Victor Davis Hanson was educated at the University of California, Santa Cruz (BA, Classics, 1975), the American School of Classical Studies (1978-79) and received his Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University in 1980. He lives and works with his family on their forty-acre tree and vine farm near Selma, California, where he was born in 1953.

The above quote might seem odd for a book that provides exhaustive analysis on a political movement and its leader but it was running thru my mind constantly, while reading Victor D. Hanson’s new book, THE COUNTERREVOLUTION.

My best liked aspect of this tome is to find it was nonpartisan. Dr. Hanson holds no punches. As he recounts the events covered, (Trump’s loss in 2020, the years between the 2nd and 3rd campaigns, his second successful run in 2024 and the first year of his 2nd presidency), both parties are illuminated; successes and failures.

Second most appreciated aspect - nowhere in the expansive text are readers told what to think. Hanson provides the details and readers are able to ponder themselves. Verifications are easy in the Kindle edition. They are highlighted throughout the pages and interactively accessed in the massive Notes section. It represents 25% of the total page count.

The above quote is a succinct summary for the book that’s extremely well written. Hanson is a seasoned wordsmith. Easy to read but time consuming due to the sheer volume of information, COUNTERREVOLUTION is a thorough guide for both sides, (three sides?), of our rapidly evolving political landscape📚

The Definitive Record of the Trump Era

I want to begin by thanking President Donald Trump for recommending "The Counterrevolution." His recommendation brought this extraordinary book to my attention, and after finishing it, I understand exactly why he considered it so important. I also want to express my appreciation to Victor Davis Hanson for the enormous amount of research, organization, and thought that clearly went into producing what I believe will become one of the essential books for understanding the Trump era.
What separates "The Counterrevolution" from so many political books is its scope.

Hanson does not simply offer opinions about Donald Trump or the MAGA movement. He reconstructs a remarkable period of American history, showing how a president who left office politically isolated, removed from major social media platforms, attacked relentlessly in the press, confronted by an extraordinary series of investigations and legal proceedings, and dismissed by much of the political establishment nevertheless returned to win the presidency again.

I read nonfiction primarily because I want to learn and understand, and what impressed me most was the extraordinary amount of detail Hanson provides.
Dates matter. Actual quotations matter. Chronology matters. Context matters. Again, events that many of us remember individually are placed next to one another so the reader can see the larger pattern and understand how one development led to another. I found myself constantly stopping to take notes.

Hanson examines deplatforming, political and legal warfare, the Mar-a-Lago investigation, the prosecutions and civil cases involving Trump, efforts to remove him from ballots, hostility from much of the media and academia, and the increasingly polarized political culture surrounding him. Rather than treating these as disconnected episodes, he shows how they became part of the story of Trump's political comeback. One of the fascinating themes of the book is the degree to which efforts intended to destroy Trump's political future sometimes produced precisely the opposite result.
The book then carries the reader through the transformation of the 2024 campaign: Joe Biden's declining political position, the presidential debate, Biden's withdrawal, Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic nominee, the assassination attempts against Trump, Trump's selection of JD Vance, and the growing support of figures such as Elon Musk, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Joe Rogan, and others who came to believe that the stakes of the election required them to become involved.

Hanson does not stop with the election. He connects Trump's return to the policies of his second administration and to the larger counterrevolution described in the title. Immigration and the border, energy production, DEI, universities, military readiness, government spending, technology, artificial intelligence, health and food policy, foreign affairs, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and America's role in the world all become parts of a much larger argument about two fundamentally different visions for the country.

That is another reason this book works so well, comparison. Hanson repeatedly contrasts competing political philosophies, governing styles, and approaches to American institutions. Whether discussing foreign policy, energy, the military, cultural issues, the media, or the administrative state, he gives the reader enough historical sequence and context to understand why the differences matter.

People will inevitably approach a book about Donald Trump with strong opinions. Some readers will agree enthusiastically with Hanson's conclusions, while others will challenge them. But anyone seriously interested in understanding Trump's fall, extraordinary political survival, return to power, and the movement surrounding him should read this book. Its greatest value is that Hanson has assembled so much history, commentary, chronology, quotations, and political context into one coherent narrative.That is why I believe "The Counterrevolution" will have value far beyond today's political arguments. Years from now, researchers, historians, writers, students, and ordinary Americans trying to understand what happened during this remarkable period will be able to return to this book as a reference.

I have read many political and historical books, but very few have left me feeling that I had just finished something that could become part of the permanent historical record of an era.
