connect after a tumultuous past few years in their friendship. Without going into spoilers, I absolutely loved Fortune’s inclusion of events in Canada’s very recent past that had a profound impact on the country.
Frankie and George’s friendship is one that both characters value above all else. They’re each other’s whole worlds, so they protect the friendship like their lives depend on it. So, it’s not surprising that Frankie and George can be annoying. Frankie refuses to even acknowledge her feelings for George, while George insists on waiting for/curating the perfect moment to express his own.
This miscommunication creates the most delicious angst and tension as Frankie and George slowly collide during their week in Tofino.

Overall, Our Perfect Storm is a heartfelt exploration of love, friendship, and second chances set against the stunning backdrop of Tofino. Fortune delivers an emotionally charged story that will leave readers rooting for Frankie and George long after the final page.
