No ha dejado una fuente, ya sea oral o escrita, sin remover para poder ofrecer al lector una visión lo más amplia y objetiva posible de José María Escrivá de Balaguer y despejar algunas dudas sobre su verdadera influencia en el Vaticano, su actitud ante los judíos, la fuerza que tiene la institución que él fundó o, simplemente, cómo era en la intimidad. Con su estilo directo y sencillo, hace de este retrato de un personaje siempre polémico, siempre rodeado de cierto misterio, una lectura que más se parece a la de una novela, donde va respondiendo con ritmo y detalle a muchas de las preguntas que todos nos hemos hecho alguna vez sobre el fundador del Opus Dei.

Libro sobre la vida de San Josemaría Escrivá, que busca transmitir un retrato de su alma: su modo de ser, de querer a Dios y a los demás, de pensar... Los hechos históricos y las numerosas anécdotas que describe, sirven sólo de ocasión a ese propósito, pero no constituyen el objeto principal del libro (por ejemplo, no sigue un orden cronológico). Estilo vivo, en sintonía con la figura del Fundador. De interés para conocer a San Josemaría Escrivá, y para parecerse a él en el tono humano y sobrenatural: en el modo de practicar las virtudes cristianas.

Me encantó que durante los meses que me tarde en leer este libro me sentí especialmente cerca de San Josemaría recordando anécdotas y virtudes de su vida tan ordinarias pero con gran trascendencia.

Sin duda un libro que me recordó la esencia de lo que estamos llamados a vivir como miembros del Opus Dei y que no solo ¡Vale la pena!, ¡Vale la vida!

I really love these eyewitness views of life with a saint. I would point out the subtitle, as it indicates that this isn't the book to start with if you are interested in this saint or his apostolate. It starts in the middle and not the beginning. That being said, I think these kinds of accounts give such a vivid encounter with the personality and spirit of the person being profiled, and I always get a lot out of them.

Great collection of vignettes from St. Josemaria's years in Rome that provide a richly textured and personal look at his life and the genesis of Opus Dei in the eternal city. A book comprised almost entirely of 'little moments' could so easily become a mess, but this volume was tremendously well edited into a cohesive narrative while still hopping back and forth from year to year throughout. A substantial amount of the stories were taken from dozens of oral accounts and personal notes, providing a beautifully intimate portrait of the 'mangy donkey's' later life and boundless spiritual zeal. While not entirely necessary, a familiarity with St. Josemaria's writings, such as 'The Way' and 'Christ is Passing By' will enhance this reading experience.

I started off not liking the book but then I realized I was reading it with preset expectations. once I let thoe go, I started to enjoy the book for what it was, an insight into this saint's day to day life and his interactions with his children in Opus Dei. I was sad when the book ended.
